Yet tonight, she had received a call from one particularly mouthy lieutenant she had recently encountered. He wanted to give her his energy quota. For him, she was sure it was perfectly normal, but for her? Not many lieutenants knew her well enough to choose her as their dedicated superior. It was a shame they didn't, a free energy meal was exactly what she wanted most nights.
Alkaid had given him his directions. Now that energy was coming to her, there was no reason to break her concentration from one of the two tasks she did perform on a daily basis. She'd taken a place in a little used room where she had tacked up a poster-sized piece of paper. Simplified drawings were scribbled over the surface in pencil, detailing the areas of the rift she had been exploring recently. Major landmarks, of which there were few, were the only markers she had to navigate by.
The ascendant paced back and forth slowly through the room, tapping the eraser end of the pencil she'd been using against her cracked palm. No matter how many times she looked at it, the rift made no sense to her as far as boundaries or direction went. There were things, and then there weren't.
Defeated for the moment, she sat gracefully in a chair and let her gaze level on the wall in silence.
