Mild annoyance painted the older Life trainee's face as he marched himself to the training fields, coat left at the cabin and Regal already summoned in his right hand. Twitter was always an annoyance, he wasn't sure why he punished himself by looking at it.

It did reveal, however, that one Jack Hawthorn was a massive p***k. He thought he was on good terms with the other man, or at least alright terms. It seemed, however, that things might change. Fileting into the c***k of Lex's armor that was his insecurity about he and Ami's relationship - turning down the proposal was still a healing wound - was a bad move for Mr. Hawthorn.

He waited.

Jack, who honestly thought messing around was all in good fun as far as Twitter went, left the infirmary in a somewhat good mood. It didn't quite sour when he realized Lex meant training fields when he said "fresh air", but it did amuse him that his words had hit a nerve.

Lex's annoyance was detected as he approached, but he imagined that was the byproduct of reading s**t on Twitter in the first place; it was why he only checked in occasionally and bothered to message even less. "Yo," Jack greeted him. "If you wanted a spar, you could just say so, man."

He was still on the mend from Peyton's brawl, but his face wasn't as bruised as before: just a few splotches of green were left at his jaw that was visible.

Lex gave a passive grunt and shrug, noting Jack's bruised face. Apparently he'd been fighting quite often - he'd only seen the man working in the infirmary, however, and not on any cots. He was probably too stubborn to even seek medical treatment. Heh, something they had in common.

"I could, but then that'd draw the peanut gallery here - or at least rile them up even more. Not sure why I pay attention to those gnats." Lex shook his head, sighing like an old willow. The wrinkles around his eyes and mouth were somewhat more visible than usual.

Without much else, Lex shot at Jack's feet in hopes to keep range.

"Maybe you actually care what people say on there," Jack theorized with a dry smile. "What better place to study human psychology than the immortal posts of 140 characters or less, hmm?"

Summoning his sword, he pushed past the bullet spray rather than backed off; instinct these days was to attack more than defend, and what were a few stings after all that? He was determined to put in a lot more fight than he had last time, and with a weapon it was easier to--especially if Lex had any inkling that beating him up was an appropriate response to a few messages.

"Or maybe you just like the excuse to argue?" he asked as he swung.

Lex really hated close range weapons, especially ones that were nearly as tall as he was. Jack's sword took a harsh bite out of his shield, the trainee grunting and backing off, eyes narrowed at the fellow Life. " You make a fair point - on both accounts. I enjoy the argument, it keeps me sharp." That, and it reminded him that he wasn't nearly as stupid as he often felt when standing next to Ami, or even Jack.

Perhaps that was the issue. Ami and Jack were intellectual equals, while Lex was behind. He was smart, witty, charming - but not brainy. That's what ground his gears; the two of them would be perfect for each other - or somewhat. "Maybe I like to be reminded of why we need more solid Hunters."

Lex growled, firing off the gun with a sneer. He was far too riled up, he knew, but it felt good to be angry. He hadn't allowed himself to show public anger in quite some time.

Sharp, huh? In that case, they had more in common than initially thought. Jack's smile grew toothy in silent agreement as he raised his blade to take off some of the edge of the bullets. The sharp sounds roused him to quick action; he was reminded a little of Nunez's shotgun firing wildly into the horseman ambush.

"Define 'solid' for me." He made a few short swings rather than one large one this time; they both should keep on their toes. "There's no such thing as a sane hunter in my opinion, Jamil. Your work is cut out for you. All of us have that one something that can bring it all down."

"Certainly there are no sane Hunters - I'm insane for even trying to surmount this island's mental problems." Lex admitted, not doing anything to block the swings of the giant's giant sword other than shooting back and walking backwards. "Perhaps it's not about curing them - but screening them. Checking if they're mentally stable enough to even go on missions or if they just need to stay on island - or vice versa. Send the ones that are too unstable off island, don't let them interfere with the goings-on and the managment."

Lex cleared his throat, an almost apology for rambling. "What I mean by solid is simply not so broken that they'd break down and take the system with them at the drop of a hat. None so violent that they turn on their comrades, none so frail and afraid that they have a panic attack in the middle of a fight or a training regimen. A healthy middle ground with some allotted room for the instability."

He certainly couldn't argue that: wanting to deal with people's individual headcases was insane all right.

"Good luck," Jack said with a shrug, a muscle in his face twitching as he endured the spray of bullets with a grunt, returning fire so to speak. "I've started to learn that people are not so easy to categorize. But by that logic, new recruits would need to be more strictly trained, our recruiting process itself more selective. You'd have to cut out quite a few people already here."

"And isn't that a thought." Lex grinned, hopping back and out of Jack's reach temporarily, thumb flicking down on a button where a modern gun's safety switch would be. Regal's wings glowed a bright gold, the aura swirling like a whirlwind around the hunter before dissipating into the ground as a golden feather. "Just think of it, Hawthorn. A group of people that had a chance of defending humanity and not destroying themselves from within." He pulled at the collar of his shirt. "And all our problems? Cannon fodder."

"And what, you would be at the head of the culling?"

Jack braced himself as the whirlwind started--that was how Finn's charge also started--but it seemed to be a passive effect as nothing came to harm him. The impulse was there to recharge himself, but he could keep going. Owain's shield was still strong.

Nevertheless, his hard swings from before minimized to more controlled cuts. "Who would pass your tests?" he asked, brows raised. "Not Caelius I imagine, but he gets his job done at the end of the day and that's what this organization cares about. Standardization isn't as easy as you make it sound, Jamil. There will always be variables. Take people out of the equation, and you won't have a more united force: you'll just have a smaller, angrier one against a host of enemies that just won't die. I don't disagree with your vision, but I also know it's just a pipe dream."

Lex shot Jack a very perturbed look, standing his ground at this point. It was obvious he'd never gain the high ground or any distance from the giant and his sword. Now it was just a matter of dueling wits and crack shots whenever the opportunity rose. Blocking with a pistol was rather hard.

"And if Caelius continues to get the job done at the end of the day, we'll have a smaller and angrier group of people fighting an undying enemy." Lex retorted, frown set in to his face. Jack's words belied a truth, unfortunately. "Then what compromise would you propose, Hawthorn. What would the point of being a psychologist on this island even be? Categorize all the people's problems, let the higher ups know what these people can and can't be allowed near or what to do?"

Standing still or on the move, Owain really was hungry for Lex's shield that day. Jack scoffed as he jabbed, pushing himself above the sting of the bullets once more.

"What makes you say that? He hasn't been going around slaughtering hunters left and right like you seem intent on with that plan," he pointed out. Just the ones who end up catching his interest one way or another: like Finn's ******** stupid move in the post-trials meeting, and he was lucky to get away with just a dissolved eye.

Not for the first time, he had to mentally skip over Chel's fate.

"Jamil, I'll give it to you straight: it sounds like a whole lot of Your Problem and not at all Mine. But as far as my opinion goes, you can't go wrong with that idea." Jack shrugged. He already did files on select people without the pursuit of that specialization; he didn't imagine it would be any more fun having to interview them constantly just to make sure they wouldn't suddenly go nuts. "Beyond your interviews, I'd suggest perusing the mission reports as well. Some of the ones people bother doing might clue you in on the ones who might become future behavioral problems."

"I'm sure if the other leads weren't around to slap his hand, he'd kill anyone that looked at him wrong." Lex retorted, shoving Jack away from him to gain leverage. This fight, and this debate, was becoming tiresome from the truths Jack continued to pile onto him.

Lex aimed a shot at Jack's chest, then another and another. "None of your business? Funny, you're the one always bringing my prospective field up. You seem quite interested, Jack." Lex sneered, bracing himself for the giant's next barrage of short swings. "Though your suggestions do sing true."

Something seemed to switch on in the other Lifer. Jack raised his weapon to try and block the shots, but even then the collective force was enough to knock the wind out of him. Taken off guard by the suddenly fierce assault, he stumbled back with a grimace, gazing at Lex past his blade with narrow eyes.

"The ********, Jamil. Do you have a problem with me too?" he prompted, irritation slipping past his usual cool tone. "You're the one throwing s**t out there on Twitter about hunter psyche and talking to me about it. If you can't take some criticism, you need to grow up."

Irritation turned to indignation. He'd taken a lot of s**t from people recently; having Lex get snippy with him was making the scales tip a little too much. Maybe it was that anger that made it too difficult for him to release the charge correctly--or, and Jack chose to believe this reason since the giant wasn't offering a rebuttal, maybe Owain really did want him to keep hitting the lows until he gave in and broke down. ********: 16

"A problem? No, Jack, I have no problem with you. In fact, you've opened my eyes to new possibilities, and caught me in my faults. Now allow me to sharpen you." Lex replied, a queer smile alighting his face. He truly did appreciate Jack, despite the man's foul temper and continual jabs regarding Ami. "Consider this my thanks."

Lex began to shoot a barrage at Jack by running his hand over the hammer continuously, advancing on the other Lifer. "Your bruising hasn't gone unnoticed, I'll let you know. Neither has your generally more than usual unpleasantness, and you've been looking haggard for a while. Words fly around this small of an establishment." Lex chided, grey eyes narrowed, cogs spinning quickly in his head. "It seems to me you're using others to inflict a type of self harm. However, you don't have depression, anxiety, military history, a history of abuse. You're an enigma, Hawthorn." Lex prattled rather distantly, eye to eye with the man. "Should I alert Sunny that we have a case of NSSI? Keep you from the sparring grounds?"
