1)In regards to new users signing up to the site, has there been any improvement on a capcha system? It seems we're getting bombarded with spam accounts again.

1. Not yet but we did add this to the Engineering task list. We wanted to make it easier to create accounts but it is currently a little too easy X_X

Do you have any plans on implementing any security here on Gaia such as SSL Encryption (for login, marketplace transactions, and trading)?

I'd sleep better knowing my account was much safer if encryption were implemented. I am aware of the Google Auth and IP verification, but having SSL when I input my password anywhere (mp, trade, login) would be MUCH more secure if it wasn't going over in plain text. Having SSL would mean I could log into Gaia on an unencrypted/insecure network, such as a public wi-fi without worrying about the password being sniffed/keylogged.

No plans currently for SSL across the site but something we can look at.

What do you plan on doing about the users who exploited glitches in the Halloween Event to hit top of Leader board, and their effect on the Soul Candy Score?

We will do a sweep of the leaderboard and ensure we catch anyone we believe are cheating and they will not be rewarded a prize.

November 10th, 2014:

Note for context: during the week between the last session and this one, it was announced that zOMG! would be closed down forever due to a major security hole in its code, which - due to obsolete code - would take far more time and effort to fix than the site was prepared to budget for.

Princess Angelishia
gataka
Games

What brought your attention to zOMG! in the first place?

I mean in the chronology given you've only found the critical flaw after taking it down which does not explain why you had to take it down to begin with. It goes like this:

1- Somehow heard about or found bad-enough problems in zOMG!
2- Took the game down to look into those
3- Found something worse
4- Tragedy ensued

I can't puzzle step 1...so, I repeat, what was the initial event that got this ball rolling?

Our OPs guys went sleuthing for potential security risks around our site and found the one in zOMG.

Princess Angelishia
PlumaDeTerror
Conspiracies

apparently there was a handful of user that manage to hack into gaia through zomg and steal a lot of peoples information, such as accounts pw, and their credit card numbers
so should we be making new accounts and canceling our bank accounts???

No, this is false! No account information was stolen through zOMG. Also, we do not store your credit card information.

Misc.

First of all, yes, I am sad to see zOMG! go, but I understand that it had to be done. Now here's a controversial question. Why wasn't it taken down sooner?

On June 16th, we were told, "In a few weeks time we'll be shutting the game down in order to repair a critical issue that could potentially affect many Gaians playing the game."

It wasn't until September 30th that the game was taken down, three and a half months later.

On November 6th, it was revealed, "Particularly we were addressing some critical vulnerabilities in the server infrastructure", implying that Gaia was aware of what the issue was when the first announcement was made.

November 7th, we were given more clarification that "...during an investigation into issues with zOMG!, it was discovered that zOMG! had a serious flaw in the code. Basically, there was a security exploit in the game that, had it been abused (and thankfully it wasn't!), would have allowed people not only access to zOMG!, but to our site's servers and ultimately, to all your accounts."

On to the question: On June 16th, was Gaia really aware (as announcements seem to imply) that zOMG! had a hole allowing people to potentially access the website's servers and all of our accounts? Did Gaia really leave the game up for three and a half months while being aware of this massive security issue? If so, why? What caused the delay in shutting the game down if Gaia was aware of this?

This is pretty important and I am sure it deserves an answer.

In the summer we were aware that there was a potential problem, but at the time we were unaware how large. We didn't know at the time that leaving it up was such a huge risk, so we left it up while doing what little maintenance we could while it was still live. It wasn't until we took zOMG down and began to dive deeper into the issue that we uncovered that this small problem was a symptom of a much larger security risk. When we came to the conclusion that there just wasn't a feasible way to fix the issue, we made the difficult decision to stop maintenance on zOMG and announce that we were unable to bring it back.

A few days ago, there was a mistake and Count Halphas' Passion was sold in Mecha Neko for 29k. Some users totally took advantage of this glitch and bought 8O+ of that item, and now they're selling it on the marketplace for a 1b profit each sale. Are you guys planning to do anything about this (isn't exploiting a glitch against ToS??)?

We do not plan to do anything for this. It was our mistake that the item was put into the shop for 29k instead of the Gaia Cash price. We have no plans on doing reversals for the items that were purchased during this time.

Question deals with the Monster Galaxy Forum.

Monster Galaxy is not on Gaia anymore.
People don't really use this forum for the correct reasons anymore.

There is a lot of bot spam in this forum that I have reported and it is still up.
Even after I was told that mods will look into it and take it down a few weeks ago by a staff member.

Just to prove my point look at these spamy threads found in this forum.
Some are misplaced threads, some are made by actual spam bots.

My question is...

Could you start moderating your less popular forums and get rid of possible dead forums such as the Monster Galaxy Forum?

We definitely will be looking into getting rid of some of our older/dead forums.

Will there ever be a time where we can have JavaScript on our profiles? I would love to have some cool effects on my profile. Like leaves falling for autumn or snow falling for winter.
This would be really cool to have.

More than likely not due to the possibilities of security issues.

Okay, I have a question since it has been bugging me for a while now. Is there any way to make it so that you can actually see the size of the images/gifs that you are going to use in a signature? I mean, I have been flagged twice for it and I had no idea that I had a large image size until then, and couldn't figure out a way for me to tell how big the file size was until I literally had to go to another site and use the same image to find out. It wasn't like the images were offensive or anything, just the image sizes were too big. I think this would help to cut down on the number of people having large gif/image sizes if we could actually see that they are too big or if a warning popped up when we were previewing the signature in question.

You can check the size of an image by right-clicking on an image and clicking "View Image Info" or "Properties" (depending on your browser). This will tell you how large the file size is and what the dimensions are.

The servers and firewalls are pretty consistently updated. In the tech world though it's pretty much an arms race.

This is a very serious question that's been bugging me for roughly 2 years.

Your rules state that no sexual actions and/or activities are allowed on gaia.

If that's the case, then why do a good portion of the items PROMOTE sexual actions and/or activities, thus contradicting the very rules y'all made?

Any insight on this would be appreciated. sweatdrop

We've always allowed a slight level risque or sexuality for users to embrace in as long as it doesn't cross a line. It's why we allow users to talk about sex with others as long as it isn't graphic. The items created are not created in order to actually promote sexual activity that crosses this line and are within our acceptable standards. Heck, there have been some items that we've actually had to ask not be released because they were too sexual. However, when users engage in sexual activity it crosses the line from an acceptable level of risque to flat out explicit content which is why we have our rules in place.

In the Religion & Morality forum I read this under the posting guidelines...

Magic, Witchcraft, and Paranormal Threads
These topics do not belong in the forum unless they are directly related to a religious or moral debate. If you want to discuss generic magic/paranormal topics, please use the appropriate forum (in most cases the General Discussion or Chatterbox forums).

I bolded the confusing part.

Wouldn't topics like that go into the Supernatural forum instead of the CB or GD?

Question is originally by ( Nenanah )

Correct, if I remember the Supernatural's forum rules correct, that would be the place. Sticky is outdated and created before we created the Supernatural forum.

Dealing with an issue that I have been noticing for awhile in the Religion and Morality forum.

I get that this is the place where everyone comes together to discuss religions, beliefs, whatever...
However people can not make any threads without having someone from a different religion come in and try to convert everyone.
These converting posts create an uneasy and somewhat hostile environment for other people.
It is also almost impossible to make a thread trying to see if there are other out there with the same or similar beliefs as yourself without having someone come in and telling you that you're wrong, or whoever/whatever you believe in doesn't exist. And posts like that also turn things into an uneasy and hostile environment.
Negative posts like that are a big turn off to other people, a lot of people wont bother making threads or post in there because people can be very insensitive and rude.

If people specify that they are looking for like-minded people in the first post then they shouldn't have to have the fear of facing other people from different religions constantly trying to challenge what they believe.
If anything people trying to convert others when it's clear that they aren't interested in it and people coming in and ruining a peaceful discussion among like minded people by telling them that they are wrong, hypocrites, or what they believe in doesn't exist it comes off as a form of bullying.

I'm not asking for you to ban people from posting in religion threads that are different from what they believe, I actually like asking questions and learning about other religions but I feel that there should be some rules to prevent others from trying to convert people when it isn't wanted, and rules to prevent others from challenging other peoples beliefs when it's stated in the first post that they aren't wanting to make a debate over things, just a peaceful discussion with like-minded people.

Could you please look over this forum and possibly revise the rules to make it more peaceful?
Right now there is a lot of bickering and rudeness going on, it's pretty sad to see.

Question is originally by ( Nenanah )

I agree, M&R's forum guidelines could probably stand to be reviewed and revised.

So back when I first joined Gaia in 2008, I made a thread, subscribed to it, and it promptly got banned, because I had no idea that the image I had used was pornographic (I was a child back then >_> )

To this day, I am still subscribed to a thread that got banned almost six years ago. Will you eventually create an auto-unsubscribe for whenever a thread gets blocks? It really should not count in my current thread subscriptions.

Question is originally by ( Hug the Pug )

We'll take a look into seeing if this is possible!

Are we allowed to use Gaia graphics and zOMG aspects to create a non-profit spin-off/remake of zOMG?

I know others have asked if you would sell the source or release it. Although those questions weren't answered, this is not related to the zOMG source code, and would like to keep this question separate from those.

You are allowed to use graphics so long as you aren't trying to make a profit off of it or commercialize it, go for it!

In recent weeks there has been an increase in viruses and other malware attached to ads aroud Gaia...are you aware/ working to fix this?

We know that there are some ads, particularly with Safari, that have been causing issues and we're looking into getting rid of those. This is actually something that a lot of other big websites are also having issues with. We are working with our third-parties to take care of this. Once we have an update we'll be informing the community.

What are all of the rules and limits on naked avatars now? I know the rules changed to allow toplessness, but how naked is too naked? What is considered sexual? What is considered too explicit?

We do allow for naked avatars now. However, we do not allow avatars to put themselves in obviously explicit poses. Explicit poses would be defined as any pose where there is something obviously going on of a sexual nature. Anything you would see in a porn film, for example. A good rule of thumb is, if you have to question whether or not your avatar is too explicit, it more than likely is.

Last week I raised some issues regarding the Religion and Morality forum. I just wanted to know if you have had a chance to look over the rules yet and if so are you going to make changes to make it harder for others to bully people with opposing beliefs.

We haven't had a chance yet, but it's definitely something that we will be addressing!

Can we please see more and/or better moderation in the GCD? Especially considering how much of a resource this forum is becoming - i.e. being used for ask the staff and etc.

Daily about half the topics in the GCD are spam or misplaced, and we're seeing a huge influx of off-site advertising threads as well. The only ones that are ever taken care of are the off-site advertising threads, despite people reporting the spam and misplaced threads repeatedly.

It sounds like GCD could probably stand to have more Forum Assistants rather than moderators, as FAs stand to be more proactive about removing the spam and misplaced threads, whereas moderators would be more focused on removing the actual TOS violations that hit GCD such as off-site advertising. Regardless, we'll see what we can do to get some more support for the forum!

There is a huge issue over in the Religion and Morality forum. Mods keep moving threads about Pagan/Wiccan religions over to the Supernatural forum. They should have the right to post about their religion in the forum designated for religions. Not a forum that is for creepypastas and horror stories. I surely hope that this is being done out of ignorance and you're not intentionally discriminating against others. The mods moving the threads aren't really willing to listen, and it's becoming quite irritating. Please can you look into this and stop?

Question originally asked by ( user wanted to remain anonymous )

This is something we can take a look into and figure out what might be going on in this forum! Sorry for the inconvenience!

Can the rules for the paw forum be changed? Suddenly a ton of threads in the paw forum have been moved to the chatterbox because they arent "paw related" and as stated before by the staff, you will not create any more paw centered subforums, so the paw community is asking that you change the rules of the paw forum. Instead of everything having to be paw centered maybe just make it a hub where all pawbased users can chat and hangout.

This is something that was can definitely consider! No guarantees that we will actually be able to do it, but we can put it under consideration.

So totally new at this but hey worth a shot!
Anyway my question is: Is there anyway to add a banning system to the forums?

I ask because a lot of RP, Charity and Art forums get a lot of hate from trolls and just over all rude Gaians. And while those who respect and follow the rules and report the person for their behavior there is no way to truly stop these people from coming back. So maybe by adding the banning system we can control who can come and who can't come into the threads keeping the black list of threads truly a black list. This also keeps those few Gaian's who have a stalker from coming in and seeing what they do and then getting harassed. Yes I know the ignore feature hits on some of that but at the same time it can't completely stop someone from causing issues. This is just my feelings though.

A banning system wouldn't actually solve this problem because you still wouldn't be able to restrict a user's mule accounts. The ignore list effectively does everything a banning system would do for you. If you do not like a user coming into your thread, simply ignore them and they can no longer come into your threads. A banning system would effectively do the same thing.
