Jeshi was standing guard near his den.

There was not much to guard, really. He did not own much of anything, and had no family or friends living with him to protect. He only had one other living creature staying in his den at the moment, actually, but that was enough to give him a very serious purpose.

He needed to make sure it stayed safe, and to do that, he would stand outside his home and make sure no one came over and got too curious.

Inside his den he had only one large pile of leaves and a fur he had gotten when he was much younger from someone who knew how to dry them into bed mats. The bed was large enough for him, of course, and made comfortable by his use. It was his bed. But he was not occupying it at the moment, and instead had to sleep on the cold ground of his den, because there was one very small occupant taking up the whole space.

A little rabbit, a young one by the size, was sleeping quietly, injured from either a run in with another lion or a bad fall. Whatever the case, Jeshi had found it and his soft heart did not allow him to hurt it, further or eat it as he usually might. Instead, he brought it home.

He did not want any other lions coming around and smelling it, thinking there was a snack for the taking inside. While it was under his care, he was going to make sure it stayed safe.

User Image The Pridelands were always very welcoming as far as prides of lions went. They had to be, if they wanted their Utopian way of life to live on. While Esona was an accomplished huntress, she also knew that not everything that moved was food. There was a time and place for eating, and there were some creatures that were just not worth the time and effort of killing.

That being said, when she smelled or noticed an animal that was injured, she always made sure to keep an eye on it for the next time she went out hunting. The smell of a weakened creature was what brought her nose to nose with Jeshi. Surprised to find a lion standing guard to what appeared to be a mostly empty den, she peered around the male with a curious expression on her face.

"What'cha hiding in there?" she asked, looking back up at Jeshi, her tail flicking back and forth. "A midnight snack? They taste better when you put them out of their misery, you know. All that anxiety and pain taints the meat." Whatever was in there it was small and certainly only a bite or two, but sometimes a little bird or bunny was what you needed as a picker-upper to get the day going.

"No, not a snack!" Jeshi said, moving to cut her off as she went to peer around him. He stood tall in front of her, placing his four paws firmly on the ground and giving her such a grumpy look, almost a pout, as he frowned at her. He shook his head, just to drive his point home.

"I am not going to eat it. It's just a baby and it was hurt. I'm just... helping it. I don't want you eating it either!"

He did not know this female, but he was not as threatening as he sounded. Defending a fluffy baby bunny as he was, he did not actually sound all that threatening, either. But he would never hurt someone else, especially not a lady. She deserved his respect and care, just as all others did. So if she did go for the rabbit, he was not really sure what he would do.

Hopefully his stern look would deter her. Or he hoped it was stern. Really, he just looked petulant.

"Please don't eat it, I just... it has the saddest little eyes and I don't want it to be hurt or killed. Don't tell anyone it's here!"

Esona pulled back in surprise when two pale eyes were before her own again. The male didn't appear angry, though, just steadfast and a bit pouty. It made her grin, and then laugh when he explained what it was he was guarding. A baby of some king? Probably a bunny, from the smell and the little squeaking noises she could hear occasionally. Oh no...that was just too cute.

"All right, mister guard, I won't eat it," she said, still snickering softly as she focused her gaze on the male once more. He looked as if one good snarl would startle him enough to let her buy, but there was something sweet about him wanting to protect the little bunny that made her usually brash demeanor take a back seat. She had been of the age to find males attractive for a few months now, and while physical appearance was always a plus, she had yet to find someone that was attractive to her by the way he acted. This big, strong lion protecting an innocent little bunny...well. That was speaking very loud and very clear to her.

"That's very kind of you, giving up your den for it like that," she said, her snickering dying away to be replaced with a normal smile. "Are you going to hope its parents return for it, or that it will get better? Because if it's hurt, it might just be dying in there slowly and painfully. I'll take a look at it if you'd like, my mother taught me a bit of medicine. I promise I won't hurt it or eat it," she added, giving a firm nod.

Jeshi looked a little relieved, sighing softly and nodding his head slowly when she said she was not going to eat his little ward. That was the primary concern at this point.

"Well, I have to let it hide in there, so it doesn't get eaten by something out here. I couldn't stay where I found it, the bushes were too small. Its parent was already dead, I found the remains."

He spoke seriously, as if this were his job, but his expression softened from stoic guard dog to gentle giant after a moment.

"I'm not really sure what to do with it, when it gets better. I just want it to be healthy first... then I guess I'll have to figure out what to do. Are you sure you won't hurt it? Or tell anyone its here?"

He looked worried, but he took a step to the side, letting her approach. He was on his toes, protective and worried, but he would appreciate the help if she could offer it. He was not sure the little thing would even survive for much longer. He moved to show her the way, though it was pretty obvious the giant bed was where the rabbit was. The little thing was curled up, sleeping, but it was obviously in pain. It had a claw tear down its side, and Jeshi was not sure how bad it was.

Esona made a soft clicking nose with her tongue against the roof of her mouth. There was something about killing a lone parent but not the young that didn't sit right with her. Sure, killing the young was one thing. It was over with quickly. But letting something that couldn't possibly survive on its own live after killing its only hope for protection was cruel.

"Yes, yes, I promise I won't hurt it," she said as she brushed passed the worrisome male. "Although I can't promise I won't tell anyone. I mean, I won't verbally tell them, but anyone passing by will be sure to know something is up if they see you standing out here and smell blood coming from in there."

She softened her voice as she approached the sleeping bunny. It was clear that it was in pain, and she lowered herself down to nuzzle its side just a bit. It flinched, but the wound didn't bleed any more. In fact, it looked as though the blood had dried up and created a rather gruesome but effective scab.

"Well...I don't think it will die," she said slowly as she lifted her head. "But it's in a lot of pain. What it really needs is some food and water and something to keep it warm."

Jeshi followed her into his den, watching her with a nervous expression as she nudged the bunny with her nose. He moved to step forward protectively, but stopped himself because her touch was gentle, and she did not seem like she was going to hurt him at all. Him or her, Jeshi was not really sure.

The bunny was too young to speak, and he was not good at gender identifying other species.

"What do rabbits eat?"

He was more than willing to go out and get it something to eat, but he did not think that bunnies ate the same thing as lions. In fact, he was quite positive they didn't, but he had never really needed to concern himself with their diet before. It felt silly to him, not knowing something so relatively simple. He looked at her bashfully, his eyes as big as a doe's.

"How can we ease its pain a bit? I don't like to see it suffering like that... it's just a baby..."

"Hm...grass?" Esona said, lifting her head from the rabbit to look at Jeshi again. She wrinkled her nose at the thought. Ew...grass didn't taste very nice. "Flowers too, maybe. Plants. But I think this one needs milk," she added, leaning down to sniff the young animal once more. It couldn't be very old...maybe a few weeks at best.

"Perhaps someone has a familiar that is nursing? They might be able to take them in," she offered, unsure of what else they could do to feed it. Lions milk certainly wouldn't do the trick for the bunny, but perhaps another non-meat eating creature would do. The question that followed, however, made her grin.

"Oh, I know that one. There's this funny looking plant that, if you chew it and put it on your wound, makes it go numb! It doesn't last very long, maybe a quarter of a day, but I'm sure it'll help this little one feel a bit better and rest easier. Hm..." She turned to face the lion, wondering if she should go or if she should send him instead.

"Want to go hunting for a plant? Or do you want to stand guard?"

Jeshi looked nervous, unsure of what to do. he did not know anyone with familiars, and he certainly did not have one of his own. How he was going to find one that could take care of this little bunny was beyond him. But he would certainly try: he did not want to leave the little thing hurt and alone. Someone needed to help it.

Jeshi was determined to find the right lion or familiar for the job.

"I... if I go and look for it, will you take care of the little one while I'm gone?" He was the kind who could not turn down a request for help, so if she wanted him to go and find the herb, he would do his best. He was just worried, always worrying. But now he seemed to have accepted her help and allowed her to become a part of his quest to help this rabbit, so he was looking at her intently, for direction.

"What should I go look for?"

Esona tilted her head just a bit as she surveyed Jeshi, a little grin on her face. It was rather adorable how concerned he was for the life of a little bunny that would probably be a snack a few months down the line. His concern was genuine and she wondered just how his big heart fit in that normal sized chest of his.

"How about you stay behind and watch it since I know what I'm looking for," she said as she got to her feet. "And you were doing such a good job before," she added with a little wink. "I'm Esona, by the way," she added as she moved away from the bunny. "I think I've seen you around but we've never met. So it's nice to meet you and I'll be back with what I need, quick as a...heh. Bunny," she said, snickering at her own little joke.

Moving slowly so as not to disturb the sleeping rabbit, she moved over to Jeshi, not at all ashamed as she rubbed up against his side. There was something attractive about a guy that was so sweet and tender on the inside. "Don't get too worked while you wait, mkay? You'll stress yourself out."

Jeshi nodded his head. That made more sense, but he was so wrapped up in trying to help the thing he was not thinking laterally. He sat down and looked a bit sheepish, perhaps realizing from the look she was giving him that he was being silly.

He couldn't help it. When he saw someone or something that needed protecting, he felt he was the only one around that could do it. It was not in him to walk away, from anyone at all, if they needed his help. He always repaid every debt, and he was determined to make a positive difference in the world around him.

Sometimes he got a little too wrapped up in that ideal.

"My name is Jeshi. Thank you so much for your help. I'm indebted to you. I'll... I'll stay here and keep watch."

He nodded his head and offered her a small smile, then waited patiently for her to return. he crouched down near the baby rabbit, watching it with wide eyes and paying attention to the way it was breathing and sleeping. He was going to make sure this little thing was safe, even if he had to adopt it himself.

"Jeshi. Nice to meet you," Esona said with a grin, letting her tail flick against Jeshi's shoulder before heading for the mouth of the den. "I'll be back!"

She was gone for about twenty minutes before she returned, a pouch she'd borrowed from her bother in her mouth. Inside were various flowers, grasses, and leaves, and she set them down in front of the bunny.

"Okay, we've got some basics, at least. This stuff I'll chew up and put on the cut, even though it's scabbed over. That'll help with the pain. As for food, my sister said she knows someone with a nursing rabbit familiar that can come and see if it wants any food. Honestly, the shock might be too much for it right now," she added as she began to separate the various vegetation she had brought back. "All we can do is offer it food, though. Don't feel too badly if it doesn't make it, okay?"

Jeshi waited quietly the entire time she was gone, not taking his eyes off the little bunny, ears drooping a bit as he wondered if the little thing was going to make it. He hoped so, they were now working so hard to save it, and he was thankful he had found someone willing to do what they could for it.

He looked up when she came back, ears perking forward as he sat up quickly, looking expectant and eager. He watched her and listened intently, nodding his head. He watched the herbs she brought back, trying to memorize what they looked like, just in case.

One never knew when they might run into another injured bunny.

"We'll do our best," he said, at her warning not to get too upset. He smiled at her, though, understanding, in a quiet way, that the bunny might not. He was just a gentle heart, Jeshi was, and it was hard to think of things like that. "I really appreciate all your help. Getting the herbs and asking for help... I'm just really glad, I wouldn't have been able to do any of that. So I owe you, and I'll make good on it, I swear."

Esona gave a little nod before settling down to get to work. She tugged some of the plants to her and began to chew them up, trying not to make a face at the bitter taste some of them had. She chewed until her jaw was sore, adding more and more plants until there was a massive wad of spitty pulp in her mouth. Only then did she spit it out onto the floor and, with the part that wasn't now encased in dirt, dipped her paw into the mess and smeared it onto the bunny's side. Gently, of course.

"Oh, sure you would have, if you weren't so focused on guarding the little thing," she said sweetly, looking up at Jeshi with a grin. "There's just some in this world that are better at standing around and looking tough, and there are those that are better at picking up grass and chatting." She gave him a little wink before returning to her task, making sure not to push too hard on the little bunny's side.

"All right. Now it'll set up a bit. That mother bunny should be by later," she added as she got to her feet. "Now I'm going to get some water to wash the taste of that out of my mouth. If it wakes up you can offer it some of the flowers to nibble on, but I don't know if it'll want solid food."

Jeshi watched her quietly, not wanting to interrupt or get in the way. His eyes were big and he looked as innocent as the rabbit itself. Though he was a larger, well built lion, he was a big softie on the inside. He looked like the guard he was, made to protect and serve, and happy to do so, but his heart tended to get in the way sometimes.

He couldn't help his soft spots.

Baby bunnies and pretty girls were two of them, and he was in the presence of both. He felt a bit stupid for how he had acted so far, knowing she probably thought he was an idiot, but he couldn't help who he was.

He smiled at her when she spoke, ears drooping a bit out of embarrassment, but at least she wasn't mocking him too hard. Gentle teasing he could take, because he had earned it.

"Thank you for all your help!" he said, when she was done, though he kept his voice low. "I will repay you for it, I swear to you that. I don't know how yet, but I owe you. You're a very kind lioness, and I appreciate it."
