Scritch Scritch Scritch.. For the past week there was some pest.. Some little horrible creature that kept waddling it's way down the alley of where Yrre lived and scratched at the door of the bakery. It unsettled Yrre, ESPECIALLY since his last interaction with an animal wasn't quite the best memory he had. The young dovaa had lost two fingers that day, and nearly had his eyes gauged out! There was no way he was going to let himself be mauled again..

But at the same time.. He needed to get back into the kitchen. Bae was refusing to feed him ever since he had learned that he was making a little pocket money... AND ever since he saw him sneaking out to see Karayan every now and again. For someone who really didn't care about him, he certainly put more and more restrictions on what he could and couldn't do. Like today.. The only chance for food was before lunch, when he had been out on the street peddling his sweets. By the time he got home, there was nothing left for him, and his brother was slumped against the table, sleeping in a shallow puddle of booze.

Yrre couldn't have just leave him there, so after quietly cleaning up and digging around for food and finding nothing, he weakly dragged Bae back to his bedroom. His stomach growled and screamed at him, begging for something to eat. At this point.. He only knew of one place where he could get something for certain.

Scritch Scritch Scritch.. THERE IT WAS AGAIN! If he hurried.. There'd be enough light to make it to Karayan's house... He didn't want to go but his stomach was going to eat itself alive.. And maybe the older man could make this scratching sound, this terrifying creature in the alley go away.

Having been to this mansion so many times, the guards simply let Yrre pass, knowing that the little dovaa only ever came for one reason. Now.. Where was that giant anyway..?

The party was in full swing by the time that Yrre arrived at the big house that Karayan and a few other members of his family lived in. It was the weekend so that meant a great, big, loud sort of party filled with talking, shouting, music, a lot of food, and celebration. The Mara had caused a lot of problems, making quite the mess for a while there, and after they were finally driven out there was the clean up that caused a lot of the fun that the family had to be put on hold. Finally though things seemed to have gotten back to normal, which would likely make this gather even more special to those who had arrived to be a part of it. Those working outside, letting in various guests, didn't even blink when Yrre arrived. He was a regular who was basically family according to both Karayan and Gram, so there was no reason to hold him up for even a moment.

Inside, if Yrre were to look around, he'd find the big Gaili in a battle with one of his equally large uncles, the two of them barring on one another in the most epic of all arm wrestling of all matches. All around them were other members of the family cheering on one side of the other, seeming to be quite caught up in the battle as well. If one took in the looks on the faces of the two 'combatants' as well the sweat it was obvious that the match had been going on for some time now. It wasn't hard to see why, both were equally as big, muscular, and strong, and both of them were Gaili Dovaa, so they were on equal ground as far as any sort of magical cheating was involved.

It was was something that would have gone on for a while had Karayan not spotted Yrre when he did. Eyes lighting up he called out, "Yrre! You came!" In an excited manner and it was in that split second of distraction that his uncle took full advantage, slamming Kara's arm down. It was a quick, powerful move that caused both Kara and the table to tip over and land on the floor. There was a moment of stunned silence, followed by raucous laughter as Kara sat up, laughing over his defeat. Still on the floor he held his hands out to Yrre, motioning him over, "Come see me little Fekarat!"

As peculiar as this place always seemed to be, the household seemed to be extra rowdy this evening. Not that they weren't always rowdy to begin with, it just seemed that everyone was extra excited, and gathered around the place, seemingly watching two people doing something. He was short, so Yrre had a hard time actually seeing anything, so for the meantime he had wandered over to the table with food on it, and promptly stuffed his face with a handful of meaty goodness. They weren't going to kick him out over that, but maybe next time they'd appreciate him being a bit neater.

After a few handfuls, feeling still hungry, but unwilling to eat anything else for the moment, he returned to the crowd of guests, worming his way in to the front to see what was the big deal. And there he was, the man he had been looking for, in an armwrestling match with someone who looked alot like him. Maybe another family member? They went on for a few minutes more before his friend saw him and lost instantly. The knowledge that he was able to cause a distraction pleased him greatly, to the point that even if Karayan was motioning to him for a gross hug, he obliged, moving over to him to give him a nice, warm squeeze.

"Looks like you lost. Ah well, right? I.. I uh.. I've missed you, and I came to see you.. I kinda need your help, and I was hungry so.. Yeah, but I DID come to see you, so keep that in mind."

Karayan chuckled when Yrre came over to him despite the fact that he was on the floor. He wrapped his big arms around the smaller Dovaa and dragged him into a tight hug. Once he'd gotten his hug he let his friend escape, at least to a degree, and he smiled down at him, "Lost? Oh, yeah! Haha, that's probably fine, not as though it's the first or last time that I've challenged my uncle to a match, at least this time we didn't break a table. Man, Gram nearly had a fit and kicked both out of the house for a while after that one." He said with a bit of a laugh, still able to remember that day clearly even now.

Wrapping an arm around Yrre he dragged himself to his feet and brought Yrre up with him, pausing a moment as he realized that he was feeling a bit lighter then last time he'd carried him about. Not a good thing but he was saying that he was hungry and there was plenty of food, so maybe they could make up for that? Giving a smile he said, "How about you go and get yourself a big plate of food and then we can chat about what you need help with." He said as he set Yrre down on his feet, giving him a pat on the head before turning back to his uncle, "Hey! Old man! We need to flip the table back before Gram shows up and kicks us out again!"

The man turned to look over at him, to the table, then nodded, "Yeah, can't have Mom seeing this if we want to keep from getting our backsides handed to us." He said with a chuckle, moving to help Karayan to pick up the big, heavy table so that they could set it back down on its feet. Once that was done, and the chairs were replaced, the challenges began anew. Karayan would let others take Uncle on for now though since the younger Dovaa had come all the way here to get his help. He wondered what was up... it was a bit late for shopping, so it must be something else. What though? Hmm... well, he supposed he'd see soon enough he thought to himself.

There was a sort of frailness that was about Yrre that he was so very unused to. Maybe it was from physical weakness, but it felt absolutely terrible, even in Karayan's embrace. He wouldn't let that show, and after a moment of hugging he tried to pull away. He was too weak too, even if he was in full tip top shape. For now he remained in his warm arms, letting himself be picked up and set back down while the men flixed the table.

The mention of food was taken eagerly, and Yrre went back to the table, piling piece upon piece atop of his large plate, and finding himself a corner to sit in while he waited for Karayan to be done with cleaning up. Everyone seemed to be laughing and having a grand ol' time, and even the angry young boy managed a smile on his face. And he waited there until Karayan could come to his side again. The food was far far too tempting though, and he promptly began to eat.

Karayan laughed as he moved over to the table, stacking up a plate of his own, then looked around a moment to try to figure out where Yrre had gotten off to. It took a moment before he spotted the boy istting a short distance away, tucked away into the corner. The little fekarat sure was a little wall flower, wasn't he? No matter, he seemed to be eating so it didn't really matter where he sat or if he was socializing. Trotting over he plopped down next to Yrre, setting his plate down, and set to eating off of it, "Once you're done with that you should really try the cake! My aunt made it, she's a master at making cake look like other things. The one she made looks like a defeated Rock Mara." He said, giving a laugh. The look of the cake was just funny to him, especially after having to battle with such things himself.

Looking over at Yrre he said between bites, "That what the party is for, a celebration of them getting driven out as well as us getting everything back in order. It took a lot of work and we weren't able to have a good party for a while. No fun at all but this party marks things being back on track." He explained, all but inhaling his meal before he added, "I am glad that you were able to make it for this party. It's like a blessing from Abronaxus, having you appear here tonight." It would appear as though having his friend appear out of no where was something that pleased Karayan like nothing else could.

"Mmm, so! Tell me, what's up? Are we going shopping again? Some sort of night market?" He asked, sounding quite curious if Yrre was onto something when it came to some sort of interesting market that sold stuff at night. His eyes light up then before he asked, "Or did you bring me some of whatever you baked the other day?" Now that would be nice... though he supposed that it wouldn't really require Kara's help unless of course Yrre needed help with eating the food he'd made?

"Really? She can do that? Man.. Maybe I should ask her about learning from her sometime.. Not that they'd really give me too much time, but it would be fun to watch atleast." The whole Mara thing seemed like it never happened. As soon as they were here, they were gone and there seemed to be no traces left of what happened in his neighborhood. Then again, that place always seemed superbly dilapidated so even if there was some damage by their invasion, it might not have been readily noticed. This was a good reason to celebrate though. From personal experience he knew just how hard this family worked in keeping others safe, Karayan especially with what he did with that little halfling girl and himself.

To have his presence called a blessing forced a blush to rise up on Yrre's face as he shook his head.

"Naw, you know me, I'm a greedy little thing, and every time I see you I have to ask for something. Eer.." What he had baked.. Well, after a bit of digging around he had finally managed to make the darned things but they tasted awful. Even with the mentality that Karayan would probably eat anything he gave him, it kinda sorta maybe felt wrong to actually go through with feeding him the pet food.

"Not quite? Uh, turns out it was kinda pet food? I don't really have any pets, but I DID bring some. You have that weird... Evil dragon thing, right? Here." He reached into his bag that he brought along with him to shove extra food into, and pulled out a small tin. "She can have one of these... I won't even charge. Don't know if she'll like them or not but.. If she does, maybe I'll start selling them along with my normal sweets."

He paused for a moment, trying to think of the best way to go about saying this without sounding overly needed and sad and scared.. But there wasn't really another way to put it... Well, if he was going to sound pathetic, he might as well milk it out that way. Maybe then Karayan would come and help him immediately instead of waiting for the party to die down.

"Well... There's.. There's this thing that comes to the bakery each night.. I don't know what it is but it's terrifying me.. Every night it comes to the door and scratches at the bottom of it, and it's too scary to go out there, knowing that it's just wandering around and waiting for me to come out. The last time I went out there... This happened.." He held up his hand, wiggling around the fingers that were left. It was definitely peculiar because he could still feel those missing fingers, but the spaces were empty.

"You're big and strong, Karayan. And I trust you and I'm sure you can help with this thing, whatever it is. You kept us safe from the Mara, so.. So some random animal will be no problem, right?"

Karayan smiled and nodded, "I don't see why not, I am sure that she would be more then happy to bake with you. She does it a lot, not just for parties here, but because her husband eats a lot! I mean even more then me if you could believe it." He said with a laugh, motioning over the large Gaili man that was even wider then Karayan was that he'd been arm wrestling with a moment ago, "That's her husband over there and... yeah, you met their son, you remember Johan, right? The grumpy face Peisio that healed your hand for you?" Kara quickly looked around, as though he expected his cousin to appear from no where when he mentioned his name and called him 'grumpy face' but much to his delight he seemed to still be off somewhere else in the house.

Turning back to his friend once more he gave a little laugh, "Greedy little thing? You? Ha! I had to practically force you to get a present last time we went out if recall right." He said, reaching out to pat Yrre on the head, "If you asked I'd be more then happy to spoil you but you never really seem interested." It was pretty odd, to find someone that didn't want all sorts of presents in the same manner as Yrre, but one day he'd be able to win him over! Of this Karayan was certain!

"Eh? Weird evil dragon thing?" He asked, blinked, then started to laugh more heartily this time, "You mean Ember? You don't have to worry about her, she is over there right now. Talk about someone who is actually spoiled." Were Yrre to look in the direction that Kara was pointing he'd see the little fairy dragon hanging out with the youngest members of the household. They were all fawning over her, petting her, and giving her treats, everything that it took to win the little creature over and make her their best friend for the time being. The only thing that would win her over more were sparkling items but for now she seemed to be content with snacks. Tucking away the one that Yrre had made for her he said, "I will see about giving this to her later though. Do you want her to know its from you? She might beg for more later if she knows." He cautioned, leaving it up to Yrre.

At the mention of the problem he was having instantly he found himself wondering about it, then asked, "Why isn't your brother chasing it off?" Didn't he have a brother he found himself thinking then asked hesitantly, "I mean... the Mara didn't get him, did they?" He'd feel awful if that were the case and he was asking about a family member that was dead. That would be the worst blunder of his life time for sure. Shaking his head he decided that it didn't matter. If his brother was dead, busy, or unable to chase the thing off he would help regardless, "I don't mind or anything, I can get rid of... well, whatever it is for you." He just felt that Yrre's brother should be helping instead of letting some wild beast hassle his brother... a thought he kept to himself as he didn't want to insult his friend.

"Right, I remember him! He was nice, even if.. A bit grumpy. I do appreciate what he did though." It seemed like so long ago since he had come here the first time, hand all torn up and blood dripping everywhere. Sometimes he wondered just how different life would have been if there had never been a meeting between him and this kind, loving Dovaa before him.

Even now, as he had his head pat he stared up in awe at Karayan, trying to figure out why exactly, WHY did he do this? Why was he so kind all the time? Every little smile and hug and pet, was there some sort of larger purpose behind it all? Of course not, it was just because... Well, just because they were friends. It felt so weird to say that at all still. But he was more than happy with it.

His eyes followed to where Karayan pointed and couldn't help but snicker. He was right about her being spoiled. and shook his head. "I don't have the ingredients to make too many more. And I kinda wanted to try to sell these ones." If they sold well, then he could buy more ingredients and.. A never ending cycle, that's what it would be.

"Tch. My brother honestly doesn't do anything except come home, beat me, eat all of the food, and then fall asleep in a puddle of booze. Do you REALLY expect him to do anything like that for me? If he even knew I was trying to get into the kitchen.. " He shuddered at the very thought. Books and tables and chairs had all been thrown at him before but if his brother had found out that he had tried to go walking into the bakery again... After the accident with the baowi.. He didn't even want to think about it.

"Yeah, so.. I'd rather you help me, okay?"

"Oh? Well, let me know if you want to go shopping for more ingredients sometime. I am not exactly a morning person but I will get up for you." He said, giving a little flutter of his wings. Yrre seemed to be one of few who was actually able to drag Karayan out of bed and get him to do anything in the morning. The only other person capable of such a feat was his Gram, meaning that Yrre was up there when it came to the level of importance in Kara's head. Giving a toothy grin he said, "Maybe next time we will even see about getting you something nice to wear on your horns, my treat of course." They'd talked about it before but Yrre had already seemed happy enough with the present he'd got that day, which made it hard for Kara to spoil him.

The smile on his face seemed to falter though when Yrre spoke of his brother in a manner he never had before. After hearing it all he couldn't help but to think that the man was more then a waste of space, he was also a threat. After a moment he said, "Wait, wait... eats all the... is that why are you so small and light?" He'd always thought that maybe it was just because he wasn't selling enough of his treats or maybe because he spent too much on ingredients or something. Maybe because he just didn't have enough money to spend on food because... who knew, he had one thing or another he spent too much on. To learn that Yrre was underfed because he had a drunk, abusive brother who eat everything and wouldn't share? The idea was sickening, especially given where Kara had grown up.

Dragging in a deep breath, doing his best to calm himself, Karayan finally said, "Why? I mean... why bother to chase it off? You could just stay here and then you don't have to worry about that monster or your brother anymore." He said, sliding one arm around Yrre so that he could drag him closer, looking down at him, "It would better, safer, and a lot more fun for you to just stay here with us. I know Gram won't mind."

He messed up. He slipped up and said too much. He played this game just too hard and revealed too much and now he wasn't going to be let go. Even so, Yrre tried to pull away from Kara, standing up so that he could face him head on with enough distance between them that if he needed to escape, he could.

"I don't.. I don't need your gifts or anything, Karayan. I don't need your charity or anything like that. My size and weight aren't your concern, I didn't come here for that. I came here for one thing and one thing only and if.. If you don't want to help me, that's okay. I'm not mad. I may look it, but I'm not. I'd rather you not think or worry or stick your nose into my home life. You didn't know, and it's my fault for letting you know. So.. Yeah, Just forget it, okay? You don't need to help me with this." He tucked the tin he had with the cookies back into his bag, fully preparing to go home alone. It was.. still light-ish out right now. If he ran all the way back, he could be home before the dark came about all the way.

"In the end.. It doesn't matter what you think about him. I don't have oodles and oodles of family like you do, Kara. I only have him. And as messed up as some things may seem, I love him and won't turn my back on him." Maybe.. Just Maybe it really WAS stupid to think this way. Maybe Karayan was right in wanting him to stay. But Baecere was the only family he had and he wasn't going to give that up. Then he really would be alone.

Kara shook his head, "They are my concern though, I always worry about you Yrre!" He said, taking a step after the little Dovaa, trying to keep him from being able to get away, "You seem to be getting smaller and smaller every time I see you and now I know why... why would you think that I wouldn't find cause for concern?" It all made sense now and it was something Karayan didn't like, not in the least, especially the fact that he had been so oblivious to everything that was happening under his nose. He should have realized sooner, should have done something sooner, even if it meant kicking some sense into Yrre's idiot brother! It sounded as though that was what the man was in need of. Who could be so mean to their little brother? Especially someone as small and cute as Yrre? Sure, the kid could be bossy and he hissed like a fekarat that was being pet the wrong way, but that didn't matter! Johan could be just as bad but Kara would never be so mean to him!

As Yrre started to pack up his things, looking as though he were actually going to leave. He was saying that he was here for one thing and that if Kara didn't want to help him that he didn't have to. Eesh... wait, was he sticking his nose in where it didn't belong? Well, maybe... but still, Yrre was his friend so he couldn't just ignore everything!

What Yrre said next though had him hurrying to catch up to him, reaching out to catch hold of his hand, "Yrre! I know you don't have 'oodles' of family like me but you could! Just stay here with us and you would be surrounded by family!" He motioned with his free hand to those who were all around where the two of them were standing, many Dovaa of all the different clans, a lot of which Yrre hadn't met yet. A whole house stuffed full of people that Kara was offering to him, "I mean... I know we aren't blood but I love you none the less, so you could just stay with me..." He said, giving Yrre a lopsided smile.

"Well, you shouldn't! You should hold no concern for me at all! And you OBVIOUSLY didn't think much about it if it took til this to even mention it!" Whether or not Karayan had mentioned it previously slipped his mind. He didn't want to be here, and every inch of his body regretted it. And with the more nervous his voice got, the louder he got.

The hand that grabbed his own was rejected, slapped away with the most hateful of glances he could muster. But they fell away so fast, so quickly and he shook his head hard.

"Stop it! Just.. Just STOP IT, Karayan! Stop talking as if you could really offer me anything! Stop talking like you could make this hurt go away, because it won't help! Just Stop.." It seemed so over done, like how it was in plays.. But it was the first time he had ever heard someone say they loved him. It was gross and uncomfortable. And for that, he ran. He ran right out of the house, out of the front door, to the gates.

And that's where he was. Baecere, his cheeks red from his drink, his eyes on fire, and the red of his hair shone in the night from the fire that flickered, lighting the path. Those Eyes, fiery and full of contempt for the child who escaped the house. And the gaze froze Yrre in place. He hadn't locked eyes with the man in years.. And Now he was here.

"There you are.. You little.." The older man could hardly get his words out, but he was still fast, and he quickly closed the gap between himself his brother. His hands felt like fire on Yrre's wrists, and surely he could easily snap it with his strong hands if he just squeezed down hard enough. Yrre gave no response to the man who's breath smelled of scotch and wine. His eyes finally turned down, knowing that if there was even a bit of a struggle, he might.. Here might be a burn on him. He shouldn't have been surprised though, even now the bottle remained in Bae's hand.

"Come now, you little thief! Back home where you belong!"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:06 pm

Karayan stood there, a bit shocked, as Yrre slapped his hand away and completely rejected what he'd said. He found himself uncertain of what to say, as well as what it was that he should do. He didn't want to let him go back to a brother who obviously didn't know how to correctly care for him but he couldn't very well force him to stay now could he? If he did that he would go from friend to kidnapper... though a part of him wondered now if Yrre would still consider him a friend or would he never come back again? Should he have kept his mouth shut and just gone with him to take care of the pest problem? He wasn't really sure, especially when he felt that the bigger pest that should be 'dealt with' was Yrre's brother, not the critter that was scratching around at his door. That wasn't something he felt would go over well with Yrre though, he seemed to care for his brother despite the fact that he didn't really sound like that good of a person.

So the it came down to the question of what it was that he should be doing at this point, how he should handle the situation, and he was coming up blank. He didn't want Yrre to leave thinking that he really didn't care, not when he did. The little guy was a good friend to him, one that he cared about and enjoyed spending time with, he should know that! Giving a grumbling sound he shifted in place, trying to decide what it was that he should be doing when he finally started after him. Maybe they could talk this out? He was certain but they could at least try right?

Out front, as Yrre came bursting out the door, another set of eyes, far different from those of Baecere, turned to look in his direction. The Peisio looked him over, then looked away, that was until he was suddenly hit with an rather assaulting scent, that of rather cheap liquor that he knew wasn't something that one would get at a party like this. No, Gram only had the best of everything, alcohol included. Turning Johan found himself looking at the one who had appeared, a Firani Dovaa that he'd never seen before, who seemed to be hassling Kara's little friend. Giving a great sigh he pushed away from the wall, feeling a bit on the put out side. Here he'd come outside to get some fresh air and a break from people, it seemed that Abronaxus had other ideas for him. Best that he dealt with this situation before someone else, someone who had less in the way of mediating skills, saw this weirdo hassling Yrre or else there would likely be blood he thought to himself as he started over toward the pair.

"I'd advise against that, the little whelp there has a rather stupid friend inside that might take it wrong if he sees you man handling him." Johan said as he approached, not really wanting for Karayan to see this. His cousin was a complete and total moron after all, not to mention a Gaili. The yard would be in shambles all over again if he were to come out here since he'd likely start flinging his powers about. Giving the best smile he could muster, which wasn't much since Johan wasn't exactly the most friendly and social of people, he said, "How about we just go about this in a more amiable manner, hm?"

"Don't ya be tellin' me what to do with this brat! He's MY brat! He's MY responsibility, and i'll damn well near kill him for hangin' out with the likes of you!" Baecere continued to move towards the gate, half dragging Yrre behind him. "Who the hell does that Pesio think he is. You are my kin, i can do whatever the hell I want with you!"

The Smaller dovaa quickened his step to keep up with him. He had wanted this, after all, to go back with his big brother instead of remaining with the family here. And he knew he would be beat when he got home and all he could do is glare angrily at the man who hurt him. But it wasn't as if he could just leave him behind. His brother, his blood. That bond was supposed to be strongest, right?

Then why did he just want to run back inside to Karayan? He wanted to go back into that warmth and love that just leaked out of every crack and crease in the house. He wanted to eat the warm food and watch the warm family that swirled around like eager little fish in one of those fancy ponds. Just for the night, right? He could stay just for the night, he could handle the repercussions for it later. So he dug his heels in the ground, and tried to pull his arm away from Baecere.

What he had not accounted for was just how weak he was, and just how strong Baecere could be when drunk. There was no holding back, no inhibitions when he was intoxicated. In response Yrre's hesitance, the Firani roughly pulled him forward by his wrist, causing him to trip and stumble forward onto his knees.

"You little wretch.. Who do you think you are, tryin' to get along with the likes of these rich bastards. You belong in the gutter with the rest of us, and I swear by Abronaxus' you will learn your place!" The bottle he held was slammed to the ground near Yrre's hands, pieces bouncing up and hitting his forearms in several places, over older scars and surely making new ones. And it hurt, gods did it hurt, and for the first time since his mauling by the baowi he screamed out.

Someone would come and help him. Surely this time they would! He didn't want this, not anymore, he hated this, he hated it so much!
