It had been a crazy few weeks to say the least. While Jack had enough decency to not interrupt Ian as he prepped for the proposal (especially because he doubted the guy wanted to hear about body snatching on his saccharine date with the duck), save for their short exchange about what to wear, there was one person's vacation he didn't mind interrupting repeatedly in the least.

Hope your date excursion whatever the ******** thing is going decently.

It was sincere, surprisingly. Jack felt uneasy about that bite mark—maybe even slightly moreso because it happened on his watch. In complete darkness, but on his watch nevertheless.

The last thing Finn really wanted was for his vacation to be interrupted, but that was apparently asking for far too much, considering who he had decided to be friends with. Still, as he read the text sent from Jack, he found that he actually somewhat appreciated that the other man was giving him a little update on what was going on back on the island.

And also made Finn even more happy not to be there.

medigel
Text to Jack: The ******** two day leave of absence (with company to keep me warm and satisfied at night) is going ******** thank you for asking

Finn had no idea over texts (and actually in person most of the time as well) if Jack was being sarcastic or genuine, but he would have answered the same either way.

Quote:
Text to Jack: Great. Make sure whatever mess you made is cleaned up before I get back.

Because obviously whatever it was had to be Jack's fault. Entirely.

At least their conditions hadn't changed. He made a mental note to add that to their files, though it didn't make him relax. Incubation periods were total unknowns in the realm of the supernatural. For all he knew, Finn would get corrupted again in a year, or a month, or a week, or never again. His money was definitely not on the last one.

Finn was busy, so his replies didn't always come right away. He was on holiday, after all, and while he was curious enough to have decided to be interested in what was going on, he apparently did not feel the need to have all of the information laid out in front of him as soon as possible. The text's Jack would receive next were at least an hour after the last.

Text to d**k ******** MY EYES

There was an hour and a half gap before the other texts came: either Jack was dedicated to his show of disgust, or work had pulled him away. The answer of course was both.

Finn waited for anything further from Jack, but after about five minutes of waiting he gave up and went back about his own business, which, at that moment, meant spending the next two hours getting his a** handed to him in a vigorous afternoon of paintball.

Afterwards he checked his phone again.

medigel
Text to Jackie: Not what I meant, a**-wad. I'm saying that I don't disclose what I dream about to Ripley, and he doesn't, or at least hasn't yet, disclosed his dreams to me.

As he read over the rest of the texts, however, he frowned. His last encounter with Chel had been less then pleasant, and now, with this new information, he had no idea if the Chel he had seen last had even been her.

Quote:
Text to Jackie: Well.....Nobody ever said she was smart.

There would be radio silence from Finn's end as he processed all of this new info. In retrospect, texting Jack back while sitting in the backseat of a taxi with Ripley, which was taking them back to their hotel room so that they could get ready for the rest of their day and evening, had probably been a bad idea. He wasn't in private, he couldn't react the way he wanted to, which was a simultaneous urge to beat himself over the head with something for being so stupid, and putting his fist through several walls because <******** that stupid b***h for telling Jack.

And if she had told him, who else had she spilled to?

He felt that the boiling anger within him was not even in the slightest bit misplaced. What had happened between he and Chel had been a private thing. If she'd felt the need to spill, she could have done so without giving his name. She was, without a doubt, a careless, inconsiderate idiot, and now, nothing would change his mind about that fact. In the hollow black void that was his anger, he found himself staring at the other texts without reading them, only one sentence glaring back at his cold, empty stare.

The same one where she tried getting you to have sex with her.

Maybe it wasn't as bad as he thought. The word tried could have meant a great many things. It could have meant that she told Jack that he'd simply rejected her, not that she had ******** cried and he had left. He clung to this last shred of his hope, and lets face it, at this point dignity as well, and finally let himself take in the rest of the texts.

And then, at least fifteen minutes later, as the taxi was approaching the city limits, he texted the other man back.

medigel
Text to Jackie: I ******** knew it. I knew she had a thing for you but when I told her she did, she denied it.

He felt at least some small sense of validation, though now knowing that she had cried because of Jack of all ******** people, was sickening, for more reasons than one.

Quote:
Text to Jackie: Sounds like she's got it bad for you, too. That's some crazy s**t right there. Like, crazy ex s**t. Full blown suicidal if-I-can't-have-you-then-life's-not-worth-living crazy ex s**t. If you're lucky, it won't become if-I-can't-have-you-nobody-will crazy ex s**t.

Finn would know all about crazy ex s**t. He had been that person, once.

Quote:
Text to Jackie: Just to be safe, you better start checking that she doesn't try to get you blown up too. Don't forget to check under your bed every night for a bomb

Quote:
Text to Jackie: I was already being serious, but seriously, that is really ******** up. If she's capable of being that retarded just over not getting to be your girlfriend, then who ******** knows what else she might end up doing.

Finn was saying this all as Jack's bro, his supposed "best friend", as somebody who, to some extent, could dig deep and find the capacity to care when it suited him.

Quote:
Text to Jackie: I would also tell you that if you were smart, you'd stay away from her, but I think I know you better than that. Just watch your ******** back and for the love of god, don't be an idiot and sleep with her again.

Quote:
Text to Jackie: I don't care how bad of a lay your fake girlfriend is or how great Chel's tits are. Try not to literally ******** things up.

Maybe he was being a little more harsh than he might have been if Chel had kept her mouth shut about what had happened between them, or maybe this was exactly how Finn would have reacted either way. Chel was a friend, but Chel wasn't his best friend. He felt bad for her, in a way, but he also knew that she had dug her own grave.

The anger had ebbed away anyways, short lived, stifled and packed away to some dark recess of his mind. All he felt again, as he often did, was a cold indifference, the same that was nearly always reflected in his gaze.

The silence wasn't agonizing by any means, but Jack did care what Finn thought. Hell, he usually cared at least a little what his friends' opinions were on things involving himself, regardless of his abrasive rebuttals to each and every time they voiced them. So the longer he went without an answer, the more he imagined he was going to get chewed out or something.

Coffee, as usual, soothed him. He worked on filing some records until his phone buzzed. Jack considered the messages for a while, setting the phone down to continue his work; much like digesting personal information, this too took time.

He hadn't quite thought about the extremes that could be taken. Chel's loyalty had, at least up until the Merlin incident, gone mostly unquestioned. She was like a dog, an energetic, disgustingly steadfast dog, but she had never really bared her teeth--at least not at him. Probably because she thought she was in love. Chel was stupid, absolutely, but not crazy.

Still, if there was one thing he had learned, it was that people were different creatures under stress. People changed.

Text to d**k Finnicky:
Honestly I get the opposite read on her: the last thing she wants is me dead or hurt or whatever. If I told her to jump off a bridge she'd probably do it, she's already practically at my beck and call.

But I'll definitely keep what you said in mind. Can't be too careful with people here. Everyone's some form of abnormal.

And his Tower dream was still hard to shake sometimes. He'd already done quite a bit of damage to some people, Chel included. At some point it would come back to bite his a**, he was sure.

The replies he got from Jack in return were much what he actually expected, though perhaps a bit more on the soft side than Finn was used to. Making excuses for Chel seemed to be the theme, but no matter what Jack had to say on the matter, there was one thing that was now clear to the moon intermediate.

He now knew that he couldn't trust her, instead of just guessing that he couldn't, as he did with everybody else. In a way, it made him feel almost vindicated in his own suspicious and cynical ways.

As for Jack...Finn had said all that he meant to say on the matter. It wasn't his job to convince the other man or make his decisions for him. He wasn't his babysitter.

Everyone on that island is some brand of crazy. He supposed he was being a little too gentle about it in this case because Chel was a friend; hell, between her and Abbi, he swore he'd wake up one day as a different person. How disgusting would that be? But Jack amused himself with the idea that maybe Deus should add that disclaimer to their recruitment process: like a flyer saying, Be one of humanity's saviors, still deal with crazy coworkers! Have a normal life while fighting the supernatural!

Seussi
Text to d**k Finnicky:
Yeah yeah, different words for the same thing.

The second text surprised him, though. He wondered what would be the easiest thing to answer, because Jack rarely gave anyone implicit trust. Moments, yes, like when they had watched each other's backs briefly in the Tower and when they had both thrown Cass's body to save themselves. But both had been for mutual benefit. He knew Finn, but he also didn't know Finn. People kept changing inspite of his staunch belief that it was just an act, and it was often hard to read the man with emotionless eyes. The Tower dreams still haunted him as well, however wildly skewed it was to make him paranoid of everyone in general.

To be fair, though, Finn was given that chance more than most. They had been bachelor bastards together, a title that had merely switched to generally dickish bro friends without losing the meaning of the original.

Quote:
Text to d**k Finnicky:
I trust you enough to not make the same stupid mistakes and to alert me if something does end up happening. We've had each other's backs before after all and I'm hoping that continues.

That was the only real answer he could provide openly: a truth in a joke.

Quote:
Text to d**k Finnicky:
Your turn. You trust me?
PostPosted: Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:11 pm

Jack's reply was almost political in just how very carefully it was phrased. It did not come straight out to say that he trusted Finn implicitly, and for that Finn was actually relieved. If the other man had done so, the moon intermediate would have believed him to be lying, or, barring that, to be very very foolish indeed.

medigel
Text to Jackie: Good answer. Very tactful.

He read the follow up text with an almost bemused expression on his face. He had expected as much, but to be fair he had also expected Jack to just say no, but of course the answer could not be so cut and dry, nor so black and white. Apparently, with Jack, there were shades of grey.

Unfortunately, that might have altered Finn's answer a little.

Quote:
Text to Jackie: More so than most people. You know me, though, Jackie-boy. I could never fully trust anybody. I don't imagine you do either.

Text to d**k Finnicky:
But it's very human of us to ask anyway isn't it?

And for some reason, he laughed to himself. Like he knew what human meant anymore.

There was always a middle area to be found. People could be parsed down to simple facts, but they could be so much more. A bleeding heart could leave someone to die. A b***h could be trained to be a monster (so weak, so very weak). An a*****e could ask if he could be trusted, a black or white question, be given a gray answer instead, and be grateful for not having the full weight of responsibility.

He wanted to believe he could be trusted. But wanted and could weren't the same as is and can. Jack knew. Finn knew. He wondered how long they'd be the only ones privy to it, how long it'd go before they all found themselves in a situation where dog eat dog was preferable to sticking together. And he wondered how quickly Ripley would get discarded if that were the case, or if Finn would prove his hypothesis of dangerous bias that he had held ever since he'd learned that a ghostly Shiloh had chosen to save Ian without so much as a second thought to the rest.

Quote:
