Thinking had never been Ariel's strong suit. It wasn't that she was particularly stupid, but that she preferred action to thought. Feeling to reasoning. And the best way, she had found, to turn off her brain was to beat the s**t out of something.

The run in with that squire had been a horrible, horrible event... not only had she lost the starseed she'd worked to get, and been beaten soundly for it... being nearly choked to death had reminded her far too acutely of another time she had been helpless and afraid. Now it plagued her mind and it pissed her off.

SMACK.

Tape-wrapped fist hit the punching bag in a vicious blow, sending it swinging. She ignored the pain of bruising in her hands.

SMACK SMACK. THUMP.

Two fists this time and then the ridge of a shin met the tough exterior as a fringe of black hair brushed damp cheeks below burning red eyes. It had been, what... six years now? Over half a decade... and in that time she had worked damned hard to get where she was. Honed her skills, built up muscle and knowledge... turned herself into someone who would never need to feel that way again. That's why it rankled so much... all her hard work, thrown out the window in less than a minute. <******** a*****e Squire...

Ariel plastered his face across the red leather of the bag as she beat on it, putting her weight behind the trained motions until the bag was swinging so hard she had to stop and grab it, taking a moment to catch her breath so her ample chest wasn't straining her sports bra quite so much. Bared skin still sported the bruises he'd given her, but she hadn't bothered to hide any of it. She didn't care what people thought of her battered appearance... she had the perfect built in excuse, should anyone ask, which they never did.

Sighing, the tall woman straightened up and twisted her torso from side to side, stretching out her lats and obliques. Next time, pretty boy. You won't walk away so pretty any more.

It was hard to miss the sound of someone taking out their fury on a punching bag. Kamboja knew the sound, he'd heard it so many times when his own fists beat a rage against the weighted leather. Even while he was concentrating on this trainee, his mind kept wandering to the kindred spirit trying to destroy an inanimate object. He was intrigued.

"Okay, Anya, take a break. Go do some cardio."

A lean brunette smiled appreciatively through heaving breaths and nodded at him, immediately excusing herself to the water fountain on the other side of the gym. The dreadhead turned his attention to the curvy woman he had seen over little Anya's head, watching as she leaned into the punching bag to catch her breath. She sure was angry. He stripped the punching mitts off of his fingers and tossed them against the near wall, where they hit and fell onto an unoccupied bench. Then he scooped up his water bottle and crossed the gym at a lazy pace, keeping her in his sight.

Instead of getting within range of her fists, mostly because he didn't want to be the target of a stray punch, he leaned into the wall and watched her stretch.

"Did you win this time?" A thick brow raised as he pulled the top of his water bottle open with his teeth and took a long sip, letting his gaze trail over the smattering of bruises on her skin. She knew how to fight, so she certainly wasn't the typical victim.

A voice... a male voice, pulled Ariel's attention up and she slanted a red glance over at the beefy figure leaning against the wall. Dark eyebrows drew together as her nose wrinkled and she lifted her arms over her head, bending to the back and sides until she felt her body loosening up a bit. Anger made her tense, necessitating breaks like this to ease up the clenching muscles in her bare midsection and shoulders.

"I don't see how its any of your business." Ariel retorted as she dropped her arms, taking the step back to where she had left her own water bottle and a towel. The water slid down her throat with blessed coolness and she patted the shine from her abs and back of her neck, scrubbing at the shaved hairline at the base of her skull. "Don't you have a bar to grunt and groan under, or some bouncy little gym bunny to flex for?"

There was acid and dismissal in the tone. He looked like just another muscle-bound idiot of the sort that frequented this place... happy to work out for the pleasant burn and the cut form rather then the pure function she came here for. She worked out to be in the physical condition to beat people the ******** up, not so she looked pretty in a bikini. She gave him a once over though, appreciating at least the pleasant form. Shame he was a guy... a hot chick would have gotten a more pleasant greeting.

A half grin curled the edge of his lips as she snapped back at him and basically went about her business as if he didn't matter. That was fine. He liked the feisty ones, they were always more of a challenge.

"Well, if one of our members is out getting her a** kicked, it's definitely my business." He pushed himself off of the wall and reached out to push the bag with the tips of his fingers, frowning as he pressed it from the top to the bottom. "You might want to move down to the next one over though, the sandbags in this one need to be replaced." He pushed it slightly, watching the swing and shrugging. "The weight's all off."

He tilted his head back and sprayed another gulp of water into his mouth, then wiped his mouth off on his shoulder, leaving a wet smudge on the fabric of his tshirt. He could appreciate all the work she was putting into herself - a strong woman was a fun woman, in the end. He never did like to feel like he might break a girl. Luckily, the city was full of super heroines these days.

"Besides, gym bunnies usually like those Justin Bieber types. Pretty hair and baby voices and all that." The smirk was back, now. "Most women don't know how to handle a real man these days." It was obviously a hard life.

Ariel's eyebrows lifted as she gave him a look. 'Our members' suggested he worked here, but how he thought that gave him any sort of claim to her, she had no idea. p***k. She was entirely unimpressed.

"The a*****e who gave me these will be singing soprano soon enough. I've been beating up my own douchebags for six years now, Big Boy, I don't need a muscle-bound lunkhead getting in the way." And if her fists didn't work, she had a gun and a taser to fall back on, at least in civilian life. Powered life could use a little more weapon in it... who the ******** thought fake nails were a good weapon should have their d**k ripped off and fed to them, because it was undoubtedly a man.

When he mentioned Justin Bieber, Ariel couldn't suppress her shudder of reaction or her grimace of distaste. UGH, ********> She'd rather be stabbed in the eye with a spoon. Men were useless enough, that was a special kind of horrible. Sucking on her water, the tall woman turned to stride over to the next bag and dropped her water and towel off to the side again.

"Yeah well, if you see a real man, point him out, would you?" She said as she reached out to run her hands down the sides of the bag. "I might actually break my 'no men' rule for one."

Satisfied, Ariel stepped back and whipped her leg up to kick it hard, the solid THWACK sound pleasing to the ears. The bag swung a little as she brought her leg down and punched it, keeping her hands up in a defensive pose. Ugh, now all she could picture was Justin Bieber. Talk about a mood killer.

Kamboja watched her with a wary eye as she gave him yet another dismissive retort and moved down to the next punching bag without so much as a thank you for the advice. This was definitely a challenge - but he was missing a good challenge in his life these days. Civilian conquests were so much easier.

"How do you know I'd get in the way?" He moved down as she did, leaning against the wall between the two punching bags now and staring at her as she arched a leg and nailed the punching bag with more force than any of the little gym bunnies would have. Strong thighs, good balance. If she thought he was giving up now, she was betting on the wrong odds. And what was that no men rule? Oh, he was so intrigued.

"I don't have another gym bunny to train for about an hour, doll, if you want to try your luck against something stronger than a sack of sand." A thick brow arched as he swept his gaze from her leg to her defensive posture. He could take her - and show her a thing or two while he was at it. Real men didn't sing soprano. He pushed his shoulder off of the wall and turned away to look at the gym, twisting in place to stretch out his back.

"Cause you're not gonna get good enough for payback by playing with anything that isn't a challenge."

She could feel him staring at her and it stiffened her spine, her motions taking on a new snap and greater force with an audience to witness it. It was hard to suppress the urge to show off and after some internal argument, she ended up saying <******** it and putting some flash into the Krav Maga strikes she was employing. Let him stare. She knew she was hot and it was entirely the point to make people watch her. Her body was her weapon, as much visually as physically.

How do I know? Because there is a difference between fighting out in the real world and fighting in the gym, Dread-head. There are no rules outside, where no one wears padded gloves and everyone is likely to have a knife on them somewhere.

Being called 'doll' pulled her to a halt finally and Ariel dropped to put her weight on both feet, turning to give him her full, annoyed attention. Tapped hands found the full curves of her hips and her lips curled in a sneer.

"I'm sorry... Doll?" She snapped. "I am no one's toy. ******** surprised me because I underestimated him, not because I'm not good enough to hand him his own a**. I promise, next time, he won't be walking away from me, he'll be crawling. But hey, if you'd like to replace my punching bag, I'm not going to say no."

Ariel spread her hands wide in invitation and stepped away from the bags, shifting to the empty mats and open space. She made no move to put on gloves or any sort of protective gear, lifting her fists up to a defensive position near her face. One foot was set in front of the other, her weight light on the balls of her feet with the stance set wide.

"Just a warning though, I've been doing this for a long time and I hit hard. Its why I use the bags and not another person." You know... beyond that I just don't like other people all that much. And they don't tend to like me much either after I've beaten the s**t out of them once or twice. Ariel had never been terribly good at holding back... what the hell was the point? A bail jumper wasn't going to hold back for her, what good was practicing at less than what she could expect in the real world?

The tall woman watched her new opponent as he stretched out, assessing him for obvious weaknesses and hints at what style he might bring to the match. Boxer? Mixed martial arts? Judo? It was hard to say without seeing him move.

It was hard to hide the smile when she finally turned away from her punching bag and put her full attention on him, though he did his best and controlled it to a sly smirk. Despite the fact that her attention came in the form of an angry outburst, it was still attention and it was still what he wanted. He made a mental note to use pet names in the future.

"Don't worry about me. Even if you aren't a gym bunny, I really doubt you're as hard to handle as some of my usual sparring partners." He had to admit that it was interesting to know that someone looked at him and thought he was easy prey, but he didn't expect this woman to hold a candle to some of the people he'd faced as Gehenna. After all, he'd lived through a woman stabbing him clean through the torso. It wasn't like she could punch that hard.

The dreadhead paused where he was to continue his streching, letting her wait a moment where she'd stepped onto the mat. He'd had the advantage of already seeing what she was capable of and what style she preferred, though he wouldn't dare underestimate a woman with a body like that. He, however, was a complete surprise to her. The only disadvantage he wanted to admit was the way she had already been warmed up - he hadn't. Being someone's trainer wasn't much of a work out.

When he was ready, he stepped onto the mat after her, into closer range than he would have if she were truly an enemy. There was no risk of losing his life in this match up. He set his feet to the width of his shoulders and bent slightly into a defensive position, pulling his fists up level with his chest. He didn't want to outright block his head - by the looks of her, he'd be willing to bet she played dirty. No one with a temper like that was dry enough to play by the books. It was kind of an exciting thought.

"Alright, sweetcheeks, come and get it." He even added a small 'come hither' motion with one hand for effect. He hoped it fueled that temper of hers just a little more.

Oh, that smarmy smile... she wanted to punch him right in those full, smirking lips. Good thing she was going to get a chance to do just that.

What was it with some guys, assuming that because she was a woman, she wouldn't be as effective as having a male partner? Was it just because she was smaller than he was? Not a hard thing to be, when guys like him lifted weights and bulked out, but she far preferred her own lean muscle to his bulk.

"I guess we'll see." Ariel snapped back as she watched him stretch, taking note of his range of motion and how easily he moved. Just a little slow... there will be my advantage. I should think I'll be able to surprise him. She thought as she rolled her shoulders, making sure all stiffness was gone. Her muscles felt warm and pulled easily, perfect for starting out a sparring match.

The stretching out took longer than she would have liked, but at last he was ready, lumbering out onto the mats to take up a stance not unlike her own. Her mouth pulled into a smirk that had far too much teeth in it as he called her 'sweetcheeks' and she ran through a few possible attacks. In the back of her mind, she wondered how much trouble she'd get in for going for a nut-shot... she really didn't want to get thrown out for beating up one of their boys. Ah well... probably safer to stick to blows outside of the groin area, no matter how tempting.

That beckoning hand had barely completed the motion before Ariel rushed the trainer, an open palmed blow sent at his blocking fists to knock them out of alignment with her body and send the heel of the other hand up and into his face. One muscled leg jerked upwards, bare knee aimed for his stomach in concert with the other motions.

Kamboja was used to pretty much everyone being faster than he was - it was the price he paid for having more muscle. Yet he never stopped being surprised at how quickly people could rush at him when everyone else made it seem so easy to predict his own bullheaded stampedes. She was just suddenly in motion, doing more things with her first dash than he could keep track of.

As the hand came out to try and knock his arms out of place, he caught it with one arm and shoved it out to the side. The other arm blocked the hand she drove up at his face but unfortunately, he didn't manage to block the knee she shoved right into his stomach. His legs weren't the most agile tools in his body.

He grunted and leaned forward slightly but fought the urge to double over and protect his stomach. The Squire-by-night had at least learned to recover from inevitable blows quickly. The first arm snaked down and caught her behind the knee of her lifted leg, grabbing tightly and yanking up in an attempt to pull her clean off of her feet. One sneaker shoved out and kicked at the foot of her standing leg, hoping he could disorient her enough to land her flat on her back.

The hand at his arms was blocked, but no matter... it had been preventative to getting punched when she was in close, so having it swept away changed little. The blow to the face being blocked was more troublesome, but in the end, she had expected him to block either that or her knee, and it was her knee that managed to thump hard into his stomach.

The problem came when he reacted by grabbing her leg and turning the fight into a grapple. It was a bit annoying... Schörl had used the same defense on her. It limited her mobility, cut her speed... and put her at a disadvantage as she was forced to pit her own strength against his, which was obviously greater. He demonstrated that easily as he went to pull her off her feet, something she would have been hard pressed to copy if the roles had been reversed. Ariel was ready for it though, and used that slight bend forward to throw herself into his shoulder and wrap one thick arm around his neck. Thus secured, she threw her weight backwards this time and lifted her leg up as he tried to kick it out from under her, wrapping it around the back of his knee on that side.

Time to see how hard your head is when we both land on it, Big Boy.

"Already trying to get me on my back?" She grated at him through her teeth, her lips drawn into a wide smile. "Haven't even bought me dinner yet..."

At least he didn't use pressure points on her... that had been extremely annoying. Someday, she was going to have to learn those techniques for herself and surprise Schörl with it.

Fortunately, Kamboja's greatest asset in any battle was being a large, heavy man with a lot of dense muscle mass. It was hard to toss him around against his will, almost as successful as moving a brick wall. Though she succeeded in throwing off his center of gravity with the unexpected climb up his torso, she didn't have the weight behind her to drag him down quickly enough to stop a counter.

As he began to feel himself tipping forward, he secured his free hand around her waist to hold her still and rolled his left shoulder forward to let them fall onto that side. Though he didn't have the pauldron in his civilian life, learning to use it to his advantage had changed the way he fought overall. It brought them down onto his left side, undoubtedly knocking hers as well, and pinned the leg she had wrapped around his knee beneath his weight. He grimaced from the impact on his shoulder, but a lot of the force had been absorbed by the training mat.

"That's where I like my women," he answered through a grunt, though lacking its usual smarm with the way she was had tightened her arm around his neck and locked his head into place.

He kept his weight on her trapped leg and used the arm hooked beneath the other knee to shove it upward, stretching out that leg and pinning it in what had to be a painful position. He had the advantage of weight in a hold like that, but he had to wonder if she was crafty enough to get out of it.

The contact with the floor pulled a grunt out of Ariel and a throb of pain as they landed on her leg, her lips pulled back from her teeth in a grimace.

"Too bad." She said as he stretched her leg upwards, forcing them as far apart as they would go. "I like to be on top." The way her legs were spread wide around him was not lost on her, but she was more concerned right now with the fact they were tangled together on the floor, which put her at a great disadvantage. He had weight and strength on his side, her speed no help at all when he had a hold of her. She needed to break free... wrestling around with him was guaranteed to end with her losing.

Releasing his neck, Ariel hauled her arm back and sent her elbow into the back of his head, hissing as pain lanced up her forearm. Grabbing for his head, she set one hand to the back of his skull and the other beside his nose, pushing and twisting him to force a roll onto his back with the direction of the twist... at least if he didn't want her to break his nose or something. She followed it with a shove of her body to encourage the roll and ride it.

God damn, her knee was going to hurt tomorrow... she was going to need to ice it. The damn thing was getting worse as time went on and she was not pleased with it.

A loud groan passed through his lips as soon as the elbow sank against his skull. Though it was cushioned partially by the thick dreads, it didn't save him from the jab entirely, and it sent stars sparkling across his vision despite the extra cushion. <********," was the only intelligible thing he could respond with, though 'intelligible' was arguable. It took relatively little convincing to force him to roll over and pull his weight off of her leg, not with the threat of a broken nose and his vision still swimming static gray. Yet even as he did so, he became aware of the fact that she was not only straddling him now, but the way she was grabbing his head had forced her to lean forward - not entirely a bad view from his perspective.

"If you wanted to be on top, all you had to do was say so." The smart a** comment rolled off his tongue as he reached up to grab both of her arms in his strong hands, incapable of throwing her off from this position but trying to limit any damage she could do with her hands by locking them in place.

"See? Much better." Ariel laughed as he grabbed her arms, pleased she had managed to pin him on his back. She didn't even mind so much that he had hold of her now... he should have tried to punch her rather than grapple, but he chose to play defensive. Got you on the ropes, boy?

Shifting, the tall woman pulled a knee up and planted it on his stomach, using her own body weight to drive it into him. He might have a nice, cut six-pack, but that was not going to help him much. A grin pulled at her lips as Ariel leaned down over him, her voice sultry and teasing, though there was an edge to it.

"Say Uncle and I'll let you up." She purred, her asymmetrical fringe of black hair just barely brushing the side of his cheek. Unless he had some sort of clever trick up his nonexistent sleeves, she was pretty sure he was going to have to release her arms to get her off, which meant she'd have a nice opportunity to punch him right in the face... so whatever he chose, it was a win win for her.

At least this little tussle had improved her mood. A good fight always seemed to do that, whether it was versus an enemy or someone else. Her muscles burned pleasantly, endorphins flooded her system and all was right with the world because she had put it in its place.
