xxThe trip was long, and by now the young seventeen turn old teenager was absolutely sick of being filthy and dirty. But as she entered into the small hold where she'd catch a ride over to Benden Weyr, her heart was filled with excitement and admittedly, fear. She was about to be up high, as in incredibly high. The girl had few fears, but heights was one thing she could hardly come close to accepting. And as she set her bags down to await the rider who'd take her to the weyr, excitement pulsated in a river of emotions. What if I like it there too much? What if something happens with father? These thoughts brought her emotions to a grinding halt.

xxShould she leave to Benden Weyr? A master tanner was waiting for her there, but also, the seemingly endless beginnings of dragons. She'd already fallen in love with the high aerial stunts she'd seen on her way over to this hold, the way the dragon's scales charmingly danced in the bright sunlight. Was it possible? I wonder if I have the makings of a rider? She thought to herself, and then her name was called. It was finally going to be her shot! Ignoring her thoughts, she snatched up her bag and raced to the rider, excitement pulsating through her. I'm going to fly!
                                                                          x
                                                                          x
                                                                          x

xxShe had never been so off by being on the ground. But the rider had made her journey exceedingly comfortable, maintaining a low speed and steering close to the ground so she didn't get scared. Though, Kalendol felt a tad out of place. She wished the rider had gone higher. Now, though, blinking in the bright sunlight, she gazed longingly up at the dragons flying through the air. So this is Benden Weyr. Kalendol thought with a small smile. It wasn't even close to the picture she'd been expecting. But, although it was a nice weyr, she was rather discouraged. She didn't know where to even begin. First things first, to find my master. As she walked along the dusty walkways, she heard a group of three people speaking. A clutch? That's a grouping of dragon eggs, right? She thought.

xxKalendol pretended to be admiring something so that she could eavesdrop in secret, So, riders are looking for candidates for the next clutching? I wonder if... She broke off with a shake of her head, having to jump out of the way for a particularly irritating looking wher to pass by her. Oh it's so cute! She squeaked inwardly and then shook her head. I wonder... could I be a good candidate? As the group walked away, so too did Kalendol, frowning, her tattered cloak drawn around her body tightly. She listened to the pounding of her worn boots on the surface of the ground.

xxWouldn't that be something? Me, a rider! Kalendol had lost herself in her musings, and suddenly, she had found herself incredibly, impossibly, lost within Benden Weyr. Fiddlesticks.

It looked lonely in here.

Vesresh was doing chores when he saw the newcomer. There were a lot of newcomers today, and yesterday, and it scared him a little. What scared him more, though, was that he was a candidate now, old enough to stand in a clutch, old enough to be let out of the familiar walls of the creche and into the tasks set for a candidate.

He didn't mind the tasks. He minded the people. Everybody, it seemed, was older and tougher than he was, and he was constantly reminded that he – Vesresh – was Weyrbred, and not a wherholder. Well, technically he was... he just didn't feel very wherholder...y. His sisters, though, were strong. They fit in well.

Why he wasn't with them, he didn't know.

The newcomer was a girl, many turns his senior and about the age of his sisters. She was pretty, he thought, dressed in leather with some skin showing at her middle.

It seemed that Vesresh had been given a quiet place to clean, so – being the only one there at the time – he gave her a little wave and a shy smile... though his heart raced. He was not comfortable with strangers, but it was the nice thing to do...

You're now my favorite next to Tawny because I simply adore Tawny.

The girl looked to her left to see a boy looking towards her. She smiled at his wave and slowly, almost as though she could be doing other things she approached him. "Hello. I'm Kalendol, would you mind telling me the way to the t--" She hesitated, if I ask him direction to the master tanner's shop, I may never get to become a candidate. She frowned and then Kalendol tilted her head, "Are you a candidate?" She asked brightly, opting to change the topic. Kalendol had heard that candidate's had chores to do, how horrid. But nothing she wasn't used to she was sure. Unless it had a lot more to do with dragons and such. That would be befitting but also quite tedious. Kalendol tilted her head instead with a small grin.

Tawny is wonderful

Oh shards the pretty girl was coming up to him! He somehow managed to blush and blanch at the same time, a reaction that left him feeling merely confused.

“Oh, I'm... Vesresh.” he said, fidgeting with his cleaning supplies nervously. He really, really, really wanted to try drawing her hair – a very odd, out of place thought that had him even more confused. “And uh... yes. As of a few months ago. Yes.” Blushing won out, with a side of fear: Shards... he was talking to her. What if she was a wherhandler? What if she was that Masterhandler Keller fellow in disguise? What if she was a wher in disguise?

No, she's too pretty. he admonished himself and his fanciful imagination.

“Do you... are you... here for the clutch?” he asked, his voice quieting to a mild squeak.

agreed.

The girl smiled slowly, is he embarrassed? She wondered but didn't say anything on it, instead Kalendol flashed one of her signature smiles, and then pushed her hat up out of her face. Her hazel eyes studied him a moment and then she grinned once more, "Vesresh. That's wonderful." She was sorely out of place here in Benden, with her speech. But it wasn't her fault. Not really. The seventeen turn old blinked her eyes and shook her head softly to clear her own thoughts, causing a strand of curly auburn to fall from her hat.

"The clutch? Well... yes and no." Kalendol smiled and then laughed behind her gloved hand. "I am here to finish learning my craft, but, I heard of the clutch and got curious. Y'know? The idea of soaring through the air, it's an intense notion." She smiled kindly, and nodded her head. Yeah, Kalendol wanted wings.

His name was wonderful?!

Aaaaah! he silently squealed, wishing his sisters were here to just... be there.

They'd probably laugh at me he thought, watching her hair as it fell. It was nice hair... why hadn't he brought his sketchbook with him?

“It... Isn't it?” he said, flustered. so she was a candidate. If she wanted to fly, she'd have to be. That made sense.

Stop stammering and ask her where shes trying to go. Maybe you can help her instead of acting like a dimglow... he thought.

The twelve-turn old tried to make himself seem less like he was panicking over a pretty face. “Did you need me to um... show you where to go?” he asked, fidgeting further with his cleaning supplies.

Suddenly, her face lit up and her hazel eyes grew a little misty, "Oh would you please? I'm trying to find the place to sign up to stand for the Hatching, but I can't figure my way around here. It's so much larger than the hold I come from!" Kalendol gasped in relief, her lips parting to release a suppressed sigh. "I'd be greatly indebted if you could assist me." Ah, just a country girl, lost in the big city. Jeez.

“Of... of course!” Vesresh said hurriedly. He left the cleaning supplies– he likely to make it back to this part of the Weyr in time to finish it.

He was bringing a new candidate to the candidatemaster, so maybe he could be excused for taking a break. He hoped. “This way.” he said, beckoning.

As he started walking, he could feel the silence pressing in on him. “Um... so the person you need to speak to is the candidatemaster... whoever's on duty. They do... these things.” he said, “They arrange the bunks, the classes, the... stuff.”

He couldn't think of anything else to say, really, save for one thing. “S-so.” he began awkwardly, “You're from a hold?”

As they walked she couldn't help but noticing how hurriedly he spoke. He must be in a hurry to get back to chores. I didn't know that was possible. She thought with a small giggle and then her hazel eyes flashed towards him as he asked a more personal question. Kalendol nodded her head, "Aye, a hold out near Malvren to be honest. Quite a long sevenday to get here indeed." Kale laughed and shook her head, looking towards the boy. "How long have you been in Benden?" She asked with a smile, not really knowing he was a Weyr brat.

“So... whats it like? In a hold?” he asked. He felt shyer – which was apparently possible – for admitting it, but... “I'm from here.” he said, “Lived here all my life. I've never left.” he fidgeted again, wishing he had his sketchpad so that he could doodle a little as they walked – something less obviously nervous. “So I've never seen a Hold...”

Kalendol had to think on this one, it wasn't too troublesome, though it was kind of small in her eyes. "My hold was relatively small, we didn't have a lot of people around. There weren't many kids when I was younger. And there were definitely no dragons or whers." She smiled slowly. "Oftentimes you wouldn't see a flit either unless they were nesting nearby, one time my brother, he is quite a dimglow, tried to steal a flit's eggs. He wound up getting nibbled on a little too much and fell on one of the eggs. It was very bad." She chuckled. Kalendol really didn't know how to describe her brothers. "I'm the youngest of six children, my elder brothers are much older than I am, and have all grown out of being able to stand. Though, they each tried and were sent home quite disappointed." She smiled. The red-head didn't mind sharing this information with the younger boy. Blinking her eyes she held her arms up above her head, stretching slowly.

As he spoke of being originally from this weyr she nodded, it made a certain sort of sense. "Well, I can gather that. You sound like you're from here." She grinned a little. The girl wasn't much for putting things off. "Was it fun growing up in the weyr? Or, was there a lot to get in the way?" She watched him out of the corner of her eyes as they walked together to the candidatemaster. I'm so nervous my heart is racing within my chest! Shards, I hope this goes easier. She thought inwardly. "I bet you've learned all the best places to hide and relax, eh?" Kalendol smiled. She knew all the best places in her hold, and had once taken her youngest brother there, but he'd told all the others and she was unable to play there anymore without one of them.

Jameson huffed as he carried a mop over his shoulder and a bucket in his hand. This was boring. Why would he be assigned this? He thought Candidates would get more freedom to be around the dragons or even the Whers, but clean-up duty?

At least at home in Malvren, he had friends, few though they were, to hang out with and have a little fun with. Or at least have his alone time on the coast. There wasn't much to see here. He had never seen Benden before the revolution. So this "new" Benden was... Not much to look at by his eyes.

He grumbled and found himself almost running into some kid and a girl in a tattered cloak," Watch it!" He growled. He was already in a foul mood but he didn't want to end up running into someone and getting soapy water all over him and them. He glared at them then noticed he had seen the boy before. He was there when Jameson arrived. "You're a candidate right?" He asked pointing to the boy. "How did you get out of doing chores?" He asked noticing the boy didn't have any sort of cleaning supplies with him. If he got of chores, then Jameson wanted to know how too.

She'd been so distracted by her talking with the younger boy that when another candidate nearly ran into her she let out a squawk of surprise and then clenched her fists when the dimglow dared to tell them to watch it. "Why don't you watch it, you're the one who wasn't paying attention." She snapped in return back at the boy, her eyes flashing with anger. How could someone be so rude? The girl lifted her chin as not only did he growl at her, but he completely ignored her being there.

Jumping to the twelve turn old's defense, the girl huffed, "He didn't get out of chores, but he's taking me to the candidatemaster. I'm new here. From a hold near Malvren. I'm here for the clutch." Kalendol stated, crossing her arms and glaring at the other candidate. But as she glared she noticed a few quite intriguing traits about the other candidate. He was quite attractive, if only his disposition and attitude were likewise attractive. But clearly they were not. Snorting in irritation, she tossed her head a little, lifting her chin more, and pulling her tattered cloak around her body tighter. Men. She thought with a shake of her head, allowing more of her auburn curls to fall free from her cap.
