...Malta was still quiet when she stepped into her lair, Reegel trailing lazily behind. “Hey.” he said, lying down languidly near the entrance to the musty burrow, “I bet you're wondering...” he let the comment trail off, inviting her to answer.

Malta felt like ignoring him. She huffed at the musty herb-and-steam filled air of her lair and wanted to ignore him. He had called her strange and called out her tendency to apologize for nothing and she was not happy about it. In fact, she resented it. It was worse yet because it was true; she was strange and she did apologize for nothing.

But ignoring someone and being intentionally rude was against her nature (unintentional rudeness happened all of the time, to her great dismay) and so, though there was a significant silence (where she tried her best to be rude), she spoke.

“Wondering... what?” she asked, not looking at him. She pretended, instead, to nose around her herbs.

“Why I'm awake. In the day.”

“Oh.” Truth be told, she hadn't. “... why are you awake in the day?” she asked, knowing that he was likely not going to let go of it. At least she thought, He's being nice... But Reegel was often nice, or at least of the nicer portion of the tribe.

“To keep an eye on you, of course!” he said, “Elder's orders. We're to watch you even in the day, just for safety, you know? They're thinking of letting you go out and gather again soon.”

“Oh. Thats good.” A skittering in her herbs caught her attention, and she saw – to her delight – a little bouken peer cautiously out from between thin pages of dried leaves. She nudged a few pieces of dried fruit over to it's twitching nose, hopeful that it would stay...

(99 = ohhhh one more thing more and she woulda gotten a +10!!! = success)
    (Rolling for training)

The bouken sniffed her offering and her nose and decided to take its chances, scurrying out to pick up the dried fruit and stuff it into its little cheeks. Hello there... she thought, nudging a few seeds over to it as well, watching to see if it would take those too.

“Just good?!” exclaimed Reegel, “Just?! I would think you would be ecstatic! With the way you're always wandering around looking for plants? You can't be happy all cooped up in the lairs!”

“I'm not.” she said quietly, “I just... don't know.”

“I think I get it.” he said. Malta heard him stand up. “You think it might make the others hate you, don't you? Because they're grumpy and all?”

The bouken accepted the offer of seeds and became braver. Malta offered it a small piece of crystallized honey, the sugar tickling her nose with its sweet floral scent. She liked sugar herself, and she hoped the bouken would, as well.

“No need to worry about the likes of Vorkin and Kumog getting any grumpier. I said I'd volunteer for all daylight shifts.” She glanced back to see him grinning, obviously very pleased with himself. Her suspicions of his pride were confirmed. “... Nadra was very pleased with my bravery.”

“Ah. Nadra.” of course. He still wanted to impress that female friend of his. Normally, she would be all helpful and curious about how that was going, but she was not in a good mood just now. Though, the bouken was helping. It was fully out of its shelter now, sleek and black and energetic, licking the sugar off its whiskers.

“Yeah, Nadra and...” Suddenly, Malta realized that Reegel was right next to her – he had been silent in his approach. “What is that...?” he asked, “Malta, what are you doing?”

    (86 = successful train!)

Malta unfurled her wings protectively. “It's a bouken, Reegel.” she said matter of factly, nudging another sugar crystal to it.

“I can see that... What are you doing with it?” asked her cousin, his voice neutrally incredulous, “Are you... feeding it?”

“Yes. I'm feeding it.” Malta retorted, her mood growing more sour with every word he said, “Is there a problem.”

“No...” he drew back, shaking his head, “No, I guess not.” his voice was perplexed, definitely surprised, “I mean... why are you feeding it?” He sat back on his haunches, regarding Malta curiously. “Are you fattening it up for a snack or... what?”

“What?!” she turned on him, earfins back against her head in affront, her wings bristling and raised, “How could you say that?! No! I'm not fattening it up!”

“You know...” he said, giving her a slightly baffled khehoran smirk, “You normally eat bouken. They are prey. You know this right?”

“Yes... no!” she bared her teeth, “You can't eat it! I'm not eating it! It's not a snack!” she insisted frantically but firmly. Her tail began to lash and she could feel, slowly building, the bitter taste of her toxin. That stopped her short.

What? she thought, confused, What in the shadows name...? was she... angry?

“All right, all right.” he said, laughing, tipping his wings in an agreeable way, “Hold your hastars, as the magescans say. I was just saying.”

Slowly, she felt the venom recede and sat back on her haunches, feeling confused, embarrassed, and more than a little upset – with both him and herself. “I'm sorry...” she said, looking away.

“Nothing to apologize about.” said Reegel, amused, “So. What are you going to do with the little critter?”

“I'm...” she stopped, looking at the bouken. It looked back at her. What was she going to do with it? “Well, it lives here anyway... so, I'm going to feed it so it stays.” she nodded, mostly to herself, “I think.”

“You're keeping it as a pet.” said Reegel, incredulously, “You're seriously keeping it as a pet.” he shook his head again, watching as the bouken sniffed Maltas nose, expectant of another treat. “You really are a strange khehora.”
