She's bundled up in a pink Hello Kitty coat, complete with furry hood and ears. Their breath mists and mingles in the frozen air and all around is landscape of snow, vast and pristine in the morning light. She turns to offer a chagrined smile, cheeks and nose rosy with cold. "Shoulda brought hot chocolate with us instead of saying the treat for after," Clarice admitted ruefully.

He's wearing a dark gray peacoat that falls nearly to his knees, a slate blue scarf wrapped around his neck to keep himself warm. His gloved hands are in front of him, and he keeps rubbing them together to generate heat in the chilly air.
"That probably would have been a good idea," said Gale, with a little laugh. He pushed his blonde hair out of his eyes and glanced around. "I don't see a good tree that's small enough yet, do you?"

"If we can't find one, we'll make one." Clarice was great at cutting large things apart. The temperature seemed to drop, just slightly, barely enough to notice. In response, Clarice stomped a bit harder in the snow than she should have, and her foot sunk a lot further than was ideal. The blonde tumbled down into the snow with a startled cry that quickly turned into laughter. Turning over on her back, she just laid there staring at the almost painfully clear blue of the sky. "I meant to do that," she insisted. And then, as if to prove the point, began to starfish in the snow to make an angel.

He felt peculiar, somehow, but Gale brushed that aside. He gave a small snort and shook his head, rubbing his hands together again to try and generate a little bit more heat between them. "With that weapon of yours, I'm sure you'd be good at that," he said dryly.
She had fallen down, her blonde hair flying, and Gale gave a little laugh as he stood above her, his breath clearly visible in the chill air.
"Sure, sure," he said, and then, after a moment's hesitation, dropped down into the icy snow beside Clarice, wincing slightly at the cold that seemed to seep into him almost instantly. Shivering slightly, Gale spread his arms out wide on either side of him.
"This isn't helping us on our quest for the perfect tree," he pointed out, but he was already starting to mimic her, moving his arms up and down in the freezing snow.

"It's to help us get into the moment," Clarice laughed then fell into a thoughtful quiet. "Julie," she finally continued, "loved making snow angels." Another pause, as she stilled and simply went back to staring at the sky. Clouds began to edge across the horizon. "I wish I could have helped her, in the end. She didn't deserve that."

"Sorry I'm late!" It was obvious he had left in a rush, and was just haphazardly stuffing his scarf back into his coat, puffed up the wrong way so it looked like he had gained a little bit of extra weight, or just had developed a rather sizeable chest. One end of the scarf was still sticking out from his from the collar, the other half-covering his jacket, so it looked more like one scythe instead of two marking his division.
He paused, and took a moment to catch his breath in the biting snow, face all red, like his hair. "You guys didn't get to the fun part without me did you?"

Julie.
He felt strangely that he hadn't heard of that name in quite some time. Gale's eyes were drawn upwards to the sky, like Clarice, and he lifted a hand to shade his gaze, squinting in the brightness of the blue that stretched out above them.
"No," he said quietly. "No, she didn't."
Footsteps, and the small spray of snow onto Gale's face from skidding feet, announced the arrival of someone else; a gasping, laughing voice and the brief flash of red interrupting the blue. Gale pushed himself up onto his elbows in the snow, white flakes dripping from the ends of his blonde hair, and could just make out the haphazard, hastily dressed form of the person next to them.
Gale's chest seemed to constrict a little; a strange sensation he couldn't quite identify. He felt oddly ill at ease, but pushed it aside, pushed it down, out of sight, out of mind.
"Unless you count not finding a good tree, then no, not yet," said Gale with a laugh. "Come join us, Ben."

For a moment, Clarice's expression froze and her darkened into something terrible. Something ancient and angry. And then she was throwing a snowball, hard, at Ben's head and scrambling out of the snow while laughing, "You're late!" She barreled into him, throwing both arms around the man, pulling him in for a kiss that looked like something out of a movie from where Gale was sitting, but involved many more teeth than two human mouths should contain.

The moment was brief, it was disconcerting, and then over. Ben squeezed Clarice in a tight hug. He wrapped his scarf around her, in a loose circle. The scarf was surprisingly long. It was almost cute.
"Gale," he began, warningly. "You know I don't celebrate holidays like that, but I'll play along. Giftmas right?" He winked, good naturedly, entirely joking "speaking of Giftmas, what can old Santa Ben get you this year?"

He thought he saw -
- but no, it was a trick of the light, and the next thing he knew, Clarice had flung herself into Ben's arms and kissed him. Gale's face flushed a deep red and he averted his eyes; their obvious displays of affection were sweet, and for a moment he was wistful, almost longing -
- a strange, uneasy feeling swept over him, sending shivers rippling up and down his spine. He blinked rapidly, bemused, and then turned his head back to the other two, Ben and Clarice looking very couple-y in the snow, scarves bright and cheeks flushed.
"Okay, okay," said Gale, a grin tugging at his lips. He sat up straighter and brushed snow from his bangs. "I dunno, er..."
He thought for a moment, and then said lightly, jokingly, with laughter in his voice, "I could always do with a better job."

Clarice's hands picked at a loose strand of yarn and within moments it was partially unraveled as she reached for him. For a moment it seemed she was going to hug him again, but instead the blonde was leveraging Ben over her hip into a snow bank. Playfully shoving his face in the snow Clarice laughed and winked at Gale. "You could always transfer to my division. You're capable of do much more than he gives you credit for."

It took him a little longer for him to get out of the snow, and then he was shaking his head playfully, like a dog vying for a little too much attention.
"I think Gale's old enough to make his own choices," he laughed, and simply sat from his position on the snow, the scarf discarded on the ground, still oddly slowly unraveling. "Sometimes you can't choose what you feel like, you have to choose what is right. Happiness must be sacrificed for something greater."
As he looked at Gale, for a moment his form blurred, and there was no longer Clarice and Ben but instead a long white room and in the center were two-
- "So," he interrupted, "about that Giftmas gift. How does a tricycle sound?"

Gale could not help the tiny flush of pleasure that crossed his cheeks at the compliment. In spite of all his bravado, hearing that someone else thought him capable than Caelius ever would was immensely reassuring. Plus, Clarice was currently shoving Ben's face into the snow, so there was that amusement as well.
He wasn't looking at the scarf.
Gale ran a hand through his snow-dampened hair and gave Ben an odd look. It was a strangely serious thought for a time that was meant to be fun and playful. He opened his mouth to say something, but the scene in front of him changed, just for a second, and it was like the picture on the screen was fuzzy, fading in and out.
(A table -)
And then it was back again.
(There was no table. There was Clarice and Ben, his two friends.)
Gale scowled in mock offense. "Only if you give yourself a unicycle."

"You're right, he is," Clarice agreed warmly, eyes bright with fond affection. "But people have skill and talent for a reason, how is wasting that potential on an uncaring authority a worthy sacrifice?" She then shoved a snowball down the collar of his shirt, "Gotcha!" Blink: a heroic figure, frozen within crystal that was already beginning to form cracks. Blink: Clarice, grinning, tries to do the same to Gale, but trips and falls instead, foot tangled in the scarf. With a laugh, she adds, "If you do, I'll add some tech to it and make things really interesting." Clarice was always doing those things, trying to make things better with her skills. Even if it backfired, her intentions were good, were meant to help the people she cared about, and that was all that mattered.

He felt a strange sense of nostalgia, as though he was missing something - or maybe, someone, but he didn't quite understand it. Gale ran a hand through his hair, dislodging some of the snow that still clung to the blonde locks.
He blinked. She was gone. He blinked again. She was back, and he was scrambling to get out of her reach, except it wasn't necessary, because Clarice got herself tangled into the scarf and collapsed to the ground, laughing. Gale plunked himself beside her in the snow, cheeks red from the cold, slightly breathless.
"Good, get him a unicycle with some interesting tech things added," he said with a wink in Ben's direction. "As for me, well..." A pause, as he considered. "I'm good with just some happiness, for once, y'know? Just a good day all around where I don't have to worry about anything sounds bloody brilliant."
A pause.
"A day without Caelius getting his panties in a twist at anyone would be pretty awesome too. Or maybe a puppy."
