There had been something weighing on Mitsu's mind ever since the day they visited Freya and Kettil's new little scareling. She knew that Shun wasn't excited about scarelings like she was but she was beginning to wonder what his thoughts were. Mitsu had always imagined a life with at least some children but now she was wondering if that was going to be nothing more than a dream. Shun had so many reservations about the idea but Mitsu knew he couldn't see himself the way she saw him.
To put her mind at rest she decided to talk to her reaper about it. She wouldn't get any answers just thinking it over herself. Besides he couldn't be completely against the idea, right? Surely.
Peeking her head into the spare bedroom where Shun liked to keep a fair amount of his extra things she tried to gauge if he was busy or not. "Hey, what are you up to?"

Shun sat at a desk with several blades laid out onto the surface. He had a rag and some oil, along with a whetstone. When he heard the door open up, he glanced on over his shoulder. His good eye softened at the sight of Mitsu hovering by the doorway.
"Just maintaining my blades. Do you need something?" he quietly asked while turning around more fully.

"Hmm, yes and no I guess." Mitsu said softly moving into the room and coming to stand beside Shun's desk looking over the random knives that sat there. "I was hoping we could talk for a bit. I wanted to ask you something."
Now that she had her chance to talk to him Mitsu was feeling a little nervous about the subject. To be more accurate she was afraid of the answer but she pressed on.
"Shun, have you ever given any thought to us expanding our family? Not now, but in the future." She assured.

At that, Shun went ahead and set the knife he held down so that he could have his attention fully on Mitsu. He wasn't really sure what it was she had in mind, but he had a feeling it was something fairly serious. The actual question that came to him was a surprise.
For a moment or so, he regarded her silently.
"I have not," he stated, after awhile.

Well, that had certainly been a direct answer but not quite what Mitsu was aiming for. There was another pause as she thought over her next question carefully, fiddling with her ponytail as she thought. A habit she had managed to pick up when her hair had grown out again.
"I was hoping to know how you felt about it. Having a scareling of our own one day."

He kept his gaze on her, watching her carefully. Shun's brow furrowed slightly as he spoke, "I think you already know the answer to that."

Now she was getting a little frustrated but Mitsu tried not to let it show. Instead she took in a slow breath before continuing, collecting her thoughts as she went. "I know you have concerns, Shun. Scarelings aren't a simple decision but I just..." She struggled to find the right word or the right way to phrase what she wanted to say. This situation was delicate and she imagined the wrong thing could make it all come crashing down.
"I just want to know that it's not completely outside the realm of possibility." She looked to Shun, focusing on his good eye, her expression a mix of fear and hope.

"Nothing is impossible. But that, in particular, is fairly improbable," Shun stated. He closed his good eye and let out a sigh, "I don't think I'll be changing my mind on the matter any time soon."

Mitsu nearly flinched at his answer, her mouth pulling into a tight line as she tried to think carefully over what she wanted to say. While her one hand continued to tug at her ponytail that lay over her shoulder her other arm wrapped around her middle in a defensive position.
"So I don't get a say at all?" She asked quietly unable to keep the sadness from her tone. "I don't...really understand why you are so against it." Mitsu knew his reason but that didn't make her understand it any better. People were able to grow, learn and change and that included people their age or older. She could see the potential in Shun to be kind and caring. Sure he could just as easily be strict and demanding but parenting was a learning process as well. No one went into it knowing everything.

"That isn't what I said," Shun replied, furrowing his brow, "You wanted to know how I felt on the matter... and I've given that much."
Another sigh escaped him, and he shook his head.
"I wouldn't be a good father. I'm barely a good person as it is. I'd probably end up dissipating the child. Worse yet, they'd end up like me."

"But how do you know?" Mitsu asked, doing her best not to sound too demanding. "You could be right about being a bad father or you could be wrong. The future isn't set in stone and I know you don't think you are a good person but you are good to those who matter to you." And really to Mitsu that's all she could ask for.
"Shun," She said his name with a quiet patience, unwrapping her arm from around her waist so that she could touch his shoulder. "Don't think so low of yourself. I love you for who you are."

Shun ran a hand through his hair before casting his gaze downward.
"Because I know what I'm like. Even the two students I'm training end up a little cut up after various sessions," he stated. It was nowhere near the level of what he had gone through personally, but it was still something to be said.
He glanced to the hand on his shoulder, then placed his over hers.

The fact that he touched her hand was comforting and it gave her the strength to keep going. "I think we all have had our fair share of cuts and bruises. I don't know that you can make it out of childhood with at least a few scars to tell stories about." Though Mitsu had her fair share that she had no idea where they came from.
"Let me ask you something else." She knelt down now so that she could look up into his gaze, her eyes focused on his good one. "Do you love me Shun?" She waited patiently for his answer before she continued. "Do you care about what happens to me? You've taken care of me when I was sick, would you do it again? Would you protect me?" She smiled a little at her next question. "Would you humor me again if I asked you to do a silly dance with me?" She waited patiently for all his answers if anything were given. Mitsu wanted to give him something to think about.

She did have a point, but Shun had his doubts that most people had as many scars as he did when it came to that. When the topic shifted a bit, he furrowed his brow, looking back up to meet her gaze.
"Yes... of course," he started before hesitating at that last question, "...And maybe for that last one."

She giggled a little but nodded. "Alright I will give you that one. But Shun all those qualities are what make you a good person to me. They are what make me believe you would be a good father. A cold and uncaring person wouldn't love me or taken care of me. Nor would they try to protect me when it mattered. They would have just left me to fend for myself. You would do all these things for me and you can't even picture doing them for a scareling? Not just any scareling but our scareling."
She gave him time to take that in, placing her hands on his leg. "I'm not asking to have a scareling today or even tomorrow or even next year. But someday in the future I want you to be able to see what we can create together. Because I know that you would love them, take care of them, and protect them with all your strength and that's all that matters." She smiled again. "And play games from time to time but we'd work on that."
