IC Even during a war, with all its death and destruction, new life was always struggling to grow. New plants were already beginning to cover up and mask where war had once been so obvious. It was on the calm and serene days like this that one could almost forget there were soldiers at their front door waiting for the perfect chance to strike.
The woman whose healing abilities had left her in charge of those of the sick and wounded from the war was also heavily pregnant at this time. Checking their stores, it would seem that they were low on the healing herbs that would be needed if there was to be another attack.
In need of assistance, this woman chose Finnley to accompany her to gather and learn about the necessary herbs they would need for healing.
Quest Tasks || Finnley has been chosen to help gather herbs in the area of Jauhar. || The pregnant woman would be happy to show Finnley the plants and herbs, as well explain anything she wants to learn about them. || While out, the older woman will start having contractions and eventually go into labor. || Unfortunately they had strayed too far from town for Finnley to go and get help. || Following the woman's instructions, Finnley will have to deliver the baby herself. || The mother will survive the delivery, but the baby will suffer a few minor complications.

S O L O........P A R T........O N E T H E....G A T H E R I N G 1,151 words Things around the camp had been quiet of late, soldiers were healing and continuing to train. The ravaged land was healing, though much slower than its inhabitants. But slowly and surely, new life was emerging from the burnt and well-traveled lands where the battle had taken place. Signs of the Oban's presence weren't going unnoticed. Trees were being cut down in their area alerting Tendajians of the Oban’s location. But the forests of Jauhar were not one to just lie down and take it. It seemed to redouble its growing efforts in front of the Oban front as if it was saying, "Go no further intruders." The trees were growing thicker, more vines and poisonous fungi were growing near the Obans. Finnley was glad to see the forest healing itself. So much of what they got came from the forest. It was especially important in her field of choice since most of what they used in healing came directly from the forest. It provided for them and took care of them, so Finnley thought they ought to do the same for it, even though it wasn’t always so easy. That was one of the reasons she was glad that the people of Tendaji were banding together to fight off the intruders, to protect the land that gave them so much. The horror of the battle did not escape Finnley’s memory nor did the aftermath of it. The need to help was what held her in the battle camp. There were responsibilities that came with that, but Finnley was okay with that.
Taking up rotations in the healing tents once more, she entered the tent to where the leader of the healers was currently in. Adiralette was a very kind and sweet woman. She cared for everyone who entered her tents and had taken a special interest in Finnley for whatever reason. Maybe it was Namora’s teachings that had helped her gain an inch of knowledge of the healing arts. Without Namora and Ime, Finnley didn’t know if she could be where she was right now. In any case, she was glad that Adira had seen something in her and had taken her under her wing to help her learn the small things that needed to be learned. Today they would be going out to gather supplies and replenish their stock. The heavily pregnant woman carried a staff to lean upon as they made their way out of the tent and into the forests of Jauhar. Finnley worried about her mentor, she pushed herself too much to try and help out everyone else and lead the healers with everything they needed help with. She watched worriedly as her mentor hobbled ahead of her into the forests so they could do some gathering. They had gone a good ways when Adira sat down on a stump and set their basket next to her.”Finnley, dear, go find me an herb you would use on a cut.” Her mentor sent her off to test her. Finnley left her mentor sitting where she was and traveled off into the forest but made sure not to stray too far. Finding a flat leaf on a tall plant that had yellow flowers, she recalled Namora showing her and Ime this plant that was useful for cuts as long as they weren’t too deep. What was it called?...chriathe? yes that was it. Finnley remembered. Picking a few leaves, as well as the flowers which were used in teas to sooth insomnia, she made her way back to where Adira was sitting down on a stump with their basket next to her. They had made sure to bring a big enough basket to bring plenty of supplies back. Not only was it important that they replenish their stores, but this was a big learning opportunity for Finnley. Aidralette was respected by many, and it meant so much to Finn that such an important person would take interest in her.
”Miss Adira. These l-leaves are used in shallow cuts and the fl-flowers off the same Chr-chriathe plant are used to help with Insomnia.” Adiralette looked at the flowers and leaves in Finnley’s hands before nodding. ”Correct. If you wanted to use those leaves for a deep lasceration what would you need to do?” Her teacher questioned her. Finnley thought for a moment as she put the herbs in their basket. ”You h-have to grind it up and add some water and…and...add…something to keep swelling down?” There was a variety of herbs that could do that so for Finnley to have to narrow it down without knowing the exact situation was partially impossible. Finnley smiled nervously at Adiralette as her teacher smiled at her. ”Correct again Finnley. You’ve really improved a lo—“ Her mentor’s breath hitched as she grasped her bulging stomach. Finnley flew to her side, her hands fluttering over Adiralette. Adira placed a calming hand on her prentice’s shoulders. ”Go find a herb for pain as well as a source of water.” The pregnant woman’s voice was laced with pain but she ushered Finnley off. Finnley looked nervously at Adira before flying off to do her mentor’s bidding. She wondered if she could find that one weird plant that Ime had showed her which she later found out was called Nume. Nume had many uses but the problem was that it was hard to find. But first water was important and would be pretty difficult to find since Finnley didn’t know the area Adira had brought them to. Standing still to get a listen of her environment, she thought she heard the trickle of water further away from Adira. Looking back hesitantly, she set off at a quick pace towards the sound of water. It was a small stream but it was water. Finnley didn’t have anything to purify it with so she would just have to hope it was clean. Taking a water skin out of her bag, she filled it before starting back the way she had come. A familiar sight caught her eye though, a red flower with blue thorns. That helped with pain too right? It had been what she was looking for when she met Ime. It was, definitely, but what was it called? Adira would want her to know the name of anything she picked because then it meant she was sure it was what she thought it was. With a frustrated sigh, Finnley couldn’t remember what they were called but it wasn’t a normal circumstance, her mentor was in pain. Picking two of them and being careful of the thorns, Finnley was about to head back once more when she gasped and stood in front of a tree. There it was! Nume! And there were lots of leaves. She picked a fourth of them, keeping them in her hands so nothing would happen to them in the bag, Finnley raced back.

S O L O........P A R T........T W O A N....A D D I T I O N 1,175 words When Finnley made it back to Adira, her mentor was on the ground leaning against the stump ”Finnley…the baby is coming…” Her breaths were ragged and the woman’s arms were wrapped around her stomach. ”I’ll run back to camp and bring someone! Ma-maybe N-Namora! She j-just delivered a baby not l-long ago…I’ll be right back!” Finnley hadn’t even made it a few steps away before Adira groaned in pain. ”FINNLEY. There’s no time. We’re too far away. You have to do it. I’ll help you. I’ll tell you what to do. But I can’t wait.” Finnley looked at her skeptically, but it was her mentor and if she said it couldn’t wait it couldn’t wait. Her face twisted in nervousness. ’I don’t know enough about childbirth to do this! Even with her instructions! How in Serin’s name can I do this? Finn’s inner monologue was interrupted by another groan of pain by her instructor. ”Finnley, dear. Take my sash and spread it on the ground beneath me when I lift myself up.” Finnley did as she said quickly, grabbing the sash from her mentor and working quickly to spread it out. ”What did you bring back?” And now for the part Finnley dreaded since she couldn’t remember the name of that one plant. ”I…I found water. A-and some Nume…and…and this…” She said as she held out the red flower with blue thorns. ”Ah, Shreken flowers. And nume. Good find. Grind up the nume with a bit of water and…spread it on the lower portion of my stomach and spine.” To numb the lower portion of her mentor’s body she could only assume. She had to help her mentor to her side to rub the poultice on her back after she got it all ground together. Adira sighed after a moment as the nume started taking effect. ”Much better. Good. I’m going to prop myself up, and bend my knees as the contractions get closer together. Mix the shreken with water and grind it so I can drink it. It will help with pain and also speed up the contractions and therefore childbirth.” How Adira could remember all this in all the pain she was in Finnley had no idea, it was quite astonishing. Picking off just the petals and discarding the thorns since they could be poisonous, she ground up the petals with water until it was ground finely, and then added more water. Handing the drink to Adira, she let her drink as much of it as she could, which ended up being all of it. She wasn’t sure if that was good or not but trusted her mentor to make the right decision. ”Adira I have to go get more water! I-I’ll be right back!” ”Hurry.” Was all was said in response as another contraction made her grunt in pain. Finnley ran faster than she ever had before and found the stream with surprisingly little difficulty and found her way back just as easily. A cry of pain rang through the forest as she got back to Adira. Even with all the pain controlling herbs she had found, childbirth was still very painful. How could any woman go through this pain? ”It’s getting closer, Finnley. The contractions are really close together now.” Her breaths were sharp. ”Deep b-breaths Adira…” She knew that at least. Adira nodded and slowed her breaths before continuing. ”Once they get stronger and even closer I’ll have to push. You need to make sure the-the baby’s head comes first. It’s v-very important.” Adira’s knuckles were white on both of her clenched fists. Finnley took her mentor’s left hand and let her squeeze it until she thought her hand would fall off. It took a minute to get Adira to release her hand and she gave her some water as soon as she made sure her hand was still attached.
”Get..ready…Finn…” Adira said through clenched teeth. Squeamishly, Finnley moved into place, moving her mentor’s skirts. It was a part of her mentor she wished she didn’t have to see. But a part of being a healer meant she might have to do this again. A cry of pain came out Adira’s mouth and Finnley started paying more attention, ready to help the baby out if it needed it. ”Oh no…” Finnley said as she saw a tiny foot appear. ”Adira it’s n-n-not the right way! It’s a f-foot!” Finnley said frantically. ”I…I’m so sorry Finnley. You’re going to have to reach in and turn it around.” It would be a difficult birthing Finnley was sure of it. But she had to do what she could for Adira. Grimacing, she pushed the foot back in and followed it and was surprised that it wasn’t too difficult to turn the little one around. ”O-okay. Push Adira!” And her mentor did. With a cry of pain Finnley saw a head begin to emerge. Once it was out enough, Finnley grabbed it gently and started pulling before she realized the next problem. ”It..The…the cord is wr-wrapped around the baby’s neck…” This was not good. Not good at all. ”Its…too difficult to do right now. You’ll have to unwrap it after it’s all the way out. Just don’t pull…too much…you could strangle the baby.” With that news, Finnley stopped pulling the baby. At least by now, the shoulders were out and she placed her hand under it to keep it level. The legs came quickly after with a gasp from Adira. ”It’s a girl!” Finnley let Adira know right after but she had other things she had to worry about. Working quickly, she unwrapped the cord from the baby’s neck but the little girl hadn’t cried yet. Were they supposed to do that immediately? ”Use the knife in the bag to cut the cord and tie it as close as you can to the stomach.” Finnley did as she was told, taking a few moments to find the knife. After that was taken care of, the baby moved only little. ”Adira the b-baby hasn’t cried yet wh-what do I do?!” Finnley was frantic and tears started forming in the young prentice’s eyes. ”Wash her off with some of the water. Pay attention to her face and make sure nothing is blocked.” Finnley once more did as she was told and it seemed the cold shock of the water in the warm Juaharan air was the shock the baby needed and a wail rang through the forest. A smile reached Finnley’s face as she handed the newborn back to her mother. ”She’s beautiful.” Finnley remarked, sitting down, keeping her soiled hands away from her clothing. ”I’m lucky to have had such a talented prentice with me to help bring my little girl, Finny, into the world. I’ll make sure she knows her name came from inspiration of the shifter who helped her into this world.” Finnley beamed with pride and dipped her head to her mentor. ”I would not have been able to do it without your mentorship. I am grateful for you, and thank you.”
