Her legs throbbed and her tail burned, and everything pretty much hurt everywhere. And in the end, she hadn't even been able to take the little pain in her side as a hostage. Anchovy had gotten away, or at least out of her reach. She had seen that the little usdia had been burned badly, but it didn't matter if she was not in Lux's clutches. She turned back to the forest where the fire was slowly dying down and flames licked lazily at the blackened branches of the trees. At least she had gotten out mostly unscathed. She had feared briefly that Mest would pursue her, but it seemed that the idiot valued his family more. Speaking of idiots... Lux turned to her two minions with a sneer.
"YOU USELESS PILES OF DUNG!" her tail whipped up and struck against the quiet and shaking mare's flank, before slicing at the small shivering usdia's snout. "Why are you both such failures?" she hissed.

Sugar barely registered the biting sting of Lux's tail. She was in shock, and understandably so. When she had pledged her loyalty to Lux to protect her sister, she didn't know what she was getting into. Intimidation, manipulation, kidnapping, and straight up murder. She had just watched Lux destroy an entire family simply over an obsession with a little usdia. The little usdia that was so burned and looked so defeated when Sugar had stumbled upon her while searching the charred forest, that she couldn't let Lux have her. She couldn't bear to see another innocent get pulled into this hell. Sugar had let Anchovy go, a fact that Lux was not aware of. She was trapped here, in this awful place with this awful mare, but that didn't mean that she couldn't make her own choices... not like Malenki. Sugar's eyes strayed down to the little shaking stallion. She could not imagine being raised by this vile mare.
She looked back up at Lux when she heard the mare's hissing. Was that... was that a question she was supposed to answer?
"I... I'm sorry, Lux. I'll try harder next time." she promised.

'I should be used to this by now,' he thought, wincing at the familiar bite of Lux's tail. 'Why am I shaking?'
Why was this time so different? Why did this hit so close to home? Mal knew why, deep inside. That family had shown him kindness when he'd met them as a foal. They had been the first to treat him in such a way, and it had stuck with him. They had been so friendly, and he had a hand in their demise. Anchovy had been the closest thing to a friend that he had. And now she was probably horribly burned and hurt, or even dead. Her fathers and siblings were probably dead too. She'd never forgive him.
Lux always said that friends were weaknesses. Relationships were weaknesses. You didn't want any weaknesses in your life. But somehow... he felt like he was at his weakest point right now, in this charred clearing.
He sighed as Sugar apologized. She didn't know any better. When Lux was yelling at you, you just took it. There was no other way.

A maniacal laugh bubbled up in the mare's throat. "You're sorry?" she giggled, her tail lashing against the ground. "If only apologies were little annoying usdias," she growled, getting up into Sugar's face. "I don't care about your apologies or your 'I'll do better next time's - I CARE ABOUT RESULTS!" she screeched. "DID WE ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING TODAY? ANYTHING?"
She glared down at Malenki, who was smart to keep his mouth shut as always, before refocusing on Sugar.
"No. We. Did. Not." she hissed, glaring holes into Sugar's skull. "And whose fault is that? Certainly not mine, Sweetie Pie! Someone isn't pulling their weight around here, and you're looking awfully heavy as of late,"

Sugar held her breath and shook as Lux lashed out at her verbally, mere inches from her face. What was she supposed to do? Malenki had just stayed silent, and she wasn't tearing into him... but now Lux was riled up, would it anger her more if Sugar stayed quiet? Her head spun, and she tried hard not to cry. She wanted to be home with her sister. But if she left, Lux would track her down and take her sister too.
"Please I promise! I promise! I'll do anything to prove myself!" she begged, backing away and almost tripping over her own hooves.

Was it awful for him to be relieved that there was someone else here now to take the brunt of Lux's verbal beatdowns? He had been hoping that Sugar would last longer, but it seems like she was on the brink of cracking. Whether or not Lux would use that to her advantage was up in the air. Lux was very good at breaking someone down and then building them back up the way she wanted. It was part of the reason that he had been able to survive past foalhood.
Movement caught his eyes and he tried to contain the sadness that welled up inside him. The two foals, Anchovy's younger siblings, were stumbling their way. Lux had seen them out of the corner of her eye before he could attempt any kind of warning gesture, and she was now approaching them with a fake worried look on her face. Sugar's eyes were wide and unfocused, no doubt imagining the future of these foals.
He looked up at the sky as dark clouds started to roll in. May whatever gods exist have mercy on them.
