Akis Sangfroid was swimming. Rather, she had been swimming. Not too long ago, she had reached the ocean for the first time in her relatively short life. She had been excited at the sight of so much water, even more so when she realized that, unlike her sister and father, she wasn’t limited to just the land. Unlike Addy, who took after their father, she took after their mother with Zahavah’s ability to breathe underwater. Akis had heard herself described as a “kelpie” or something, though she wasn’t certain what that meant. She hadn’t thought too much about it at the time. Instead, she had happily dove into the water, laughing as the waves and then current pulled her away from the shore. It was a whole new world, and she was thrilled to explore it. Granted, there weren’t that many people to interact with, which was a bit of a disappointment, but she didn’t mind too much. Not yet, at least. When she got bored with her own company, she would head back to the shore. Or maybe she’d pick a fight. That was a great way to make new friends, a method learned from her mother. Papa wouldn’t have wanted her picking anything, but that was just him.
Of course, that had been her plan… until she swam into the seaweed and somehow got stuck. So, yes, she HAD been swimming. Now she was tangled up and trying to figure out how to break free. A feat that was proving easier said than done.

Zo tossed his newest bauble up and then caught it again as it started to sink, grinning to himself. He couldn’t wait to show it off to his brother and Cece. It was a rather sparkly rock, set in a pretty ring. It was rather valuable, Zo was sure. He had an eye for these things. Humans would probably pay a lot for the little thing, especially those who traveled about on the large boats. But that wasn’t why he liked it so much. When he took it up to the surface, the sun caught on it just right to show hints of other colors in the stone. It was shiny! Zo did love shiny things. So did Mal, though not, Zo was sure, as much as the younger twin did. Which was just as well. Zo loved his brother and would do anything for him, but he wasn’t sure how he’d feel about sharing his horde. Oh, he knew that Mal was usually a bit irked with him when they worked hard to get a new shiny, which Mal thought would go toward feeding them all, and Zo decided to keep it. But Mal never refused Zo anything. And it wasn’t like they were really hurting. Sure, seaweed salads did get a little old some days, but that was why they went up stream to the fresh water lakes and ponds, to get a bit of variety. And to… y’know… “liberate” other shinies. Cece was perfectly capable of feeding herself. In fact, Zo was pretty sure she preferred it that way. So, really, it wasn’t like they were hurting for it. But… maybe… Zo should keep the ring to himself, just to keep his brother from popping a blood vessel or something…

Akis squirmed one more time, trying to get a leg free, and failing. If she could just get one leg free then maybe, just maybe, she could get out. It was the strangest thing. The way the seaweed knotted around her, it was almost like it was some kind of net. But that didn't make a whole lot of sense to her. After all, who would make a net out of seaweed?

He was just turning a bend in the reef when a niggling feeling made him wonder if he was forgetting something. There was definitely that feeling of having left something undone... He was pretty sure he had remembered to spring all the traps on this particular path. That was why he was taking it back to their little hideaway. It was the safe one. So why did he feel like he'd forgotten something?

A flicker of motion, a glint of something catching the light, caught Akis’s attention. She froze for a moment, peering through the water in an attempt to see if the movement was caused by a potential rescuer…. Or a predator she should play dead to. Not that she would play dead. That simply wasn’t in her. She knew herself well enough to realize that much, at least. She was not Addy. She didn’t have her sister’s ability to make the wise choices. She was more the jump head first and hope things worked out type. Which, now that she thought about it, might be part of the reason she was in this current predicament. Huh. Something to think about later. Once she established that the movement was begnin.

Oh yeah. There was definitely something he was forgetting. He knew it now. He only got that naggling feeling when there was something important he was supposed to do but he didn’t. Now if only he could remember what… Just as he was trying to chase that thought down, he swam through the seaweed and came to an abrupt halt as the trap he had so lovingly set up snapped around him. With a strangled “Gurk!” he found himself suspended upside down, clinging to his prize as his seaweed ropes tightened around him. His first thought was that he KNEW he had taken down all those traps! He just knew it! Oh… but… he must have forgotten one. He sighed. “Oops,” he muttered, realizing that he would have to wait for Mal to find him.

Well, that answered that question. Akis peered at her new neighbor. He appeared to be harmless enough. She had seen mers before, though she hadn’t been so close to one before. He seemed a little different from the ones she had observed at a distance. For one thing, he seemed to have spines of some sort. But then again, maybe she just hadn’t noticed that on the others because she wasn’t close enough to. From a distance this fellow would no doubt look just like all the others. Either way, he was stuck just as thoroughly as she was, so he couldn’t be too big of a threat. Though… oddly enough, he did seem resigned rather than upset or panicked. She wondered if this was a common occurrence in these parts. “Howdy,” she greeted.

Zo jumped a bit at the voice and twisted in half, ignoring the twinge as his muscles protested the movement. His reward was a curious orange face, caught up in the trap a little big away from him. Huh. So he had forgotten TWO traps. Now why had he put them so close together? That wasn’t like him… He shook away the puzzle for later thought and focused instead on the mare watching him. “Hi,” he returned, cautiously. Then, realizing that he had the upper hand, or at least that he should ACT like he had the upper hand, he tried to sound confident as he demanded, “Who are you? What are you doing here? How long have you been there?”

“Not long,” Akis answered, trying not to giggle as the mer puffed himself up and tried to look imposing. The effect would have been better if he hadn’t been looking at her from an upside down tangle. As it was, she knew better than to alienate her only potential ally. “I just got caught here. Thought I’d duck through the seaweed and whomp! There I go… My name’s Akis, by the way.” She considered adding that she’d just been passing through, since that was the only one of his questions she hadn’t answered yet, but she decided to give him a chance to speak instead. It was only polite, after all, to give him an opportunity to introduce himself before she continued yammering on.

A piece clicked into place in Zo’s memory and he finally realized why he had placed the traps so close together. He hadn’t, not intentionally. The one that the mare, Akis, was tangled up in was one he had set up months and months ago. He had taken down all the traps along this particular path and put up newer ones least half a dozen times since then. He must have forgotten about that one this entire time. Not realizing it was there, he had laid down the one that had caught him near it, thinking, as he must have done so long ago, that this was an ideal place for such a trap. He realized just how lucky he was not to have gotten snatched up in Akis’s trap in all this time. Mal would probably call it a fool’s luck. Too bad it couldn’t have held out a little longer. Ah well. Belatedly, he remembered the courteous thing to do when given a name. “Zoisite,” he tossed out.

“Nice to meet ya, Zoisite,” Akis said when it was clear that he wasn’t going to add anything else. Maybe he was waiting for the answer to that third question. With a shrug, she supplied it, “I was just passing through, you see. Didn’t really have a destination in mind. I’d heard some stories about these waters, something about sunken ships or… something. I dunno. Anyway, it all seemed interesting, and I didn’t have anything better to do, so I took off to find out if it was true. Like I said before, I saw the seaweed, and it looked like there was a path on the other side, so I ducked through, figuring I’d explore a bit then head on my way. And here I am. What about you?”

Sunken ships? Was she looking for his home? He bristled a bit at the thought that she might be looking for his horde… er… treasure…. er… home. Just as quickly as he bristled, however, he stomped down on his instincts. Maybe she didn’t realize that the ships belonged to him and his brother. In fact, he was starting to suspect that she didn’t even realize he was, technically, her captor. That was probably due to his brilliant plan to get caught up next her. Yes, she’d trust him now and think him a co-hort. He could surely drag some information out of her! At least, that was how he was going to tell this story when he saw Mal. “The same,” he answered her, simply.

This guy clearly wasn’t the talkative sort. But Akis could work with that. Not that she’d had to in the past. She usually ran into other people who were, while not as talkative as she could be, at least chatty in their own rights. She wasn’t sure how she felt about this fellow’s short answers. The most she’d gotten out of him had been in the beginning when he’d asked all those questions. Maybe that was the problem. Maybe he needed to be the one in charge. Well, that was just too bad for him, because Akis was on a roll. She waited another few seconds to give him an opportunity to add more to his story if he was so inclined, but when he didn’t jump right in there, she tried another question of her own. “Any idea who might have rigged these things up?”

Zo stiffened with surprised, though he managed to keep his expression neutral. “Huh?” he asked, oh so intelligently. Inwardly, he was panicking. How could she possibly know he was responsible? He hadn’t said a word about it! In fact, he’d been trying to seem as victimized as she was! How could she know? Wait, wait, calm down! He could almost feel his brother whapping him upside the head and telling him to stop and think for a minute. She hadn’t accused him of anything, not yet. She had just asked him a simple question. That’s right… she didn’t know. She couldn’t. How could she? It was… it was…. Dumb luck! Right, that was it! If he could just keep his cool, it would be fine. He could still pull this off. He just had to keep his head. “Er,” he muttered, “No?”
