Alder didn't like to leave his mother alone for too long. After his father had gone off to fight in the Kalona war, she had not been the same. She had refused to leave the spot where they last saw him, convinced that he would come back to that spot. But the dust had settled, the Kalona had lost, and Anchor had yet to return.
Alder had somehow convinced Moira to stay close for the time being, but he could tell that his adventurous sweetheart was getting fidgety. He sighed, and continued the short distance to the little clearing that Jasmine had refused to leave.

Jasmine leaned against the trunk of a tree and watched a small family of squirrels play and chatter a few feet away. She sighed and couldn't help but think back to when her little family would play in such a carefree way. But now her children were grown and off with their loved ones and Jasmine's loved one... Jasmine's loved one was not here. Of course Alder stayed nearby because he was worried about her, despite her constantly urging him to go off and live his life with Moira.
Speaking of Alder...
The mare's ears perked as her son broke through the treeline with his usual uncertain and shy steps. She smiled.
"Hello, sweetheart. Back so soon?"

Alder flushed. Did he really seem like that much of a worry wart? Moira would probably say yes.
"Hi, Mama," he leaned down to nuzzle her hair in greeting and then settled himself beside her on the ground. "You know I don't like to leave you alone," he murmured, looking off to the side.
He'd been tiptoeing around the subject of Anchor lately. It was getting to the point where Jasmine was just wasting away. She'd put on a cheerful face, but Alder could see through it. Her children were grown, her mate was gone - most likely slain by a kalona - and she was just... here. Doing nothing. Waiting for someone that was most likely not coming back. He hadn't been able to get in contact with Jack, too worried about Jasmine to venture so far away from her and into the desert. Alder had mentioned a family visit to the Amachi clan to see Jack, but Jasmine's reply was always 'We have to wait till your father gets back'. Alder really wished that Jack was here, confrontation was not Alder's thing. But he would try, for his mother's sake.
"Mom..." he started.

Jasmine sighed, leaning into her child's touch. How many times had her poor son come to keep her company? How many times had he tried to get her to do something with herself? She... she knew that it wasn't good for her to sit here. But, she just could not give up hope. Anchor was out there somewhere. He said he'd come back, and she believed him. He was her rock, her knight, her everything.
"Alder, don't," she whispered. "You know I... you know I can't abandon your father,"

The stallion grimaced.
"I-I'm not asking you to abandon him, Ma!" he exclaimed. "Just, just look at yourself! What would Dad say if he saw you right now? Would Dad want you to waste away waiting for him if he... if he died? Dad was a fighter!"

She flinched at the past tense of her son's words. For the first time in quite a while, she felt anger bubble up inside her.
"Your father IS a fighter! He is out there somewhere - and you cannot convince me otherwise! He would never leave our family!"
Her mind was racing about a mile a minute, and she thought back to the two unicorns that had passed through not too long ago. The were traveling healers. She had asked them if they saw someone that looked like Anchor, and they hadn't, but they were always meeting new faces.
What was she doing? She was just sitting here like the bedraggled princess that Anchor had pulled out of that river so long ago. Sitting here waiting for her prince to come save her. She stood up quickly and watched Alder cautiously stand after her.
"I..." she took a deep breath and nodded. "I'm going to go find him," she said resolutely. "I'm not letting go, he's out there. It's my turn to go get him,"

Alder's eyes widened as his mother's voice raised to a level and intensity he had never heard before. He watched her shoot up from her sitting position and slowly rose after her.
"Mom, you can't do that. You're... you're," he struggled to find accurate words that wouldn't further enrage his mother. "You're not healthy," he finally said. "You're... small and fragile," he winced. "There are a lot of nice creatures out there, but along with that, Ma, there are a lot of bad."

Jasmine felt her anger burn hot like liquid fire in her throat. But she knew the reason. Her son was right, and that was why she was angry. She was small. And frail. And she would probably be killed by the first unkind stallion or mare that she encountered, because she could not defend herself. Anchor had taught her some tricks, sure, but nothing that would get her out of a fight with a pawed or clawed creature alive. But the traveling healers gave her hope. Hope that she clung to, desperately.
"There are healers. Traveling healers. They're unicorns - peaceful and smart - and they could help me! I could go with them, Alder." she cried. "They could help me find your father,"

"Mom!"
Alder felt so frustrated. This was not where he had seen this conversation going at all. He sighed and took a deep breath. Trying again, in a calmer tone.
"But Mom, do you know them? They're strangers..." This would be a cheap shot. "Mom... Dad said never to trust strangers..."

"Your father said a lot of things, Alder! I promise I'll be back for you was one of them!" Jasmine narrowed her eyes and gestured around with a hoof. "Well? Do you see him?"

"Mom, that's not the same," Alder sighed. "You don't even know these unicorns, they could be bad news. Or they could be traveling in dangerous areas. There are so many Kalona roaming about nowadays. How will they defend themselves? How will you defend yourself?"

She knew how unicorns defended themselves. Anchor had told her and had shown her.
"Unicorns can defend themselves! They can gore others with their horns and completely rip them apart if they wanted to!"

Alder squinted at her.
"And yet these are peaceful traveling healers," he exclaimed incredulously. "Are you listening to yourself? Just come with me. We could visit Jack! Don't you wanna see him?"

Jasmine lost all the hot air she was fighting with and looked away from Alder, ashamed.
"We can't, not without Anchor,"
