Name: Skaeys Fallin

Blood colour: ███ Rustblood #660000

Gender: Male

Personality: For someone as outgoing as Skae, he rarely gets an opportunity to interact with other trolls. This can be blamed on the fact that he moves a lot, seeking adventure and shinies with his lusus. When he does meet up with others he's very shy for the first few moments, then gradually starts to warm up as his curiosity is peaked. In a way he's very much like a wild bird. Cautious, curious, and tempted by little coaxing gestures. After a while he'll get used to others, and try not to think too much on how he'll eventually leave them, and possibly destroy what ground he's built. If he ends up meeting the same troll again at a later date, he'll wonder just how much has changed between them and if he'll have to start over from scratch again. This leads him to fall back onto his ingrained habits of being shy and a bit wary.

Taldad often jokes, in a sad and almost regretful manner, that Skae's life can be summarized by cycles. Meet troll, befriend troll, leave, forget about troll, meet troll again, remember troll, and eventually leave said as Skae gives in to the urge to wander away. His behavioral habits in such instances are akin to someone who is prone to forgetting things and simply does them over and over again, eventually recalling that they have in fact done that task already, but then simply shrugs and continues to go through the motions. Only to question themselves an hour or two later if they did do it, or if it was only a figment of their imagination.

While he is very aware of where he stands on the hemospectrum Skae rarely lets it influence his behavior around others. Unless it becomes obvious that such behavior would not be tolerated. Nothing ensures good behavior like the very real threat of getting culled or beaten does. Even then it might end up being a 50-50 situation and figuring out who is faster and more resourceful when it comes down to escaping. After all, one of the first things Taldad ever taught him, was how to use the world to his advantage. This has, of course, backfired spectacularly on him several times in the past.

This even applies to trolls he's met before and trolls that he even genuinely gets along with. There's no telling how much, or even what might have changed for them during the time Skae has spent out of contact. Plus it never hurt to be a bit cautious around others. He wasn't omnipotent like the Empress seemed to be and his ability to read body language could only take him so far.

That said there's something about trolls that always seems to pull him back to seeking out attention. It's not just a biological urge to form bonds, but more along the lines of 'I wish I could do that', or 'I wonder what it would be like if I was like that'. In a way a part of Skae lives on through the stories of others. But deep down, underneath all the superficial reasoning, is the one true urge, and that is for Skae to find someone, or several someone's, that he can feel safe around. Safe enough to smother the need to move constantly, who wouldn't mind sticking up for him and making sure he doesn't get culled just because of his blood color.

But that urge felt more like a dream to him, because again, Skae was very well aware of his place on the hemospectrum, and even in his daydreams there's only so much he could bend to make it believable. But those daydreams and rehashing of stories both personal and fictional aren't the only thing that peaks his curiosity. While he wasn't the sort of troll who had to know everything that's going on in the lives of others, it helped to keep him alive on several occasions. He liked to keep his ear to the ground to know just what was going on in the world. Who was who, what was what, and where it was that he should avoid. Having friends who can give you a heads up was a bonus, and the process of forming those bonds was what really dragged him back from the far corners of the globe.

His hobby of finding interesting things came from observing Taldad, as the corvus' would frequently pause their travels to examine this or that, that had caught his eye. He would explain things to the best of his knowledge when questioned, and always encouraged Skae to figure out the uses of other things. This sparked a love of building and dismantling, taking apart one item to turn it into another. He's not too good at it, as his resources are limited, but the things he has made have made his nomad life much easier. It's a sign that Skae truly does like and value a troll if he gives them something he made, or found during his travels. It's hard for him to part with things if he has no intention of reclaiming it at a later date.

Skae loves storytelling. Not his own stories, but that of others. He loves listening to the world painted with someone else's words, seen through their eyes and colored by their own beliefs and experiences. No one story is ever alike, even if retold by a thousand trolls. Hearing the differences never fails to make him question the origins of the tale, and just how much of it has changed as time has gone by.

When he's afraid or overly excited Skae will peep. Slow with a low sub harmonic for afraid and rapidly with a higher pitch for happy. His laughter is more like a caw-like cackle and while he can crow and sing, he rarely does.

When he gets older Skae would love to become a chronicler of some sort, always surrounded by the history and stories of others.

Strengths:
Observant: There's something that can be said about body language, attention to detail, and having a smidge of empathy. It means you live longer. It also means that you pick up on stuff that others would rather you...not. But Skae has learned that the better you are at keeping secrets, the less likely others will realize that you know theirs.

Clever: If it's even a tiny bit interesting Skae will learn it and learn it well. He's quick with his fingers and his reflexes and his mind is often running several different tasks at the same time. He often tries to beat his personal records at assembling and disassembling things he's created or found. That being said Skae is more inventive clever than socially clever. He's not good with words or expressing himself with them. It's all about gestures as actions weight more to him, than words ever will.

Flaws:
Wanderlust: Being low on the Hemospectrum was never a good thing, being who he was, was also not a good thing. He was prone to offending others just by existing or attempting to modify one thing or another. This has led to a well developed urge to vanish right when the annoyance meters were starting to dip into a dangerous zone. Sadly Skae has had to leave behind small troves of hoarded treasures and half finished projects when the urge to leave hits. This urge also affects what little social interactions he manages to partake in. Because once he leaves he doesn't do it gradually. No notes, no last moment cryptic messages about future meetings. Nothing. Just an empty camping spot and unfulfilled promises to meet up again.

Socially Inept: Having to just up and leave every time he starts to feel settled does very little in terms of socializing anyone. Or even really exposing them to the social norms that society holds mostly everyone to. Oh sure he has a few friends somewhere out there that he somehow manages to keep in contact with via well timed letters, but it's different when it's face to face. Skae has a tendency to drop a few caws and cackles into his stuttered sentences and seems to forget at times, that not everyone can speak with their bodies and voice tones, just their words. Words are so silly. Silly mouth noises...

Weapon: Glaive

Appearance: Concept Skae favors loose clothing and shorts. Sure climbing and shimmying through tight spaces is a tad hard but comfort is comfort. His current favorite outfit is a worn out black t-shirt that lacks the right sleeve, has his symbol stitched on the front of his shirt in his blood color, beige shorts, and sturdy boots. A pair of rarely worn goggles and a shiny bead necklace completes the look.

His hair is likened to a crowcluckbeasts behind and despite his, or Taldad's attempts to tame it, it rarely, if ever, looks different.

Home: Old Hemisect City Chittentown (read: desert cave)

Lusus: Taldad is of the Corvus genus, a (insert species here) variant. He has a groove in his talons that can channel a special neurotoxin that his body produces, which helps him kill his prey. He takes special care to not infect Skae with this poison directly, instead letting him build up a resistance to it via his food.

Taldad is extremely grateful that Skae dotes upon him much like he dotes upon the young troll. He isn't unruly and rebellious. He listens when he speaks and will banter with him if the troll thinks that some rule is unfair or there just for the sake of being there. He never has to worry about him getting irreparably hurt, as the rustblood is a good judge on when something is getting to be too much. He's taught Skae to use his environments to his advantage, which comes in handy when ever he stumbles upon a ruin that's filled with armed traps. In short, Taldad is dreading the day when his little chick eventually hits the age when he thinks the corvus is uncool and doesn't know what he's talking about.

Power: None

OHC Prompt and History

Old Hemisect reminded Skaeys of his first Hive, a treasure of knowledge and interest and things that could eventually kill you by collapsing. He loved his Hive and made a point to return there at least once a Sweep. He was always thrilled to see that no one had decided to take over the underground system cave he'd been raised in. It was a pity that Taldad couldn't fit into the smaller fissures with him, but the poison taloned corvus had no interest in attempting to squeeze in with him.

Being high in the sky was way better then being underground somedays. It was one of the reasons why they'd found Old Hemisect, the glitter of light on metal as eye catching as watching the hemospectrum appear from a prism.

The run down city was an adventure, one rift with danger and excitement and So. Much. Loot. Everything from a twisted bit of metal to a broken bone could be fashioned into something else. Food was no problem for Skae. He was used to living on little and Taldad had made it a point to start hunting early. If things got a bit hard, well...no one missed an odd troll or their guardian. Plus it was a tad hard to pin it on someone they hardly ever saw.

Life was good until news of the change reached them. Taldad thought that it might be time to move on if the risk of death was high. Which, truth be told, it always was for a Rustblood. Skae though, saw it as a change to interact more with others. Perhaps see what sort of new things were in use and maybe..erm...acquire one for himself. If anything he was sure that it wouldn't be too hard to find ways to help or hinder along the way. It all depended on who was doing what and if it would affect him in the long run.

Extra:

Skae rarely sleeps in sopor, mainly because he doesn't always have access to it. Instead he uses patches every few days while out on an expedition. He also tries to setup camp early in the night if he doesn't look like he'd find anything stable enough to survive the sunlight. He likes not getting fried to a crisp and he'd rather not lose Taldad either, though he knows the corvus would shield him with his body if it ever came down to it.

Taldad helps with the nightmares on the days he doesn't, or can't use a patch. The corvus croons to him and tucks him close to his body, so close that he's practically sitting on him. He'll take longer preening his hair and takes special care not to leave him alone for too long. One never knows just how much damage the nightmares, and resulting lack of sleep, could do to a young troll.

Hey Lirende! I'm happy to see you enjoyed playing your meta character enough to quest for him. I really enjoy his nomadic status, it brings something new and offers a lot of opportunity for all sorts of different interactions. There are a few other things I wanted to touch on, though, so on to the crit!

You mention he's outgoing, but can also be shy for the first few moments of a meeting. Is there a more specific reason for his shyness? Does it have to do with meeting new trolls or could it be with those he's met in the past, as well? Or is it because of his social awkwardness and the fact that he moves around enough to make forming lasting relationships hard? I think getting a little more insight on this would add a lot to how we understand his interactions with other trolls.

Likewise, what about other trolls can peak his interest? Is it multiple things or are there a few specific things he tends to look for?

As far as his hobbies, he has his tinkering, but is there anything else he enjoys doing that might give us a better grasp on his character?

Jumping back to his interactions with other trolls, we get a glimpse into how he deals with others based on the perspective of the hemospectrum, but are there traits in others he enjoys, are there things he likes doing with others? How does he perceive other trolls of differing beliefs or personalities? Is he one to want to make genuine friendships or are his meetings often surface deep at best? While you don't need to address everything, I would love to see more of how he feels about/how he would deal with other trolls, as interaction with others is a large part of participating in Hivestuck.

On to his other important relationship: the one with his lusus. We see that he picked up interests from Taldad, but I didn't see much in the way of how Skaeys feels about his lusus. The relationship between troll and guardian is often (not always, but often) an important influence for how they deal with the world around them or with other characters.

Overall I think you have a good start, but just need to go into a little more detail with things. We want to see the hows and whys of your character so we can have a good understanding of who he is and how he fits into the world around him.

Updated.

1. His shyness with interacting with trolls stems from a little from column A and a bit from B. He knows he's not really a 'social norm' when it comes to trollkind. He doesn't live in his Hive most of the time or use sopor regularly, he travels all across Alternia (or will when he gets older), so he doesn't have much practice in speaking with anyone who isn't Taldad. His natural curiosity can sometimes be a hindrance when it comes to socializing, because not everyone else wants to know the 'why's or how-to' like he does. Add in the fact that he isn't up to date on much of anything, well. Insert foot in mouth most of the time.

When he does meet trolls that he can connect with, he feels like he's let them down when he just suddenly ups and leaves, and that self impression colors any future meeting between him and others. This doubles the amount of awkwardness and shyness that just oozes from his pores. He'd become a stuttering mess for a bit, until he's seen how the situation could go. If it's favorable he'll calm down and tentatively starting trying to repair the relationship, if it isn't favorable, well, he'll try to get the heck outta dodge. So to speak.

2. He's always curious about how other trolls live. Where they live, what influences their lives other than their lusus. Things like that. If they own or know how something works that he's come across, he'll want to know everything about it. If they're creative like he is, with building or dismantling, he'll want to stick around them for a bit, to see if he can learn anything new.

Another thing that he loves, is stories. Fictional or truth, raw or edited. He loves learning things that aren't in the schoolfeed.

3. Other than tinkering, adventure and learning? He enjoys just being on the move and flying around on Taldad's back. He'll probably try to invent a device that would allow him to fly around once Taldad dies and he gets 'grounded' for lack of a better term.

4. Skae doesn't have his head in the sand. He knows that there are trolls out there that would love to hurt him just because of his bloodcolor. At the same time he knows that there will be trolls who will like him, because of his color. He also knows that he can't win everyone over. Despite this he does want to form true bonds with others. It gets lonely at times when all you have is the wind on your back and your father at your side.

5. Skae loves Taldad. Like he's almost the golden child of lusus rearing. He doesn't act out, he listens well, and doesn't complain too much when Taldad gently sits on him when it's time to sleep. But on the other hand, it may or may not be a coincidence that their Hive is located in a cave, with spaces too small for Taldad to fit into.

Nitpicks first:

Quick reminder that mind reading/mind control powers are extremely elusive in this canon and as it stands are inaccessible to shop trolls! I would reconsider using the blueblood/mind reading comment because it’s not super applicable.

Also! You do a bit of tense switching in this application, which makes it difficult to read – “He wasn’t a blueblood…” vs. “He is very aware of where he stands…”, etc. Stick to present tense, please!

I’m confused at the paragraph that begins: “While he is very aware of where he stands on the hemospectrum…”
It took me a couple of reads to actually understand its meaning; you might want to revisit it. On one hand he seems flighty and on the other he’s got this submissive thing going on. When does fear win out vs. curiosity, and how does subservience come into play? Or does he act the fool until he has a chance to escape?

I feel as though you did a better job explaining his shyness/awkwardness/socialization to Sae than what’s in his profile. The elaboration on his traits are rather scattered and are reading as something like “he’s shy until he gets to know you” (which isn’t particularly ground-breaking). These can end up making him very middle ground, and he’s reading a bit wishy-washy. What I’m understanding from your response to Sae is this:

Skaeyes wants to make connections and friends, but his wanderlust causes him to abandon others. Because of this, he doesn’t have contact with others and becomes inept at communication. Because of THIS, it furthers his shyness and makes him question himself. BUT, because of his curiosity and loneliness, he keeps trying and creates a self-perpetuating cycle. It’s a huge loop of cause and effect!

Which is a SUPER cool concept. If this isn’t accurate, then you may want to do some elaboration on exactly when and why he acts the way he does at each “phase” of his interactions. But, if this is what you wanted to say then I suggest going back into your profile and making sure you show that progression as clearly as you did with Sae!

That being said, the way you’ve written Skaeyes’ social awkwardness in the flaw section does not read like a flaw. It’s more of a general quirk, which I don’t see negatively affecting him regularly. I CAN see his social awkwardness (specifically the lack of contact/etc) easily being a flaw, but currently it’s not super convincing. Be careful that his wanderlust/social awkward flaws are different from eachother as well! Having two social flaws that are related is on the edge already, so just be aware of that.

What would it take to make a true bond with Skaeyes? Right now it doesn’t seem like there’s much hope for anyone that comes in contact with him.

A part of Skaeye’s wanderlust is his fear of culling and conflict. Does he ever feel safe, or is his exploration also something he enjoys? In his wanderlust flaw it seems like it’s driven from necessity, but he also enjoys the adventure so when he leaves others in the lurch is it mainly due to necessity or the need to move on? When he leaves people does he do so to protect himself? Them? Just because? Obviously there are situational elements, but his need to make friends is so hindered by his wanderlust that I'm not getting the true gravity of why when the mood strikes he HAS to drop everything and shove off.

Alright! All crits aside, I really like the ideas you’ve got going on here. The idea that Skaeyes is liberated by his wanderlust but also crippled by it is very interesting to me and such a cool concept!

Yeah, I've noticed that I keep switching tenses as I write lately. I have no idea where it's coming from. :/

Anyway, fixed some sentences pertaining his wanderlust. Added in a bit with Taldad noting his never ending loop of phases. (That by the way, was exactly what I was going for.)

Changed Socially Awkward to Socially Inept, which fits the summary better I think.

Took out the bit about the blueblood and replaced it with the Empress. Took out the submissive trait, because I don't really see Skae as being submissive much anymore. Willing to help out others sure, but there's no real drive to do it unless it benefited him in some manner. Like going around and demoing buildings only to rebuild them in the META.

Added in the bit where to really get him to stay is to make him feel safe. Which will still be a feat to accomplish, but it's there. Because logical versus Instinctual are always at war with him.

His wanderlust originally stemmed from a survival issue. He HAD to keep moving or he would have gotten culled, simply because he was an annoying little rustblood. After a while it became habit then eventually something he enjoyed. Now it's a sort of toss up between 'My gut tells me I need to leave, because that olive blood keeps looking at me like they want to see what my blood color is' and 'I wonder how big the tree in XYZ zone has gotten and if I can climb it now'.

So depending on the situation, it might be a 'Needs to leave else will get beaten' thing or a 'I just feel like leaving.' I do eventually want to get him into a situation where he can choose to stay and get almost killed, because his friend had asked him to stay longer not too longer before the situation occurs. I also want to do one where he has to leave, or his friends will get into some serious danger. It'll probably be a 'leading off dangerous creature here' scenario.

Sorry it took as long as it did for me to get over here! Skaeys is looking good,! I might suggest some more clarification on the bit about Skaeys's opinion on the hemospectrum. It seems that the phrase, "Skae rarely lets it influence his behavior around others," means that he's equally flighty around everyone, but since that's not stated outright, I worry that I'm jumping to conclusions there if you mean something else.

Other than that, though...
