[*Pre Shangyue backlog ]It wasn't usually a chore for the Head Guard to go around and check how the newer lions in the pride were doing - that was usually a job for the priestesses and midwives and the like. They were the people-persons, Nyota was just a grumpy old man lion who commanded an army of lions . . . but you know, lions change sometimes.
So here he was, wandering the pridelands for the green star-pelted lioness that had found her way in to the pride, his own home, and had been so nice to him when they first met. Clearing his throat, he hovered around where he knew she had found herself a small niche in, going to sit his big butt down.
"Eshkohl, are you in currently?"

"Niche" was the appropriate word for the space Eshkohl had claimed as her own. The lioness didn't feel she needed much, and the den she lived in had previously been used by cubs as one of many places to play. Some had been less excited than others about her moving in, but most of those had grown past the age when they'd be playing around anyway. "I should think you'd be able to tell that fairly easily," the green lioness answered with amusement as she came the entire two steps from where she'd been lying down to the entrance where Nyota sat. "What brings you by today?"

There was a bubbly, kind of happy feeling when he heard the lioness' voice come out of a small den. He had been told that she offered to stay there, which was strange to him, but then again, he was the kind to nest alone in his own little holes.
Regardless, maybe this was what it was like when Kivuli used to prance around to meet the new members, when he was a cub.
"Well, I can tell where you reside, persey, as I am told these things, but I could not tell if you were physically resting inside." He teased a little, giving her a smile, trying to be funny - which was actually out of his normal regime.
"Regardless, I have come to see if you are settling in well. Usually the Priestesses and Midwives did it . . . but I figured I had a little time."

"And, as a Guard, I fall under your chain of command and so you, as my superior officer, do have a right to see to my welfare," the answer came out crisp and clean and the green lioness had to stop a moment as she gave herself a mental frown. The Mwezi'Johari was not, as she had seen firstpaw, a militaristic pride with a ranking structure. True, there were the different classes, Eshkohl having awoken in the Middle class, but from what she could tell, they were social features for the most part. Class did hold some sway over what ranks a lion could hold, but not a huge amount for the most part. Anyone could be a Hunter and most could be Guards. Everything else was elaboration and therefore it didn't matter if it was restricted.
"I'm doing fine," she said at last, bringing her attention back to the conversation at paw. "And what are you up to on this fine day?" the lioness asksed in return, turning the verbal ball back over to Nyota.

"Beyond the ranking system." He started, shaking his head a little. He didn't even really think of it that way - they were all his family. "Really, I came on my own volition, I was hoping you had situated well, which it seems you have." He answered, turning to nod again, before hearing her question, turning to her.
"It is a fine day - and my work is never done. Currently I'm taking a break from my rounds . . . so I figured I'd come, see if you had any questions or requests." It was a sly little plan, but he had successfully pawned some of the work on Kivuli - who he was certain would curse him to his grave for it.

Brown eyes blinked as Eshkohl considered the Head Guard before her. She didn't doubt that there was something he could (should?) be doing every moment of every day. So it was interesting that he'd chosen to visit her. The lioness wondered if she should be reading anything into that decision.
"I suppose you do this for all your new Guards, hmmm?" she offered delicately. The green female didn't want to get her hopes up that this was anything other than the norm for Nyota's behavior. But...if it wasn't...

A single black eye roamed a little to the side when she pinned him about coming around. It wasn't like he didn't do some kind of thing when he made acquaintances with his new guards. Not to this extent, of course. Clearing his throat again, he figured he couldn't just leave her hanging with an answer.
"Not . . . specifically the same." He muttered a bit, tail flicking side to side. "It depends on my interest, I suppose. There's kind of a normal way of introduction . . but I suppose you could say that I have a different interest this time around?" He stated.
Sure, he could be shy, but Nyota was never one to beat around the bush. He was sometimes too blunt.
"I hope it is not a burden." He finished.

His answer pricked her ears up with interest. So...this wasn't completely normal? There was something special about his interest in her comfort? Eshkohl wasn't at all afraid of speaking bluntly, she simply avoided it because most people seemed to think her rude when she spoke so baldly.
"A different interest," she repeated blandly, eyes twinkling. "A more...personal interest?" The green lioness leaned forward, closer to Nyota. Not quite touching him, but much deeper into his personal space.

Definitively deeper in his personal space. It had been an action he wasn't used to for a while - not since his previous mate had simply disappeared in the fray of the pride, leaving him alone. But, of course, it wasn't unwanted, he was actually probably looking more meek and shy about the situation.
"Yes. I can admit that there is a personal interest." He stated, softly as he regarded her, ears flicking a bit in his mane. "I hope that it is not unwanted. I find you interesing and lovely company." He admitted. If blush could be seen over the dark pelt of the one eyed lion, it'd be pretty obvious.
He feld like a silly cub again.

Well well well. Eshkohl hadn't expected something like this when the dark male had called her name. She'd had respect for him as the Head Guard, and was sure he deserved the position. The lioness had also come to realize that there was a good heart and a strong soul beneath the starry fur.
And he was handsome, despite the missing eye.
She hadn't even considered that he might find her attractive. But even if it was unexpected, she certainly wasn't going to turn him down.
"Such compliments," she teased. "A lioness might thing she was more than merely acceptable."
"I'd offer for you to come in but, alas, there is no space," Eshkohl continued, leaving her sentence dangling. She had hopes...but whether he read them or not, was uncertain as of yet.

Hey, at least she didn't scoff him off or anything. She was actually acting rather agreeably, which made the old lion feel a little happier - it seemed that he had not lost his ability to flatter a pretty lady.
Turning to look at the small den that she had found herself to live in, he rolled his eye a little, thinking about it, before going to stand up, nudging his head over his shoulder, grinning to her a little.
"I got a bit of a larger home, maybe you'd like to visit for a bit?" He offered, giving her a winning smile, before going to start toward his den, hoping she'd follow . . .

"I'd love to," the lioness replied with an answering smile. Eshkohl wasn't yet sure where this would lead to in the long run, but she was rather interested in seeing where it went.
All in all, she was very glad she'd met Nyota when she had, and had chosen to stay in the Mwezi'Johari.
