    (73 = Successful Capture!)

After she had been brought back, unconcious, Malta had been told that she was to not leave the Shadow's Maw tribe lands, even in the daytime and to – at least for the moment – restrict all of her activities there. She was told that she could ask for herbs and have them gathered by those on patrol but she honestly didn't trust them to know a seggan from a sporeleaf so she just stuck with what she had, to shy to ask.

She tried to be good safe and just spend her time in her lair and the main living area of the tribe, but eventually their attitudes and smell and everything about them just grated on her and she had to do something away from them. Today, that meant taking a walk through the forested lands of the tribe and clearing her head.

Her mind wandered wistfully towards her brother Maike and how she hadn't seen him in a long time. She missed him – and the family she had left behind – dearly.

A pair of eyes gleamed from the dark shadows of the forest and forced her attention back to the present.

She could just make out the shape of a Hastar – young, by the looks of it, and watching her with big, uncertain eyes.

    It was so cute.

Malta let out a soft croon, and it shifted, clearly about to bolt. “Hi there.” she said, taking a careful step towards it, “I'm Malta.” of course, it couldn't understand. It only watched her, its body quivering as she came closer. Finally, she was nearly close enough to touch it with her nose, if she wished. Something, though, about it's obvious youth and harmlessness made her feel more playful than curious. Slowly, she moved into the universal 'play' posture. “Do you want to play?”

For a moment, she thought the magical moment of being so close to something as timid as herself (and more beautiful, she felt, besides) would end and it would flee but, to her surprise (and maybe to it's) it – slowly and cautiously – adopted the same posture before bounding away, pausing a moment to flick its tail.

Malta got it. She bounded after it, and they danced in circles, a fun game, not of tag, but of just running around and being ridiculous. It neighed and Malta giggled in turn – this was more fun than she had had in... Gosh... years?1 Had it truly been years since she had played like this?

She crouched, her tail waving, before she mock pounced and continued the game. Yes. Years...

    Step 1: Capture.

    Fourth time: 70-100
    Bonuses: +10 for familiarity
    Soudul Hastar: +5 to capture
    Needs: 55 - 100

    = Win!

Detraeus picked his way through the fungal overgrowth of Soudul’s ‘forested’ area. Though on a job, his charge — a dovaa tradesman in need of defense and escort to sell his wares safely on the shores of the dark continent as well as protection through the desert — had relieved him, as well as the two other hired hands with him, of their duties for three days on the continent while business deals were conducted separately.

Detraeus took the opportunity to hunt. Or, at the very least, explore. It always relaxed him in a sense to immerse himself in the wilder portions of his homeland. Not, of course, in that it put him off his guard. He knew well the dangers of Soudul, particularly the farther one strayed from civilization, but accustomed to them as he was, he considered that half the experience, and the land was familiar and soothing.

It was some hours into his trek — back through vaguely familiar territory nearing a river that fed into Koralifel, as nearly every river, brook, or stream did eventually — that a source of unfamiliar noise caught Detraeus’ attention. Shuffling. The snapping of twigs. A crooning noise, feral as that of a dragon, but different, and alongside it, a whinny.

    Another hastar?

Interest peaked, Detraeus turned his attention specifically to the surrounding plant life and forest floor, on the lookout for tracks or signs of recent activity from something as large as a hastar — or larger — as he started towards the source of the sound. Whatever he anticipated, no matter how much he might have deliberated or guessed from the evidence, nothing prepared him for the sight that greeted him upon approaching the edge of clearing in question and the ‘source’ of the disturbance:

Directly before him, for all to see under the light of Soudana’s moon, pranced a young hastar, and the self-same khehora — hard to miss, this one — that Detraeus had encountered now on multiple occasions. The hastar, less than two full spins of the four seasons in age, if he had to guess, danced and hopped with the agility of a colt, openly playing with Malta as though blissfully unaware it was engaging with a predator.

Then again, Detraeus supposed as he snorted and shifted his shoulder to rest against the trunk of a large tree, she wasn’t particularly predatory in nature. But it wasn’t as though the hastar could know that. The corners of his lips twitched regardless, amused in spite of himself. After a moment’s debate on whether to interrupt or wait until one or the other noticed him, Detraeus eventually concluded that he had nowhere to be, and no rush to get to wherever ‘nowhere’ was.

He settled in his position, and waited.

    (35-100, SUCCESS)

Malta stopped their circular chase and murred, crouching and wiggling her tail playfully at the The hastar stopped, prancing in place, looking at her with its dark unreadable eyes. It huffed at her, bouncing a ways before stopping and huffing again.

    Malta took it as permission.

She pounced at it playfully, stopping just short of it as it bounded around her. And then, in an almost perfect, if awkward, mimicry of her movement, it leapt at her, whinnying its light, shy whinny.

She chirped happily. “Not bad!” she laughed.

    You're so cute

she was thinking of the next game when a silhouette caught her peripheral vision. The Hastar saw it too, whickering and backing off nervously behind her as she turned to look.

“Detraeus?!” Malta exclaimed, surprised and delighted – in part because she had recognized him and remembered his name.

Detraeus tilted his head, eyeing her and then shifting his weight to step out into the modest clearing at her greeting. The fact that the fates seemed intent on pushing them together intrigued him, in a way, but he wasn’t of a mind to complain. Soudana’s will had lead him to stranger situations in the past — Araceli, in his mind, ranking highest among them, though many times he wondered if she were not the result of Abronaxus’ will, rather than that of his goddess — but, regardless, he didn’t find it in himself to question or fight the prevalence of his encounters with Malta. Odd of a mix as they seemed, Detraeus found he didn’t mind — perhaps even enjoyed, in a sense — Malta’s company. He attributed a large portion of the sentiment to her naturally disarming nature. She, unlike the gross majority of persons he encountered, made him feel less on edge and more of an inclination to relax his rigid demeanor to at least some degree.

“Malta,” he greeted in return, and then turned his attention to the hastar, currently taking shelter behind the khehora’s substantial frame. A soft whinney sounded, followed by a flick of a tail, just visible. “Curious choice of playmate.” ‘For a predator.

Of course, she was also happy to see the Oblivionite in general. He was nice and he had protected her, which she found she could believe even without the grumbling and rumors from the other khehora, and the occasional joking jab from the elder (when they talked to her anyway). She usually minded what they said – she was a sensitive soul, and they were not. In his case, however, she found she did not care at all.

“Isn't she sweet?” she cheeped happily, turning to the hastar colt that hid behind her, huffing and shifting uneasily. “It's okay! This is Detraeus, and he's a friend!” she cooed.

Detraeus had had more than one chance to hurt her, and instead he had protected her, and she had protected him, and that meant – she was pretty sure – that they were friends.

She managed to give the hastar a nuzzle, which it allowed somewhat warily, tossing its small head while still saying close. “Lets go over and say hi!” she said, completely for its benefit since, of course, she had already greeted the Oblivionite.

She moved slowly towards Detraeus and the colt reluctantly followed, clearly not wanting to get too far away from its hiding place. Finally, they were close enough that it could peer out at Detraeus from beyond Malta's wings. “Go on...” she cooed at the hastar, before turning to Detraeus, clearly in a very good mood if the little wiggle in her tail was any indication. “Hold your hand out...” she suggested “Lets see if she goes to it.”

    “Mm.” Detraeus eyed the beast.

Nervous, certainly, but bold in temperament — if befriending a massive feral khehora was any indication — and sure enough, after an extended period of holding himself still, the young mare snorted, almost as though impatient with the sudden lack of play, or any action for that matter on the part of her company, and desirous of instigating some. After scuffing her hoof at the turf below and shaking her head, she took one, then two cautious steps out, venturing warily closer to where Detraeus waited.

He held his position, nothing but the slow sweep of his tail back and forth distracting from his overall inaction. Moonlight rippled off her coat as he watched, her muscles bunching and relaxing underneath with each step. When she came within range, she sniffed at him — examining nose, ears, cheek, and the clasp of his cloak — her muzzle close enough to touch if he leaned forward and her breath warm and damp across his face. Once satisfied with her initial exploration, she huffed and nosed his shoulder.

“Brave thing,” he murmured. Raising one hand slowly, he allowed her to examine that, too, before venturing a tentative touch to her snout, his own brow furrowed in thought. “Dangerous, though…that much curiosity.”

    The Only Black Uke
    Lets hope you roll better

Malta could not – even if she tried – hold back a low, crooning coo as the hastar nosed at Detraeus.

It was amusing; the innocent little creature so boldly inspecting the stoic, rugged Oblivionite. It did not occur to her that playing with a large khehora such as herself was equally incongruous.

Nor did she mind either way. It was simply such a joy to watch the hastar – or any cute fluffy thing – being cute.

She watched as the foal – grudgingly, with some slight subtle flinching – allowed its head to be touched before pawing back, pranced in place. The dark hastar tossed her head at Detra, inviting him to do something more.

“Mm!” Malta agreed. She wondered why the hastar was so brave – usually the Soldulan hastar was compared to her own size and timidity: 'Cowardly as a hastar.' some said.

“I wonder...” she said, a thought suddenly occurring to her as the hastar shorted at them both in energetic frustration, “Where her mother is?”

“Mm. Not watching her,” Detraeus grunted. Obvious enough, though he wasn’t entirely certain why giving voice to the fact and dwelling on it left a coil of acute disapproval, even in regards to a wild young animal.

No sooner had he said it, however, than something shifted in the nearby treeline. Immediately, the filly gave a trilled whinney and shook her head, darting back, away from both Detraeus and Malta, and towards the two eyes now glinting from amidst the shadows. The grown mare, presumably the mother, gave an answering call and a snort as Detraeus and Malta’s previous company pranced around her energetically. One n** to the flank, though, and the filly was off, allowing herself to be nudged and herded out of sight. The mother gave the two of them one final ‘meaningful’ look over her shoulder before flicking her tail and following her daughter out.

Detraeus rolled his shoulders, an unexpected knot of tension easing back out at the sight. It ought to have displeased him, he thought. He’d been wanting a hastar of his own for some time now, and with this one’s departure, there went yet an another opportunity, out of his grasp. Yet, for some reason, watching the filly follow after her mother came as more of a relief than anything else, and he found himself all but wholly unbothered. After only a brief period, he dismissed the thought.

There would be plenty of opportunities, later. Patience always won out in the end.

Malta watched the hastar, the fully formed thought leaving her concerned. Her imagination was not as vivid as some, but it was not hard at all to imagine how a young filly came to be alone in the woods. She was about to rumble in sad sympathy when, as perfectly timed as an elder's story, the hastar's mother appeared.

She trilled happily as they wandered out of sight. “Well! That's good, then!” she chirped, turning happily to Detraeus, “I like it...” Her voice was suddenly shy. “When things end happily.”

With the Hastar resolved, she turned her attention to him, her earfins flaring out gregariously. “How are you? It's been...” She stopped, mid sentence: In the shrubs beyond, there were two familiar points of green-gold glow. Her earfins – and indeed, her entire body – drooped with disappointment. “I'm sorry...” she said, “I have to go.” She stood up from her crouch. “It was... really nice to see you again, Detraeus...” She looked at him morosely, “Maybe another time...”

The glowing eyes had vanished into the darkness of the shrubbery, but she knew that her kin was still there, still nearby, still watching her, and she didn't want to get into any more trouble. She started for the tribal lairs, looking back briefly and , lost for words, flicked her wing awkwardly in a farewell before hurriedly vanishing into the brush beyond.
