(36=Failure)
Kekeovonnai rested, attempting to recoup after being attacked by baby birds. While they were big and magic, it was also a bit embarrassing to be attacked by baby birds when he was long out of his shell himself. He was definitely not going to tell Zarri about this part, even if – especially if – he managed to catch one this time. He had an idea of how he would go about doing it, too.
He scampered back to the bluff, feeling excited: it was rare that he had a challenge - a real challenge, not a play challenge – and this was turning into one of those times. As he stalked towards his boulder hideaway and then the nest, he felt a sense of exhilaration, a thrill at discovering something new and of solving a problem.
He was confident, as he took hold of the nest with a careful, quiet bite of his jaws and a grasp of his claws, that this was the answer.
He dragged the nest back slowly, so as not to wake the occupants, who had returned to their slumber. His intent was to drag them back and then grab one while they were disoriented and hidden from their mother. The nest, though, was not tightly woven together – it was really just an arranged pile of leaves and soft refuse.
It began to fall apart, first at the far edge that dragged along, and then along his gripping claws and teeth until, finally, the material came away in his grasp and he was left with nothing but a mouthfull of crud.
He spat it out, annoyed – he had been sure that would work. He retreated a ways, just in case, and sat on his haunches, scrutinizing the nest.
Well. he wondered, glowering at the situation with frustrated green eyes, Now what do I do?
