Many small things led Sindri's path out of the Tower and into the arid desert waste, from her morning's tea to the bright song of chimes on her balcony to a simple gut feeling that whispered east. So it was that she found the former camp, littered with the debris of buildings and also, most fortuitously, bodies. Kneeling beside on she inspected one and then, with graceful movements written into the core of her existence and practiced through centuries, reaped their Final Fear, pulling it out to form a small sliver of a jewel. She moved to the next and the jewel widened.

Kostya liberally poured gasoline over every ravaged body he encountered, keeping a sharp eye turned to the ground for tablets. Someone else - also in Death, surely - had already done a preliminary sweep, but better safe than sorry.

The place used to be one of the more staffed outposts in the Gobi Desert, but it was no outpost any more.

He stopped short as Syntax sounded a mental alarm, notifying Kostya that there was an intruder. Weapon summoned, he shaded his vision with it, catching sight of a kneeling figure in the distance.

With slow caution, Kostya proceeded, barrel aimed at his target.

Slender, pointed ears twitched slightly at the barely there sound of life and movement approaching, but Sindri did not look up until the act of reaping was complete and a now gleaming jewel fully formed in her hand, lit from within by the power of Death and Fear. When she did, though, the crafter's eyes met his calmly over the graveyard grin of her banana, and Sindri asked, "What has brought you here?"

Syntax thrummed with the desire to fire, excitable. But this was either a student far, far from home or a horseman, and the idea of facing a strange one of inestimable power, alone, was not appealing.

So Kostya kept his weapon summoned, but lowered the barrel.

"Am here to dispose of dead," He said. "Must burn corpse to prevent... Mishap."

Sindri stood slowly, her hands visible and no weapon was summoned. "Mishaps are to be avoided," she nodded, "how do you go about it? I have heard some use salt, of which I am fond. Do you as well? You bear the sickle upon you clothing," the mare informed him, "what is it that you harvest?" She cocked her head slowly as she asked her questions, a petite and slender figure of wiry muscle and eyes that glowed faintly with curiosity.

Though she was aware of Hunters and their place in the destruction of her Clan, she did not hold any great hatred or fear of them. Curiosity, though...that was indeed a thing she had a constant wealth of. She'd never met one that was still alive.

Kostya gestured to where he'd left the tin of gasoline. The scent of it was heavy in the air where he'd spilled it, but it hadn't yet been carried this far by the breeze.

"Fire," he said, "is all that is require." For a time, Kostya did. It answer her question of the harvest, because sometimes he wondered as well. Death. Spies and secrecy, conspiracies and mistrust.

"Lives. And secrets." He pointed at the gem in her hand. "Your harvest?"

"Oh, how lovely," Sindri commented quietly, her voice still calm though there was clear sincerity. "What does signify? Some feel it is less the flames, and more the smoke that is at the core of such a rite."

Glancing down at the gem, she explained, "It is of death and for Death that I reap."

"It has no meaning. Is to avoid mishap, like say before." To Kostya, death was the end of a long march, an inevitable finale not worthy of fanfare, celebration, or condemnation. It simply was, because it meant that whatever died now was not.

"Body must be taken apart, or else can return. Turn back into Fear." He looked almost apologetic at the notion. "Am here to make sure our fallen from rank do not strengthen Halloween rank. Long term planning."

The Death hunter studied the gem, and consciously put his weapon away, the red and cyan glow fading from his now bared arm. "Can hold? Have glove if not want taint."

"That doesn't sound very worthwhile," Sindri replied critically. "Perhaps you simply do not know the real meaning. It would be well for you to find out, as action without greater meaning is often wasted thoughtlessly." It was said like a teacher, or some elder, imparting wisdom on the young and very likely foolish.

The gem was handed over, no glove required. The gem was Fear, concentrated, and not meant for humanity to handle freely. It sparks across his shield, and though briefly painful, not at all damaging in this raw, undirected form.

"Seven deaths are held within."

Unlike some of her pupils, Kostya listened to her words intently. It was clear now that she was a Jewelcrafter, capable of extricating something more interesting than maggots from a corpse. Even if her words did not apply to his rationale of the world, it did not make them incorrect in hers.

It would be a far stone to throw when he often felt like an angel of Death and reckoning when at work.

"My ritual," Kostya said, amidst the sparks, confessing to a horseman what no other human (save for Jane, but was she...?) knew, "I close their eye. If I am the end. And even if I am not. But not for all mission, only when the time is... Right."

When he was working for a different force than Deus Ex Machina. Offering the jewel back, he dug in his pocket for the one tablet he'd found earlier in the day. It held the engraving of a whip, and was heavier than it looked. Kostya held it out for her to take or inspect as she pleased.

"Vhen veapon live but hunter not, tablet is made."

"Ah, that is much better." She took the tablet with pleasure, inspecting its form and symbols. "What a terrible end, to have lost the ability to do...is it true they are aware? That the weapons live? How strange to experience the loss of living but not of life." Her voice, calm until then, turned pensive for a moment before evening out. "Why do you close their eyes?"

"Do not be so sad. It vill go into room with other tablet and wait there for one day or month or year or decade. It wait in sleeping until a hunter bond with it. And then yes, it come back to life. Activate, like sprouting plant."

He toyed with the tamagotchi at his belt, but made no mention of it.

"When I am closing eyes, is when I am..." Kostya paused, struggling to find the words in English. "There is no life after death. But is important to acknowledge the end. Especially if you are one taking them to that point."

The mare was entirely unimpressed at that description, "I hope they at least have dreams, to fill and guide such an existence."

Nodding at the explanation, Sindri intoned sagely, "You are guided by Death, then. It is well done, though a more thorough examination of your actions would not go amiss and could well lead to enlightenment."

Handing the tablet back without thought of keeping or destroying it, despite her distaste, Sindri commented, "You approached with weapon drawn. Were you intending harm?"

"Let me ask." Kostya probed at Syntax, inquiring with direct intent. Athe answer was slow, languid static, and sounded tamped down like he might be wrapped in gauze.

"No. Is like state of awake and dream, a period of waiting but not good sense of time passing. His answer is different, but that is vhat he mean."

Kostya did not comment on the advice, and instead pointedly stared at the dead bodies. "Da. Yes. It is horsemen that do this verk."

"But you as well," and again she tilted her head, gaze grown curious. "Does it make you more fearful, having taken lives, to have yours threatened in turn?" The relationship between humans and death was a constant source of interest, as they were always so very close to it.
