A beautiful, lush forest that connects Nix City to Applegate City. A serene, quiet place, the forest is home to many different kinds of Pokémon such as bug and grass types that love the large trees and tall grass. There are also smaller trees blocking the way here and there, making it impossible to proceed further into the forest without something to cut them down.

Laram looked at Zeus questioningly. The trainer relied on the eaglet's eyes more often than he probably should have. But Zeus' eyesight was incredible. The eagle shook his head and Laram nodded. Nothing in sight. But that didn't mean that they were safe. The forest had plenty of places for Pokemon to hide. The ranger tried to keep alert to all sounds around him. There was plenty of activity, but none of it seemed hostile. Laram kept catching glimpses of Pokemon darting behind trees. They were all relatively small, nothing like the size of the Pokemon he was after. At least they're keeping their distance. "Everyone stay on your guard. There's no telling what we'll run into out here."It was true, they had never been this deep into the forest before. Apart from the larger, more established trees, there was also smaller saplings everywhere. They were blocking any sort of path forward; but forward was their path. So Laram called upon one of his earliest allies."Shadow, use cut on those trees in the way. Baldur and I will help."The trainer pulled out his knife that he always kept on his person, and began chopping some of the smaller saplings in their path. While he did that, his Diggersby and Froakie went to work as well. The small frog created a blade of light in his hand and began slicing through the larger trees in their way. At the same time, Baldur began ripping up the trees that were too large for Shadow to cut through. The jackrabbit's strength surprised his trainer. It seemed a bit ridiculous that he was literally pulling up trees by their roots; effortlessly. In this fashion, they pushed deeper into the forest. It was hard work, but it would make their way back easier, so Laram had them keep at it. An hour later, they heard a cry deeper in, and rushed off towards the noise.

"Firnen, use Flame Burst! Thor, Electro Ball!" Laram and his team were under attack by spiders from all sides. From what the trainer could tell, the sun had gone down during their time in the forest, and the nocturnal Pokemon were coming out of the woodwork. The two attacks collided midair and rained down embers and electricity all around the red spiders. This seemed to startle them, and they recoiled to the cover of the trees. Their situation was getting worse by the second, and Laram had to think of a way to get them out. These creatures were obviously accustomed to the dark, which meant they could see well, even through obstructions. Which meant a smokescreen probably wouldn't work on them. Which was a difficult situation to be in. Smokescreening their way out was Laram's typical response to an overwhelming force."Firnen, Thor, do it again!" The two attacks collided once again with a similar outcome as before. However, the Pokemon didn't retreat as far. They were getting braver, and that terrified the ranger. The Pokemon were exhibiting a pack mentality, which was always dangerous for small groups. Laram knew it was only a matter of time before they would gather enough will to attack all at once. They were working up to it, and he could see that.
Usually packs had a hierarchy based on dominance that could be exploited. By taking down their alpha, the group usually dispersed. But these spiders weren't acting as if they had an alpha. They were just acting like a mob. This was worse for him. They were not a force that could be confronted alone. He and his team had to escape. They were nocturnal spiders, which probably meant they didn't like light all that much. He had a plan."Guys, get ready to run! Thorn, use Flash! Firnen, Thor, once again, as big as you can! Clear us a path!"Laram gripped his Pansage by his stomach and lifted him above his head. The monkey's tail began to glow brightly, and with an involuntary grin, Laram watched the horde shrink back farther than ever. They did not like the light. With one last explosion in the direction they needed to go, Laram and his team ran as fast as they could towards the edge of the forest, back towards Nix City. As they ran, Baldur hucked a small ball to Laram, and the trainer almost tripped trying to catch it. It looked like a Pokeball."Cool. Thanks Baldur."The trainer didn't know whether to laugh or be angry with his Diggersby for always wandering off to find random items.

Yamamoto was proving to be quite the slave driver. After their one sided battle earlier, the martial arts master had insisted that Regal now become accustomed to using his Pokédex in active battle while still only using his left hand for handling his Pokéballs. Throwing with his off hand was hard enough as it was without splitting his focus between aiming and gathering data, and it was taking Regal significantly longer to get anything done. It did have its merits, though.
With him working on analysis, Regal was able to give Icarus more careful instructions as the Pidgeotto took down the Parasect they were looking for on behalf of the Ranger Guild. It took the struggling trainer multiple tries before managing to actually seal the mushroom Pokémon inside of a ball, but he managed to do so without Icarus suffering any major injuries. Yamamoto was doing his part to assist as well, and carefully instructed Nova in the proper technique to use Seismic Toss. An attack the Charmeleon used to help Regal catch himself a wild Sawsbuck using one of his new Heavy Balls.
A wild Sudowoodo also presented itself and was subsequently brought down by Sylvain and Magnolia. The two of them were much smaller than the fake tree Pokémon, but together they were able to paralyze and subdue their opponent for Regal to catch with another apricorn ball. His coordination was still severely lacking, but the trainer was still getting quite a bit done. After placing the barriers and markers for the big catching contest, Yamamoto ushered Regal onward to yet another section of the forest, barely giving him a chance to catch his breath. There was still plenty of work to do before sundown, and he fully expected the trainer to finish his tasks before then. Hopefully he would still be standing by the end of it.

Now that the other participants had caught up to him in the forest, Regal was finding it much harder to catch Pokémon without being disturbed. Many of the bug types he had been pursuing were scared off by other people, and the trainer was having to work harder than ever to avoid lagging behind. He'd manage to catch a Paris and a Nincada so far, but he knew that wasn't going to cut it. Not if he wanted to win, that is.
Things took a turn for the worse after Regal and another trainer got into a dispute over catching grounds. He had discovered a grove of trees surrounded by bug types, but after catching himself a Weedle and Kakuna, another participant swooped in and threw a ball at the wild Beedrill he had been about to capture at the same time as Regal. Unable to tell who had made the catch, both trainers tried to explain that they had been there first, but eventually the negotiations devolved into a battle.
Sylvain and Magnolia were teamed up against the rival trainer's Croagunk and Herdier, who proved to be quite strong. Regals opponent had his Herdier use Helping Hand to power up his Croagunks super-effective poison attacks against his team, forcing the trainer to take the defensive early on. To counter, Regal had Sylvain use Detect and Agility to goad his opponents and buy time for Magnolia to power herself up with Quiver Dance. Recognizing the scheme just a little too late, the rival trainer attempted to switch targets only to have his Pokémon blasted away by a super powered Dazzling Gleam.
It was a sweet but very short lived victory. No sooner had Regal claimed his Beedrill than an entire swarm of the angry bug types descended on the two unsuspecting trainers for disturbing their nesting ground with a battle. Thinking fast, he sent out Jarvis to shield the two of them with Barrier before commanding the Porygon to Teleport them away. Declaring a truce, the two agreed to avoid each other for the rest of the contest as they were whisked away to different corners of the forest. Hopefully with them gone, the Beedrill swarm would become docile again. Either way, Regal didn't think he would be returning to that area anytime in the foreseeable future...
