Guardian Missive:

There are reports of a Feral Aedaun Alikhora (the feathered breed, white with green-feathered tips) calling herself 'The Protector of Dragons' that has been harassing dragon hunters in the Serenia, Ayr, Eowyn, and the Terra expanse. Recently this interference has cost the lives of several Orderite and Dovaa hunters.

Guardian outposts watching the Mara Stronghold report sighting a khehora matching this description flying into Eowyn from the direction of Serenia, and flying North-Northwest towards the desert and Taliuma.

All Guardian groups on desert missions, in particular those involving dragon extermination, are advised to be on the look out for this Khehora and to approach with caution: she is powerful, dangerous, and has been reported to be ruthless.

Any Guardian who brings in this Khehora's head will receive the bounty of a Peisio Tear.

Diabi Magic

Shadow Meld - Turn yourself into a cloud of smoke and hide in the shadows, regaining 30LP instantly and an additional 10LP each turn you are hidden. Maximum of 2 additional turns.
Costs 20 Initial Energy and 15 Energy Cost each turn hidden.

Shell of Darkness - Create a magical barrier around yourself, energizing you for 20 Energy instantly. If the time of the RP is night or the fight is taking place in Soudul, it energizes for 30. Can only be used 1 time per encounter.

Darkening Shadows - You darken the shadows around you to make yourself feel more at home. This allows for your accuracy to go up for 2 turns by 20 points. (ie: Apprentice accuracy is 1-50 miss, 51-100 hit. In this case, they would have a 1-30 miss, 31-100 hit.) Usable 1 time per encounter
Costs 40 Energy.

Shadow Sneak - Meld with the shadows and move quickly from one to the next. Usable across bodies of water. This can only be used out of combat.

Physical attacks

[Magic-Enhanced Strike]: Raemos strikes out with his fist, channeling his magic to do as much damage as possible with his otherwise not-optimal arms.
Unarmed Attack - 5 ENG
5 Damage per Attack point

[Sword of Light]: Raemos attacks from the shadows with his shimmering sword...
Armed Attacks - 15 ENG
10 damage per attack point

Defensive Ability

[Block]: Raemos uses his sword to block incoming attacks
Basic Defense
5 Damage warded per Defense Point

[Block and Dodge]: Raemos blocks with his sword as he dodges, avoiding most hits
Moderate Defense
10 Damage warded per Defense point

[Block, Dodge, and Roll]: As well as dodging the initial blow, Raemos also channels that movement into a rolling motion that might allow him to find an opening in his enemy's defenses...
Advanced Defense
15 damage warded per Defense Point

[Shadow Dodge]: Raemos uses his magic to become halfway incorporeal and enhance his movement. In combination with the other maneuvers, it is highly effective in preventing damage, but it is difficult to do in bright light.
Master Defense
20 Damage warded per Defense Point

Offensive magic

[Dark Blast]: Raemos throws a bolt of raw, untamed darkness at his foe. Unrefined, but effective.
Initiate Magic - 10 ENG
5 points of damage per Int point

[Choking Void]: Raemos slips his magic through his enemy's shadow and causes it to creep up their bodies, holding them and, potentially, striking at vulnerable areas.
Journeyman Magic - 15 ENG
10 points of damage per INT point

[Black Wings]: Raemos makes his magic more physical and fanciful, having it take the form of giant detached feathery wings, dragon claws, or Khehora maws made of condensed smoke and using them to crush or bludgeon foes.
Advanced Magic - 20 ENG
10 points of damage per int point + 2 points of damage per Attack point

[Transmuted Slash]: Using innovative and complicated techniques, Raemos uses his wand and sword in tandem, shoving his magic out from a sword slash in a sharp magical arc, increasing its range and effectiveness.
Master Magic - 50 ENG
20 points of Damage per INT point + 5 points of Damage per attack point

Defensive Magic

[Voidblock]: Using some of his own magic, Raemos blocks another spell, attempting to absorb it's power away into the void.
Initiate Magical Defense
5points of Damage warded per INT point

[Counterspell]: Using the natural negating powers of Oblivion and dark magic, and his extensive knowledge of magic, Raemos attempts to counter any magic coming in...
Journeyman Magical Defense
10 points of damage warded per INT point

[Voidsorb]: Summoning a flat shield of swirling, smokey nothingness, Raemos attempts to absorb incoming energy before it reaches him.
Advanced Magical Defense
15 points of damage warded per INT point + 2 points of damage warded per DEF point

[Shadow Flicker]: In an attempt to negate damage, Raemos briefly merges with shadows around him, seeming to flicker out and back.
Master Magical Defense
15 points of damage warded per INT point + 10 points of damage warded per DEF point

Tomes:

Crippling Miasma (Dark)
    Lafahz Gaolem
    The caster's hands or weapon briefly expel a thick fog that settles on the opponent causing them to drop 1 damage tier (50 to 25 or 25 to 10, etc) on their next successful hit. Can be used twice per battle.

    ENG Cost: 25

Shadow Puppet (Dark)
    Illithir Darikkum

    This tome instructs the user in manipulating their own shadow. Though the shadow is incapable of doing harm or grasping anything physical, the spell can be used for either amusement or a tactical advantage on a stealth mission.

    Notes:
    Adept Stage: Manipulate only your own shadow.
    Expert Stage: Learn to manipulate up to three additional shadows simultaneously, including your own.

Levitation (Astral)
    Fupanonai

    Levitation is quite a useful skill for the peoples of Magesc. This tome contains a handy guide to mastering the art.

    Chapter 1 covers basic control and offers tips on how to handle objects as heavy as a small sized canine (10lbs or 4.5kg). Chapter two expands a caster's skills allowing them more finesse and the ability to control multiple objects at a time as well as heavier things than before (200lbs or 90kg). Chapter 3 covers how to magically support the levitating of massive and unwieldy objects like horses, logs, and boulders (840lbs or 381kg).

    ENG Cost: 10, 25, 40

Reflection Shield (Astral)
    Lufunay Maau

    This short manual teaches the user how to create a solid shield of magic which reflects all incoming magical or physical damage once. Once cast, the shield remains up until a successful attack connects and the spell cannot be cast again that battle. Damage returned to attacker is their original damage. Opponent's block/ward do not apply.

    In a multiple vs one situation reflection shield will only reflect the attack of the first opponent to land a hit, all other successful opponent's hits that round will land as normal.

    Can be used in RP's to summon a shiny shield.

    ENG Cost: 40

Seeing Double (Light)
    Xiofu

    Create a somewhat blurry illusion made of light partially over your body making there appear to be two connected versions of you. Lowers enemy accuracy by 10 points for two turns. Can only be used once per encounter. (Cannot be stacked with 'Blinding Light')

    Can be used in RP's out of combat as well.

    ENG Cost: 25

Basic Conjuration (Conjuration)
    Webilu Luonilu
    A basic conjuration spell. This is a must-have before any other conjuration book. One must first master the basics before moving forward with more difficult incantations. This conjuration spell brings forth a small familiar whom looks adorable and is killed by a single damaging attack. This creature does nothing to aid you in battle and is specifically meant to bring joy and happiness (as well as a basic understanding of conjuration magic) to the caster and their allies.

    ENG Cost: 10

DMG per ATK Point: 10
Suluksati slashes at an enemy with her claws and teeth

Rake [Power Attack] - 15 ENG

Shining Barrage [Master Attack] - 50 ENG
DMG= 20 per ATK Point + 5 per INT point
Suluksati draws out the damaging aspects of light magic and attacks in a holy, shining frenzy. Her claws deal holy damage as well as being, well, claws.

Defense

Wing Shield [Basic Defense]
DMG warded per DEF Point: 5

Suluksati attempts to use her wings to block incoming attacks

Dodge [Moderate Defense]
DMG warded per DEF Point: 10

Sulusati uses her agility to try to dodge or deflect an incoming hit

Graceful Dodge [Advanced Defense]
DMG warded per DEF Point: 15

Suluksati takes to the air to utilize her superior agility when airborne. She dodges easily in midair, but can also use this on the ground by extending a jump with her wings

A Blur in the Air [Master Defense]
DMG warded per DEF Point: 20

Using a mixture of Aerial dodges and cunning deflections, Suluksati dodges and weaves her way around attacks

Offensive Magic

Magic Flash [Initiate Magic] - 10 ENG
DMG: 5 per INT pt

Suluksati uses her magic to spit out small, floating balls of bright light that explode into holy energy, but can also be used to light the way

Light Beam [Journeyman Magic] - 15 ENG
DMG: 10 per INT pt

Suluksati sends a potent beam of magical light from her mouth, which splashes into shimmering sparks upon striking an object. Though strong and fast, it is dodgable.

Light Ball [Advanced Magic] - 20 ENG
DMG: 10 per INTpt + 2 per ATK pt

Suluksati gathers her magical energy into her mouth, forming it into a ball of light, looking like a brilliant star or some such thing. She then fires this orb at an enemy. Though slower than the light beam, she has some control over its trajectory, and it can curve slightly to hit a moving enemy

Purge [Master Magic] - 50 ENG
DMG: 20 per INTpt + 5 per ATK pt

On touch, Suluksati can force her magic into a body. This requires a lot of magic, and can be used for healing purposes. However, with offensive intent, it can be nasty as light energy ravages through their system. She can only control it while she is touching them, and the effect ends a short while after she is out of physical contact.

Defensive Magic

Shimmer shield Initiate Magical Defense
DMG warded: 5/INT pt

Suluksati's magic shimmers around her, boosting the defensive properties of her scales and healing some of the more minor wounds

Small Ward [Journeyman Magical Defense]
DMG warded: 10pt/INT

Suluksati creates a shield of light. This can be near her, another, or anywhere in her range of vision. Its a simmering, membranous shield of liquid light.

Large Ward [Advanced Magical Defense]
DMG warded: 15 per INTpt + 2 per DEF pt

Suluksati can create a large light shield that she can place anywhere. Alternatively, she can wrap herself or another in a soothing force-field of light that helps to heal injuries as well as protect against incoming attacks

Flicker [Master Magical Defense]
DMG: 15 per INT pt + 10 per DEF pt

Suluksati can flicker into form composed of flowing nebulous light, allowing some measure of damage to simply pass right through her.

ENG: 750

---

Suluksati flew over the desolate desert, wondering if she should land and rest, or continue ahead across the desert towards the other side of Eowyn and the dark land beyond. The khehorian she sought was there, otherwise she would not dare, and the seas were dangerous and, well, wet, otherwise she would not be crossing the desert.

She was daring to tread on a land that hated her to her very soul, but did she dare stop and rest? She flapped her tired wings. Perhaps there was an Oasis nearby, to stop and drink or, possibly, eat if she felt like stealing magescan food and animals.

Which she was starting to not mind so much. It was one thing to respect the sanctity of good, wholesome, peaceful people like Avani or Sueno, but the ranchers and magescans that made their homes here on Eowyn carved their living out of dragon and khehora territory and it was becoming harder and harder to care about them.

She sighted a blue speck in the distance and flew towards it, hopeful, because she did, indeed, want to rest...

Raemos

LP: 635
ENG: 685

~~~
Raemos and his troop were resting at a small, quiet Oasis. It was uninhabited, save for a few small features that marked it as a rest stop for caravans and nothing more permanent. Raemos supposed he agreed with his Sergent's decision to rest – there was a mess of dragons reported in the area, their group had been assigned to remove them from the trading route, and they would need to be rested and at their best – dragons were not to be trifled with. To take them on unrested was to court death, and Raemos did not want to die. So, grudgingly, he approved. He still did not like the man.
Talon Sterben was an upright and loyal Guardian who had clearly earned his rank of Sergent and was respected by his crew. He was also a pureblooded Oblivionite mage who's devout worship of the dark goddess of his race was not a secret. So, of course, he and Raemos butted heads. Raemos understood why he, as a probationary Corporal, had been assigned to Talon (And honestly Talon wasn't that bad functionally), but that didn't mean he wasn't bitter about it, and didn't complain about it often to Talon's sister, Selza.
Unfortunately, Corporal Selza Sterben was not in Talon's troop – apparently she and her brother could not work professionally together without fighting, or so Raemos had heard. No, she was in Sergent Verhaan's group. Sometimes, Raemos wondered if that wouldn't be a much more pleasant – in many ways – posting. But then he remembered that Cearlan Verhaan – though an interesting man (and his boyfriend), was actually awful to work for. At least under Talon Sterben, Raemos didn't have to do humiliating things like wash latrines or fetch ridiculous things, and – most of all - Talon did not play pranks.
So he lived with it.
Speaking of the soudanite... “We leave in 5. Rest up and be ready.” called Talon.
Oh, I'm ready... grumbled Raemos mentally in response. Preferable or not, he still did not like the man. Raemos looked up at the familiar Eowyn sky and thought about his mother and sister and father. They were still in Tukyere, the ranchers of the desert managing their stock as best they could since the mara were still abroad. He understood the mara's purpose, and wished they had not gone wrong – they had the potential to do so much good, and now they were ruined and broken.
He squinted at a shape in the sky. It was white and shining. A mirage, perhaps?
No. It was a khehora...
-----
Suluksati could smell the water of the Oasis, wafting into the dry air like the scent of salvation. Her throat longed for it, parched gullet crying out for some of that cool, smooth purity.
But there was another scent on the still air. Suluksati banked, just above the Oasis, and looked down at the group of people below her.
A band of people that well armed so far from the settlements and the Mara encampments could only mean one thing.
Hunters.
She felt cold at the thought, and wondered if she should keep going and just not stop, not approach, not engage – just keep going.
But she needed water and hunters weren't going to keep her from it, and if she could dissuade them in the process... why not.
She summoned a few light balls to her and sent them down into the magescan group. “Leave now, and harm no dragons!” she called, swooping in closer, “Or you shall suffer my wrath!” She let the light balls detonate, “And this is only a portion of what I can do.”
She checked to make sure she hadn't killed them unprovoked, “And I am willing to let you leave otherwise unhindered.”
“Its attacking!” cried one of the others. They all ducked for cover as the light balls came for them. Raemos threw up a bubble of darkness and felt it reinforced by Talon's magic as the light balls, small and glowing like willow the wisps, exploded. He felt the impact of holy light and deepest dark, and felt the light become swallowed up. He took the shield down to assess “Any wounded?”
“No injuries!” came the affirming call. Good. He drew his sword and wand – his usual dual wielding posture, and looked up at the flying shape.
The voice had been familiar, bringing back memories of a discussion and a meal of Olrarik by the serene beauty of a lake. Had it really only been four years? When had four years become only? He heard the voice, he saw the glint of green among the white feathers, and he knew that he knew who it was.
That was not a good thing. Raemos also knew of the warning, and of the price on the 'protector of dragon's' head. He bit his lip and turned to Talon. “Sir?”
“Bring it down. Literally. It attacked us – lets get it out of the air” said the man. Raemos nodded, his gaze briefly following the curve of Talon's wing before looking away, stomach turning unpleasantly.
He gathered his spellpower into a familiar spell. “Lafahz Gaolem!” he intoned, sending streams of miasmic mist at the glowing shape above them as the troop drew and readied their weapons, hoping to weigh the khehora... Suluksati... down enough for her to land.
Suluksati shrieked her anger as the swirling mist clung to her and forced her down from the sky. She managed to land safely, struggling against the mist.
“Fine!” she snarled, “Then fight it is!” She strained against the heavy miasmic shadows and, rearing back with a roar, summoned a ball of light to her mouth. She fired it as she crashed down to the ground, her eyes bright and ready to fight them.
There had once been a time where she would talk things out, even now, bound and stripped of some dignity. That time had long passed and died. The magescans had had their chance.
It was that khehora – shook herself free and went on the attack, Raemos quickly countered it with a spell of his own, canceling it out with its opposite.
“Careful!” he called out, “She's powerful. Spread out – those appear to be exploding magical orbs.” He flung a raw bolt of dark magic at her, hoping to keep the khehora busy while they organized, “Sir!” he saluted briefly to Talon, “Permission to advance?”
“Granted!” said Sergent Sterben, his hands darkening with magic, “Proceed at own discretion.” Raemos looked away from the harrowing reminder that it was dark magic, Soudana's energies, that he wielded.
“Yes sir!” he said, approaching Suluksati, another spell at the ready. “Archers! Cover me!”
The confining tendrils of wispy magic melted away against the blast of holy light and Suluksati shook the last of it from her feathers. She dodged the magical blast and snarled at her attackers, wings outstretched, stalking towards them calculatingy.
It was the calculating step of a beast, a predator. She was no longer Suluksati the rational, no longer posessing compassion or logic – that was sleeping beneath the feathers of Suluksati the animal, the beast, the primal and ferocious monstrousity forged by an impossible quest.
She shimmered with holy light, snarling as one of them broke from the group and came closer.
In her altered state, she saw them not as people but as threats. Ranged threats were behind, near the blessed necessary coolness of the water. Another threat approached – it was both ranged and not. She had to deal with it quickly.
And so, without thought or will beyond the need to fight and survive and destroy, she attacked, her glowing claws leaving more than the searing desert light in their wake.
For a moment – a bizzare moment – she thought there was something familiar about the approaching figure...
Raemos blocked her flurry of attacks, feeling her claws graze his armor and cheek as he barely dodged out of the way. Now that he was up close, he could tell that it was Suluksati, for certain, but not the Suluksati who he had talked to about the philosophy of hunting dragons.
No.
This was the Suluksati that had attempted to savage his father, who had been locked in a battle with a magescan man he cared about, a battle he had had to end because it threatened to destroy them both. It had been intense, almost painful to watch in it's ferocity.
And now that ferocity was upon him. He struck out with his sword, only to be parried by a strike of her claws. “Suluksati...” he hissed, desperately, “Remember me?”
Raemos didn't expect anything. He knew rage, the furious bestial battle-drawn kind. It was not one of his traits, but he knew it well enough. He had seen it in others. They became ferocity itself, a person channeling the cruelty of a weapon, and they ceased to reason or think beyond the moment.
No... he thought sadly as he struck at her with his enchanted sword, She will not hear me. But it had been worth a try.
(Raemos's Rolls)
Talon watched as Raemos ran on ahead. He was braver than most men and women he'd known, and, apparently, able to pull it off.
Still, he shouldn't be out there alone.
"Well?" he said, turning to the actual swordsmen in the group, "Join him, for Oblivion's sake."
He turned to the archers, "Fire at will. Medrol can handle himself so don't worry to much about hitting him. Every arrow in that khehora is a chance at an opening for him..."
Of course, he wasn't worried. The cold feeling in his gut as he summoned his magic to him and sent it forth to reinforce his - grudgingly admitted - best mage was just... trail rations.
Sure.
Right.
Suluksati dodged the attack and pounced at the Oblivionite, vaguely aware that the others were approaching. She clawed at him ferociously, snapping at him with her powerful, sharp-fanged jaws. Whenever he showed an opening, hissing in threat and fury.
Her crest raised into a banner of pride and she growled at the sound of her own name. Its presence infuriated her, from its meaning to the very syllables and sounds that made it up. She roared in response and clawed his sword out of the way, charging in to bite at his unguarded arm.
It was then that she realized that he smelled familiar... Very familiar.
Like an anomaly in the Serenia sun.
A child set upon by dragons in a place he did not belong.
A child standing in the reeds, searching for flowers.
A friend.
She snarled at the thought and struck again, but her rationality stirred within her.
Did she know this magescan?
It was very clear that Suluksati could not be reached. He'd hoped for something – he didn't know what – but as she tore at his defenses, he knew that he would just have to fight her.
Suddenly, without the option of parlaying, he felt very alone out there. It was not unusual for him to be the first one forward in battle – he was armored for close-combat and did well in it, using his powerful magic and combination swordwork to soften up enemies before falling back to the middle ground to let the warriors and close combat specialists duke it out while still protecting the vulnerable long range mages and archers. He was a mid-ranger and a vanguard, and he liked it that way.
But as he fought the khehora, he wondered where his close rangers were. They should have been here by now to back him up. He heard arrows whizz down from the sky and he knew that the archers were getting involved at least, but where were his backup blades?
Suluksati's claws came too close to his less armored areas for comfort and he barely managed to parry her blow. “Suluksati, listen! Stop this!” he gasped desperately, “You can just fly away now. Please, just...” he leaped back from her scything claws, only to feel the impact of her tail. He was slammed off balance, and he caught himself on the sand with his hands, gasping at a new pain in his side.
He managed to get his sword in hand right as she pounced on top of him, her sharp teeth inches from his neck, her claws gouging into his shoulders and side. He struggled to keep her from tearing out his throat, his arms suffering as she gnawed at them.
Finally, though, she was pulled away, and he saw the glint of his ally's swords as he gasped, dazed and dizzy, on the ground...
Suluksati took her opening without remorse or mercy, biting at his neck. She could end it quickly, she knew, but he fought against her. His blood soaked into her feathers and there it was again.
He was so familiar, now. She almost knew who it was, almost.
But she didn't care. He was an enemy, a dragon hunter, and he had attacked her. She would destroy him. Destroy him. DESTROY HIM.
A little Oblivionite boy, walking along a road. He was minding his own business, carrying a package of some sort. He was out of place, wrapped in cloth and bandages, a child of Soudana in Seren's land, and yet he walked as if he was native, with no hostility or fear.
He had been accosted for no reason by the dragons of that land – a mere child. And she had protected him.
She.
Suluksati.
Had protected him.
This was him.
Something – horror, mercy, affection, compassion... she did not know – stayed her claw and she drew back before she would have finished him off. She did know this magescan.
Oh Raemos... she thought, I had hopes for you.
Then she was distracted by a troop of magescans, brandishing blades – both metal and magic – who dragged her off of him.
She shielded herself from the arrows, and parried their attacks, but the memory of that little boy on the road still glowed bright in her mind, and she no longer had the will to fight.
She flashed with a bright, blinding light and, turning into a light ball, rose to the sky and escaped the magescans, shooting Northwest once more, to the dark land.
