She was bored. When was the last time she had fun or was even noticed by her husband? He was busy teaching Viv the importance of ruling a kingdom and Tali was off slaying dragons or something. Gwenevere had expected this life, to be the mate of a king and to have his children, but she did not think that it would be so boring or that she would cease to be who she was before she became known as King Arthur’s wife. The pale mare walked toward the lake, leaving behind the courts and the politics, it was a time of relaxation, of trying to figure out who she was. Who was she? What defined her? These questions plagued her, constantly bombarding the queen until she was at a complete loss.
When she reached the lake, she looked upon the calm surface; she saw her face reflected back. “Who am I? What is my purpose?” She did not speak very loud, for she knew that one of her husband’s knights followed her. There was the constant threat of her sister, who would loving more than to see Gwenevere dead. The pale mare quickly pushed her evil sister from her thoughts, it was not worth it to dwell upon those who seek to do one harm.
Her honey colored eyes looked out at the lake, its calm cooling waters seemed to beckon her for a swim. The sun continued to beat down over head, so the offer of the cold water upon her coat was a tempting one. On a bed of moss beneath an oak she laid her crown, not wanting to lose it in the dark depths of the lake and placed her white cloth next to it, not wanting it to get soaked. With a smile she turned away from the objects she cherished most and headed toward the lake. Her hooves barely made a sound against the soft earth, soft clomp, clomp, clomp. It was meditative in the rhythm. She tried not to scan the woods for the knight, she wanted to pretend that she was in her own world, that she was alone.
The water was refreshing and it seemed to wash away all her doubts. She was who she was, and being the mate of Arthur did not change that, it only added to what was already there. Gwen promised that she would get out more and explore, meet the people of her mate’s realm and make some new friends. It was time to change and to stop being so reliant on her husband for companionship.
