There was no food to be found in the desert, again. There had been no caravans to pillage as of late either. Judah was starting to wonder if the traders had given up, or if they had just found another trade route, or if perhaps they were all dead. Each option was a possibility and just as likely as the others. Either way, whatever the reason, her food source had all but dried up, which meant she would have to venture out of the desert and into the forest for sustenance. One couldn't live on sand, after all.

As she made her way out of the desert and through the scraggly shrubs that marked the transition from the barren desert to the lush, dense forest, Judah wondered for perhaps the millionth time why she didn't just leave the desert and make a new home in the forest. Food was certainly more abundant, and don't even get started on water. There was so much water, and it was everywhere. The first time Judah had seen it, she had honestly been afraid. It had been so surreal. She had gotten used to it though, and it was rather convenient. You wouldn't die from thirst out in the forest.

Still though, it was much colder. She could feel the difference like it was a physical thing as she stepped into the undergrowth of the forest. She had been born and grew up in the desert, and even in the summer she found the temperature difference to be too much, especially in the shade. In the shade, it was downright freezing to her. Still, sacrifices had to be made if she wanted to survive. It was much better to be cold for a little while than to starve to death. Even if the chill stuck with her as she went back home, it would eventually fade and she would be alive. Starvation meant death. Death was permanent.

It didn't take long once she was in the cover of the forest to catch the scent of prey. It wasn't fair really, how full of potential quarry the forest was when there was so little to be found in the desert. She followed the scent for a while, silent and stealthy as she knew how. You had to be stealthy in the desert where you could be seen for miles. Sand dunes did little to hide you. That was another plus for the forest column: the foliage made it much harder to be seen, even with a coat as bright as hers. Her orange spots could easily be mistaken for sunlight hitting off a patch of mushrooms or flowers, or something of the like.

The prey was just up ahead. Judah could hear it crashing through the underbrush, not a care in the world. It had no idea that soon it would be dinner.

As luck would have it, Verity just happened to be tracking the same prey that the orange speckled kalona was, a hapless doe.

Verity had been out of the forest for a good few days now, and all the while, she realized how glad she was to not live in the desert. It was far, far to hot and dry for her liking, and the sand had taken a good afternoon of bathing in order to remove it all from her coat. Pairing that with a lack of a reliable food source and water, and it was all the more reason that she didn't want to visit again if she could help it. By comparison, the forest was full of both, and the trees and undergrowth were good cover if she needed it.

Picking her way quietly through the forest, Verity tracked her lunch. It had been more than a week since the last time she had hunted, and she could feel it start to really wear on her mind. She didn't know why she could eat vegetation, yet still needed meat, but she supposed it had something to do with her mother. Snorting, Verity pushed thoughts of her mother away, as she had other things to be focusing on at that moment.

This doe had been rather unlucky, as it had the misfortune of running across Verity when she had been without meat for long enough that she was willing to hunt something as large as a deer. She usually went for smaller creatures, so as to avoid wasting meat. However she had decided not to be picky, and attempted to take the doe down...Only she had missed, and only managed to leave a deep wound in it's side. Whoops. She was usually able to take out her prey before they realized what had happened to them, but her inexperience with large prey had cost her a swift kill. The doe had fled, and now Verity was tracking it to finish the poor thing off. She really hated the fact that she had caused it unnecessary suffering.
