Neued.

Biroki was back there again. He had not been sleeping well since Natsu and Viveka had left. He supposed he had gotten used to a full house while Zuri had been there and, since she had not yet returned... if she ever returned... with the girls, he had felt trapped in the beautiful place he had built for her.

He had friends, yes. And he'd had things to do other than sit and mope. But the house was a reminder that things had gone wrong somewhere, and he did not like it.

So, when he had started to hear about the strange things happening in Neued and the whispers of a new battle, he had leapt at the oppurtunity to get away from Ast and do some good.

So here he was, the spitorog familiar he had captured in a carry case on his back, his magic ready to hurt or help as needed.

Neued had changed little, he felt, since he had left it. It still had a strain on it, a sense of tension that suffused everything in it. And, he felt, there was more than before. He walked through the town towards the healer tent, where he could at least start something worthwhile...

It had been an eventful few days for Makani and after everything that he'd been through he found himself back in Neued, back in the healer tents again, helping out the patients that were left over from the war. It was a place for those who had gotten the worst injuries during the war, those who still weren't ready to head out quite yet, that still needed help for those like him to help them out. He was sitting with one of the warriors at the moment, talking with the man, a smile on his lips, when he felt someone else appear in the tent. Reaching a hand out he rested it on the warrior's arm, patting it gently, then turned toward the newcomer in the tent.

Giving a smile he called out to the newcomer, finding himself quite interested in him given the energy that swirled around him, "Hello and welcome, can I help you?" He wondered who was here, another patient, maybe? Or was it another healer come to help him out? There were still a few of them about, coming and going, helping when they could, preparing for whatever would come next. It was a fact that the Obans were out there, it wasn't something that could be denied, it was just a matter of time before they attacked again. Makani just hoped that they would all be ready for that time and would be able to keep each other safe, so that they would have less injured people to take care of.

Makani would much rather have peace, of course, but he somehow doubted that would really be an option. Both sides were too riled up, their haunches raised, and there had already been so much blood spilled. He wasn't sure if peace were a possibility and as such he could only hope for the best for their side in all of this. Not exactly something that a healer should do but he supposed that he wasn't exactly a healer, was he? He was practicing with all the various forms of magic after all, it just turned out that it was his healing powers were the ones that were needed the most at the moment.

Biroki smiled. ”I'm, ah, looking for a place to set my things down so I can get back to work.” he said, a little self-depricatingly. ”Though, o-of course, I hope there's not much work to be done.

The spitorog croaked in its cage and Biroki shifted it in his arms uncertainly. He assumed that the young man was a healer. ”Are there many injuries today?” he asked. He couldn't see if there was anything wrong with the warrior, but if there were any injuries coming in already... that did not bode well.

Makani gave a smile, thinking over the man's first question, before he said, "I would say put it wherever you can find a spot, this place can be a little cramp at times. At least there are less healers milling about of late though, so you should be able to find a place for your things." So he was another healer, huh? That was good, it helped a lot when new healers arrived to help to take some of the weight off the shoulders of those who were already here. Makani wasn't one to complain, but any extra help was always appreciated. Making a motion to those present he said, "Today we are in charge of tending to the more long term patients. Nobody new has arrived though and some are even getting near ready to leave, it's rather nice."

The problem of course being that the Oban army was still out there, still threatening to cause more injuries, something that Makani was painfully aware of now that he'd run into an Oban soldier himself. It was half why he'd been sticking so close to Neued these days. He couldn't exactly trust his senses to tell him when someone was good or bad when they could appear as good people in his mind. Of course that led him to wondering about the Obans, wondering if there were those who would rather not fight, more peaceful members of the tribe. Surely they couldn't all be war mongers right?

Shaking that thought off he said, "I am going to be checking the leg of one of our patients, to see if his cast is ready to come off. Did you want to join me?" He asked, turning back to the man that he had been working with, helping him to sit up before handing him a water skin to drink from.

Biroki found a place easily enough – fortunately, most of what he had brought, aside from Nem'ker the spitorog was supplies, which he quickly set aside to be put away when he had the time. Which, it looked like, he would have a lot of.

“Just long term then? Good.” Biroki agreed that it was rather nice. “I'll come along... I-If, of course, you don't mind...” he said, following Makani. It was a good first order of business to see what was going on and get a sense for the lay of things, since he had not been there in a while. A walkthrough would be informative, a walkthrough with a guide would be more so.

“I am Biroki, by the way. I'm a Sage, but during the battle I was in here, organizing things and such... any supply shortages I should, uh, know about?”

"I don't mind at all, help is always appreciated." He said as he helped his patient ease back on his bed, giving him a smile, "You just rest up, you will be back on your feet in no time." He reassured the man, adjusting the blanket, before he turned his attention back to new comer, "There isn't as much to do these days, which is nice." There was far more to do during and just after the battle, nothing that he really wanted to think about at the moment since it was only bad memories. Best to think about the present and those who were getting better and back on their feet he thought to himself.

"It's good to meet you Biroki." He said, moving forward slowly, magical energy flowering around him in a manner another magic user like Biroki might be able to pick up on. It was through magic that he was able to get around by himself, using it to feel out the world around him. Giving a smile as he walked he said, "My name is Makani. Oh, you're a sage? Wow! I am only a mage myself but I am aspiring to me a sage one day." He knew that it would take a lot more work on his part but ti was still something that he could aspire to one day. Maybe when he was stronger there would be more that he could do to help those around him? At least he really hoped so.

Once he arrived at their patient's bed side he gave a smile, "How are you feeling today? Ready to be back up on your feet?" He asked of the man, leaning over so that he let his hands over above where the man's cast, getting a feel for what was going on under it with his magic.

The man sat up, watching as Makani inspected his wound magically, before he said, "I'm feeling much better and yes, I am ready to get back out there." The man seemed determined to get back to the battlefield, something that always surprised Makani when the various soldiers said similar things.

Biroki stared at the boy, having sensed Makani's outflow of energy. A mage? Then he should be careful - that was destructive magic they used! What was he doing with such a burst of uncontrolled magic?

If Biroki released his energy in an aura like that, he'd cause a firestorm and burn the whole town down.

Though wary, Biroki – after some seriously rude staring – could tell that this was not as volatile an aura as his own. He wondered if the mage just had a hard time controlling it? So long as it was harmless, even though it felt like the equivalent of a low growl to Biroki's magical senses, Biroki decided he would try not to care.

Biroki distracted himself from the boy's presence by inspecting the patient from the sidelines. ”Whats the injury?” he asked, letting the boy do his thing. Two people inspecting with magic at the same time would only yeild a lot of magic and no results.

Seemingly oblivious to the way that Biroki was starring at him Makani merely continued with his inspection of the man's wounds, "His leg was broken in... what was it, two or three places?" He asked of his patient as his hand moved from side to side, allowing his magic to sort of ping off the wounds, allowing him to get a feel for what it was that he was dealng with. Things were feeling a lot better, save for the scars that the man would likely always have due to where his injuries had been at their most severe he felt that he would be able to walk fine despite everything. The fact that he had been able to help was something that had him smiling a bit.

The guy watched what Makani was doing for a moment, chuckled, then looked up at Biroki, "I got clipped by the tail of one of those giant monsters that the Obans were riding around on. Not even a real attack, just a graze, but it snapped my leg like a twig. They have some serious creatures on their side but at least we are ready for them this time, right?" He looked to Makani and asked, "So, can I get this cast off? It really itches under there."

Makani gave a soft laugh before nodded, "I think that it's time to free you of it, yes." He said, then turned to Biroki, "This is something I will need your help with. We will need to cut his cast off but I think it would be best if you did that. If you don't mind that is?" He asked of Biroki, smiling up at the man, his eyes remaining ever closed and fox like.

Ah, those monsters. Biroki had seen them at a distance. ”Yes. At least we are.” he appreciated the man's confidence. He smiled, ”If he says you are, then you are...” After all, the boy was the man's regular healer. Youth or not, there was no substitute, his uncle had taught him, for knowing the patient. He nodded at Makani.

“I d-dont mind. Not at all.” in fact, he was honored and... wait... Biroki squinted suspiciously at Makani. Why were the boy's eyes closed? ”Uh. All right.” he said, taking up a pair of healer's shears, ”I'm cutting it off now.” he said, beginning the careful cutting. It was fairly straightforward, and the man's leg was soon freed. ”There.” he said, putting the now-loose cast aside, ”I don't recommend r-running on that leg from the start, but it...” he glanced at Makani before catching himself. He was, after all, the more experienced one here, and he had to act like it. ”Should be fine.”

Makani gave a bright smile as Biroki agreed to remove the cast for their patient's leg, something that helped him out imensely as it meant he wouldn't risk any sort of accidental harm to the man. It had him thinking for a moment that perhaps he should see about getting himself an assistant... but he'd think about that sort of thing later. For the time being he already had Biroki who was, in his mind, more then perfect since he was a magic user of a class even higher then Makani himself. He felt a touch bad thinking of him as an assistant since he was higher ranked but for the time being that was at least what he felt like. Maybe he'd be more take charge once he got used to everything?

Once the cast was off, and Biroki warned their patient not to run around straight away he gave a nod, "And you might want to see about getting a bath so that you can clean yourself up. You've been in the cast for a while after all." He suggested, before holding his hands out to the man before him.

After getting helped to his feet the guy shifted in place, testing the leg, before giving a nod, "I will be careful and I am most definitely going to get myself cleaned up. I won't be catching the eye of any of the ladies smelling like I do after all." He lifted a hand, giving them a wave before heading on his way, obviously eager to get back to things.

Makani turned to Biroki once more and asked, "Shall we check up on the others?" There were a few more to look over with a range of injuries, all needing their attention and care, all of which Makani hoped they would help to get back on their feel soon.

Biroki watched as the patient moved on, but what he noticed was how Makani's behavior was slightly... off. It was hard to tell, but Biroki had seen it before: the odd angle of the wave – just off from where the man was, the way the boy's eyes could be open or shut at any time, the way movement was used...

Was the boy blind?! That would be... different. Biroki wanted to ask him about it and confirm, but he knew Dyakida: she didn't like to be reminded of her blindness. She didn't make it clear that she didn't like it, but when Biroki had been young and oversensitive about upsetting others, he'd noticed it.

So, he just pretended, for now, that he had noticed nothing at all. ”Yes. Are they all long term patients like him?” he asked, ”Either way, I'm happy to help. That's wh-why I'm here.”
PostPosted: Thu Nov 06, 2014 2:18 pm

Makani smiled, turning toward where Biroki was, listening to what he was asking before nodding, "It will be nice for all of them to be able to leave, some are just not as close to being ready as others to getting back on their feet." It was a shame really, for such strong people to end up in such a condition over something so pointless as war. It made no sense to Makani, but then again he was never a really aggressive person. Maybe warriors better understood the draw of something that caused such a mess?

Walking along, between the cots, checking on the patients he said, "There are a couple that have still yet to wake up. With them we just have to give them a light healing session, to keep their bodies strong, for when they come back to us." He had hope that they would wake up, they just needed time was all. He gave pause when he came to that part of the tent, where a trio of warriors, two men and one woman, lay still and quiet. They were breathing, but that seemed to be the biggest sign that they were still alive.

Makani gave a soft sigh then gave the group a gentle smile before he said, "The three of you really do need to wake up, there is a lot out there that you're missing. Did you know that someone went out and gathered some rather delicious fruit, if you want some I will get it for you." He said to them as he came to sit down next to one of them, reaching out to take the woman's hand in his. He gave it a squeeze before motioning to Biroki come join him, "We have a new friend with us today, a sage even, that means he's even stronger then I am! He's going to be working with me today, I hope you don't mind? His name is Biroki."

To Biroki he said, "I like to talk to them, they respond sometimes, sometimes you will feel their hands flex, or they will shift ever so slightly. So if you want to talk to them, hold their hands, things like that while we heal them you should."

The three patients here disturbed Biroki deeply. He supposed that they would disturb anybody. To sleep and never wake up... that was a truly upsetting fate. They almost seemed trapped within their breathing bodies, not quite alive.

He watched as Makani went about his greeting to the comatose men and woman and decided that the young man was a better man than he. Biroki didn't think he could handle their silence very well. He smiled wanly at Makani's introduction. Now he didn't have a choice – he couldn't run away from them. And he was grateful for that.

”If it helps...” he murmured, sitting next to one of the men and holding his hand, sending his healing magic dancing through him – fixing the muscles, strengthening the atrophied limbs... there would be only so much Biroki could do: half of healing magic was from the patient's own will, and their will – if they had any – was buried deep inside, beyond anybodies reach. ”H-he's right, you know. Theres all sorts of new supplies coming in. If you wake up now...” he smiled, uncertainly, ”You can try them b-before they get scarce...”

Nothing. What healing he could do done, Biroki patted the limp hand awkwardly. ”Well...” he said, ”Maybe later.” He retreated back to Makani, watching, almost guiltily, as Makani made his compassionate minstrations.

Makani tilted his head, listening to Biroki as he spoke with the man that he'd sat down with, giving a smile as he did. It was nice to have another helping him out with these particular patients. He knew that there were some healers that didn't give them as much of a chance as he did, he wanted to do all he could for them, to be there when they woke up, and meant to keep trying. To have Biroki aiding him was a nice change of pace. Giving a smile he said, "Thank you, Biroki, it's always nice to have another here to chat with these three with me."

Giving the patient he was sitting with a smile he said, "Biroki seems quite nice, doesn't he? He's right too, there is a lot to try if you wake soon. Not to mention that it seems calm at the moment, that means if you wake up now you will be able to rest up for a while before you decide what you want to do next." He would make sure that nobody tried to push them in one way or the other, not wanting them to be forced back into action after what they had gone through. He'd make sure that they were protected if at all possible though he knew that the word of one mage might not be enough if push came to shove.

Makani gave a smile when he felt then weakest of twitches of the man's hand, "Yes, there you go. I can tell that you will be the first to wake, you're getting so much stronger these days. I look forward to when you finally wake to greet me." He told him, squeezing the man's hand, "You rest up now, I am going to check on the others, alright? Good man." Rising to his feet he walked passed Biroki, patting him on the shoulder, before he settled down with their third and final coma patient, taking her hand in his, and started to speak with her as well, "Good afternoon. How are you doing today? Feeling ready to wake up, perhaps? Now would be the best time to do so, what with a pair of handsome healers waiting to attend you."

In a flash, Biroki realized what unnerved him so about the coma patients. Sen'oda he remembered. It had only been because of her brother that she had pulled through. But she had slept for years! What of these people? Would they be years in waking? Would the others give up on them before then?

Biroki realized that he already had. He bit his lip, lingering at the man as Makani moved on. He touched the hand that twitched. ”Wake up soon...” he whispered, ”I've... seen it happen before. You can do it.”

Hastily, he caught up with Makani, enough to catch the last sentence. ”... I wouldn't say I'm that handsome.” he joked shyly, ”But I'm not ugly.” he managed a weak smile, ”At the very least she'd enjoy you.” he commented. Not him. He was taken. Or, he hoped he was.
