Paired Item: Chopsticks (hair, any of the series)
Where to Buy it: Global Imports
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Rat

Ah, you wish to know about these chopsticks? I know they well shine in the light well, but you must know that is not why I keep them. Long ago, but not quite as long ago as the many stories she would come to tell me, grandmother took me in.

I began my first lesson the night an uninvited guest came into the house. Sleeker than these chopsticks, a small blur passed over my plate, and I screamed and rose to attack the furry thief. However, a wiser hand grasped mine. She told me I would only scare the rat more if I threw things at him.

Convincing me to share her plate, I frustratingly dropped piece after piece of food from my chopsticks. "Patience" she said, showing me the delicate way she ate. "If you rush, you'll miss all what's around you, watching out for you, child."

I quietly finished my meal, and the room so calm I scarcely noticed the rat leaving, without any prompt to do so. That night, she began telling me about the spirits that watch over us. With her wise, gentle words I drifted to a calm sleep, not quite understanding her words but comforted by the thought these guardians she spoke of.

Paired Item: Tall Paper Lantern White (Only, do not use set)
Where to Buy it: Global Imports
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Cow (The black and white pattern on the lantern)

What kind of stories did my grandmother tell me? Well, she started with her own most mischevious stories first, I think to win my attention. In childhood, she'd been light on her feet and she'd watch and warn fellow youths of an adult coming to catch them. First there where just moments stolen away from a chore, or the innocent gathering in a place one should not be. However, the more grandmother had forewarned them of danger, the more reckless a few became.

With sweet words and hollow promises, they'd lure her out again and again. Once, they'd dared to wonder out on her family's farm land. Ducking under a fence, they chased glittering lights as they danced between blades of grass. The fireflies were not alone, as a few dozing bovines
she knew well. As she held the lantern, she watched the cow's asleep face. The long snout and large eyes she'd found oddly adorable. How often she'd been treated to the fresh milk and stroked the soft fur of the animal as a thank you. She stood there holding the lantern as always, and saw the poor asleep creature fall to it's side.

Her friends cheered, and motioned to another of the cows. As tears stung her eyes she set the lantern down, quietly padding away. She couldn't stop them, she said, but she could no longer help them.

I asked her what became of these friends, she said the lantern knew better than she.

Paired Item: Tiger Slipper (series)
Where to Buy it: Global Imports
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Tiger

I will never say a woman can't be tough. My grandmother sweet as could be, I'll never forget the day she was the terror of the shoe store.

I clearly remember the scene. She'd had a long, hard day at work but still insisted we go and purchase some new slippers. She'd walked in a striped shirt, confidently asking for a fitting of a comfortable and stylish looking slipper.

The salesman didn't give her a second look. Patient as always, my grandmother sat and waited. And waited, as more and more other customers were helped and the salesman ignored the woman who just wanted a simple pair of slippers.

Finally, after an hour, my grandmother broke, and for once in her life, made a ruckus. The salesman stood there, frozen in his cowardice until manager came over. Not sure what happened to that rude employee, but the manager, finding out the situation, gave my grandmother the slippers.

Walking home, I said nothing, but my grandmother sighed and told me, "Most times, you treat people with kindness. However, if you never use your claws, people will forget you have them."

Paired Item: Carrot Basket
Where to Buy it: Buttercup Cafe
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Rabbit

I camped with friend down near a lake the summer when I was ten. My grandmother had me dress warmly in the cold nights. She teased me my coat was made out of fur at first. I about cried! I could never imagine wearing real fur. I told her the spirits would be upset if I were to do such a thing.

She laughed. Perhaps because it was the first time I acknowledged her stories about spirits. Is it odd for a child not to acknowledge there's rabbit living in the moon?

However, in the dark cold woods alone, you'll admit just about anything to get back to your warm campsite. To this day I won't collect firewood. Lost, tired, I talked to the moon. Yep. A nice full moon, and every time I said something I heard a rustle. Desperate, I followed it each time.

I swore I followed a white cotton tail out of those woods. You can think me silly, but every time I meet a rabbit, I give them a carrot just to be safe.

Paired Item: Any Goldfish in a Bag
Where to Buy it: Global Imports
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Dragon(Seahorse for a fish story)

Of course, there's a story behind this one too. When I was six, Grandmother asked me if I wanted a pet: I told her I wanted a seahorse. Laughing, she asked why. I told her my name was Ryu and I wanted a dragon for a pet. A seahorse was the closest I was going to get. She said I would have to meet my new pet in a different way. I didn't realize what she really meant was that I was going to 'catch' my new pet.

At the festival, I tried again and again to catch a fish with a paper scooper. I was about in tears, thinking I'd never befriend a scaly creature with the flimsy paper.

"May I?" A voice asked me. Not much taller than me, but certainly a boy's voice, I nodded. The kid had a hood on, and didn't wear the traditional festival clothing I'd been in that day. I tried to peer at his face, but I had to look quickly to the hands that where gloved, which swiftly caught a goldfish! I opened my mouth with wonder and caught a glimpse of the boy who looked back at me. I swore the light glimmered gold across the boy's face. Before I could think, he placed the prize into my hands and ran off.

I'm pretty sure I met a dragon that day. I said nothing, holding the bag in my hand.

Paired Item: Any Philosopher's Cache
Where to Buy it: BiFrost or get one from DD
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Snake

The bearded man with silver hair and bread always drew interest in the streets near my home. The man, while a common presence, seemed to appear and vanish out of thin air. He was unmistakable once out of hiding. He wore clothing possibly aged as he, with more satchels on him than I thought one person could possibly tied on themselves. The children whispered stories about him and I held the belief that he was one of the guarding spirits my grandmother would tell me about.

I heard one story about the bearded man holding a pixie in one of the satchels. Another told me gems. Another said he kept souls and was some sort of grim reaper! At one point I think he was keen on scaring off the neighborhood kids. The stories grew more and more outlandish but it was also whispered that he never revealed the contents of one particular satchel nearest to his chest.

Having no fear of strangeness, I politely introduced myself to him. Then, bluntly asked him what he held closest to him. Surprised, he told me. "My friend likes to keep warm. You won't get scared if I show him to you?"

I was terrified, but I was this far in, so I nodded quietly. A tiny little garden snake, slim as my fingers was curled up asleep inside of the guarded satchel.

Then he gave me one of his satchels. "I come across these all the time. You sometimes never can guess what you'll find inside!"

Paired Item: Any Comb
Where to Buy it: Barton Jewelers
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Horse

I think I was the only one to know my best friend loved horses. She kept a refined air about her, always dressed to impress. Only upon entering her room filled with fabrics, make up, and endless dressing and cosmetic fun, did you see the horse dolls lined up on a shelf.

I thought at first, she only wanted to use me like a doll. After all, I was a simple girl, and she had more than she knew what to do with. "Never", she said one day, "Not dress like the best version of yourself. You never know if you might run into your worst enemy. Always stand confident."

I always think of that when I wear this comb she gave me.

Paired Item: Yarn and Needles
Where to Buy it: Junk in the Trunk
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Sheep

Grandmother always took good care of me, and once I was old enough to, I set out to make a gift for her. I quickly purchased yarn and knitting needles, thinking I could make something for her. Socks or even a scarf! How hard could it be?

The tangled mess I created was unsuitable as any argument of clothing. There were so many errors and poorly formed stitches, I was in tears the night before. In fact, I'd so poorly done it, when I gave it to her, her face didn't change. Then she laughed.

She unraveled the mistake and asked me to wind it back into the ball it once was. She complimented how the wool I'd chosen was a soft and sweet as a sheep. "I'd like it better if we did it together anyway."

This year, I'm working on a whole quilt based off what she taught me.

Paired Item: (Any Carton, Milk, Juice, etc)
Where to Buy it: Buttercup Cafe
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Monkey

In school, everyone knew of Tseng. He climbed everything. We reasoned he never wanted to touch the ground. Particularly found of scaring me death by surprise, he'd drop down every time I didn't think to look for him.

One day, this monkey climbing obsession came to serve me well. I came running through the school courtyard as some older kids had seen me by myself and thought they'd make my misery their fun. Winded from running, I stopped at the tree. Suddenly, Tseng lifted me up into the branches. He covered my mouth as the leaves concealed us, and the bullies ran off.

The hero-like image was completely shattered as he sipped on a juice box.

Paired Item: Any Hibakama
Where to Buy it: Global Imports
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Bird (Chicken)

My first trip to a temple, I noticed the entrance nearly lined by the local birds. Many flew around, almost like guards, but always landed back on the entrance post.

My grandmother led me around the temple, which was lovely and lovingly kept. Still, my curiosity got the better of me. Especially since I tried following some of the birds to no avail.

"Why do the birds do that?" I inquired of one of the Mikos. "They fly around but then they just go back to the same place."
"I'm not sure. The birds here are our friends, but they sure like the entrance post. I think," She said leaning down to tell me, "they like being able to come back to the same place as long as they do it on their own."

Paired Item: bento box
Where to Buy it: buttercup cafe
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Dog

Every day, at lunch, there was the sweetest dog you'll ever know that stood guard at my school's playground. Even though I was told I shouldn't, I shared some of my lunch with the sweet creature.

Definitely a mutt, but in the blood I knew there was noble breeding. My school's favorite visitor, every day, he'd come by, and sit watching us as we played. He was scruffy and usually dirty, but he received kindness from nearly all the students. Everyone tried to give him different names, but "Poochie" won over.

I followed Poochie to his home one day, curious. I followed him all the way to a humble home, to where a kind voice greeted me. "Are you one of Koma's friends?"

Koma the dog was the pet of a newly retired school teacher. Since the mutt was just a pup, he'd follow his master to school. Now as his master had retired, the dog still made the journey everyday, protecting the playground in the stead of the former educator. Every now and again, I'd visit with an extra bento box, to visit Koma and his owner.

Paired Item: Honorable Teapot
Where to Buy it: Housing Store
Zodiac Animal Correlation: Boar

The winter before I finished school, grandmother took care of me most diligent when I came down with the flu. She served me cup of tea after cup of tea, insisting I keep myself warm.

Admittedly, I was old enough to listen to the wise words of my caretaker. However, my brain took in the words a bit muffled under my fever. I thought she kept asking if I wanted boar treat or something. "What's boar...treat?"

She laughed, "Boar, tree. You're running headfirst into trees like a boar, dear."

"Wha...?" I asked through my feverish haze.

"You're trying to go too fast, again." She said over and over again. "You'll keep tripping and running into things if you don't find your own pace. Drink your tea."
