Shakuntala had set out to the building for a trim. She was getting clumsily annoyed with the edges of her hair tickling the base of her neck; her locks having grown out since her time at the compound. But, when she entered, there was a shriek of pain. The girl immediately connected the cry to herself and wondered if her mere appearance was frightening, but realized that couldn't be the case when there was a few drops of blood near her feet.
Shirking back, her eyes widened and rose to a mauve-haired trainee clutching her hand in agony. Her friend had wrapped her arm around her other after commanding her to press a towel to it, and then dragged her out of there before Shakuntala had more time to bear witness to what could've been, to her, equivalent to a murder scene. After one of the other trainees scrubbed the drips of blood away, he rose his eyes to level with the copper-skinned girl's, and then popped up with a smile on his face.
"I didn't expect to see you so soon," he said warmly. "Stacie there had a little accident and needs some care. I was gonna freak out there for a bit with having an open spot and all, but since the replacement's here, I don't have to worry."
Shakuntala blinked. What as he talking about? Replacement? She was a replacement for what? "I-I-I d... d-don't...." she stammered out, but she was too shaken up to say a word.
Her body language and obvious nervousness seemed to go over the male's head. "Hey, come on in, and here you go." The male tugged her in by the cleft of her jacket's elbow sleeve and forced a pair of hair-cutting scissors into her hand. He then maneuvered her to the chair where Stacie had cried out in pain. "And here's your seat; you're all set. Trainees'll come to you, no need to wait around. And, by the way, thanks for stopping by. We're really busy today and having the extra help is lifesaving."
Shakuntala looked on in horror to the male, the scissors in her hands, and the empty chair in front of her that is soon to be filled with a bottom. In all honesty, she would've been fine with helping out even if they were informed they had the wrong person. The fact that struck her most was: Shakuntala knew nothing about cutting hair.

Today, Zin had been assigned hair-cutting duty. Her experience started and ended when she was about seven years old; she had gotten her hand on a pair of scissors and, in a fit of rebellion, had cut huge chunks out of her own hair because her mother had insisted that she wear her hair down "like all the other little girls." After that, her mother had not complained about her daughter's strange fixation on pigtails. But Zin felt fairly confident in her abilities today. Cutting hair couldn't be very difficult, could it? Not if she was just giving people a trim, anyway. Haircuts in the military didn't have to look perfect; they just had to be efficient. Besides, the idea of being handed control over another person's appearance sure did sound like a lot of fun. When Zin walked in the door, she was slightly taken aback by the number of people waiting for a haircut. She hadn't arrived a minute too soon. A fellow trainee approached her, smiling and asking, "Haircut, or just a trim?" "Um, I'm here to cut people's hair, actually," Zin said. The trainee blinked. "Hm, that's strange... the replacement for Stacie already arrived..." He put a finger to his lips thoughtfully, then smiled. "Well, we certainly need all the help we can get today. Here's a pair of scissors, and come with me; there's another chair free." Zin followed the trainee, and he directed her to a barber's chair right next to Tala's. Zin smiled brightly. "Tala! You're here too? I'm so glad that there's someone I know here," she said gleefully. "Let's give it our best shot! Hopefully we won't cut anyone's ear off! Haha," she laughed, oblivious to the gruesome scene that Tala had walked in on earlier.

There was an impatient tap in her foot; as if she were preparing to suddenly toss the scissors aside and break out into a jaunty dance to, "Hello! Ma Baby," sans top hat and cane. The jitter in her settled somewhat when someone called her nickname. Turning her head, a pleasing (and somewhat thankful) smile spread out over her lips. Never did she think she'd also see Zin there. She gave the younger trainee a little wave in greeting.
Hiding her chagrin at Zinnia's joke with a small wince, she chuckled it off nervously, and replied, "Y-yea... Wouldn't... W-wouldn't want that to happen, ahaha..." That didn't stop the terrible image of someone clutching their ear and screaming as Stacie did from popping up in her mind. Then the tapping began again.
Bowing her head, she willed her body to stop as she glared down at her limb. Suddenly, a trainee entered and took a seat in her chair. After a moment of no words, she snapped her head around to Shakuntala, and frowned.
"Hey, ya gonna start cuttin' or what?" she asked impatiently.
"O-oh..." Shakuntala blinked. "I... S-sure? What do you... want?"
The girl flipped her unruly hair of curls over her shoulder. "Just a trim," she replied, "don' take off too much!"
"I... Right," Shakuntala replied. Holding up the scissors, she gently grasped a bit of the girl's locks and frowned. Well, here went nothing...

Before Tala had finished with her first customer, another trainee walked in and sat in Zin's seat. "Hi!" she said with pep in her voice, "What can I do for ya?" "Just a trim," the trainee said with a slightly nervous smile. "Okay, sure!" Zin said. She started cutting his shaggy hair bit by bit, but it quickly got boring. She picked up a larger chunk of hair to make it go by faster and... snip. "Oh no!" she cried, staring at a large patch of scalp that stared right back at her. "Hey, what are you doing?!" the trainee demanded. He leaped out of the seat and twisted and turned, trying to see the damage the blue-haired girl had done. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Zin apologized as he stormed off. Maybe it was just beginner's luck or maybe she had a hidden talent with a pair of shears. Bit by bit, Shakuntala pruned the trainee's curly locks until she was standing in a puddle of hair down by her feet. Taking a mirror off a nearby table, she handed it to the trainee, and quietly awaited the girl's curses and screams.
"Hmmph," the girl harrumphed in thought, patting a hand on the top of her head. "Not bad! Give 'em my regards, yea?"
The girl walked off after giving Shakuntala a nod. She smiled to herself after watching her off. Well, that went off without a hitch, eh? Her face fell to a gawk when she noticed Zin had balded a poor guy.
After he stormed off, she asked, "Are... are you o-okay?"
Just then, a male that smelled of high heaven sat on the chair in front of her. And, surprisingly enough, it wasn't Martino. "Trim," he said in a matter-of-fact tone. Shakuntala could only stare at his greasy locks as she pinched her nose between forefinger and thumb. Ew, ew, ew.

"Uh, yeah..." Zin said, a little disheartened. "It, uh... It didn't look that bat, right?" She sighed. "I guess he could just shave it all off and grow it back..." Her musings were interrupted by a girl taking a seat in Zin's chair. Either the girl hadn't seen what Zin had just done, or she was very brave. "I want it quite a bit shorter, but not too much-- about this high," the trainee instructed, using her fingers to demonstrate the length she wanted. "Oh, and give me some bangs, please!" Zinnia gulped; this was a lot more complicated than a trim... Well, if she was going to make up for the previous disaster, it was now or never. Unfortunately, she couldn't seem to get the hair even. She trimmed more and more until-- snicker-snack! The trainee gave a scream and dashed away, leaving Zinnia to stare miserably at the steadily growing pile of hair on the floor. She really wasn't cut out for this job after all. That girl couldn't exactly shave her head and start over without getting a few stares, either. Shakuntala shook her head swiftly. "N-no, no, no, it, um, it looked f-fine?" she responded in-between picking up bits of the male's locks between forefinger and thumb and clipping at them as quickly as she could. Touching the trainee's hair was like stuffing her hand in a bowl of spaghetti; squishy and absolutely gross. Again, she happened to give this guy a rather good trim and he left without a word of thanks. Honestly, Shakuntala didn't need any; if his BO was so bad, she didn't want to know what his breath smelled like.
She froze at the trainee's shriek as, once again, Zinnia seemed to have balded another poor head of hair. "Ah, ah..." Shakuntala moaned in sympathy as she looked to her friend. "It, um, I... D-don't worry, it was just a... m-mistake?"
As she tried to reassure Zinnia, a girl took the spot where the male had once been. She turned her nose up at the trainee; the lingering scent of the before male a light miasma still about her seat. Despite giving Shakuntala the stink-eye, she commanded, "I want my hair to be beautiful! Wash, trim, and style! Right now!"
The copper-skinned winced. Ugh, must've been the daughter of a noble.

"Yeah, you're right," Zin said, cheering up immediately. "I just need a little more practice, that's all." Unfortunately, the trainees waiting for haircuts had heard the scream of Zin's latest victim and were reluctant to take the empty seat. Finally, a brave boy stepped forward. "Just a trim," he said, smiling kindly as he sat down. Zin took up the scissors once more, game face on. Snip-snap!"Is this the new style going around?" the trainee joked as he examined his new bald patch. "I kinda like it." He laughed and hopped out of the chair, showing off Zin's handiwork to his friends, who also laughed. Soon tales of Zin's incompetence with a pair of scissors would be all over the compound. She sighed heavily. "Why did I get duty for this?" she moaned. "Well, at least he took it well," she added more brightly. Chartreuse ringlets curled between Shakuntala's fingers as she gently massaged the trainee's lathered scalp. The trainee in her seat never once took her eyes off the copper-skinned girl; as if testing her for any slip-ups that could immediately send her stomping off to Santos (not that the man would care, but the girl seemed like a total himedere the type that would stress any means to get her way). Fixing her straight back up, she wrapped a towel about the girl's head, and let her locks dry as she glanced at the gaping hole left in the male's hair as he showed it off to his friends.
Well, at least he was nicer than the rest of her client...?
She smiled to Zin's sentiment. "Y-yea..." she replied, "M-maybe you can practice o-on something? L-like an animal-" Her mind immediately thought of Zinnia's running between stalls chopping off horse's manes and braiding their tails in the most ridiculous of styles as she laughed enthusiastically. She suddenly lifted a hand and shooed away the thought swiftly as if any more imagining would bring the scenes to reality. "No," she said bluntly, "a-animals are a bad, bad idea..."
Her current client snorted, alerting her that she should be working on her instead of idly chatting with another trainee. Shakuntala thinned her lips and returned to the girl. She gave her a basic, careful trim and, while there seemed to be no difference in her appearance, the girl was satisfied.
"Hmmph," seemed to be her thanks as she left.
Realizing she had no more clients for the time being, Shakuntala leaned against her chair and tilted her head. "H-how about, I, um, show you?" she offered the pigtailed girl. "Y-you could watch me and... a-and maybe pick up something?"

"Yes, please..." Zin said glumly. She abandoned her chair in order to get closer to Tala. "I don't know what I'm doing wrong," she complained. "I try to just take off a little, but then I guess I hold the scissors wrong and... Well, I didn't think that hair was so complicated!" She sighed heavily. "Thanks for helping me, though." She gave a small smile. "You're so good at everything, it seems like! You're great with horses and haircutting..." Somewhere deep inside, Zin was jealous of her friend. Nothing came easily to her at the compound, except perhaps making friends. She always had to work her way up to competence and-- though Zinnia herself was hardly aware of it-- it hurt her to see others master various tasks seemingly without effort. But her cheery attitude was unstoppable. "Once you show me how to do it, I'll be great at it! I'll definitely get it right, I promise." She was quite earnest, taking this perhaps a bit more seriously than she should.

Shakuntala hid her small blush at Zinnia's compliment behind a pair of pearly whites. Just like Zinnia, there was a tinge of envy on the copper-skinned girl's end as well. She wished she had the enthusiastic spirit to learn through mistake and tackle every obstacle with whimsy and smiles. Instead, she tended to shirk back at the introduction of critique and internalized blame when things went wrong. They were certainly traits of herself she despised to the extreme.
Waiting around for a bit, a new client shifted himself into her seat. Unlike her previous visitors, this one seemed a little more kosher in her presence.
"Just a trim," he said to Shakuntala, "especially the bangs."
"O-okay..." she replied as she stood in front of him. Despite her offer, Shakuntala was nervous because she was now being studied by two pairs of eyes. She prayed not to mess-up before Zinnia.
Shakuntala squared the male's bangs, giving her a bowl-headed look, before working her way around the back and keeping the ends level. After a few snips, he was done, and seemed passively acceptable of his haircut as he turned his head about in the mirror offered to him.
"That'll do," he said with a nod to her, "thanks."
She nodded in return as he left, then turned to Zinnia in expectation. Was she a bad teacher? Did it work out in the end? Did he look terrible? They were answers she wished to know and also to be kept secret at the same time.

Another girl took a seat at Zin's chair. The pigtailed barber gulped and tried to remember the techniques that Tala had shown her as she took up her scissors once more. "I'd like a pixie cut," the girl said. Zin became very nervous; this was not going to be a trim like the style Tala had shown her. She started out very hesitant and conservative, taking her time about cutting the long-haired girl down to size. She stopped continuously to show the trainee her progress, and each time Zin's customer would ask for her to cut it shorter. Finally, Zin had it at a passable pixie cut length and was evening the edges when... Zin inhaled sharply. She'd done it again. The girl made a face as she examined her bald patch in the mirror. Thankfully, she did not yell at Zin, but rather left without a word. Zin let out a long sigh. "I guess it isn't something you can learn right away," she said. "It'll just take practice, but I'll get there." Even if I have to scalp half the trainees here, she added silently. At least I haven't cut anyone's ears.NaomiNaomi 1: Zin takes off just a bit without much change. 2: Zin takes off a decent amount. 3: Zin takes off a little too much. 4: By the Walls, there's a large bald spot on her head.

"Oh... O-oh my..."
Shakuntala looked on in horror as Zinnia seemed to, once again, bald one her next client. Her mouth drew open in a wide O before she clamped it shut. She was glad no yells were exchanged (she believed the predicament would only escalate if they were), but the silence by the girl could only signify her anger. Shakuntala was prepared to apologize on the twin-tailed girl's behalf, but the trainee left before she could.
Her plan to have her haircut suddenly seemed like a very, very bad idea. Nothing against her friend, but she wasn't willing to risk the possibility of a bald spot just to have a few inches trimmed of her hair. Stepping over to Zinnia, she placed her hand upon the younger trainee's shoulder, and gave her an encouraging smile. "B-better luck next time?" she tried to say in a moment of comfort, but realized how awkward such reassurance was. Swiftly trying to change the topic, she asked, "Are... a-are you thinking of c-cutting your hair?"

"No," Zinnia said miserably. "I like my hair long. I'd just need my bangs trimmed from time to time but I think they're fine now... I... I should give these scissors back before I mess up anything else..." She stared down at the formidable pile of hair on the floor. How was it even possible for her to mess up that badly that many times? People would think that she was doing it on purpose. Those people whose hair she'd just cut would hate her for this-- with, perhaps, the exclusion of the boy who'd taken it as a joke. She would become famous across the compound as the girl who can't be trusted to cut hair. That wasn't the sort of reputation she'd been seeking at all.

Shakuntala wasn't sure what to say and could only soothe Zinnia with another pat to her shoulder. Despite wanting to assure her that getting her bangs trimmed would certainly make her look nice, she hoped she wouldn't do it herself. Removing her hand from the girl's body, she let it droop to her side and stepped back to give her the chance to gently return the scissors and hopefully not poke someone's eye out. Maneuvering over to her spot, she began to clean up by sweeping the heaps of hair into a dustpan and signalling to the boy who forced her into the job it was ready for dumping.
By the time she finished, the trainee rose her head to the sound of the dinner bell. The dongs resounded loudly in the pit of her stomach as if provoking the feeling of hunger from her. Taking a step in the direction of the exit, she nodded her head towards the male to signify that she was leaving, but she stopped when her maroon eyes fell on Zinnia.
Beckoning her over, she asked, "H-hey, Zin, wanna... w-wanna get something to eat t-together?"
