What the hell is this thing?!

Puffing and panting, Silas Bright ran through the alleys of Destiny City, trying to shake off his pursuer.

Said pursuer was a very, very big youma with very, very sharp teeth. It was canine-like in appearance, so it could be mistaken for an 8-foot-tall wolf; however, it had three tails, each with a sharp, claw-like appendage at the end. Furthermore, it had two horns on its head that curved backwards.

Silas was starting to hit the wall energy-wise. He knew that he'd be toast if he didn't change tactics soon, so instead of trying to lose the beast that could sniff out his every move, he pulled out into a more open space and looked around for anything he could use as a weapon. He scrambled a few feet away and grabbed a particularly thick tree branch. It wouldn't do much, but surely it could at least buy him some time before someone else came?

The creature made its way into his view, and Silas shouted as loud as he could. "Is anybody out there?! Does anyone know what this thing is? Someone, HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLP!"

Hope this is good!

After all the recent mayhem in his life, it was unusual for Babylon to take a night to patrol all on his own. Still, tonight had found him wandering alone, and there was a certain tranquility to be found in solitude. His new uniform was made of some sort of smart material that was more breathable and lightweight than his old furs, which made patrolling during the summer far easier - shortly put, he was enjoying himself.

A cry rang out through the night. Babylon sensed no powered signatures nearby, whether friend or foe, but he did feel a fairly strong youma. The scream had been human. There was a civilian in danger nearby, he deduced, springing into motion.

Luckily, he'd been close by when he heard the cry, and he found both youma and victim in short order. Leaping from the roof, Babylon slammed into the youma, rolling with it for a meter or two. It was - s**t, he realized, twisting to avoid one of its tails. It was huge!

"Better get back!" he yelled to the civilian, rolling out of the way of the second tail as it slammed against the ground. Babylon pulled himself to his feet and called his lantern to hand, swinging it like a mace. Surely this youma had some sort of weak spot - right?

"Gotcha!" Silas dashed out of the way, still clutching his tree branch for dear life. The youma hit the ground with a growl and attempted to catch Babylon with one of its tails. The lantern swing connected with the youma's side, and it roared from the impact; if youma bruised, that would leave a mark. It got back up on its feet with a little scrambling and difficulty, then lunged at the new attacker at full force. If Babylon didn't steel himself for impact or dodge, he would probably be knocked down and placed in a very vulnerable position.

Not too far away from the ruckus, a metallic, brass-colored scale hit the ground with a loud clatter. Silas flinched reflexively, then looked over to where he had heard the noise. "What was that?!" he said. Something had landed over there, but what was it? He was unsure as to whether to go investigate or not; it could herald the approach of another enemy. In the end, he stayed put, hanging a good distance away from the battle so as to avoid drawing attention.

Oh, to be equally as agile as a chaos monster from deep within the rift! Babylon, however, magical powers or no, was only human, and he could only recover from throwing his weight at a youma so quickly. The beast, on the other hand, wheeled around, ready to strike.

Babylon had no idea what kind of vision this thing had, but he was going to count on it at least partially relying on it. He brushed his fingers over his signet ring, and his appearance became staticky. Then, he did his very best to dodge, the youma crashing to the ground awkwardly behind him. Babylon turned on his heels, lantern raised for another attack, when he heard the clatter.

Out of the corner of his eye, he aw the pair of scales hit the ground by the civilian. Page, he thought, realizing exactly what he'd stumbled into. "Pick that up!" Babylon yelled. "It's like - loot!"

And then he turned back to the youma, readying his lantern for another swing. As he lunged forward for another strike, he could only hope the boy did as he was told.

The youma took the hit solidly to the face and reared up in pain. It reached a paw out to swipe at Babylon rather clumsily; it wasn't likely that it'd be able to hit the Knight.

"Loot?" Loot normally meant riches and upgrades obtained from some sort of dungeon. Right now was not the time for Silas to puzzle out why he needed to grab the thing that fell a little ways away, of course. All he knew was that he needed to follow this guy's orders and just grab what he now recognized as an old-fashioned scale. "Right! I'll go get it!"

As soon as Silas touched the chain connected to the scale, something happened. He felt a tingle go through his body, and he was surrounded by a bright light. When it faded, he had changed; his favorite vest-suit had been replaced by what appeared to be a part of a toga, an undershirt, and standard boots and pants. A voice echoed through his head:

I pledge my life and loyalty to Mars, and to Glitnir.
I humbly request your aid, so that in return I may give you mine.

"Mars? Glitnir?" the newly-awakened Page said, not loudly but still audibly. He wasn't in the state of mind to notice the change to his wardrobe; that'd have to come later. After a glance at the scales, he got an idea. He spun the scale around like a flail and charged toward the beast, aiming to conk it on the head with his swing.

Babylon let out a possibly-premature whoop of victory and leapt backwards from the youma. Its claws scraped through the cloud of pixelation that surrounded him, but fell just short of hitting the knight's actual body. He darted quickly backwards, giving himself some time and space to maneuver in, and tried to think of how to reach a killing blow. Had the eyes been weak?

The appearance of a new power signature told Babylon more or less all he needed to know, although he did not know exactly who he was dealing with until the page of Mars charged past him, scales swinging.

The attack connected solidly, with a mighty thunk, and the youma stumbled backwards as if concussed. Though still ferocious, it seemed to be weakening. "Awesome!" Babylon yelled. "Great hit!" He revved up his own weapon, spinning his lantern in circles on its chain, and charged forward again. Hitting the head and the eyes had worked so far - so that was what he aimed to do again.

"Thanks! I think we've almost got it!" Silas didn't know what was with these scales, but they made a surprisingly good weapon. Babylon's swing sent the youma reeling, and it stumbled and fell to the ground. Whirling his scales above his head, Silas brought it down on the fallen beast's head, and it jerked once in pain. It was clearly on the ropes; one more hit would most likely do it.

Silas provided that last hit as he ditched the spinning act and just plain swung the scales over his head. He swung once, then again, and the youma roared one last time before crumbling to dust. Breathing heavily, he stared at the lump of dust. "Is it over?" After a pause to confirm whether it was over or not, he added, "Thanks, man. You saved my life. Really!" Now that the action had settled, he finally was able to get a good luck at his rescuer. A white coat, a cape, fur trimming... what a strange getup. This guy must have been sweltering. Unfortunately, Silas did not realize he was also in a strange getup now.

The youma shattered to dust, and as it did, the tension eased out of Babylon's posture. Should such a day come that youma could re-form themselves on the spot, they'd all be ********, but so far dissolution always meant the fight was over. "Yeah, it's done," he said, dragging the back of a gloved hand across his brow. Turning to the page, he added, "Good job for your first night out."

Encouragement! It made the world go round.

Anyway, brand new page. He'd dealt with this a couple of times - enough that, by now, Babylon was feeling decently confident that he could handle all the primer stuff. If three years on the job didn't qualify him for that, then he had no idea what did. "So," he said cordially, "I'm sure you have some questions and I think I can go through them in order. So, that was a youma. It's pure, concentrated Chaos energy wrapped around something so warped that it's human the way gelatin is an animal byproduct. They cause trouble, and destroying them is a kindness."

"You're a page, I'm a knight, we serve Order, and it's basically the light side of the Force. I'm sorry, but there's no undo button. You can power down to your civilian identity but you can't ever get rid of the magic completely," explained Babylon, rattling through all the things he wished someone had pulled him aside and told him as a newly awakened page. "Your uniform's in the style of Mars, so that's where your Wonder will be. Have you, by any chance, got a sense inside your head of what your name is right now? Like, not your legal civilian name, but your Name? Like, I'm Babylon, pleased to meet you."

"Wait, wait, wait, slow down!" Silas was still trying to get his mind to stop spinning. When Babylon mentioned the uniform, he looked down and let out a "What?!" of shock. "Where are my clothes? I mean, this is... interesting, I guess, but did the youma take away my clothes too?" He took a deep breath and ran one hand through his hair to settle himself. "Okay. So. I'm a 'Page' now? I can see you're a Knight, I guess, but... what's this about a Wonder?"

After a pause to think, he covered the name issue. "When I touched the scale, I thought I heard someone say, 'I pledge my life and loyalty to Mars, and to Glitnir. I humbly request your aid, so that in return I may give you mine.' So... maybe my code name is Glitnir? Or Mars? Anyway, it's nice to meet you, Babylon, which I'm guessing is your code name and not your real name. I'm Silas. That's not my code name." He wasn't still entirely clear about what what happened, but a little levity couldn't hurt.

"You're Glitnir, then," said Babylon with a nod. The words of the oath were as familiar to him as breathing. Maybe, he decided, he'd gone a little too quickly through the explanation - but there was a lot to cover and doubtless the page would pick some things up on his own through experience. Everyone else had, after all. "We don't use our civilian names in the field. It's dangerous. You have a magical glamour keeping anyone from recognizing you."

He hated to bring terrorists into this so soon, but he realized it might be the only point of reference Glitnir had. "I'm sure you've heard about the terrorist menace plaguing our city?" said Babylon, trying to retain some levity. "Well, that's us. But it's okay, because we're the good guys! We've just got, like, super bad press." Seriously, it was the worst.

"Anyway, we're Order, we fight Chaos. The Negaverse and the Dark Mirror. You can tell they're bad news bears because they have names like cartoon super villains." Seriously, nothing good ever began with the prefix Nega.

But he'd sort of skipped a major question. Wonders! Babylon loved Wonder talk. "Your Wonder is the source of your power. It's a place that, in the past, you would have been sworn to protect. I'm Babylon of Mercury, so my Wonder is a city on Mercury. You're Glitnir or Mars, so yours is a something on Mars." He couldn't presume to know what, exactly, but he could at least tell Glitnir how to get there.

"If you focus and say that oath you repeated just now," explained Babylon, "It will take you there. You'll just sort of - feel it pulling. It wants you to find it."

"Glitnir, huh... It's not a code name I'd have picked by myself, but I'll remember it." When Babylon mentioned the glamour, the newly-christened Glitnir added, "A glamour? That's helpful. I guess I can't go home like this, then. To power down, do I just... think about it, or something?" Yes, he had heard about the terrorists, if only a little. "I saw that one special about the senshi and the Negaverse, but I wasn't paying that much attention to it. I must have either been doing homework or falling asleep. Or both at the same time." Babylon's quickness to assure they were the good guys elicited an arched eyebrow of mild suspicion from Glitnir; why so quick to assure him he was on the right team? And was Order and Chaos the accepted names of each side, or was it just Order's terms for the teams? "If you say so. It's some really bad press, though. Sounds kind of messy, if you ask me."

Then came the most exciting part: the Wonder talk. "A something on Mars? And I can just go there with that oath? That's really neat. I might try it out when I've got some spare time." He was serious about that. If this place "wanted" him to find it, he would go seek it out. He wasn't sure what to expect, but he had been thrown into this strange situation, and he was going to go all the way with it. It would be a fun way to spend a day, at least.

Babylon shrugged haplessly; there was only so much he could explain in so many ways before it just became old hat. Glitnir would pick up more from experience than he would just from standing here talking, and at least as far as combat was concerned he was off to a good start. "None of us choose our names," he told the page. "We're just... some of us inherit them from our ancestors. Some of people carry them over from past versions of themselves. It's complicated."

With regards to wonder visits, he added, "You should definitely go check it out, and while you're there, look for a ring sort of like this one. And as for losing the getup, just visualize yourself letting go of it and you should go back to normal. It's a voluntary muscle, you just have to find it. When you need the outfit back, reach for your scales. They'll be waiting just past the corner of your vision." Or that was the best way he knew how to explain it.

If they lingered here too long, they were going to draw exactly the wrong kind of attention. "Right now," he said, "You should go home, and I'll send you a message tomorrow with this." He tapped his ring. "And give you more information, okay? Right now if we hang around, we're going to attract trouble."

"That thing sends messages?" Babylon's warning cut Glitnir's flow of questions off. "Right. Gotcha. Two people standing around in clothes like ours will definitely draw attention." He tried to do what Babylon had mentioned and imagined himself 'letting go,' powering down and transforming into his old self. The scales he was holding onto disappeared, and with a glimmer he was back in civilian clothes. "There we go. Much better! If I run into anymore trouble on the way home, at least I know what to do now. I'm gonna head off. Thanks one more time, Babylon." Yeah, he might have been thanking him a lot, but there was no such thing as too much thanking someone who had literally saved your neck.

After a look around to make sure nothing else was lurking, Silas headed off for home. He was looking forward to that message from Babylon tomorrow, and he would try to set a day aside to travel to his Wonder sometime soon.
