Name: ERGO SUM

Augmentation(s): Like the others of the inner circle, ERGO SUM is augmented to stay young despite his age. His sense of sight and smell have been augmented to see and hear much further distances than a normal wolf or human. His body has been augmented to constantly be in flames and thus long range attacks are extremely ineffective against him. His biggest augmentation is the actual removal of his soul. This allows him to completely bypass any effects caused by madness, any attacks that directly attempt to destabilize his wavelength and any attacks that are supposed to cause any kind of irrational fear response. The current whereabouts of his soul is known only by Saint Clara and a few select scientists.

Age: Suspected to be between 104 and 107.

Reason for being in The Machinist Order: ERGO SUM was captured in the wild and used as a test subject for augmentations on animals and their effectiveness as weapons against non-humans. Although the ultimate result of the program was a failure, a handful of successful test subjects were kept to continue serving The Machinist Order. Ergo Sum is the most prominent of these and the only one that is a part of Saint Clara’s inner circle. Besides Naomi, ERGO SUM is the only other Machinist that has ever actually saved Saint Clara’s life.

Bio: ERGO SUM is the result of an earlier research project undertaken by The Machinist Order known as Project Advent. Seeing the potential of augmentation in humans, some Machinist scientists theorized that the same could be done with animals except for much cheaper and much more quickly due to the lack of need for safeguards. Project Advent was the first and only attempt to put this theory to the test. All kinds of animals were bought or captured from across the world and brought to the Mobile Headquarters for testing and augmentation. While the scientists knew that augmentation could take a mental toll on some humans they didn’t realize that it caused irreversible mental damage to almost all animals either quickly killing them or driving them so insane as to be unusable as foot soldiers. After several rounds of testing the project was deemed ineffective and not worth the cost and was subsequently scrapped. However, a handful of test subjects did survive the augmentation process with their minds intact. These few subjects were quickly put to use in the field and overall the scientists were impressed with the results. The most effective of these test subjects was the wolf that would become known as ERGO SUM.

ERGO SUM served many years as an unnamed experiment sent into the field on various missions. He was deemed to be the most successful and the strongest of the subjects and thus was sent on the most challenging missions giving him even greater experience as a fighter. This went on for several decades before an event happened that would propel the augmented wolf straight into Saint Clara’s inner circle. One night Saint Clara was in her room on her own, having dismissed her bodyguards as she prepared to sleep. Little did she know a highly paid and highly trained assassin sent from a still unknown source was waiting for exactly that moment. ERGO SUM was sleeping in his cage several levels down when he managed to catch the scent of the assassin and his malicious intent. Despite ERGO SUM being ordered to stay in his cage for the night, he took the initiative and chewed his way through the titanium bars in the several hours that it took the assassin to reach Saint Clara’s palace.

ERGO SUM quickly followed, his lack of need for stealth and his faster speed allowing him to cover the distance between himself and the palace much more quickly and his uncanny senses allowing him to efficiently follow a trail that was already hours old. When the assassin snuck into Saint Clara’s room, ERGO SUM was less than 60 seconds behind him. Saint Clara suddenly woke up to a black ball of fire that came shrieking into the room, slamming straight into the assassin from behind and knocking him flat on his face. ERGO SUM uncurled himself immediately and rushed onto the assassin, tearing out his throat with one swift bite. Wiping the blood off her face and getting to her feet, it only took Saint Clara a few seconds to realize what had happened and that the wolf had most likely saved her life. Even more importantly, he had done so in a spectacularly brutal fashion. Before the guards had even arrived to clean up the mess, Saint Clara had decided that such a cunning and aggressive creature should have a place within her inner circle. She asked the wolf what its name was, not really expecting a reply. But she got one. ”ERGO SUM.” This is the only reported instance of ERGO SUM speaking aloud and no one has ever witnessed him do so since. Although the other Machinists were unsure about Saint Clara’s decision to make an animal part of the inner circle, their concerns were quickly put to rest after ERGO SUM demonstrated how capable and dangerous he was as an opponent. His name comes from the second half of a famous Latin phrase: “Ergo Cognito, Ergo Sum.” I think, THEREFORE I AM.

Abilities: (Up to 8 )
1. Dark Rocket: After focusing for a moment ERGO SUM is able to curl into a ball and launch himself towards an opponent. This does not require movement on ERGO SUM's part and he can go from a standstill to incredibly high speeds in less than a second. A successful hit will often stagger an opponent as well as cause severe burns and ignite any flammable substance it touches (most notably clothing).

2. Soul Tracking: Once ERGO SUM knows the soul wavelength of a person (either from encountering them directly, visiting a location they’ve been recently or encountering an item they’ve been in contact with) he is able to track their soul wavelength from incredible distances. He can track them through physical distance, changing dimensions and even across demon/witch realms.

3. Death Bite: This ability automatically comes into effect whenever ERGO SUM lands a successful bite on an opponent. The bite wound will begin to leak black fire, causing intense pain and physical damage as well as draining an opponent of stamina until they are healed from it.

4. Black Howl: When Ergo Sum howls a blast wave is released from him in every direction, causing blurred vision, an intense feeling of shaking and loss of balance in opponents who are hit by it. This ability extends about as far as a large room.

5. Void Walker: When Ergo Sum truly intends to stalk someone without them being aware of it, he uses his Void Walker ability to cause any wavelength and resonance force he would normally project to vanish without a trace. This is in addition to his standard invisibility that causes him to become invisible to the naked eye as well as muffling sound and blocking smell. With this he is completely invisible to any attempt at tracking wavelength or resonance force. He cannot attack while in this state, though he can attack immediately after leaving it.

6. Affective Invisibility: This is ERGO SUM’s standard invisibility ability. It allows him to become invisible to the naked eye as well as muffling sound and smell around him. He does still cause a slight bend in the light where he stands however, and it is theoretically possible to spot him if one has any kind of special ability to do so. This is unless he is using his Void Walker ability in tandem with this.

7. Incendiary Shift: Breaking himself down into flames, ERGO SUM is able to vanish in an instant and appear directly behind or to the side of his opponent. He cannot use this move rapidly and in succession; there must be at least a 10 second break between each use.

8. Manifest Flames: Considered one of ERGO SUM’s most dangerous moves, ERGO SUM is able to burst into flames and shoot towards an ally. Once he reaches his target ally he covers them in flames, or rather he IS the flames that cover them. Any attacks they do will deal additional burn damage, the effects of ranged attacks will be greatly reduced as the flames will attempt to intercept them. Any physical contact with the flames surrounding the ally will cause damage as well and best of all, the ally on whom the flames are manifesting themselves gain access to all seven of ERGO SUM’s other abilities.


Personality: ERGO SUM never talks though he always listens. It’s not uncommon for others to forget he’s there even when he’s standing in plain sight. When not in battle he generally doesn’t associate with his allies and keeps to himself, not causing any problems or getting involved in internal squabbles if he can help it. He never seems to hold grudges or take anything anyone says to him or about him personally. This is true both in and out of battle. In battle ERGO SUM is intensely focused on the target, so much so that he can often forget about everything else that is happening unless his attention is somehow called to it. He battles ferociously and seems to show no fear, only stopping when his target is dead or he is called off. He never talks or responds to questions, taunts or threats from his opponent.

1. ERGO SUM used to sleep in a cage but since his introduction into the Inner Circle of the Machinists he has been allowed to sleep wherever he wants. He usually sleeps on one of the soft carpets in the Estate Rooms.

2. When Becky was a small child she once pulled ERGO SUM's tail. ERGO SUM turned around and bit her on the hand. Unfortunately he did so in the presence of Naomi. This led to a sudden massive battle in the middle of Saint Clara's throne room while Saint Clara was holding court. Needless to say, court was interrupted because of the fight but also because Saint Clara couldn't stop laughing while it happened. Naomi won.

3. ERGO SUM likes to be scratched behind the ears, but will only let Saint Clara do it.

4. ERGO SUM has been known to howl at the moon on occasion. He has never said why.

5. ERGO SUM wasn't actually the Alpha Male of his original pack, but if he ever went back he could (and would) easily take that place.
