Kili lay on his side resting in the shade of a tree. It may have looked like a common occurrence to outside viewers but it was no afternoon nap. Kili shook and groaned pressing his head against whatever he could to try and distract himself from the pain on his chest. It had been a little scratch, that's what Kili had told everyone when he and his brother had returned from Bilbo's...with Bilbo. It had come from a skinchanger in feline form. Kili had been boasting then as his uncles and mother sent for the best healers in the settlement. It had been almost fun recounting how he and his brother had saved Bilbo from the half-crazed feline. They had wisely left the presence of the elf out of the story. Kili had never even gotten her name.
He never would now. She would be long gone back to her own forest or else out hunting the beast that escaped. Kili sighed shakily. It was a shame that she couldn't have come with them. He could have shown her the apple orchards the dwarves tended to. He was certain she would have liked them. Bilbo did and elves liked things that grew. He sighed again, thinking of the elf was a better distraction than beating his head into things.

Fili watched his younger brother struggle to stay still with a deep frown on his face. He'd gotten worse in the last day, in the last hour even. None of the healers' tricks seemed to be working at all. They had all been optimistic when the healers had first seen to Kili's wound. They had been assured that it would heal completely in a week or two and Kili would be as good as new. None of them had warned of the infection that had taken hold of his brother. Fili had personally kicked one healer out when he had had the gall to say that Kili's fever was nothing to worry about. Clearly they had everything to worry about since nothing any healer tried seemed to be doing any good. The bacteria on that cat's claws were worse than anything Fili could have imagined.
The healers had left for now with Frerin to brainstorm other cures to try, combinations of herbs they hadn't applied yet, anything that would help. Their mother had finally fallen asleep after countless nights of poor or no rest and their uncle Thorin was off dealing with his duties. Fili stayed. He couldn't leave his brother. This never should have happened.

Kili opened his eyes and looked around searching for a specific face. Everything was just a little too bright but Kili still managed to find who he was looking for. "Fili..." He said drowsily to call his brother over. "Do you...do you think she would have liked...apples?" He asked furrowing his brow. Everything he was saying sounded strange.Fili immediately moved closer to hear his brother better. Proximity didn't help much, everything he was saying sounded a bit slurred. Had the healers given him something to try and make him sleep? "Who, Kili?" Kili smiled sleepily. "The elf...at Bilbo's... She'd like them...right?" He asked before closing his eyes again. He didn't open them again and his breathing evened out slightly, his breaths were still too shallow to be comforting.Fili watched as his brother dozed off suddenly leaving him with no doubt that the healers had drugged him. He only hoped that the sleep would actually help. "Everyone likes apples." He said softly not wanting to chance dragging his brother out of sleep. He needed that more than he needed those healers hanging around.
Fili stood quietly for close to an hour stuck in thought. The elf. Fili hadn't given her a second thought since they'd returned home now Kili had put her in his mind and she wouldn't leave. The elf...-------------------------------------- It was a bad idea and it was almost certainly treason, any yet Fili still found himself running up the side of the mountain towards Bilbo's former vacation home. That was the last place she'd been seen. There wasn't much hope in finding her but he had to try. Elves were renowned healers and that one had brought the skinchanger baring down on them to begin with. She owed them for helping her get rid of the monster. She owed them. Fili just had to find her before time ran out.

After the skinwalker fled and the dwarves had left Tauriel had returned to her forest. The woods had felt different to her though. It was still her home; these were still the same trees that she had grown in. They were still the same caverns that she patrolled. Everything was the same except for perhaps her. There had been a time when she never would have disobeyed an order and now she had done it so many times that she had lost track. She had gone walking beyond her forest and had seen the world outside and being back inside the trees where no light entered or escaped...she felt like a stranger to her own world.
Perhaps it had been that feeling that had brought her outside the forest yet again. She hadn't been badly scolded last time but she didn't imagine these excursions were going unnoticed. At some point she would find herself in a very serious amount of trouble but she found that only bothered her a little bit. There was more good that could be done outside of the forest rather than within, one day her king would realize that.
As fate would have it she ended up back in the same place that she had lost the skinchanger she had been trailing. The same place where she had met her first dwarf. She'd grown hearing about how foul and greedy dwarves were meant to be and of their thick hair and short, bulky bodies. The two she had meant had not quite matched the descriptions she had been given. They had been short and heavily muscled, yes, but they had not been covered with overgrown hair. Their willingness to fight she had witnessed firsthand but she hadn't seen anything of their greed. It had seemed that they were only visiting a friend on that day and they had been attacked for it. There was nothing greedy or foul about that.
They had not invited her to accompany them to their home like they had with their friend but Tauriel would not have gone even if they had asked. Their kind had no love for theirs and her kind cared not for their ways. Even if she had been invited she would not have been well received.
She came to a stop by the entrance of the small cave where the fight had taken place. There had been a small rock slide here, just enough to make everything look untidy and treacherous but not enough that the entrance was sealed. The place looked empty, like someone had taken everything out and Tauriel didn't know if it had been the proper owner, friends, or simply scavengers passing through. Still, there was something sad about an empty, ruined home.
As she was looking over the empty cave the sound of hoof steps approaching quickly drew her attention. She pulled a dagger out of a pouch and slipped into a fighting stance with ease. Whatever was coming she would be ready for it.

Fili came out of the trees in front of Bilbo's former residence and froze for a quarter of a second before moving for cover. There was someone else there. From behind the rock that he had selected for shelter he shifted until he could get a look at whatever was there. His jaw hung open at what he saw. It was her. The same mare that had come fighting the skinchanger, the elf. It was such good fortune that there was no way it was truly happening.
Fili stepped out from behind the rock entirely so that she might see him. "My brother's sick." He said. Fili wasn't sure why he had chosen those words to greet the mare. Saying hello or even simply naming her would have been more appropriate. He didn't know her name, though, and he wasn't in the mood for pleasantries. Fili was there on a fool's errand that seemed like it would yet bear fruit and he would be damned before he let his brother die wasting any more time than he already had.
"Will you help him?"

The tension in Tauriel's slim body faded away at the sight of the golden, dwarf stallion. He was in no fighting stance and even if he had been Tauriel would have been able to handle a solitary dwarf. She could sense no others in the area and it seemed he had come with other business in mind.
"He is sick?" She was unintentionally parroting the other's words as her mind drifted back to the moment they had first met. The darker of the two that had gotten hurt, that was surely the brother he meant. Though another was certainly possible. Tauriel studied the dwarf's face carefully. She saw nothing but truth in his eyes, truth and worry. It was not like dwarves to seek aid from others, especially not her kind. This was neither a joke nor a trap, she could feel it.
"I will do what I can." She said resolutely. What kind of creature would she have been to turn her back when others needed help. She was far from her home with no stern orders from her king to hold her back now. Tauriel was free to do everything in her power to provide aid to those in need.

Relief washed over Fili along with a strong sense of dread. What he was doing could be considered treason but it was too late to worry over that now. His brother was more important than their uncle's grudges or ambitions. Getting himself out had been easy enough. Getting her in and past the watchful eyes of everyone looking after Kili wouldn't be so easy.
Fili cast the elf a stern look, he hadn't come this far to turn back now. "Stay close to me and don't let them see you." He warned. Fili would be in trouble for sneaking an elf in. The guards would probably kill her though. With his warning delivered he set off at a pace that could only be considered reckless. He needed to get her back quickly.

Tauriel was no fool and did not mistake the clear warning in his words and eyes. This was dangerous, there was no mistaking it. They would have to take the utmost care that they wouldn't be caught or there would be no end to the consequences. She nodded her head to signal that she understood the severity of the situation and then followed after him as he barreled off down the slope, through the trees, and towards what would likely be anything but a warm reception if they were not careful.

-------------------------- Kili slept fitfully on and off for many hours. He couldn't be certain how much time had passed nor was he fully aware of what had transpired even in the times when he was awake. He couldn't tell what was dream and what was real. The worlds of the waking and sleeping seemed to blur together, such was the nature of fevers. He thought that his mother had come to him late in the afternoon with cool water for him. A giant version of Onar had been carrying it in his paws but that seemed strange even to Kili's fever stricken mind. He was sure she had stayed by his side for many hours though, watching over him and rubbing her muzzle against his neck and forehead.
She wasn't there now. Kili's eyes were open but he wasn't sure if he was awake or not. The world was dark and hazy. He could see a warm light flickering in the distance. He thought it might be a forge fire but he couldn't be sure. There were no forges on the royal estate. He lifted his head slowly even though it made his chest burn to try and get to the bowl of water that had been left for him by the giant raccoon. He grit his teeth against the pain as long as he could but that was only long enough to get a sip of water before his head dropped and upset the dish.
He didn't try to move away from the water even as it soaked into his mane and coat. The chilled liquid felt good against his heated skin and he didn't want to hurt himself shifting again. He wasn't even sure that he could. Kili inhaled deeply and stared into the light. Where was everyone? His mother, hadn't she just been there? When had his brother left his side? He had been there the entire time hadn't he? What of his uncles? Wouldn't they look in on him? Even Bilbo was nowhere to be found. Why was he alone?

It was late at night by the time Fili returned with the elf. So far they had managed to pass the guards unseen. The heavy clouds that blocked out the light of the moon helped their cause. Once they managed to pass onto the royal estate Fili relaxed somewhat. So long as they didn't run into Thorin he would likely be able to convince the occupants of the private plot of land to turn a blind eye. They were all family and friends here and while he would likely get lectured by his mother if she caught him Fili knew she would also share his desire to help Kili at any cost.
Taking care to keep his footfalls almost as light as the elf's (it was scary how quiet she could actually be) Fili led them towards the center of the area where Kili would be. Several tense minutes passed before Fili finally spotted his brother exactly where he had left him. "Kili!" He whispered urgently as they drew closer. He was alarmed to see that it looked like someone had dumped a bowl of water over his brother in his sleep. Then he noticed that Kili's eyes were open and looking at him. "Kili, I've brought help."

Had he fallen asleep again? Or had he simply never woken up? Kili watched as his brother ran up to him silently and beside him...? Kili narrowed his eyes as the tall creature came to a stop alongside his brother. As he looked upon her the moon came out from behind the clouds bathing her in a bright white light. Kili's mouth hung open as he recognized the mare. It was the elf. The elf that had helped them. She was glowing.
Kili blinked slowly expecting the brilliant light that enveloped her to fade, but it didn't. "I'm dreaming..." He said almost mournfully. It couldn't be her. She was miles away from them. He only wished that it really was her. Kili's mouth closed and formed into a frown before he also closed his eyes. It was only a dream.

Tauriel was alarmed to see the exact state that the dwarf, evidently known as Kili, was in as the moonlight chased away the shadows. She had seen the wound when it was fresh and knew now that she should have insisted on healing it then. She had heard rumors that the claws of felines held the cause of terrible sickness before but she hadn't believed them until now. The wound was bright red, swollen, and festering. On top of it was some unusual concoction of herbs she'd never thought to use in healing and judging by the look of the wound it wasn't doing much good. The way his speech slurred as he said that he was dreaming did little to reassure her. That he couldn't tell the difference between reality and a dream at all was frightening enough.
Her grey-green eyes turned to the golden stallion that had brought her there. She nodded briefly to him before stepping over to his injured brother with graceful haste. Things had escalated too far for plant magic alone to work; she needed something far more powerful. Slowly Tauriel lowered the point of her horn to the injured stallion's chest and focused on the power within her. She could feel it blossom forth and she began to chant in a language few outside of her people knew. It helped her focus the energy and direct it where it needed to go and that was into eradicating the infection.
She was not so powerful that she could heal the wound entirely but if she got rid of the disease his own body could do the rest. He would live.

If it was a dream Kili didn't want to wake from it. She was so close to him now that he could smell her. When she bowed her head he could feel her long, fiery hair brush over him like silk. She started chanting in elvish, which was strange because Kili didn't know elvish and it didn't make sense that he would dream in it. Kili found that he couldn't care less about the strangeness of it all because the pain in his chest was slowly giving way to a steady warmth like standing next to a newly lit forge.
As she continued to chant Kili felt his eyelids growing heavy again. "But I'm dreaming..." He thought to himself before drifting back into a sleep blissfully free of pain.

Fili had never seen an elf work at healing before. If we were to be entirely honest he'd never really seen an elf at all before. He'd only heard about them from stories told to them by their mother and uncles. The elves were half of the reason why the dwarves had been forced so far from their home. The other half was the invading dragons.
So far this elf wasn't living up to the stories. She had not betrayed them. The way Kili looked to have fallen into a blessedly peaceful sleep said that she had actually helped them. She hadn't even asked for any payment but Fili wasn't certain he should trust that that would always be the case. He watched her closely and when she seemed to be done he allowed himself to speak.
"Thank you..." He said softly with some hesitation. This was not a situation for which he had been trained. "I am in your debt. As is Kili." His eyes focused on his brother. Already the injury looked better. The red was fading away and the swelling was going down. She had worked a miracle but it was not miracle enough that it was safe for her to remain there. "But... you must go. Now. Before someone comes." It was rude to say the least, but it needed to be done.
