The sun in all its brilliance rained down what heat it could, with not even a cloud in the sky to give brief respite. Galacie stared blankly ahead, her pale skin smartly hidden under swaths of cloth. A mental note was made to purchase a proper hat at some point, one with a large brim. The suspicious glances she received went unnoticed as her eyes darted across the street, trying to find the grocery store.

The training compound had food enough, sure, but their lack of chocolate was disturbing. She was in her second year as a trainee, and had taken this weekend trip to town more than once before, but this was the first time her usual place had run out. It certainly didn't help matters in how she dreaded having to make such a trip during the summer. Desperate measure had to be taken though.

She sidled across the street, pausing in front of the billboard; Galacie could never resist reading new information.

"You, you there." A man's voice came from behind, which was easily ignored. There was enough daily hubbub that the voices tended to blend together and were naturally tuned out.

"Hey, you busy?" The voice persisted, a tap on her shoulder finally pulling her attention. "This here is my flyer."

He tapped his finger on the billboard, a paper advertising a need for cooking assistants. Had he known the level of her chef skills, he likely would have paid her to leave. As it was, he seemed to have a particular mix of urgency and vivid excitement, sweat dotting his forehead, "You get paid for your time, get to play with food. Don't get an opportunity like that often eh?" He winked. Or perhaps he was trying to blink the sweat out. Either way, any person with a drop of common sense likely would have bolted just by the sheer creep of his sales pitch.

Galacie shifted as she remembered her manners - it was rude to not partake in a conversation. "Oh, uh, I was.. looking for chocolate, good sir." And oh how stiff her conversation was.

"I've got plenty! This way, this way! Invite a friend if you've got one." He had broken out into a grin, then seemed to peer past her to eyeball the next set of hands to drag in.

"I'll help!" A voice called after the pair. With a friendly smile, Jeong-jae sauntered over to join Galacie and the unknown man, clearly intending to stick around even if he was refused. He'd come to town to buy a seal to try mixing with ink back at the dorm. He and Hwan-jae were going to meet up later to write their letters to Yoon-su together and he wanted to have something fun to add into the mix! He wasn't the best at drawing and could only doodle weird little images. The only problem was that he didn't know this town very well and had no clue where to start when suddenly he'd noticed a fellow trainee look like she was getting hassled. Her named evaded his memory but he could swear he'd seen those violet eyes back at the compound. Either way he'd decided to come along to make sure nothing questionable was going on.

"So what's the job? Making stuff up?" Snagging the flyer, the boy raised an eyebrow in surprise. At first glance this looked like it should be easy and honestly a little silly. The only problem was how were they supposed to replicate a snowcone without ice? Frowning at the task, he mulled over what would be best while their employer shoved them in a kitchen and told them to figure things out.

"I'll be in the store room. Call me if you need anything!" With that the man headed back out. While he didn't quite know what to do, Jeong-jae turned to his new partner and extended a hand.

"I'm Jeong-jae. Not entirely sure what I signed up for but we'll figure it out. What's your name?"

The abrupt whirlwind of energy from their now-employer took her by surprise as he swept them into the kitchen, leaving them to their own devices. He hadn't departed nearly enough information! What did he expect out of such a dish? What ingredients could they use? The introduction of her newfound partner rang a bell - introductions! She could handle introductions!

"I am Galacie," A quick glance at his uniform, and she felt comforted by the familiarity of the tell-tale jacket and boots, "And apparently fellow trainee."

Freeing herself of her clothed hood-wrap, Galacie held the flyer back up and quirked a brow, "I've not tasted such a dish before, these snowcones. I have heard of them though, where they melt in the sun and taste of syrup like fruit."

Violet eyes took stock of the shelves as she warmed herself to the task, "Melts in the sun? A rather broad category, I should think. I mean.. cheese melts in the sun. Cheese and mashed fruit? In a cup? Doesn't sound particularly appealing." She frowned. The one time she tried to make a full on dinner (before being promptly banned from repeating such an endeavor) resulted in both the overcooking and under cooking of multiple dishes (often simultaneously in the same dish), a strange sour taste in others, and enough smoke to have fogged the room.

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained! She felt oddly cheery about their task at hand.

"I've never had one either. Sounds nice though." Peering over her shoulder from behind, Jeong-jae scanned the directions once more while noting she was an inch taller than him. Dang it! Why was everyone so tall around here? Hoping to go another two inches in the next year, he wished his genes would cooperate with his wishes. The girl turned to poke through the various shelves and he smiled at the sight, thinking she looked cute going about this so methodically. Listening to her think out loud, he laughed at the suggestion she made and shook his head.

"I'd try it if you'd try it. But I think we should focus on the 'refreshing' aspect of it!" The mixture sounded gross but that's what made it a perfect courage challenge. Wondering if she'd take him up on it, as a side project, he poked his head through the pantry as well to see what options they had. They were obviously going to need to involve fruit for the flavoring but what would emulate ice?

"What about watermelon? We could substitute the crushed ice with that, right?" Remembering one of his favorite treats on the hot days back home, he looked to Galacie to gauge her reaction. He didn't know if watermelon was accessible in this town or not.

"Try what? Melted cheese and mushed fruit?" Galacie laughed, but immediately considered the option. She had almost no sense of competition, nor was she the type to be goaded into a challege for the sake of it being a challenge. She was, however, always open to new experiences, and she had never tried cheese with fruit.

"Very well, for the betterment of science and cooking!" With a sudden, matter-of-fact determination, she began to rummage through the available fruits. Their employer was surprisingly well stocked, but with summer and all the recent harvests, she knew that she shouldn't be so surprised.

She paused her hunt as Jeong-jae offered his own suggestions, considering her own past experiences with watermelon (all quite pleasant, thank you very much) and realized that the consistency would fair much better when crushed compared to other foods, "Watermelon? That's fairly brilliant, actually. Though the melon alone wouldn't be terribly unique. Perhaps if we mixed in.." She held up the round, brown, furry fruit in her hand, pausing. The trainee read plenty of facts, but food hadn't really been a category she'd studied on, despite a passing interest in it, "Uh, other.. fruit. I'm sure it'd have more of a burst to it."

Galacie couldn't locate a watermelon, but she was sure their employer would provide them with funds to fetch one. She did find a honeydew melon, strawberries, some weird red berries with spines comming off them, green apples (though she preferred red ones herself), small round green fruits in a bunch, and of course cheese. She pulled a few herbs off the shelf for good measure; at least she knew what mint was. Strange red flakes? Sure, why not.

When looking at the pile she had created, she peeked back at the black haired trainee and gave a shrug, "Figured we could taste test and compare sweetness to find some sort of balance. Though we should probably go find a watermelon first, huh. They do a lot of trade here in town, so I'm sure they'd have watermelons. It's not a terribly uncommon food."

"We have to make sure it's different than just a fruit salad. Maybe we can still pour the syrups on the watermelon like a snowcone?" Jeong-jae tapped his chin, wondering what would feel 'new' that they could present to their employer. He got the feeling that the man wasn't the type to get hung up on details but there was still the off chance he'd surprise them. It'd certainly been a surprise to get involved in this project in the first place. Galacie continued on, turning the process into a scientific experiment with collecting data and such and he blinked trying to understand it.

'She's a bit clinical but not bad.' Brown eyes scanned over the girl's form as she sorted out the various fruits. The woman had very pretty eyes and an interesting hair color that he couldn't quite place. Tied back it was impossible to determine the length but that didn't matter in the end, did it? It was pretty fun to watch someone with such a careful approach to things figure out a plan.

"Let's go get a watermelon then!" Jeong-jae nodded and turned on his heel to head outside. Heading into the storeroom he tapped their employer on the shoulder and demanded money to buy ingredients. He seemed confused at first but then nodded once hearing what they wished to purchase and handed over a decent sum to allow them to buy three or four to start with. Returning to his work in the store room he called out to drop by Alfred's stall and tell them Jonathan had send them. It supposedly would help them get a discounted price.

"So what brought you to the military? With all your science talk it seems you should be at a real academy instead." The pair began to make their way down the road, heading towards the marketplace and Jeong-jae decided to make conversation along the way. He was a nosy person and liked to figure out what made a person tick. Galacie had a sweet air to her but also seemed a bit reserved and he thought maybe some casual small talk would be interesting.

Galacie snapped her fingers together, "What about honey? Oh! Or boiled sugar to make the syrup?" She might not know much on food, but she had stalked enough chocolate to see other candies in the process to know that boiling sugar would help change the consistency of things. Her face was beaming; being able to play around freely with things wasn't generally encouraged in their world. Trainees were to follow instructions, do things a certain way, follow certain rules. Here, they had no rules. It was strange, but she found herself enjoying the ability to make so many decisions, strange though they may be.

As the duo were equipped with their employer's permission, they set out to find Alfred. She was surprised that they would be trusted with coin so readily; they were literally strangers he had picked off the street. Though Jonathan seemed to have a fairly eccentric aire about him anyways, so perhaps it wasn't so strange coming from him.

Jeong-jae's question caught her by surprise, and she took a moment to peer at him from the corner of her eyes. Although he was shorter than her, the up-swept nature of his hair seemed to make up for the lost inch. His eyes appeared to match his hair at first glance, but she noted they had a rich brown hue to them.

"Well," Galacie didn't mind sharing, and the fellow seemed pleasant enough, "An academy would cost quite a fair coin, and they teach you from books. Things I can learn on my own. I thought I'd find more things of interest here. I feel like teachers in schools tend to.. disuade constructive analysis and innovation."

She gave a casual shrug, then remembered meeting her new dormmates. They had exchanged reasons for joining then, too, "I think most join to escape something, or for the pay. For them it's a necessary way to live, and I applaud them for their courage. I don't really have anything brave or exciting to tell, sorry." The trainee gave a little laugh then, "I wouldn't even know how to make a difference if I did find new information. I think everyone here is still learning about themselves, though. So maybe one day."

They made a turn in the road, and Galacie flushed as she realized her monologue was longer than intended. "What about yourself? You're creative enough to have gone into marketing or open your own shop, so what brought you to these grounds?"

((No problem! G'luck with the trip!))

"As you said, it costs money." Jeong-jae laughed good-naturedly as Galacie praised his creativity and inquired about a store. It also sounded like a lot of work but he supposed it wouldn't have been a terrible lifestyle. Something permanent and settled would have been good for Yoon-su and if it'd been in the city Hwan-jae couldn't have complained either. But without the upstart money it was impossible. Plus he wasn't sure he could keep an eye on everyone while sitting behind a counter all day. Galacie had a much more respectable reason for not going into an academy than his desire to run around with his brother a bit more.

"I do think you're wrong about yourself though." With a sly look in his eye, the dark haired boy looked into violet once more. Galacie was rather humble about herself it appeared but he got the feeling she honestly did need some help with her confidence. She seemed to feel okay talking about herself just not about her accomplishments. It made him curious what kinds of things she'd done in the past that she was down playing in order to not seem cocky.

"We're about to change the world of snowcones today! Tomorrow we'll reinvent the 3DMG!" Thrusting a fist into the air, he attempted to pep up his partner. She didn't think she could make a difference but that was completely untrue. They might not make the change they want to but he believed all of them altered the world little by little in their own ways. He wouldn't be the person smart enough to solve any real problems but maybe by funding Yoon Su's schooling she would become one. These kinds of thoughts were what fueled him to be here.

"Your idea for boiling sugar sounds interesting. Let's try it when we get back!" He honestly didn't know how to make syrup so it'd be a fun experiment. As they made their way through the roads, he spotted the marketplace coming into view and grabbed Galacie's arm so they wouldn't get separated. Calling out Alfred's name, he was pleased to see a middle aged man with a bushy mustache perk up and look around. With sandy blonde hair and green eyes, the man had pinkish skin from being out in the sun a lot but still looked pleasant enough.

"What is it, boy?"

"We'd like four watermelon for your best price. Jonathan sent us." Jeong-jae leaned over the counter with a wink.

"Jonathan? You tell that rat he still owes me four copper!" Turning from pink to red, the man's face changed from a happy business man to an outraged farmer.

"What should we do? I don't that much extra money!" Jeong-jae whispered to Galacie looking panicked.

((Hehe I love making NPCs. I will write out Alfred's reply to whatever you have Galacie do, just wanted to see what you'd do! XP If I need to edit anything let me know and I will. Also thanks for being patient and waiting for me! Sorry about that wait.))

Galacie laughed at Jeong-jae, his fist in the air and his energy contagious, "Snowcone revolution, a strange first step towards the reinvention of 3D gear. But sure, why not." She laughed again, shaking her head but feeling optimistic.

Her grin became a polite smile as they approached their destination, and her polite smile gave way to a small, surprised little twitch at the man's abrupt outburst. Her face still a polite mask, she twisted her fingers nervously behind her until her fellow trainee whispered his very valid concern.

She swallowed hard, gathering her courage and relying all too heavily on her rigid, neutral persona, "Jonathan gave us coin for these watermelons; yours specifically, he said, and I suspect he knew that you sold the very best in town. Surely one wouldn't withhold debt for much longer when he clearly holds you in high respect."

It wasn't exactly untrue; she drew what conclusions she could from their meager knowledge, and she liked to believe it was Jonathan's point of view. It just had the possibility of being as untrue as it could be true. The alternative was that Jonathan knew he could take advantage of Alfred, but she didn't feel the need to voice this particular option.

She continued, "With the purchase of your melons, the debt at least would not increase as he pays a fair price. He is currently seeking development of a new bit of.. merchandise himself, to be completed today. And I can personally assure you repayment once development is complete and it sells." Galacie glanced at Jeong-jae, giving a reassuring smile, then turned back to Alfred, "I have full confidence that it will be a success."

So there was some bite to her!

Impressed by Galacie's steady words, Jeong-jae watched her calmly reason with the farmer and was relieved to have brought such a quick thinker with him. He liked to think he was pretty quick too but had to admit he'd been unsure what to say and do in this situation. Alfred listened to Galacie's statements with a stiff neck and cross face until she mentioned something about a new product. Obviously interested, he nodded to show he understood and then chuckled.

"I was just messing with you, Jonathan's actually a good friend of mine. But this is the first I've heard of a new product! You tell him he'd better send me a sample later or we'll have some trouble for real!" Loosening up from his angry charade, Alfred held up his hands to show he wasn't going to actually start a fight. Moving over to show them his selection of watermelons, the merchant allowed them to pick out what they liked as he chattered on about how to tell if they were ripe.

"Haha you fooled me! I'll get ya back for that!" Jeong-jae played the part of challenged trickster well, pretending he'd swing through here again to get revenge. Truthfully he'd been more nervous than he'd shown but he wasn't going to admit that out loud! Back home the villagers of his small town had often pulled various stunts similar to this but he'd been in on the joke for his whole life and known not to be alarmed. Clearly he was going to have to familiarize himself with the new faces in town here to not get fooled again! Handing over the money to pay for the melons, he hefted two into his arms and regretted not bringing something to help transport them back to the shop. Would Galacie be alright carrying two as well? It felt like a dumb question because they had standards they needed to reach in the military so it was likely she was strong enough but he wasn't used to girls doing this kind of thing. Ugh that was probably a sexist thing to think, he needed to wise up on all the new information and changes around him!

"What a weirdo, huh? Jonathan's probably even worse." As soon as they were out of ear shot, Jeong-jae glanced to his partner with a smile that said he wasn't serious. His personality was just a bit gossipy by nature even though he wasn't really sharing any real rumors right now.

"Good job though, if that'd been real you'd probably have saved us." Nudging her with his elbow, the boy was not shy about giving out praise. He was the type of guy to let others know when they'd done something cool (unless he didn't like you but he hadn't formed any grudges yet). The logic that they'd brought along enough money to still pay for the watermelons even though the rest of the tab had supposedly been more than they could handle hadn't occurred to him as fast as it'd hit her. That showed him that she was pretty logical and her ability to remain polite despite their panic had been unexpected.

"Well, time to see if you were right about our success! Back to work!" They returned to the kitchen and set the watermelons down on what counter space they had. Pulling out a sharp knife, he began slicing one in half to reach the wet fruit flesh inside for them to play with. Figuring he'd work on scooping out the 'ice', he hoped Galacie would formulate a plan for the sugar syrup she'd mentioned earlier since he had no idea how to make it.

"O-oh, haha, yes, indeed." Galacie pasted on that porcelain smile once more as they finished their transaction. She had fallen silent, happily letting Jeong-jae take the lead in the conversation now that the apparently not-so-imminent crisis was over.

The meeting over and watermelons at hand (a feat that would have caused a breakout of sweat before coming to the training compounds for certain), they rounded the corner away from the shop. As soon as they were out of sight, Galacie sank to her knees right there at the corner of the road, her fingers shaking nervously. "I should have realized, not sure why I didn't, of course that wasn't true fury was it." She slapped her hands over her face as if to hide her shame, "Oh gosh I hope I wasn't too rude. That could have really impacted their business relationship. Ruined lives. No no, don't over-think this. It's fine. It's done and over with."

And just like that, Galacie took a deep, shaky breath, closed her eyes for but a moment, then stood up in one swift motion, her shoulders squared and her face cooly trained once more. At least she had withheld the panic until after the moment; surely that counted for something, despite the suddenly less than impressive display. On the plus side, she was, if anything, flexible to changes.

"Right, as you say, back to work!"

As if in an unspoken agreement, Galacie let Jeong-jae handle the watermelons as she began boiling water, testing a mixture of sugars and honeys to see how the consistency changed. Three pots later and she finally had one that wasn't a black smoking brick, nor a slimy jiggle, but a smooth, gliding syrup-like substance. She set it aside to give it time to cool, and pulled out the cheese with a sudden, daring smile, "I recall something about melted fruit cheese?"

"... Y'know, I didn't realize it ei-" They'd worked in an unsettling silence after returning to the and after several minutes of scooping the watermelon, Jeong-jae opened his mouth to reassure Galacie about what'd happened just for her to cut him off with a sly smile. Oh gods that smile.

"Wh-what? Oh yeah!" Thrown off balance by her shift in mood, he was caught up in surprise after surprise with this girl! Hadn't she just been sitting outside in the dirt having a meltdown twenty minutes ago? It was nice to see she'd bounced back already or at least had the capability to move on, he only wished he'd comforted her earlier. Jeong-jae hadn't known what to say and let her have her moment in peace, pretending not to notice in case it embarrassed her. It appeared to have worked now that she was looking at him with a confident glint in her eyes that had an unintentionally sexy undertone. Averting his eyes from her, he tried to hide that he'd been staring.

"Whoever eats the most without spitting it out wins!" A plan came to mind and he instantly began turning it into a game, almost out of habit. His family was a playful one with the brothers having to come up with ways to entertain their younger sister and sometimes each other. Grabbing a handful of grapes, he plopped them in a bowl and mashed them slightly with a pestle. Galacie handled the cheese, having mastering the art of melting stuff after the pots of sugar gunk and they were in business! Dribbling the liquid cheese over the fruit, Jeong-jae hoped it didn't taste as bad as it looked and decided to force Hwan to try some later. This would all be worth it to see his brother gag and yell at him for making him try something so nasty.

"By the way, loser has to follow one order from the winner. It can be anything." Putting some terms on the results, he picked up a spoon and poked at his portion. Opening his mouth for a spoonful of the concoction, his throat tightened slightly in revulsion as he swallowed the mush and wished he'd thought to toss a little sugar on first or at least some seasoning of some kind.

((Just adding in some chance to my post since I'm fine with Jeong losing or winning! If you have a preference let me know! You don't have to do the chance game but if you want to that's okay too!

1- Jeong spits that s**t out! and loses
2- Jeong manages to swallow it but with tears forming
3- Jeong eats it like a boss and smirks as Galacie begins))

At first, Galacie didn't know what to make of being in a competition. It wasn't exactly something that happened very often with her. Having grown up as an only child with parents who specialized in professional networking, Galacie wondered if perhaps this is what it would be like to have a sibling. She wouldn't have minded growing up with a Jeong-jae brother, though it was hard to picture. Would a sibling have dragged her outside, or perhaps sat with her in the comforts of the library stacks? A brief pang of longing hit her as she recalled the feline who kept her company during those long hours growing up. She missed feeling the soft fur and the rumbling purr under her fingers.

Pulling her attention back to the challenge at hand, she thought that at least it looked promising in terms of entertainment. The prize at the end baffled her though; she had no idea what to order if she won. What did people usually order? She suspected the completion of chores, but those she had generally completed well enough already. Perhaps she could use it on behalf of Terry Tuggle, who seemed to always need assistance, despite his numerous assistants already.

Galacie stared suspiciously and the goop in the bowls before them, holding her spoon with trepidation. "Right, here goes.."

The mere color, a swirl of puke green-yellow was enough to make her stomach flip and her mouth run dry. She mirrored Jeong-jae and scooped a healthy helping on the spoon, determined still to give it a try. Although they began simultaneously, Galacie froze at the first bite. The goop sat precariously on her tongue, and she was afraid that if she moved, it would attack even more tastebuds. She tried to swallow, but her throat refused to cooperate. Violet eyes scanned the room in a quick motion of panic before spotting the rag to her right. She discretely slipped the rag off the table, demurely bowed her head, and quietly spit it out.

Although she felt shame at her failure, she still felt the urge to laugh at it. She watched with amazement as Jeong-jae downed his portion, and when he finished she did laugh, shaking her head, "I've no room to argue at my complete and utter loss. If you wanted to finish this.." She jokingly pushed her still-full bowl at him, "Otherwise, name your price."

While waiting for his order, she pulled the large bowl of sugar-syrup closer to herself to test if it had cooled down enough to handle. It was still hot, but not enough to instantly burn anymore. If Alfred left the mixture in the cellar overnight, it would chill enough to thicken further and hold their fruit mix together better. But they still needed a preliminary concoction, so it would fit their needs for now.

"Man that was gross!" Jeong-jae laughed as Galacie hurriedly grabbed a rag to spit her portion out in. He couldn't blame her because the mixture looked completely unappetizing and tasted even worse. It'd been cute to see her make a face and then rush to dispose of the concoction in a polite way. While she began to think of how he'd be as a brother, his thoughts were less platonic and started to see her as a cute girl to flirt with. They had very different interests and stories behind them but he felt like they were making a connection of kinds, delving just a little into a shared neutral space.

"Yes, I won!" He'd be lying if he said he hadn't expected this. Galacie wasn't super delicate or anything, Jeong-jae simply had experience doing stupid dares for the sake of competition. Holding up a hand to reject the rest of her bowl, he clearly didn't want to repeat the experience. As she took the loss gracefully, the black haired boy began to think about what to demand her to do. Ever the diligent explorer, she continued working on testing their project while he sat and watched her. The atmosphere had become cozier than before and things felt warm after that bit of silence. Glancing up and down her back, his eyes returned to that clamp at the back of her head.

"Let down your hair and close your eyes." Getting up as he gave the order, Jeong-jae moved to step next to her. What he planned to do after she complied was not clear but it seemed he intended to stand right in front of her. Looking intently at her face, his expression had changed from a goofy one into something more thoughtful and serious.

((Sorry it's short! Just wanted to give her a chance to refuse if you wanted.))

Hair and eyes? Galacie quirked a brow, thoroughly confused. Having her hair down in the kitchen was a recipe for disaster. Or at least a recipe for very stringy food, long as it was. And closed eyes certainly would prove fatal should she attempt the oven. She deducted that these would be temporary changes as she doubted he'd risk their employment status, and quickly attempted to file through potential outcomes.

She thought back to her observations of other trainees, some pranks, some friendly slaps on the back.. Galacie had no idea what potential pranks might be as she never took particular interest in them. Did he want to change her hairstyle? Did she even brush her hair today? A moment of panic at the thought of unbrushed hair that would surely defy gravity to spring from its coiled prison.

While she wasn't exactly the type to back out on her word, she did try to side-step the issue, an instinct based on her nervousness at the new social interaction, "Isn't that technically two orders?"
