They had been together since he was a birth present, and he hoped they would be together until the end of time, but humans and dogs were too different. Unlike most dogs that were usually blissfully ignorant, Fido knew this all too well. One day, he would have to leave his master.
Fido's greatest fear was leaving his master alone. One reason was because they grew up together and were each other's only company. The other reason is that they were both homeless and he was his master's caretaker, whether the boy knew it or not. Nearing the end of his lifespan, Fido, in desperation, made the only prayer and revealed the only desire in his life: to be reborn so his master would not be alone. On what was supposed to be his last day to live, he suddenly woke up in a young man's body and he knew his prayers were answered. However, there was a catch: he could only be there for his master until he was no longer needed.
Fido, now self-named Carter, needs to decide between being his master's only friend if only to stay with him until death, or help the other boy become independent. The thought of having to leave was painful, but the idea of his master having no one else was even more so.

 Name: Jasper
Age: 15
What I have been through: Banished by his own parents at the age of twelve, Jasper now lives on the streets with the only other person he can count on in his life. His faithful companion Fido has always been at his side, from the time he turned a year old until the day his parents kicked him out of the house for being a 'devil's child' because of how odd his hair color came out.

The first decent meal they've had in about a week, Jasper had found half a sandwich in a dumpster behind a local deli. His faithful companion kept watch for him and in return Jasper fed his four legged friend. He got out of the dumpster and sat with his back against a wall, splitting the small sandwich in half once again and giving his companion part of it. "Here you go boy." he said softly, munching on the other part of the sandwich as well. "Its the best meal we've had in a while so enjoy it." A small smile grew as he spoke.

Fido barked and licked Jasper's hand before munching on his own half of the sandwich. "Thank you!" he thought while he swallowed his sandwich. He then proceeded to lie at his master's feet, waiting for a command. The sun was still up, but their day wasn't very busy. It mostly consisted of begging for either food or money. Speaking of begging, perhaps it was time Fido did his fair share. He lightly bumped his head against Jasper's leg for permission to find a place that would spare some more food. This was an advantage to being a dog: a cute enough dog got free scraps.

Jasper finished his part of the sandwich quickly as well, now just staring up at the sky from the bottom of the alley when he felt Fido nudging his knee. He groaned a little and looked down at his faithful companion. "Still hungry huh?" he said softly, rubbing the top of the dog's head a little before pulling the canine in for a tight hug for a few moments. "Alright, lets go see what tricks we can pull this time." he said with a little laugh, standing up and pulling out a cardboard sign from his backpack that read "The Amazing Fido!"
He lead the canine around the corner and up a few blocks into the city where the city bus station was, there were usually a lot of people there. Jasper pulled his hair into a loose ponytail with a strand of cloth he found a few days ago and sat with his back against a pillar that held up a roof over the benches. The cardboard was bent in half so to stand on its own and he took out a small glass jar to place between him and the sign for money and food. "Alright Fidophilas. Do your thing." he said softly, watching the people walk by and stare in his direction curiously.

Fido shook his limbs to warm up. The first thing he did was bow as if he was really on a stage before gracefully standing on his hind legs. Walking up to a woman who happened to stop to watch, he held out his hand for a shake, one which she tentatively accepted. After a small shake, he returned to standing on all fours and returned to his starting point. He then proceeded to shuffle from side to side as if dancing, letting his tale rhythmically match his legs. Some children in the crowd seemed impressed.
"This would be much better with some music," Fido thought to himself. After he finished shuffling, he headed to the crowd to push a few children onto his makeshift stage. Once they were herded into a line, Fido took his spot on in front of the first child and began to spin, moving himself expertly so as to weave between the gaps between each child. The finale of the short act was to run toward a pillar, jump, and bounce himself off into a sort of wall flip and landing on the ground as perfectly as he could for his age. There were a few claps and he heard the sound of coins and paper set into a glass jar. Satisfied, he approached Jasper and waited for his praise.

He was always proud of his companion, without that cute dog he would probably have a more difficult time getting food and money. Jasper watched the crowd silently and trusted his dog to please them. Once the coins and a few dollars here and there; someone even placed a five dollar bill in the jar. Jasper saw Fido's expectant expression and gave a big smile. "You did really good! We have enough for a pizza at least." he said happily, giving the gentle giant a ruffle on the head. "Come on, lets get dinner. The sun is about to go down so we need to move kind of quickly." he said as he stood up and made his way toward the nearest cheap pizza place. Jasper passed a few alleys and in one of them there were a group of men harassing a young woman for her purse and probably her a** too. He would have tried to stop them but he knew he'd be better off just ignoring the situation.

Fido growled at the harassing gang, but he could do nothing but stay close to Jasper. As an aging dog, he would stand no chance against the men. Following Jasper to the pizza place, the collie remained outside so as to be polite to the store owner. "Get lots of meat!" he barked while his master approached the counter. He was already drooling at the scent of pizza.

He stopped as soon as he heard Fido growling and glared a little at him. "Fido, shush!!" he commanded, hoping the gang didn't hear the growls. Jasper entered a Little Caesar's and paid for a five dollar peperoni pizza. It was the best he could do right now. With all the extra change he had left, Jasper was planning to save it so he could afford small things from the convenience stores in the future. Jasper came out but didn't see his four legged friend, but the panic was short lived when he saw the animal sniffing around some bushes. "Come on boy! Lets go home and have some dinner!" he called, patting his side and waiting patiently for his friend to approach him. "We're gonna eat really good tonight." He said with a slightly excited smile.

Fido sniffed the area out of boredom before he heard Jasper calling to him. With a bark, he hurried excitedly to his master's side. He eyed the pizza hungrily, but made no move to bite the box. Instead, he occupied himself with feeling proud of the payments of his work. At Jasper's command, the two made their way home for a stomach-filling feast.

Jasper hurried to their alley where a dumpster sat behind a gate that could easily close, though it wouldn't lock. With a trusty guard dog there was no use to lock the gate. He moved to their dirty old mattress and sat down, opening the box and placing a few slices on the mattress for Fido. "You deserved it." he said happily, giving his friend a small peck on the head while the animal ate peacefully. "About time we got some decent food." he mumbled, munching on a slice himself. Jasper heard a bit of a shuffle from around the corner and tensed up a little, pressing himself against the wall so he could hide easily behind the dumpster. Good smelling food usually attracted the drug addicts the most.

Fido heard the shuffle as well and growled at the source. He moved a bit away from the dumpster to lower the possibility of the intruder suspecting Jasper's presence. When nothing happened, he barked. No response. He proceeded to move towards the source of the sound, growling all the way. "Who's there?" he barked again.

Jasper cursed under his breath when Fido moved toward the sound, then he saw that it was only one of his 'neighbors' entering the alley, drunk as usual. He gave a small sigh of relief and gave the old drunk a slice of pizza to make him go away; Jasper usually helped him out once in a while but it was more difficult when the man was drunk. He whipped around to face his friend and gave a stern scolding expression. "You know better than to do that Fidophilas!" he said in a raised voice. "When someone comes around the corner you stay by my side! You understand?!" he yelled a little louder, noticing Fido's ears lowering and tail submissively tucked between his legs. "Go to bed." he commanded but once he followed the canine there he decided it was too taxing to be angry at the animal. Jasper sat down and hugged his friend as tight as he could, almost fearing the poor thing might suffocate. "I'm sorry I yelled at you....I just.....you can't just rush into something!" he said worriedly, staring into the canine's large dark eyes now while he massaged the others' ears. "I can't lose you too.....if you go then I'll be all alone." he said softly, pressing his forehead against Fido's.

Much to Fido's annoyance, the source of the noise had come from the drunk who stopped by sometimes. The collie could never recognize the scent, especially when it was always covered by that foul-smelling alcohol. He would have simply gone back to eating his pizza right then and there, but Jasper started to yell at him. Fido whimpered as he was lectured, his ears and tail curling up out of instinct to make him appear small. He marched to bed at the command and continued his whimpering in guilt, all until he was pulled into a tight embrace and he was reminded as to why Jasper was so upset.
The collie knew too well. Ever since Jasper's parents abandoned him, Fido had been the only one there for the boy. Of course he had to be more careful, so they could stay together as long as possible. Fido gave Jasper's cheek a lick, as if assuring him that he would always be there. However, he knew he was old for a dog. Soon, he would no longer be there to protect his master or help him get money for food. The very idea crushed Fido, but what could he do? He whimpered again and he licked his master's face again, this time to comfort himself.
