Maritza lazed about in the shallow area of a large lake. She had her head tilted back, her hair blowing slightly in the breeze. The smell of rain permeated the air and storm clouds overhead promised rain and possibly lightning. Rumblings of thunder overhead broke the silence every now and then. The rhythmic movements of the water's waves relaxed her as she enjoyed her time alone. Anika, her dolphin familiar, was enjoying herself in the deeper parts of the water. She would swim up and jump out of the water every so often to peek at Maritza. Maritza smiled at her and laughed every time, waving her tail fin at her.
Her companions Neptune and Whisper weren't very far, but they had been spending more time with other seathi lately. Maritza found it a bit saddening as she had grown to really care for the two little seathi. She considered them her children in a way. She was very proud of them, for they had grown into remarkable young stallions. She could remember back to the day she had found them both, scared and alone, separated by a tragic event. Now that they were old enough to be on their own, Maritza spent more time to herself. Sometimes it was welcomed, but others she felt a pang for those days where they were always by her side.

The water here tasted different. Almost... empty, and devoid of its usual tang. Yet it felt fresh, and far cleaner than any water he had ever sampled before. He flared his nostrils, revelling in how interesting it was. His own body felt somehow heavier, as though the water around him had less to it, couldn't support his bulk as well. So, this is what freshwater is like. He mused quietly, doing a luxurious spin of his body as he took in his surroundings.
It was certainly interesting. He'd never really ventured out of the ocean before, where he'd spent his entire life. Of course, he knew mer skin was very adaptable, and could survive in pretty much any type of water. He'd even heard rumours of mers slugging it out in muddy swamps - though that sounded like a sad existence to him. Far better to be free deep within some open water, than trapped in tiny pools, never feeling clean.
Well, each to their own, he supposed. He gave a few more powerful flicks of his tail, heading towards the surface of the lake. He'd been told that the lands around this lakeshore were particularly beautiful, and very different from the sandy beaches he was used to seeing. It would be quite the experience, he had decided.
