Oisin walked silently through the forest. His mind was focused on the task at hand. There was a large log blocking the path that most Soquili traveled to go through the forest safely. It was his responsibility to remove it. Storms had moved through the night before bringing high wind and rain, toppling the tall tree right across the path. Other smaller trees had blown over as well, and he had been clearing those all morning. Those were easier to move, but this one was larger and would require more effort and time. Oisin had a plan, and he could only hope it would work, for he didn't have any help to move it.
Up ahead, he saw the log blocking the path. He approached it apprehensively, studying the size of it and the condition of the ground. With the rain, came mud and with mud, came unsteady ground. It might make moving this log a bit more difficult if he couldn't get a good sturdy footing. Luckily, it wasn't too muddy in a few places, so if he positioned himself just right he might be able to get his hooves on solid ground.
After a couple minutes of deliberation, he found a solid dry place to stand and butted his head against the log and began to push. He pushed harder, putting all he had into it. The log budged just a little, but it wasn't enough. He grunted with the effort and after a minute or so, stopped. He would have to try a different tactic. He tried pushing with his hooves instead. The log started to roll, but it didn't roll completely over. The inertia left him almost falling over the top of the log instead of moving it. This wasn't going to work either.
His ears perked up at the sound of hooves sloshing through the mud. Oh no! Someone was coming and he hadn't been able to move the log yet. He turned to see who was approaching. It was a familiar Soquili whom he had known for a while. "Hi there," he called out in greeting. "I'm sorry, but the path is blocked by this log."

The storms had grounded her, all the rain soaking into her feathers made it harder for her to fly. She didn't especially care for getting her hooves and hair all muddy, but it was unavoidable. She appreciated the rain for it brought forth new life and washed away the old. She even appreciated the wind and stormy weather at times, but she was glad that they had passed and the skies were clear. The air smelled so nice after a summer storm.

Shania's attention was elsewhere, but when she heard the familiar voice, her ears perked and she looked ahead to see her old friend Oisin. "Hello!" she called in return. Carson and Fancy slept quietly in her hair as she walked, otherwise, she might have been flying. Today her journey brought her through familiar territory and along the path that she had known quite well, where she had met Oisin many years before.

As she drew closer, she saw the log that he had mentioned. It was quite a large obstacle blocking the path. "That looks heavy. Are you trying to move it?" She knew he had taken it upon himself to keep the pathways clear and take care of the forest. He'd told her his story long ago. She admired him for his responsibility. "Would you like some help? I really don't mind."

Oisin nodded and smiled at her. "Thank you very much for offering, but I couldn't let a pretty mare such as yourself get herself dirty by moving a log. Besides, it's my responsibility. It won't take but a moment and I'll have it out of the way." He stepped beside the log and positioned himself to try again to move it.

She huffed and stamped her hoof in the mud. "Honestly. I'm already quite muddy and wet, what's a little more?" She wasn't going to take no for an answer. She walked over and stood beside him, ready to help push the large log out of the path. "I'm going to help, and you can't refuse." She smiled at him and began to push.

He chuckled to himself and said, "Alright then," rolling his eyes and pushed with her. His hooves slipped in the mud a couple times and he almost fell to his knees, but together the two of them managed to get the log to budge about an inch. It was a really heavy log and without sure footing it was going to be really hard to get it to move.

"This isn't working," he said, standing up straight again. "We need some better traction for our feet if we're going to get this thing to move." He looked around for any ideas.

She put all her strength into pushing against the log, even flapping her wings a bit for some extra umph. Her hooves were sliding in the mud as well, giving her no better footing than Oisin.

"See," she grunted. "Aren't you glad I helped? You couldn't do this yourself -ooomph!" Her left front hoof gave way beneath her, making her fall to her knee into the mud and muck. It wasn't painful, just knocked the breath out of her. She gingerly stood again, as Oisin paused to look for something to help them keep their traction.

She looked down at her leg, now covered in mud up to her knee with leaves stuck to it. "This is going to take a long soak in the lake to get off.

As he looked around he spotted an old hollow log that was falling apart. He stepped over and examined it closer. There seemed to be a big piece he could pull over to the other log and maybe they could stand on it. "Here," he called to her. "Let's move this over to the log and stand on it for better footing. We should be able to move the log that way."

He began to drag it over to where she stood.

She watched him as he pulled it over. "Genuis idea. Let's hope it works," she smiled at him.

Once he had it in place, she took her place again beside him and they pushed against the log again. The piece beneath their hooves sunk into the mud but just enough that they still had solid footing. With their combined strength and solid ground under them, they were able to move the log and get it off the road.

Once the log was out of the way, there was a rut left in the path where it had lay. Oisin busied himself trying to fill it in again before it filled with rain water as he spoke. "Thank you Shania. I do have to agree that you were right. I wouldn't have been able to do it without your help. Or at least not as quickly. It might have taken me all day to get it done in this weather." He finished filling in the rut and stood to talk with her. "I enjoy the rain just as much as the next Soquili, but I'll be glad when it is dry again. It makes my job just that much harder."

He looked up and down the pathway for any other logs that might need their attention and saw none from his vantage point. "So young lady, what brings you this way on a day like this?"

"I was happy to help," she replied. "I'm glad we were able to get it moved. Those who can't fly depend on this path and if it's blocked by something like that, then they can't get where they need to go. I admire your hard work in keeping it clear Oisin." She smiled warmly at him. For all the time she'd known him, he'd always been a hard working Soquili, doing great at the job he put upon himself. He enjoyed his work, which meant he did it well.

"Oh, I'm just going home. I was soaked from flying through the rain and my poor feathers needed to dry out a bit before I flew again. But I should probably be getting on my way soon. Dhiren is probably wondering where I've been." She chuckled at her own comment. She was grateful for her mate's concern, but sometimes she felt he was over protective.

"It was great to see you again Oisin. Please come visit us sometime," she said as she started on her way.
