You ascend the final set of stairs and the first thing you see is... beauty.

User Image

It hardly seems likely, after all you've endured, to find a place of such serenity. Overhead streaks the Milky Way, small freckles of stars peeking at you through clear, beautiful glass, and around you sway glowing flowers of so many disparate types that it would take years to catalogue them all. Small snowflakes, or something an awful lot like them, drift down from the ceiling.

On a bench, halfway through the room, sits a slumped figure, untouched by the beauty around her. Mistral looks up at your approach, and does not smile. Beside her, her dog whines.

"I'm so sorry," she says. "I didn't know."

Babylon gasped as they emerged from the staircase. He didn't know when it had happened, but mistral had clearly been busy if she had the skylight cleared. He broke away from his group and ran across the lobby, the pain in his ribs deadened by his excitement and the lingering effects of the pollen. He wanted to hug her. He wanted to hug her more than he wanted anything else in the world.

"Mistral!" he cried, embracing her. "Mistral!" Babylon sank to his knees, his head resting against her stomach. "It's okay. It's okay. We- we made it."

He pointed to the group mounting the top of the stairs. "Most of us, anyway," he added, looking up towards the skylight.

"Hey," he said, focusing on a bright point in the foothills. "You can see Babylon from here."

Niflhel emerged from the stairs with a low whistle. The place was amazing, and rather beautiful in retrospect of what they'd endured from down below. "This is amazing." He said walking across the lobby to Mistral.

Finally settling down near her giving a little hum as he did, "Your glass coffin room down there had some funky mist. You should probably grab a dose." The knight shrugged, as he looked up towards the sky, "You'd think Mercury would be frozen all the way not. . . with awesome flowers."

He stopped thinking, "Bet Polaris would've loved to see this." He gave a sigh it seemed he was torn between wistful happy and happy-happy. "Yo, Hver, you still got the piece right?" He called towards the Cosmos page waiting for her to show up from the stairs.

"Oh Babylon, which is your wonder?" He asked glancing around.

Babylon lifted his head out of Mistral's head after a moment, having decided that this probably looked kind of unseemly now that more people were arriving, and settled onto the bench beside her. "Don't let the skylight fool you," he said to Niflhel as the other knight approached. "We're underground right now."

He never got tired of these flowers, though - sometimes he was even curious if they'd grow in soil on earth, but they were so obviously magical... or at least alien.

Pointing to the bright blue spot in the foothills, Babylon said, "Do you see that over there? That's my city." The great blue barrier obscured the individual lights. "We could walk there from here if we wanted to." He sort of wanted to. "The first time we came to Mistral, we actually walked from Babylon and had to dig the entrance out of the snow."

"I actually think I might head over there once we finish up here," he decided. "If anyone wants to come with."

Mimisbrunnr had aobut the same reaction as Babylon when she saw Mistral at the top of the stairs. The poor girl looked broken, and it occurred, vaguely, to Mimis that it was likely she had seen more death than just Cove and Degrasse. So she ran over, plonked herself off to Mistral's side, and slid her arms around the Page's shoulders.

"We made it out, and it's because you sent us to that security system," she said, with all the certainty in the world. She gave Babylon a smile, too. "I'd love to see your city, if we can."

Seeing the surface of Mercury sounded pretty damn amazing, even after what she'd been through underneath it.

"I wonder if Mimisbrunnr is anywhere near here?"

Hvergelmir's pleasant sense of fond reverie gradually faded as she ascended the stairs out of the labyrinth. She remembered her twisted ankle, and Cove's fearful bravery, and Degrasse's desperate pleas, and their group splintering apart. By the time she cleared the stairwell, she felt somber again.

It was good, honestly: Mistral looked ragged, and obviously hadn't had a moment of pleasant, drug-induced relief like they had. It would be cruel and embarrassing to show up radiating sunshine.

Hvergelmir crossed to where she sat, limping slightly to favor her injured ankle. "You did promise to show me your city," she said to Babylon, by way of agreement. "Fair's fair."

Then, setting the device piece carefully in Mistral's hands, Hvergelmir told her, "I don't think anyone believes you would've sent us if you'd known."

She heard a gasp, and then running footsteps. Mistral looked up and there was--there was Babylon, throwing his arms around her, his head in her lap. This was the moment she ought to pat his head, or pull him up and hug him back. But the moment she went to lift a hand and do that, the image of Degrasse Page's gruesome end flashed before her eyes. Piggy's screams arched through her head like lightning across a dark sky.

"Yeah," she said, struggling up a smile for Niflhel. She was glad that he'd made it through alright… and Babylon, too. In any other circumstance, she would've been glad to go on a field trip to the city, but here… here? Now? No. "It's pretty, isn't it?"

Another Mercury Page dropped down on her bench, an arm over Mistral's shoulders. She smelled like blood, an iron tang at the back of Mistral's throat, and there didn't seem to be a way to answer that wouldn't be… oh, woe is me, I could have done this alone but I decided to doom you all instead.

Hvergelmir, though. She handed Mistral the hinged box, and tears pricked the corners of Mistral's eyes, and that was when she began to cry, as quietly as she could. In Mistral's hands, the box opened up, to reveal a suitably arcane-looking piece of technology; she squeezed the metal until it dented slightly, bowing ever-so-gently inward. They'd died for this? All of those people? It was so small. So… inconsequential.

"Babylon's gorgeous," she said, and was proud for the steadiness of her voice. "You'll really like it. I promise."

Mendel whined from his place behind the small cluster of knights, and nosed at Hvergelmir's hand.

Babylon was hesitant to ask Mistral how the other groups had made out: he didn't see any of them here yet, and the scene on the intercom had sounded grim. They'd lost two from their group - what if worse had happened to the other exploration teams? He was almost certain that worse had happened.

"We should wait around for a bit," he said, "See if anyone else wants to go." And Mistral wasn't in any shape to make the trip right now, although he wasn't sure how to tell her so. Maybe she'd already reached the conclusion on her own.

"And you all need to finish drying off," he added. Mimisbrunnr and Niflhel were dressed for the weather, but he planned to give Hvergelmir his cape if they were going to go. "It's about a thirty minute hike," he said, "And it's cold." This being Mercury's night side and all that.

"I've got no idea where Mimisbrunnr is," he said, "But we could go there sometime and figure it out." Mercury wasn't a big planet, but it wasn't tiny, either - the chances of there being three wonders within walking distance of each other were slim.

Sarras, bloodied Page of the Cosmos, had no idea what had gone on in the other levels. When he had a goal in life that needed to be accomplished, he was simply the type to induce tunnel vision, locking his eyes forward and moving onward, turning his mind off to outward distractions and seeking to silence the innermost distractions as well. Right now, he was trapped in tunnel vision, and not just wading through it, but he was deep in his NECK in it. It was hard, to walk out of level six, with only one other knight behind him. It felt like he was wading through a thick, chunky river that's contents were replaced with gelantenous goo instead of water, and the thought of what he and Falias left behind only continued to weigh him down, threatening to pull him under and sweep him away... and maybe, that would have been for the best.

What right did he have to walk out of there with his life? What right did he have over any of them? They were children, bar two...

There was a movie that Richard watched when he was recovering once, some movie from the 80's, with a duel story. Daran watched but only to keep an eye on his brother to make sure the fool didn't drink himself dead, but there was one part in particular that he never understood. The hero and his horse were traversing through a swamp, and the horse couldn't continue. The horse wasn't stuck, not physically, but its despair dragged the poor steed below the marsh, his owner screaming its name before fading to black. He didn't get it at the time, and he didn't get Richard's reaction, as he sobbed uncontrollably and clung to his dogs. He didn't get it at the time.

He certainly did now.

He trudged forward, physically weighed down only by the blood that wasn't even his own, and level 0 may have been beautiful and sirene, but Sarras hardly noticed it. Its beautiful was wasted, and the idea of reaching the finish line and making it out not only alive but with the device in hand never crossed Sarras mind. Before he started the quest he was certain that they'd all gather the pieces they needed, but the cost... the cost soiled that victory for him. And the thought of dragging himself to the others, to see their smiling faces and triumphant 'we did it' cheers... the thought of staring Mistral in the face...

There were others there, but Sarras wasn't really looking at them. He wasn't sure if Falias was even following him or if he had lost another member of their crew, along with the damned device, and the faces he saw hardly registered to him. Not even Hvergelmir registered a response from him. His gaze shot to Mistral, and a sneer colored his bloodied face into a perfect picture of complete and utter disgust.

"I swear to God... tell me you have the other pieces of the god-damn device..."

He turned to Babylon, "I'd love to travel there, though if Mistral needs help with these and she wants I may send a note along to Snowball so he knows where to meet her. I'm sure he'd be happy to keep her company." He looked back to Mistral wondering if that'd help any. "Come to think of it, if there's a lot of snow outside of this -- Sowball'd probably love to come visit here sometime. It'd likely remind him a little bit of Polaris' homeworld."

Niflhel looked up as Sarras appeared and snarled, the Knight didn't move but he was watching the page for indications he was going to swing at Mistral, in which case Niflhel would have to stop him.

"Well I think we're still waiting on one group, Obviously everyone's had it a bit rough." He was even toned hoping to drag any anger that Sarras had towards him, "I'm sure they'll be along soon."

The scene that awaited as Falias ascended the final set of stairs may have been beautiful, but it was a beauty that was wasted as he trudged forward in his blood stained boots and uniform, walking through the glowing field of flowers in the same numbness in which he'd made his way upwards.

The glowing flowers may have been pretty, but he walked through them without looking.

There were others in the room, but Falias walked past them as if they didn't exist, green eyes that had gone glassy staring out from from a milk white face, uncaring of the tears that damped his cheeks as he made his way to the woman sitting halfway through.

He waited until was stood just in front of her before wordlessly holding out the device part that they'd found in that awful horrible room. A device part that seven people had given their lives for.

Hvergelmir blinked in surprise at the wet nose snuffling at her hand -- then, discerning that it was, in fact, a dog (of the Earth kind, not the, errr, alien kind, as far as she could tell), she smiled even in spite of the situation and crouched down to give the animal some proper affection. "Oh, hello, little buddy!" she said, even though the buddy in question was in fact quite a substantial amount of dog. "How're you doing, precious baby? Are you good? Are you a good puppy?"

It felt nice to be able to tackle a simple problem -- an animal in want of affection and stable energy (at least one of which two things she could provide). And it wasn't the dog's fault it wasn't sufficiently traumatized by the deaths of Degrasse and Cove -- after all, it wasn't like the dog knew. All it could tell was that something was wrong and people were unhappy.

After a few minutes, there were new footsteps on the stairs, and from them, two more people finally emerged. Sarras, first, and then, behind him, equally bloody, an Earth knight that Hvergelmir didn't recognize.

She was relieved to see Sarras, but -- he looked as despondent as she'd ever seen him. His words to Mistral were tense; and then, Niflhel was speaking, trying to get him to deflect his attention away from Mistral and onto the Saturn knight. It was admirable, but she wondered if describing the senseless deaths of their comrades as a bit rough was a bit much. Hoping to avert another scene like the one they'd had down below between Kairatos and Babylon -- especially since she really didn't think she could handle that right now -- she stood up from where she'd been petting Mistral's dog and moved to put herself in the Cosmos page's line of sight.

"Sarras!" she said, looking up at him. And then -- with a sudden, genuine feeling of dizzy relief, because there was the very real possibility that this was it, they were the last two knights left in the universe wearing the Cosmos star, and that was still better than the possibility of being the very last -- she threw her arms around his neck in a tight hug. Her blood-streaked face was buried in his blood-soaked shoulder, and she said, "Thank God you're okay."

Bifrost trudged up the stairs very quiet. The top level would have been gorgeous and breathtaking, but all Bifrost really wanted to do was go home. She was a whirl of emotions, unsure of which to be. Anger, for the unnecessary deaths. Sadness, for those who had lost their lives. Relief, for her own life and safety. Confusion, for why this was necessary in the first place.

Her lilac eyes turned to Mistral, a lack of light in them. Rage threatened to bubble over, and she felt cold liquid roll down her cheeks. Bifrost was not a violent person; she was quite the opposite really. She was always cheerful, always smiling, always upbeat. She was not upbeat and smiling now. Tears of rage and sorrow rolled down her face, staining her tunic. This one thought it okay to waste lives on a mission she hadn't fully thought out. This one thought it fine to put everyone's lives in danger. This one had the nerve to say "you'll like Babylon" and that she was sorry. While she did nothing and sat in her control room, safe from harm.

Mistral no longer had a name in Bifrost's mind. She was simply That One. She was simply Mercury Page. Even that, even that was being generous. The metal on her arms creaked as fists tightened and she felt her knuckles pop.

Fury she hadn't felt since she died on the Surrounding bubbled within her and Bifrost almost walked over and smacked her senseless. Almost walked over there and denied her the comfort of anyone with a barrier of rainbows. Almost walked over and made things worse. The Squire felt the chain unwind and felt herself grab it in her hand. The idea was there, the plan was created, and Bifrost forced herself to stay where she was. She forced her feet to not more, her mouth to not open, her arms to stay still by her sides.

No. Too much had already happened since they started this ridiculous mission.

Instead she stared at Mistral with hatred and pain. Perhaps the page looked over at her, perhaps not. Bifrost stayed that way until she simply vanished from existence without a word to anyone else.

She would not help the page of Mercury again. She would not answer the call, not give her the benefit of her barriers. Mistral had too much blood on her hands now for Bifrost's protection.

Once in her own room, she scribbled a note to the Page and sent it off. It read as follows:

To Mistral
I hope the deaths were worth it for your silly communication device. I hope it was worth the pain, the agony, and the loss of precious souls. Please do not call upon me to help you again.

The Bifrost deems you unworthy.

- Bifrost Squire of Chronos

Then, finally, Bifrost broke down and cried herself into fitful sleep.

Sarras cast the Saturn knight a classic 'who are you and why do I even care' look when he put himself in between himself and Mistral, and his entire ordeal simply left him too raw to even try to remotely act civil about it. If Nifhel's goal was to drawn his aggression away from Mistral, if even for a brief moment, then it was a success, and Sarras let the words fly without thought or care to who heard him or who would be upset. Right now, he simply didn't care...

"Obviously? Obviously? A grand master of observation there- obviously because everyone here had it rough, that means that the six knights I just watched get slaughtered by her-" He pointed to Mistral with bloodied fingers, then lowered it back to his side before he could lash out or strike her. "-walking-talking murder puppet means absolutely nothing and that I just need to sit down and enjoy the ******** scenery? Right?"

He glanced around himself, all of the beauty and marvel of this place was ruined, and he carried on, not seeing Hvergelmir's approach as he tugged at his own bloodied tunic for Mistal to see. "Take a good look, Mistral. Take a good long look... I heard your voice in there- you watched all of it, didn't you? You remember their names and faces! You remember ALL of them, because all of this is-"

He hadn't see Hvergelmir's approach until she screamed in his ear and flung herself on him, and despite his boiling rage, his nerves from the recent catastrophe on the sixth level made him flinch and only when he was certain that it was, in fact, Hvergelmir and not that damned puppet did he let out a shaky, ragged breath. The way she hugged him was a little uncomfortable to him, but what really got him was the fact that she hugged him in the first place... they had only met once, but he had pictured her to be far stronger in nature and possessing steely nerves when it came to facing down fiercer youma. She didn't seem the type to... cling like this. What was worse that, when he turned his head to look at her, the blood he saw her on elegant white dress and her face... was it from hugging him, or had she...?

"Gel... Gel, don't..." He didn't want the embrace and it had nothing to do with being a macho man. He didn't want to make it worse for her. As disgusting as it was, he didn't want to lose any of that blood, or anger that he had held onto. Anger was the only thing keeping him moving right now, and she was going to try and take that away from him? He wouldn't allow it! He could have pushed her off, but he didn't want to hurt her. What a damn dilemma this was. "Gel, I'm alright, so please... just..."
