I've noticed many people don't know you can try on items you don't own right here on Gaia. Many people use tektek.org to make avatars. There are two downsides I've noticed to making avatars on Gaia. Here you can't browse very well. It only shows so many at once. But if you know what item you are looking for it's very easy. The other downside is you can't wear more than one pose of an item. I however use the feature on Gaia because tektek does not have animal bases... still.
Once you save your picture you can upload it to something like photobucket.com to get an IMG link which you'll post in the contest thread or wherever else you wish. If you have any trouble message me or post here and I can help more.
If you make a human avatar with tektek, it is also admittedly easier because they give you a link that actually works (you can't just copy the image location in dress up, doesn't work) so you don't have to save the image then re-upload it to the net.
I hope this helps anyone, especially with making animal avatars. Here on Gaia is the only way to dress up in the animal items we can't afford yet.
