Sun Hunter
SHADOW RUN

General Information
The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.

If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.

If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.

    Mechanics
  • You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel.
  • Simply roll for attack as you would in battle.
  • If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings.
  • After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

  • Trainees: 0 recovery
  • Sun Trainees: 1 recovery
  • Hunters: 1 recovery
  • Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries

He never liked the Sun Run. The name alone was intimidating, and the techs there made him feel too lanky, his skin too pristine and devoid of scars. It made him feel weak and unimportant, as if the lack of scars meant he was pampered or hadn't seen a mission in his entire life.

But these techs were the ones who went through more than he did, where people relied on them during every mission, and he felt smaller in comparison. Their value in Deus was far higher than his, and they were an asset to their team – their loved ones.

They kept people from getting killed. Not the other way around.

It was the Sun Run that provided a controlled environment for him to test himself. He still needed all his runic clearances, and not wanting to waste his time in his lab these days, he decided not to keep avoiding these course. How was he supposed to be stronger, someone others could value and rely on, if he couldn't even pass a controlled course like this? Would he even be respected by others if he became a full hunter and never passed this course? Would he ever grow stronger? Would he ever be seen as anything but a burden to those around him whenever they were called on a mission?

Would anyone ever be able to rely on him?

Should they ever rely on him?

With Saliva in hand, he went to the Sun Tower and waited as a few frish-faced and smiling Sun's left the course. It seemed to have gone well for them, and both trainees were flushed and grinning.

Alone, he stepped into the tower.

The shadows came immediately, but while he had been afraid the first time he saw these shadowlings, they seemed small and unimpressive. They weren't close to being like Medea.

He raised his pistol and fired, taking out 5 shadows as he started to walk up the tower.

Walking was straight forward. Up and up the spiral staircase, and he reflected on how many times he had walked up stairs that never lead to a good outcome. During the Blue Kingdom, the Melvin and the other him both had walked up a tower, alone, and betrayed. He had been stabbed by his best friend and watched by the King who he had hoped was his friend. They had killed him because, as Rep explained, he would rather Melvin die by his hands than anyone else. He wanted him dead on his terms and not by another person.

Rep in that other world had felt Melvin was sure to die. He felt Melvin was so sure to die that he decided to kill him there. He never expected that Melvin to have a chance of surviving. He saw that Melvin as weak, defenseless, and unable to succeed and become the victor in a fight.

Did the Rep in that world feel the same?

He tried to remember a time where Rep asked for protection. He tried to think of anyone asking for his help in the battlefield or really relying on him. He couldn't think of an instance where that had happened. He had always been helping someone out just to give them a boost in hopes they would succeed for them. For him. He even came to the island hoping someone would protect him.

Now he was left knowing he wasn't of any good to anyone. To those he clung to, he was a stone weighting them down in battle. Something to make it difficult, to falter, and maybe cutting him off like a cankerous lump on their leg to run further and better was the best thing for them all.

He shouldn't have relied on them.

The other tower had been no different. He had left with Rin, side by side, and he felt they would have made a great duo. They were both strong, both on the same level, Rin had experience, but Melvin had been training to get better. He hadn't trained hard enough.

They suffered through the rooms up to the top, but the moment he arrived, he was thrown down into that firestorm of a room. He only managed to pull himself out due to sheer will, and when he emerged back on the roof, back to where Rin and everyone were fighting, he was hit hard and fell. He hadn't lasted even a few seconds before he was bleeding on the ground.

He hadn't helped anyone. He hadn't done anything. He had just been there to be a worthless punching bag for Medea and the others. She didn't know him – that horsemen. She only threw her attacks out, and he was just a gnat she swatted away. His power was nothing. His name and existence was nothing to her. He wasn't even a blip on her radar.

And while that hurt his small ego, what hurt more was that she would have that same attitude to Rin. Medea didn't care, and yet chopped down the most important thing in his life without a thought or direct focus. Rin had just been in the way.

The way Melvin had been in before Rin moved to him.

"MELVIN, LOOK OUT!

He blinked back, watching as the shadows swarmed, and fired before picking up his face.

She should have never been there…..she should have never cared about him.

What now then? There wasn't much left to do. He couldn't avoid missions. They were mandatory and if there was a way to dodge them, he was sure someone had already figured that out. They had weapons and these weapons were given to all hunters on their very first day with a clear message: You will fight.

But what happened when you couldn't fight well?

His mind went back to the battlefield in the Sahara. Bodies upon charred bodies, broken tablets, and a story that didn't need telling. Those that couldn't match up – died.

Then maybe I should be dead.

If he wasn't strong, then he deserved to die. No one else felt he was capable of surviving on his own. Queen Rep didn't feel that way. Rin was there to protect him because he had fallen. He wasn't an asset. The wasn't a good friend. He was a cancer, a over-filled sore filled with puss.

He was an infection to those he knew. Rin only got injured being with him and would continue to be hurt when she returned.

And he was the cruel b*****d who expect to have people around him, who wanted their company.

What was he supposed to do then?

MELVIN! PAY ATTENTION!

No one should protect him. No one should rely on him. No one should expect anything from him - because he would fail them.

He would hurt them.

Steps from the top, he rose his weapon, but the shots fired mess.

The world turned black.
