Quote: Survey Mission 4CLocation: San Zhi Resort Images:: x, x, x. General debriefing: There has been the stirring of something that scares even the locals: a rumour has it that in the evening, the lights turn on several of the odd pod-like buildings. Music can be heard from within before the light flickers off. This investigation must happen, due to this claim, in the evening after dark. * C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee) MECHANICS * MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 4C. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a INSANITY ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics. 1- 20: The darkness combined with the fog make it extremely difficult to navigate. As you move your flashlight against the ground all you see is the crackled pavement, the pods obscured from sight - - As a skeletal face carved right into the cement leers at you - - And disappears. It was just your imagination... right? 21 - 40: Tattered pieces of fabric seem to be hanging from a few smashed windows. Upon further investigation you realize it is actually strips of skin peeled off some hapless creature. 41 - 60: You take a look at the pods again. They look normal enough, though none of them have the odd flickering light. Well that's a relief. A strange jarring noise interrupts you and as you look back, the order of the pods have changed, from location to colour. 61 - 80: You hear music playing in the background, a sort of wailing, foreign music. It seems to be coming from right above you, but nothing is there. Only you can hear it. 81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER: - As you continue walking down the sidewalk you hear a large crack, followed by another. A strange gas explodes from underneath, making you extremely dizzy, as you cough to figure out what is going on, fighting for air now. You have exposed your entire team to a hallucinogen, making everything more terrifying than ever as your vision swims and hops uncontrollably and your hearing becomes muted. Something creaks, groans, lurches underneath you, but is that your imagination? - BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob that has collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. AS you can't really see the boss, most of it will have to be dependent on what you can see, if anything at all, from strange faceless figures lurching, half-hopping towards you to the smiling dead coming back and swiping at you. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back. * 4 mission reward points for completing this successfully

Lex paced in front of the lighthouse, footfalls silent to his busy mind. He hadn't been sent out on a mission since he was a trainee, to that one island full of the dolls that sometimes still haunted his dreams. Harrowing visages played across his mind even now as he prepared himself mentally for the ensuing mission.
<< Calm down. You're stronger now. This is a different place we're being sent to. >>
Nodding, Lex pulled out his phone to check if he'd received a reply from Jack. He'd seen the notice for a blind date with the man on the cork board, and with it his opportunity to fulfill his obligation to Stormy. Opening his sent box, he checked the message again.ol-j-man To: Jack Hawthorn
This is Lex Jamil. You probably know of me, at the least. I need your help with a mission from the higher-ups. Meet me at the lighthouse at 20:00. Bring assistance. Well... that didn't seem too demanding or pretentious. "Here's hoping." He whispered to no one.

For once, Jack knew of a blind date ahead of time and didn't immediately want to kill himself. He didn't know a lot about Lex other than the few times he made passing comments and glances about the guy's girlfriend (who was far, far, far out of Lex's league in his opinion), but other than that they didn't really have a charge relationship or friendship or rivalry. Maybe that was a nice change of pace, given that he normally pushed people past rivalry and into full on loathing. What was also different was that none of his team had actually assembled this little get-together: Lex had contacted him personally.
Naturally, Jack suspected an agenda. Maybe it was just to fill out bodies for a mission, though this seemed like an unnecessary way to fill it. Maybe he was about to get some comeuppance for treating a few people like s**t lately; who knew who was friends with who on the island.
He decided a little back up would be prudent even without being asked to bring some. And he knew the one person in the dumps who would be more than happy to prove herself useful.
AyeAvast Text to Abigail K.:I have a blind date with Lex Jamil at 20:00. Please come and assist us on a mission. With that, Jack fixed himself up and headed to the lighthouse,.
"She'll be arriving soon," he said to Lex without preamble, picking up runic bandages to pocket for just in case.

To say Abbi was down in the dumps was only half true because at that particular moment she had forgotten her own misery thanks to the very large stack of medical texts currently surrounding her in the library. They had been picked off the shelves with glee and dumped onto the table only to be mercilessly poured through while the teen jotted down everything that felt important, which was nearly everything she read. So her hand was beginning to cramp and she didn't think she was retaining all the information she needed to, but she was happy. Relatively. When the text came, however, she was even happier because it meant distraction and goodness did she crave that. Without bothering to put away the books, Abbi stuffed her notebook into her bag and hauled herself back to her room. A customary reply was sent, just to be polite. Ol-j-man Text to JackWait so is this a blind date or a mission I don't think a mission counts as a blind date jussayin ಠ_ರೃ But sure thing buddy! (〃⌒▽⌒)八(〃⌒▽⌒〃) Lemme grab my gear and I'll be right on over! They were meeting kind of late for a mission, but a decent time for a date so it seemed like a bit of a draw, all in all. Abbi had failed to ask where the mission was located and therefore had no idea what to pack for and eventually just dressed for neutral weather and brought along another jacket stuffed into her bag. That was also of note because she had forgone the bear backpack in favor of something more adult: a normal backpack with rabbit ears. Very grown up. Bandages always made the cut, along with both Swiss Army knives she'd found, and her journal of recently made first aid tips. With all that in tow, she raced to the lighthouse with a bright grin. Having spotted Jack first, she made a bouncy bee line for him. "Yooooo Jack! Where's your date? I don't know this Lex, but she sounds super cute. Lex Jamil sounds kinda foreigny? What's Lex short for? Alexis? Alexandra? Gosh I'd never want to be called Alexandra, no wonder she goes by Lex!" The other man that Jack was standing near only received a cursory smile and polite head nod, the young girl assuming he was here to help with the portal, not that he was the blind date.

Lex gave a small nod to Jack, faint smile brushing his lips. Ah, so this was the man. "Good. I hope she serves our purposes well tonight." He chuckled, extending a hand to the other Life. "Lex. Pleasure."
Jack seemed like a no nonsense type of person, not even including a preamble to his statement. Quick, sharp, to the point. Maybe his practical joke of setting Ami up on a date with this man hadn't been the best of ideas. Two peas in a pod, and they probably got along famously. He'd already received a cold-shoulder reprimand on her side of things.
Abbi's arrival and ensuing slew of questions made his smile grow a shade wider and he stifled hearty laughter, his boot heels click-clacking up toward the two. "Alexei, actually." He butted in, offering a hand to the redhead. "Charmed."

He had almost missed Abbi's emoticon spamming. Almost.
Deciding against the obvious ***** joke for the sake of professionalism (and because he knew the man could probably make his life hell with too many pokes), Jack shook his hand and instead said, "The therapist-in-training, isn't it? Good luck."
And the words weren't sarcastic. He gave Lex maybe a month into the real job before he'd call it quits.
He braced himself as Abbi arrived, his lips pressing together as she went ahead and dipped right into the awkward pool. Maybe referring to this as a "blind date", however loose the term was being applied, had been a bad idea.
"I suggest getting any runics you're cleared for, just in case," Jack said with a little sigh.

With her concentration directed up and toward Jack, it took the teen a moment to realize that the man she thought to be operating the portal was instead approaching her. When he stepped into her periphery she took a step back and was caught off guard enough by his presence, and that she had been entirely wrong, that he got the jump on making introductions first. "Alexei?" Abbi echoed in a mildly dazed voice, her face going a bit awed as she shoved her hand into the man's. One good shake was given before she smiled bright and wide. "Likewise!" She chirped, her voice sounding far too giddy to emulate the proper purr like the girls in movies did. Instead she continued to smile up at him as though it were perfectly natural to oogle pretty men. Jack's words reminded her of the current goal and she whirled to face him with a brandish of a thumb's up. "Way ahead of you! All packed and ready to get going!" The girl jumped into a turn so she could wiggle her back, and subsequently backpack, at her friend before she hopped back around to face the two men properly. "So where we goin' anyways? Dear Old Jack wouldn't give me details, just a time and a place." Abbi wrinkled her nose affectionately toward Jack. "Spartan to the core!" She meant it in the sweetest, most admirable way possible and thus butted his arm with her shoulder before she gave Lex a most expectant and excited grin.

"Thank you." Was Lex's reply to Jack's well-wishes. How had he known? It wasn't a widespread fact that Lex was gearing up to be the island therapist - he'd only let Ami and a few others know. Ah, yes. Ami. The date. Again, bad idea.
Abbi, he noted, was quite the chipper young thing. Energetic too. She was cute, in a nearly child-like way. He hoped she'd stay that way; innocent and a little sunbeam. Deus tended to strip people of that, make them dark and brooding and much too like those stupid Summer blockbusters that he totally wished he could still see. "I've got bandages." He muttered, tapping the pocket that contained the tin.
To answer Abbi, Lex cleared his throat and looked to the portal. "San Zhi Resort. There's been results of possible paranormal activity lately. We're going to see if we can't find the cause."

"Nice backpack." Jack restrained the impulse to roll his eyes--then remembered that it was in character to do so in response to any affection and allowed himself the freedom. It had been a while since he had seen Abbi, so clearly he had to act as normal as possible regardless of whatever heartache or angst she had suffered--normalcy was the real remedy to any pain.
At least Abbi didn't call him "Jackie". For that, she got a real response in the form of a nudge back. Pure petulance, of course, but it was something.
"As do I," Jack added after Lex, patting his pocket before turning to the portal. "This is the whole group, so I suggest we get moving." He suppose he ought to have asked more about the area, but he decided that lingering would only waste time--that, and knowing the locale didn't seem to help very much if they were going to have to investigate anyway.
The air was cooler on the other side: evening was upon them, and what pods didn't have light were ringed by a slight aura in the dying sun. Jack ran a hand through his hair as he stepped forward to investigate the set directly ahead of them. Nothing. Well, that was as good a start as any.
Except when he turned his head to check that the other two had made it, a loud shunt noise had him whipping his head back to see the pods rearranged. Now mildly curious, he proceeded to stare instead in case they got any funny ideas.

Much too busy bouncing her gaze between the two men with a grin, Abbi missed Jack's eye roll but did catch the nudge he gave her. A more private smile was given to the ground for a variety of reasons, bust mostly because sharing it with her friend would do her little good. Not finding it a bad thing, the girl filed it away and straightened back up to a stance more befitting preparations for an expedition. "San Zhi? And a resort? Huh... Sounds spooky." Especially the paranormal bit. But the girl took a deep breath and squared her shoulders, nodding seriously. "I bet we'll do just fine! And save the day and stuff! And then go for ice cream?" Now she looked mildly hopeful and turned big blue eyes at first Jack then Lex. "Since its like a date and all?" As ready as she'd ever be for the mission, Abbi followed after Jack through the portal, careful to hop through it rather than calmly walk. She was surprised to find that it was much darker and cooler here, glad she had brought along a cardigan though it did require her to stop just outside the portal and remove her backpack to not only retrieve the item but put it on. While she busied herself with that she stole glances at the pod houses, at the bits of trees further off in the distance and when she stood, she heard it. "Gah, what is that?" Abbi didn't bother to hide the disgust in her voice. "What is this music? It sounds like Bjork is dying oh my glob..." Both hands rubbed against her temples, her gaze moved up to see nothing though the music was incredibly close, before it shifted to the two men. "What language is this? It sounds ridiculous..." Her face was screwed up and her hands clenched tight around the straps of her bag, all evidence that Abbi was most displeased.

"Ice cream sounds lovely." Lex murmured as he took the rear of their group, following Abbi into the portal without much inner monologue or thought. This would be a simple mission; investigate, report, get ice cream, sleep. No creepy a** baby dolls, no almost death. They could definitely handle this.
Lex was very glad to have chosen a warmer coat style, and having always preferred layers once he crossed into the chilly climate, pulling his scarf a little tighter around his neck. He piqued his brow at Abbi and Jack both, one for talking about languages and the other for just staring at the pods. "Jack, eyes up front. I don't see any lights or hear any music - same for you Abbi."
Hell, he couldn't see anything. The fog and darkness had joined forces, making the simple task of placing one foot in front of the other without tripping up one of the other two a daunting task in itself. The Lifer had his flashlight trained on the pavement directly in front of his feet, and continued to keep his gaze there, leaving his position in the rear and advancing past Jack and Abbi..
A brief flash of something leering, a face gaunt and skeletal right in the pavement, blank eyes staring right into his greys. The man let out a small gasp and backed up a few steps, inadvertently bumping into Jack and sending him Abbi's way. He spat out a curse, shaking his head. It couldn't be starting this early...

"Fine, ice cream, sure. Abbi, what are you talking about?" Jack asked distractedly with a glance over his shoulder. He couldn't hear any music. He could, however, notice that yet again the pod had shifted when he turned back to look at him: the blue one hadn't been the first in front, he was sure of it. Well, if this was the level of poltergeist hijinx they were getting that night, it was fine by him.
Determined to bother Lex with his very important findings, regardless of the Lifer's orders to not bother with them, Jack turned on his heel in time to see the other man stumble back from something. His fingers itched for his weapon, but he saw nothing in the immediate area before them. Ghosts still? Or were they being toyed with? Oh how he hated that.
"I did," he replied belatedly, almost petulantly. At least Lex wasn't questioning why Abbi was calling this a date. "I suppose what you saw was more interesting."

A surprised but vindicated look, along with an excited jab of her pointer finger, was given to Lex, of who Abbi had decided she already liked quite a lot. He was the Nice Older Brother to Jack's Mean Older Brother routine and the teen was feeling quite pleased about finding herself two Older Brothers. Even if she might not ever tell them that's what she called them... The finger was turned to Jack next, her look turned into something that said "SEE?". That certainly wouldn't endear him to the idea of ice cream any more than he already was, but Abbi didn't care because Lex agreed and that was what mattered. Unfortunately, there was no time to continue to gloat over her success because there was... Something strange going on. "There's music! Something... It sounds really freaky actually." Her hands began to tremble as the wailing only got louder. The first note of authority left Lex's mouth and the ghost inside Abbi's head snapped at her loud enough to almost cover his words. Viveca was not pleased to have her role of 'Danger! Danger Will Robinson' taken from her, but both ghoul and girl were glad for the check. { S'it a song yer hearin'? } She challenged, a cue to think more rationally about this. "I hear music but its probably not... I bet its just..." Saying spooks might make them appear, so Abbi just let it hang in the air, unformed by sound. As the noise got louder, Abbi's eyebrows drew down further until she was practically glaring at their surroundings. Nearly to the point of yelling back just to hear something other than the dreadful noise, a reprieve was given when Lex startled. Both her hands went palm out, as though she would even have a chance of catching either of the taller men, but there was no need for the worry. Still, she moved closer to the them and dared to reach out and wrap a hand around the sleeve of Jack's jacket. "How do we make it stop?"

Lex was about to say something about there being no music, about how it was all in Abbi's pretty little head and that it would all go away soon sweetie. He would have said all that and more if the music didn't start playing in his head as well, his heart quickening and beads of sweat beginning to form on his brow.
This was just like the damn island with the baby dolls again. Lex cleared his throat and kept his index finger trained on Regal's trigger, eyes flashing around the area wildly. One false step, one missed shadow, and they were all goners.
"It's a terrible language. Harsh, vindictive. Worse than Regal's screeching songs." Alexei hissed, wishing he could plug his ears for a few moments. It was all in their heads... there had to be some way to overcome all of these psychological torments. He'd need to study the phenomenon when they got home safe.
"Keep moving. We'll hopefully find nothing but folk tales and urban myths."

"Oh God damn it, now I hear it too," Jack complained, sticking a finger in his ears uselessly. "The hell is a Bjork and why is it dying? Not romantic at all."
He started to take advantage of his long legs and strode far away from where he thought the music was coming from, dragging Abbi with him since she was holding on.
"Jamil, if you still think there's only myths and urban legends walking around, I don't think you get out enough."
