The old-growth forest stretched up to the sky. Large deciduous trees, green with the new leaves of spring, brightened the area. Mid-morning sunlight filtered down to the forest floor, providing nutrients to the knee high ferns that covered the space. The tinkling of a meandering stream broke the quiet of the day, and the scurrying of creatures to and fro the water source could be heard.

Gainesh was asleep, like most owls during the height of day. Tucked up in a small cave, with a couple of ferns to block the entrance, he had no thought to his safety. He'd scoped out the cave a few days ago in a small rolling hill and had stayed nearby since both food and water were so readily available. So far, he'd found the ideal haven for minimal work, plentiful gain. His two owl companions enjoyed the abundance of food as well, and were snuggled in next to him for the day.

Delphy had snuck away from her father and the goat herd months ago. It was time for an adventure, and well, it would never happen if she stayed with them. So she'd set off on her own (as she was known to do from time to time) and was now wandering about by herself. Currently she found herself in a large forest with tall trees, and green ferns. It was lovely...but boring.

So to amuse herself, Delphy pushed over every rock to see what was underneath, looked into every nest to greet its inhabitants, and splashed into every puddle just because she could. It had gotten her into a few dangerous situations so far, but she just accounted it to being part of the experience.

Delphy eye'd a nearby hill, pondering it carefully, eyeing it with suspicion. She moved toward it, knowing from it's shape that there would be a cavern somewhere near the base of it. After years of exploring, she could easily identify when such geographical anomalies would occur. And this was one. Delphy pushed through the ferns and a small gasp escaped her lips. Feathers!

A gasp cut through Gainesh's slumber. His eyes snapped open.

A large golden eye focused on the mare and she paused...taking in its size and proximity. Then she let loose a very high-pitched squeal of fear or excitement, it was hard to tell which.

A morning like this in the forest meant many things to Calla. The gorgeous greens of the trees and new growth, the scuttling of small creatures on the ground, and most of all, the incredible smell of wildflowers coming to bloom in the protection of the other foliage. It was overpowering, and so wonderfully welcomed. The stallion closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, a smile coming to his face with ease. Not far from him, he could hear the babbling of a small brook and the rustle of leaves as a breeze blew through. It seemed to intensify the calmness of the morning, and he secretly wished every day could be like this.

Calla examined the tall ferns before pushing his snout into them, plucking up a fiddlehead as gently as he could. The small, immature ferns were both sweet and bitter, and the stallion favored them over any other food. He was reaching for another one when he heard the shriek of what he could only assume was a mare or small foal. His ears perked and his eyes widened as he pulled his head from the brush, his form rigid and ready to take action. He waited a moment for another sound, and when it didn't come, he thought the worst. Calla wasn't one to butt in where he didn't belong, but his heart raced and his adrenaline caused him to jump into action. He raced toward the direction of the cry, and when he reached his destination, all he saw was a mare on her own by a rocky hill. Confused, he called out to her. "Are you all right? I heard a cry from just down the hill." His breathing was heavy and his hair was a mess from the scramble to the hillside.

A deep voice interrupted Delphy before she had even spoken to the creature before her. Her eyes tracked to the new arrival. A slightly disheveled stallion, of greens and blacks and whites.

"Oh yes! I am more than okay!" She beamed at the stallion, before smiling down at the creature before her. "You sir, are so fluffy!" She retreated a step or two before calling to the stallion again. "You've got to come see this, I've found a monster!"

Gainesh blinked, surprised by the mare and sleepy from his abrupt wake-up call. He could feel the wiggling of his companions behind him. Also disturbed by the mare's cry. Gainesh yawned, before tucking his claws under himself and pulling his large bulk out of his hiddy hole cave and into the forest proper.

He drew himself up to full height, a foot or so larger than the mare, and looked down at her calmly. "That was a most unwelcome screech you made just now...I've never had a wake-up quite like that. I hope I never do again." He cocked an eyebrow at her before releasing another large yawn. He slowly tilted his head, golden eyes shifting to the stallion a ways away. Pitching his voice to carry he addressed the other male. "I'd suggest keeping a firmer hand on your female before she gets herself into some real trouble."

Calla heaved a sigh of relief at the news of the mare's safety. His interest was piqued a bit when she began speaking to something else, and he squinted through the foliage to try to make out the shape within the cave. "A... Monster?" He raised a brow. She certainly didn't act as if it were a true monster, but he made his way over with caution just in case. Surely he could still be eating fiddle heads instead of being caught up in this mess. Oh bother.

His brows furrowed when the fluffy creature arose, and he couldn't quite tell what it was. A Soquili, no doubt, but the mare was correct in her previous statement about his fluff. His coloring was quite odd, yet quite familiar. He was so entranced with the stallion's appearance that he nearly missed his comment. Calla's eyes widened and his ears perked before he stuttered a bit. "M-my..." He shook his head vigorously. "Oh, no, you've been mistaken! I've never seen this mare in my life, see. I simply heard the cry, which I thought was out of distress, and came to make sure everything was all right, you see."

His ears flattened a bit as he addressed the mare. "N-not that I wouldn't be proud to have you as my mare, see, I just didn't want him getting the wrong idea, and I don't want you to be offended by me not claiming you." A faint blush crossed his cheeks as he tried to explain himself.

Delphy stared as the fluffy behemoth arose out of its den, her mouth hanging slightly ajar. She hadn't realized it would be so large when it was awake and moving. Not that it really mattered to her. She slowly did a circle around it, mouth still slightly open..."woooow, you're huge!" She seemed to be talking to herself, since she didn't address the creature directly with her comment. In fact, she seemed to be ignoring the two stallion's conversation altogether. That is... until the green stallion said something that made Delphy pause. "N-not that I wouldn't be proud to have you as my mare, see, I just didn't want him getting the wrong idea, and I don't want you to be offended by me not claiming you." She looked away from the fluffy, as she had now mentally named the creature, and stared at the green stallion from below her brown locks. A moment passed and then she began to giggle, the volume of which increasing as she noted his blush. "Oh, but hunny! You told me we'd be together forever!" Delphy's tone was filled with mock-dismay and laughter.

Gainesh's golden gaze had been tracking the female as she circled him, but he was listening to the stallions words. So they weren't together then? Interesting that two would happen upon him at the same time. He had his doubts about the likelihood of that. So when the mare started tittering over the male's words, and saying the opposite of the male, Gainesh was more than a bit perplexed. Were they lying to him? or perhaps making fun of him? Or maybe this was a trap? Weary now, Gainesh retreated a step away from both of them and rustled his feathers a bit, stretching them out. Preparing them for flight if need be. Also, he quietly clicked his tongue against his beak...a secret signal to his owl companions still in the cave.
