Then at the dawning, as day was breaking,
The wrath of man to dragon was known;
Then after wassail was wail uplifted,
loud moan in the morn. The mighty fell,
gold beauty, bronze lord,
the blue, green and brown keened,
heart struck: too cruel that sorrow,
too long, too loathsome.

*******************************************************************************Excerpt from the Fall of Benden by Harper Hannare

[ The Benden Massacre ]

At the dawn of the 4th Pass, now more than 500 turns ago, the Thread did not fall and the dragonmen knew not why.

They asked the Starsmiths but their instruments held no answers.

They asked the Harpers but history revealed no clues.

The Red Star gleamed bright and bloody but the Thread did not fall, and the Holders grew restless. If they did not need the dragonmen to defend them from Thread then why did they need them at all? The Lords of Pern came together demanding that, with immediate effect, each Weyr permit but one gold to clutch at a time and that riders take on extra duties in order to earn their bread.

The rider of golden Sereth, the supreme leader of Benden Weyr, called a meeting to discuss the issue. As the leader of the largest Weyr, they brought it into their own home. Not neutral ground, precisely, but somewhere which had the space to house the Lord Holders and their retinues as well as the rest of Pern’s gold riders and their Weyrleaders and retinues.

Unfortunately, not everyone came in with the same good intentions. A cabal of Lord Holders - as the later investigation showed - smuggled in men-at-arms under the guise of their servants and as traders. When the moment to strike - cutting off the heads of the hydra all at once, so to speak - came, the riders gathered to hash out the problem were caught utterly unawares. Knives were drawn on them at breakfast in the dining hall, and neither weyrling or greybeard were spared.

Most of Pern’s high-ranking riders died in the first two or three minutes, the chaos of betrayal not helping. Most riders in that time period barely knew one end of a sword from another, let alone went armed in their own halls, and the slaughter was terrible.

Sereth’s rider managed to - gathering up what untrained forces she could muster - punch a way out into the bowl with zir juniors, mounting a fierce fight to buy them time to get zir subordinates away between. After zie was badly wounded, zir First Wingleader made the decision to get zir on zir dragon and get her out - clearly the Lord Holders (or those who had participated) intended to wipe out every gold they could put their hands on and that was surely who they were targeting. He put zir (possibly against zir protests - one version of the story involves zir being punched in the nose to get her onto zir dragon) and as many wounded as he could into the air, hoping to at least save them.

It took several days to establish that they were truly missing, lost between, and not just dead or in some other Weyr - the chaos of the massacre left Weyrs across Pern reeling and scrambling to make up for the loss of their senior riders and most of a Weyr of dragons.

A few short sevendays later, Thread returned.

[ Out of the Past ]

The Third Sevenday of Month One, Forth Turn of the Sixth Pass

It was a bally cold afternoon, one of those perfect crisp winter days that Be'man loved. Of course the wingleader of 5th-3 loved a great range of things including brandy and a good pipe, he was currently enjoying both of those just as much as the fine view of the Weyrbowl that his weyr ledge offered. With no Fall to trouble them today and his wing on a rest day the giant of a man was taking the opportunity to simply relax with his backside on a cushion, his back against his dragon, his fat firelizard in his lap, and his legs dangling into the void.

He might have sat there contentedly for quite some time had the air above him not cracked like the largest whip in the universe.

Be'man scrambled to his feet sending his one-winged firelizard Muck scrabbling for the safety of the ledge as huge hulking Floreth jerked awake at the unmistakable sound. A formation of dragons had just appeared but the wingleader knew full well that none was expected at this hour. Be'man shielded his eyes against the bright winter sun and for a moment he thought they were playing tricks on him but Floreth's vision soon confirmed what he thought he had seen. There was a good half wing of dragons up there at the very least but one of them was -

Gold indeed she was, the sheen on her hide was unmistakable. Also unmistakable was the force of her out-swelling emotions; the sudden distress and pain struck Floreth and every other dragon in the Weyr like a brick. The shock of the gold's feelings made even sturdy Floreth waver and Be'man worried for a moment about the effect it might have on the junior Weyrlings.

Then she spoke, once again touching ever dragon in the Weyr. The voice wavered, trailed off, and the wave of emotions was snuffed out like a candle. Then the gold began to fall from the sky, as did several of her companions.

Be'man swore, dropping his pipe and drink.

Floreth bugled and launched himself into the air.

As his dragon and many other dragons took to the sky Be'man stared upwards. He knew his history. He knew who that was. What he did not know was how she was here or more to the point how she was here now. Was it possible to jump through time itself? It seemed that despite the absurdity of the idea it most certainly was. Be'man turned and sprinted out of his weyr.

Floreth made straight for the tumbling queen but as he drew near her something troubled his great ponderous brain. small.> Smaller than he was, as small as a brown. Smaller swifter dragons than he reached and grasped the miniature gold before the large bronze could and so he banked to catch a falling green in his claws instead. She was tiny - tiny - like a half grown weyrling and yet her form was wiry, tough, fully adult, and so too was the unconscious rider on her back. Both the green and her rider were wounded, he could smell the blood and ichor.

Be'man said to his dragon as he pounded through the halls of the Weyr, making for the nearest exit to the Weyrbowl. Shards, the riders who had been lost between at the great and terrible Benden massacre! It could not- could not be and yet apparently it was.

Floreth confirmed as he set his limp cargo gently down outside the infirmary cavern, the ground was already dotted with green robed humans holding bags of supplies and wearing serious expressions and he could see more hastening towards them.

Be'man skidded out of a narrow exit mainly used by drudges and raced towards the gathering crowd, picking out several of the other wingleaders' dragons already keeping back curious onlookers. Fortunately as a wingleader himself Be'man had license to be a curious onlooker; he stepped under Justicath's outstretched wing with a nod for the brown and moved forward towards the dragons fresh out of the distant past.

___________________________________

The news spread through the Weyr like wildfire and within minutes the infirmary was inundated with curious candidates, caverns workers and riders alike claiming small aliments in the hopes that they might sneak a peak at the people who had supposedly just popped out of the past. All of said hopefuls however were out of luck, the strangers had been carried or ushered into one of the infirmary's wards and the door was being guarded by the wingseconds of second wing and third one. The only person who persuaded the serious men and woman to let him pass - beside the healers who hastened too and fro - was Weyrmaster Venk. The dragon infirmary cavern was likewise out of bounds to anyone without an injured bondmate and Hiraeth and the Headwoman's dragon Verth sat with a circle of veteran dragons marshalled by Le'bon in a semi circle around the exhausted old timer dragons with their wings raised to give them privacy. Hiraeth and Verth alone sat facing inward and anyone who was in the infirmary cavern would get the impression that a conversation was indeed taking place.

The Headwoman gathered together the wingleaders and the Weyrharper in Weyrhealer Amarid's office so as to be close to their mysterious guests while they discussed what was to be done. Attempts to sneak firelizards in to listen to the talk were firmly rebuffed, as were requests for information from the dragons of those present. Attempts to engage the strange dragons also failed.

This lack of information of course sent the Weyr's gossip engine into overdrive; it really was Sereth but she would soon die, it was not Sereth but a tiny gold bred in secret somewhere by somebody for poorly defined nefarious purposes, it was a mass hallucination brought on by something that had been put in the bread by candidates for a prank. Those who held Sofianist beliefs were largely beside themselves with excitement, though some feared that Sereth had appeared to punish the Weyr because people had not lived decently enough.

As the hours passed the dragons of the Weyr keened at intervals as some of the strangers succumbed to their wounds and disappeared into the void of between for the last time, but still there was no word from the meeting in Amarid's office.

Eventually, as night fell, Verth reached out to address the dragons of the Weyr. In a voice like silk and like the cold of between he announced that Headwoman On'ya had offered sanctuary to the strangers at the very least until their wounds healed, and that her decision was backed by a majority vote of the council of wingleaders in the absence of a Weyrleader. The old blue also confirmed that so far as they were able to ascertain these dragons had indeed come from the past and the gold amongst them was indeed Sereth. Finally he requested - though his tone made it a command - that the dragons and riders be given peace and privacy. They all had a great deal to take in, to say the least.

[ What's on Offer? ]

Glad you asked! There are two contests in this event as well as free for all character creation!

The contests are for:
- Gold Sereth and her rider. The gender of Sereth's rider is up to you.
- Riders who held important ranks at the start of the 4th Pass.

The free for all allows you to make riders who were present at the massacre but held no special rank. They may ride any colour dragon other than gold and be from any Weyr that exists in our canon! You may also make non riders in this free for all if you like.

Please read on for more information on how to get your hands on one of these time lost characters.

[ How long will this event last? ]

This event is open now and will run until Saturday 6th September at 11:59GMT.

You may edit contest entries as much as you like before this but when the contest closes this thread will be locked.

[ Rules, Criteria and Information ]

[ At the dawn of the 4th Pass ]

Please read this information carefully before entering for Sereth or creating one of the other riders who came forward in time; there are quite a lot of differences between Then and Now that need to be taken into account!

If you're unsure of anything or want specific information about something that's not covered here just let us know! You can PM Con or Tawny or ask your question here in this thread. If you PM us we will post up your question and our answer but we will not post your name.

Without further ado here are some things you should know:

- Leadership in Pern's Weyrs rested fully with the Weyrmaster or mistress and their Weyrleader. The Weyrmistress ruled domestic affairs while the Weyrleader was in charge of military affairs. Both were involved in external politics.
- The flights of the senior gold gold decided Weyrleadership, which essentially gave the Weyrmaster and his dragon freedom to choose their Weyrleader. Lots of hopeful bronze riders therefore sought to curry favour with the senior pair, or to manipulate them if possible.
- Riders were not involved in policing at this time. Their role was essentially as presented in the books; during Passes they flew Thread and during Intervals they flew messages and acted as couriers. They also offered aid during and after natural disasters but unlike HR's modern 4th wings for example they were not well trained to do so.
- All wings did the same duties except for the First Wing of each Weyr. This wing was made up mainly of bronze riders who would accompany the Weyrleader and Weyrmistress or master on diplomatic trips as honour guards. They would also do some message work and act as couriers but only for Lord Holders or very influential (usually rich) Holders or lesser holds.
- As most of a Weyr's bronzes were either in their First Wing or wingleaders there weren't many bronzes of ordinary rank in other wings. Female bronze riders of Benden or Fort are most likely to be in this position, a male bronze rider would have had to seriously screw up to end up serving as a wingrider anywhere but a First Wing.

- Sexism and colour bias were rife in all of Pern's Weyrs though less so at Igen, they had at least two female wingleaders at this time. Then, as now, Benden Weyr did not search female candidates unless there was a gold egg on the sands. Women who impressed other colours were given the same training as men but could never hope to achieve leadership positions regardless of merit. Fort Weyr followed this same pattern but the other Weyrs of Pern did Search female candidates, however their chances of achieving any position of importance were very slim indeed.
- All the Weyrs of Pern accepted people of all sexualities freely, but most Holds tended to be more hidebound than they are today so Holdborn people may have found this a big culture shock!
- Then, as now, transgender people were fully accepted by the Weyrs of Pern. In short transmen would have had all the same opportunities as cis men, whereas transwomen got the short end of the stick just as cis women did. Non binary people were a bit of a grey area; if they tended to present as male on the job they would have a chance of moving up the career ladder but they would have to be exceptional to do so, unless of course they happened to luck out and become Weyrleader!
- Benden Weyr was the largest and most powerful Weyr on Pern, even more so than today. They had a lot of political clout.
- At the start of the 4th Pass riders were aware that their ancestors came from the stars. Details were beginning to get fuzzy as the information began to be repressed by the Harpers, who felt it dangerous to teach people about it just in case they took it into their heads to try to return to the southern continent and look for Landing.
- Likewise riders would be aware that originally people settled the southern continent but that they fled a natural disaster during the First Interval.

[ Demographics of the time lost ]

- One gold; Sereth the senior queen of Benden Weyr. The gender of her rider is up to you.
- Potentially a few ranking riders from any of Pern's Weyrs. Most of these will be bronzes and ridden by men but exceptions are possible especially from Igen.
- Other riders of Benden Weyr; any coloured dragons but gold, riders maybe be of any gender.
- A few pairs from other Weyrs; any coloured dragons but gold, riders maybe be of any gender.
- The great and the good of Pern were present at the massacre so there was a strong concentration of bronzes, don't worry about there being 'too many' if you and a lot of others wish to make one.
- ADDED CLARITY: The chances of women achieving significant rank (wingleader, wingsecond and so on) are slim to none at Benden and Fort. There is a slight possibility at other Weyrs, and a fair possibility at Igen.

[ Dragon Sizes ]

Yes, in the days of yore the dragons were smaller! Please take note of the following size limitations when making your riders and dragons.

Greens: 15' long, ~5' tall at the shoulder. 95% of green dragons from this time measured between 12' and 16' long.
Blues: 20' long, ~5.5' tall at the shoulder. 95% of blue dragons from this time measured between 15' and 21' long.
Browns: 24' long, ~6' tall at the shoulder. 95% of brown dragons from this time measured between 20' and 26' long.
Bronzes: 28' long, ~7.5' tall at the shoulder. 95% of bronze dragons from this time measured between 24' and 30' long.
Golds: 32' long, ~8' tall at the shoulder. Sereth must be between 30' and 34' long.

Yes, big men on small greens did look mildly hilarious but as dragons can lift as much as they think they can - and dragons in general certainly believe they can carry their rider - it didn't present and practical problems other than a lack of room for passengers.

Greens were never smaller than stated here, original blues were about the same size as 4th Pass greens, the first browns and bronzes were about the same size as 4th Pass blues, and Golds were originally about the size of 4th Pass browns. It was during the 4th Pass that greens began to grow larger, and the other colours grew too. A 4th Pass gold is about the same size as one of our 6th Pass browns, and a bronze is about the size of a present day blue!

[ Rules ]

- All usual shop rules and policies apply.
- Be cool.
- Don't whine please.
- Don't attempt to intimidate, harass, or otherwise interfere with other players.
- Ask canon questions if you need to, we will make the answer known to all! You can ask in private if you like and ask for the question to be anonymous.
- Remember that this is supposed to be fun!
- Post entries in this thread
- After the event ends the winners will have to go through the normal approval process.
- You may enter as many times as you like.
- Sorry but if you already own a gold dragon you cannot win Sereth.
- You can enter for Sereth and for a ranking character and potentially win both! Chances aren't high but we won't rule it out. The contest for Sereth will be decided first so entering for a ranking character does not affect your chances at her.
- You can enter either or both contests and also make a wingrider in the character creation free for all but you can only win a maximum of two characters from this event. If you have created a wingrider and happen to be selected for both Sereth and a ranking rider you will be asked to choose which of the three to give up.
- You can make up to two wingriders under the character creation free for all but as above remember you can only get two characters over all so if you also entered for and won a contest character you would have to give one up.

[ Judging criteria for contests ]

- The prompt is most important part of your entry. We are not looking for a full profile at this stage. You can put a fair amount of detail into the bullet points if you want to but focus your energy on the prompts.
- We will be judging on the originality and believability of concepts.
- Be sure to pay attention to both dragon and rider, they are equally important.
- It is very important that we can tell you took into account the information about the time they come from. You don't have to have your characters buy into mainstream views but whether they do or not those views, and the position they have held, should affect them.
- There is no such thing as tl;dr, write as much as you like!
- Don't worry if details in one of your prompts clash with details in somebody else's, if necessary clashing details can be sorted out between winners when the event closes.

[ Special note ]

Understandably some of the riders who have suddenly found themselves displaced by five and a half centuries may wish to return from whence they came. Anyone who attempts this however will never be heard from again and records don't give any clues about what might have happened to them; it's possible that they made it home and went on to live successful lives but it's more likely that they were simply lost between forever. Basically there's no rule against making a character and having them choose to try to get back to their own time but if they actually attempt the jump you will never be able to play them again in Dragonbraved.

[ The Benden Queen ]

"Through the Weyr then went the Weyr’s own Master,
to younger and older everywhere
carried the cup, till come the moment,
when the gold-graced one, the lordly-hearted,
to Lord Crom bore the beaker of mead.
They greeted Crom’s Lord, Lord they thanked,
in wisdom’s words, that their will was granted,
that at last on an ally their hope could lean
for comfort in need"

If you want to become the player of Gold Sereth and her rider you are in the right place! See below for prompts and the form you will need to fill in to enter for her. Please be sure to read all of the rules, judging criteria, and setting information for the time she has come from in the preceding post before you enter.

[ Prompts ]

1. Who did you leave behind? Show us a time Sereth and her rider were happiest - or saddest.
2. So you just woke up and discovered that you’ve gone five hundred turns into the future due to really shaffing up your co-ordinates. Probably. Maybe. You’re no longer politically relevant, and everyone you love died centuries ago. How are you dealing with this? How do you feel? Is it a relief? A chance to build something new? Or will you never bounce back?
3. The massacre - did Sereth’s rider see it coming? Or did it come as a complete shock? How did they manage to get out into the bowl? Did they go willingly on Sereth or have to be put on her?
4. What was their relationship with their Weyrleader like? Were they close? Was it a business-like relationship, or more of a romantic one?

[ I Used to be Somebody ]

Cold as death, death-bearing,
Stay and die, unguided.
Brave and braving, linger.
This way was twice decided.

This is your chance to make a character who used to hold an important rank! What rank? Any rider rank other than gold rider ranks actually! You want to make the Weyrleader of Benden at the time? Go ahead and make the Weyrleader of Benden! All you have to do is fill out the form below and when the deadline passes we will select some concepts to go on to full character application. As well as reading all of the relevant information and making sure your character fits in with it please take note of the following:

- You character will not retain whatever rank they held in their own time, present day High Reaches isn't giving out free wings to their time lost refugees for example! Some of the other characters who came forward may treat your character with the deference that befits their former rank but then again they might not. You can of course try to advance your character's rank through IC opportunities but it won't be given to them as a matter of course.
- You can't 'shotgun' a position, so for example as many people as feel like it can make a concept for the Weyrleader of Fort but obviously only one could potentially be selected.
- If you like you can post a character concept here and also put up a placeholder WIP in the character creation opportunity below for that same pair. If you don't win the ranking version you can make them as a normal rider, but if you do you can just alter your WIP in character applications to be the ranked version.
- Barring duplicates we may choose to accept all the concepts posted or we might pick out just one or two, no promises either way!

[ Prompts ]

1. A slice of life from the last turn of the third interval - try to give some focus to their duties (if they have any!). If you want to know more, or get any details about daily life, contact Con or Tawny, who will consult.
2. Thread hasn’t returned, and the holders are getting… well, irritable, to say the least. You’ve seen the hostility yourself when you’ve visited your home hold, and you’ve even heard stories of riders being attacked or chased out. How do you deal with this? Can you deal with this?
3. Give us a battle scene from the massacre - how did your character become aware of what was going on? How did they survive?
4. Welcome to the future. Your people are gone, your rank is gone, and… well, everything is different. How are you coping with it? Are you badly injured? Can you cope with it?

[ New World, New Opportunities? ]

Wheel and turn
Or bleed and burn.
Fly between,
Blue and green.
Soar, dive down,
Bronze and brown
Dragonmen must fly
When Threads are in the sky.

Here is your chance to make ordinary wingriders who came forward with the group! What do you have to do to create a pair? Just go to character applications and post them up! Please title your thread as follows:

[Time Custom] (rider name goes here) of (dragon colour) (dragon name)

As with the contest characters please make sure that you read the information about the time these characters come from.

The only restriction on colours is 'no golds', you will not be judged negatively if you want to make a bronze! Even if you are making two characters and want to make both of them bronzes feel free to do so regardless of how many other metallic dragons you own. Equally you're free to make two greens or any other combination, make what you want to not what you think you ought to.

If you want to you are also free to make a character without a dragon who fought with the riders during the massacre (you can assume they were evacuated by one of the riders who made it to the present) or a dragonless character who made it forward with their dragon, but whose dragon succumbed to wounds. If you want to do this just cut out the irrelevant sections of the form and add what their rank was in their own time. Characters without a dragon do not count towards your two character limit from this event.

This is a one time opportunity! Once the winners of the contests are announced new WIP profiles cannot be made for characters who came forward from the Benden Massacre. The characters made in this event will be the only ones who made it IC.

Please use the following form:

RIDER
Name: (Please note that female riders of Fort and Benden did not elide their names at this time. Female riders from other Weyrs were allowed to elide but not obligated to as they are today.)
Age:
Gender:
Rank: Wingrider of (insert wing number) wing, (insert name of Weyr) Weyr.

Question time!
Do you want the Queen’s info bullet point or whole 9-yards?
Can a woman bronze rider be Wing Second for First Wing from the time lost group?
PostPosted: Sun Aug 24, 2014 12:47 am

- bullet points are shiny with us, just think 'em out <3

- it's veryveryvery unlikely that a woman would be able to achieve that sort of rank ( :c ) or any at all, even on a bronze, at Benden. It was a little less conservative then it is today, but not much.

- I think it would be more likely that they would have come from Igen, which was pretty progressive even then (but there's still a thing there that they'd probably have to be very much better then any male candidates) - it's possible that they were being pushed forward or trained by a particularly progressive Wingleader? They might be originally *from* Benden, even, but have transferred for the opportunity.

Concinnity Blaise

What about a female bronze rider for wing second of another Wing?
We were thinking born at Benden. Could they transfer to Igen for training? How would that be looked on at Benden, and would they be allowed to transfer back after training was done?
PostPosted: Sun Aug 24, 2014 11:07 am

The chances of a woman getting to be wingsecond of any wing at Benden are slim to none I'm afraid. She could certainly have been born at Benden, Impressed there and transferred to Igen but Benden would have little interest in having her back at a later date. So far as they're concerned (because they're sexist tailforks) she should never have Impressed a man's dragon in the first place. They might possibly allow her to transfer back but only as an ordinary wingrider.

Yep! She would have to be good at what she did but they did exist back then. =D
