Years past, dreams still haunt
A gray tipped muzzle poked out of the wicker shelter, the protection becoming too confined for the small creature inside. Scents assaulted her, what had always been blocked and faint now becoming almost overwhelmingly strong. A small nicker of disapproval, it was the first sound she had heard in a long time, her own voice. It made her jump, and as she did the basket lid flew off from over her body, a breeze brushed over her sensitive fur and she opened big blue eye's curiously. The first view she had to witness, vast stars, and dark shifting shadows everywhere. the breeze continued to move those shadows, but her eye's, full of innocent light, were caught by the lights in the sky. a bit of time later and the young filly would learn, she was utterly forgotten, and alone, nothing but those stars would ever truly be her companion....In the present, a haunted heart aches much more then that of the past. Blue eye's, the same once filled with curiosity, now filled with a guarded since of understanding, hopeful but otherwise untrusting. flew wide, 'It was that dream... why must I remember this... always this...' The white coated mare gave a soft snort as she pulled herself from out of the long grass next to the cluster of trees she had hidden in to rest. A wide yawn leaving her grey tipped muzzle, her nose focused on the scents around, while she shook off the last of sleep. A breeze, her ever companion, tickled her mane brushing though it with the gentlest of caresses, the only true touch she had ever known. She let out a sigh and looked around herself, the forest was thick around her, and yet so was the grass, the air moist as the shade of trees gave a darker look to the ground below, holding in the moisture that would otherwise escape to the clouds above. It was late summer, humid in this particular location. But the breeze of fall was beginning to be felt even here. It would be another marking of her age, she thought without emotion. her blue eye's caught the flutter of wings as a little red bird darted from a tree, she was entranced by the action only a moment more, her mind intentionally blocking out thoughts on fall and her birthday, then turned her attention back to her nose. This was how she directed her life, by the scents around her, the breeze was pushing her towards the sea. A trot leading into a silent gallop, her hooves were quiet, delicate graceful strides helped her follow the scent of salt, the feel of warmth. " I seem to be making a habit of this, Its a different path... but the ocean always seems warmer in the winter." she tossed her tail in an amused flick while dodging the trees, " a day... at most..." she thought absently of the distance left, following her instinct to stay both away from others, and warm. She remained hidden, passing an entire herd and doing her best to never be noticed she slowed her pace. The sounds of a herd were something she always tried to ignore, but laughter caught her attention. The joy of foals giggling, she slowed even more, subconsciously moving closer to the clearing along her left side. A mother was guiding her twins, as it looked. They were a herd of winds, the foals were fluttering their wings excitedly. One of them took flight, actually stayed in the air for a good bit before landing clumsily. The adults around them cheered, excitedly congratulating the little one. The mother beamed and guided her second foal, this one two remained air born for a while. The pride in that mares eyes, watching her children succeed. Evea never stopped completely, her hooves continued to move silently as she slide along, under the cover of trees and tall grass forever hidden. Bright blue eye's filled with moisture as she stared with longing at the huge group. Mares, stallions, foals, all living together, loving one another, sharing in the joy's and sorrows of life. She shook her head as a huge rock passed between her and the gathering, trying to get the thoughts from surfacing, the feelings she contained, finally she stopped, for a moment she rested her cheek against the stone, pawing the earth with an anxious right hoof. Just on the edge of that rock and the clearing, her eye's glistened as she watched them between blades of gently swaying grass, just another shadow under the trees. She had never had that, the life those foals had. She had never known anyone really, come across several yes, even holding conversations and traveling with another for a small amount of time. But she had never experienced acceptance, love, companionship, friendship. Her furred cheeks were moist now, but she ignored them as she took a deep breath and moved away not seeing the wet spot left on the rock, sparing one last look as both foals now fluttered around in the air, there mother and apparently father joining them. Turning her gaze back to the path ahead, the one her nose created for her, she took off, silent as ever as her hooves moved across the earth like water, fluid grace something she had naturally harnessed. Growing up alone, she had no idea she was graceful, no idea she was pretty, no idea of her worth, her talent. She only knew of the path ahead, of the silence. It was a peaceful feeling, or so she told herself everyday. The absolute quiet, only broken by smaller creatures, anything larger and her ears or nose would steer her clear of them. Intentionally avoiding others, telling herself they weren't worth knowing. that she was free only by being alone, that the tears that fell were for the ones who would never know the silence. But lying to yourself only works for so long...and her heart ached for more...

A memory is a scar on the heart, a wound to the soul...It had happened again, this feeling hurt worse then getting a thorn embedded in a sensitive area... She thought angrily. Tail flicking in reflection to her emotional turmoil, blue eye's were filled with tears. Still moving at full throttle, heart pounding, lungs burning. She allowed her thoughts to process the past winter and then some. Even as each memory stabbed deeper like an icicle stabbing itself into her very soul. Not all bad memories mean the future to be as dark? do they?much before current situation A filly, fur of white mane and tail the shade of dying wheat, such a light brown almost grey. were knotted into messy braids, curtsy of the young Indian girl who at the moment, busied herself with planting many different color flowers into the fillies mane. Evea rested lazily on her side, for the moment filled with a happy sort of feeling, something she was only just learning to enjoy. Ever since she had helped this girl out of the stream she fell into, they had spent every day together. It was no concern to either female that they had no families, they just enjoyed each others company.
Hardly able to communicate as it was Evea followed instinct with understanding the young human. She could read the girls emotions, and the girl could read her's almost as well. The days were growing warmer now, she noticed as her friend wondered off to hunt. She chewed contently on a bit of milk weed. Her legs had gone through a sort of growth spurt, making her look even more gangly as she lay sprawled on the ground, listening for her companion's heart beat. It had become almost as soothing as the wind, like water to a thirsty throat, This sensation was not something she knew how to handle, it was new and wonderful, they had only been together for a month at most, but already, she felt like the world revolved around that human child, like a sister, like family.
As if an icy bucket of water had been poured over her head, a piercing scream filled the air. Fear pulsed through her veins as the young filly hopped to her clumsy hooves and took off, never so terrified in her life. Blue eye's lit with furry as they focused on the scene in front of her, Her human was huddled in the knot of a tree, Three Kalona foals, all larger then herself seemed to paw at the entrance to the hole. They were each covered in fur, and it made Evea realize they were not what at first she thought them to be, that the dark scent coming off of them was much stronger then any Kalona she had sniffed in her short life, as if sensing her fear all three turned their blood red eye's onto frightened blue.
Each were covered in a pelt like a fox, they spoke with a growl as they started talking among themselves, Her friend, she noticed now, was quietly sneaking out from her hole. "S...St...Stop!" she screamed, trying to buy her much smaller friend the time needed to escape. They laughed, one voice was higher pitched, female. The walker female snorted before growling out. "Looks like we found better prey brothers..." Though Eve couldn't speak well, she still could understand just fine. Her dainty hooves took a few tentative steps back as two of the three took a paw forward. The Indian girl was now running as fast as she could away, She had left Evea alone against all three, and was heading a direction opposite of their clearing.
This concerned the small filly enough that she didn't notice when the third foal, had come up behind her....
Beaten and bloody, She had managed to escape, but she never saw the girl again. The girl had betrayed her, left her to die when she had come to help... Evea thought both full of pain and spitting mad as she limped along the same stream she had rescued her friend " Some... F-friend... w...wh...who needs f-friends..." Tears flooded her vision...------ Only one other time, had she trusted another, It had ended so badly, she had been abandoned by that girl, she had known from that moment never to trust, that she had never and would never have a friend. And yet here she went, Becoming friends with that old shaman woman. Trusting her to be there... New memories will always hurt worse ((Memory)) Her hoof was stuck, it was absolutely killing her as the trap set for smaller game by humans tightened with each pull. She had been trapped here for two days, her stomach rumbled as she let out another ear splitting whinny, never before in her life, had she needed so badly for someone to come along and help her. She had been ok with being alone, done so quite well since she had emerged from her basket by that tree, alone in the dark. But here she was, at the mercy of anyone who came upon her. ------- The jingling startled her awake, it was early morning and she absently pulled once more at the now obviously wounded hoof, still trapped. Her ears flicked as the heavy foot falls of a human filtered through her thirst and hunger induced haze. Blue eye's alert she nearly ripped her own leg off attempting to escape whoever it was.....
An older human broke the bush around her, bright brown eye's filled with concern met terrified blue, they stared one another down for a moment, then the human spoke. And for the first time in her life, Evea understood her, abit brokenly. "Oh you poor dear... let me help you..." the voice was wispy, cracked with age, but gentle. Eve's ears flicked up in curiosity and the woman took that as her Que to come closer an old stick with bells holding some of her weight..... ------------- Winter had hit hard, Eve snorted in annoyance, usually she would be along the ocean's coast, where snow never touched. That annoyance turned to simple joy as her blue eye's watched the older woman busy about the outside of her teepee. The scent of pain coming off of her. "Mami, your hurting yourself in this cold... go back to your fi...fire..." She was proud of herself, almost a full sentence with no stutters. Mami had been practicing with her for the entire time they had spent together, it was the longest Ever that she had stuck around another living being, and at the moment she saw absolutely no reason to leave. In response to her comment came a gentle laugh. "Young dove, you will freeze if I don't ... you up..." no matter that she could speak the Soq language, it was still broken. But as if she realized that part of her words made no since she flashed a thick blanket at the young mare she had affectionately nicknamed Dove. "This, warm you it will" Evea nodded in understanding and thanks as she let the woman place the large blanket over her shoulders. her heart feeling something close to strong affection, something she hadn't felt in years.... ----------- "Here Dove. Eat" The old voice matched the smile on her face as Mami placed a bowl before Evea, it smelt of fire, and warmth. Everything was frozen, there was nothing to eat and with the snow as hard as it was falling, she had no way to find food. The liquid was indeed warm, it soothed her throat, and her heart filled with love for the older woman. "Thank you" she whispered back. Mami smiled from the entrance of her teepee, the place she had chosen to sit while she ate, so that they might eat together. A thick blanket wrapped over her slender shoulders. ------- A deep lung rattling cough filtered out to Evea's ears, Mami had not left the confines of her bed in days, being so far from any other humans meant, if she didn't leave, no one would be coming to check on her for a long while yet. white ears went back in agitation, the fire in the teepee had gone out last night, and with the early spring rain...
"Mami?... " Silence, the morning had been too quiet, and dread began to fill Evea's very soul. Something was wrong, no coughs, nothing. And a scent... "No. No... N..N-No! M-Mami?!!!" her gentle voice became urgent as she fought past the scent to poke her nose into the teepee. "Mami?" She nearly whispered as blue eye's took in the still form, the much to still form. 'No... no... she ...she can't... she... she wouldn't!' Her nose didn't lie, and denying it wasn't something she could do for long... her friend, her first friend... the first person she had actually let into her heart, since... 'Shes gone... s-she's left me...' with that whisper hooves turned, and a white form disappeared into the trees. Finally, so out of breath she was foaming at the mouth, Evea collapsed to her side, tears flooding her vision as she lay in the melting snow, the scent of death long gone, though even as fresh spring began to filter through, all it seemed she could smell... all she to feel in her heart, was death. Another she had trusted with a small piece of her had left her... left her alone. The pain was so strong, so overwhelming she heaved, feeling completely lost, useless, betrayed, alone. Alone, is much safer then allowing others to hurt you.A month since that woman had left her, Anger had turned to a dull numbness. Acceptance that another she had loved was gone, that she would be alone. Her gaze was filled with the foamy white of massive waves as they crashed onto the light sand, shores. Hoof prints the only tell to which direction she had traveled. Birds flew over head, shells clinked gently against rocks to her right. The sun dipped deeper into the ocean, allowing it'self to be swallowed once more by night, the breeze tugged at her mane, her tail swished with it as well. She felt nothing, she was alone, alone was the only thing that was safe... she was ok with that, or so she told herself... Lies as they were... ((She turned the death into a betrayal, unable to handle it as it is.))
