The day was overcast and grey as the Kalona-Wind mare spiraled toward the ground. The woods beneath her were dark and looming, the grass bright emerald. There was no haunting shadow to be seen, though that wasn't saying much. The stallion she was searching for wasn't the sort to make a spectacle of himself. He was much more likely to haunt the woods and sneak up behind her just to prove a point.

He'd always done something similar when they were foals, at any rate. It made her practice at being better at stealth, but in the meantime it had startled her every time. Silver eyes crinkled in a smile as the dainty mare snorted, shaking her head. 'I never thought I would say this, but... I miss you.'

Keshani Avenara landed in a graceful flurry of hooves and feathered wings, shaking herself from nose to tail as she settled. For a moment her feathered wings were stretched sky high and proud, before she fluffed them one final time and folded them to her back. The woods around her were gone silent, all the wildlife scattering at the sound of a predator in their midst. She flicked an ear and grinned to herself at the sound of retreating feet and paws. The game was smarter, here so close to a Kalona's den... They had to be, so they didn't become breakfast.

"Hmm... Run and hide all you like." She murmured to the soft fluttering of wings that heralded a bird's retreat. Silver eyes narrowed, the glow somewhat obscured as she watched the leaves ruffle with the movement. "It isn't you I'm looking for anyway."

The DarkFayth mare had quarry much larger in mind than a simple rabbit, squirrel or dove. Though she occasionally amused herself with small game, she hadn't had to hunt them since she was a filly. Now she could take down a deer on her own, and eat most of it too. But what she was searching for was bigger than any doe or buck.

Well, Avant had always looked most like their Papa anyway... Flicking her spaded tail, the mare shrugged to herself, smiling. "Oh Brother... Where art thou?"

Avant had heard her coming, the break of the wind against her wings. He'd been in the forest, stalking small prey. He did so enjoy watching the little things jump out of their skins at the sight of a predator they hadn't heard coming. It was like the games that he used to play with Keshani. He'd taught himself how to be so quiet, even at his grand size, just so he could scare her.

He normally had an idea of when she would come to visit, though. It was strange for her to show up unannounced. Something was probably wrong. There was always something wrong. Avant grinned for a moment, wondering what would bring his big sister all the way out to see him. Pawing at the ground, he disturbed some of the birds, watching them flee as she spoke to them. So, she was looking for him.

His eyes glowed red for a second; markings following suit for just a brief moment. Unfolding his wings to rustle the underbrush a little, he stepped out from where he was hiding and nosed his sister's side. "Big sister, how unexpected."

And it really was unexpected. It had been a while since he'd seen any of his family, let alone his favorite among them. Avant wasn't really sure the why of this self-imposed distance, but it was there, and that was that. He hadn't seen his father in a coons age, and never seen his mother, but that was beside the point. He thought about his family, and looked at his sister.

"What brings you here, sister?" Avant Resari folded his wings back down. "Not that I mind, those who currently keep me company are... lacking in your intelligence and grace. I have missed you, big sister." He nuzzled her throat.

If Keshani had to guess, she would imagine Avant knew she had arrived the moment she spiraled out of the sky. Perhaps, if he was having an off day, it had taken him until she had landed... But she didn't expect him to ignore her presence for longer than the heartbeat it too for her to set hooves to earth and fold her wings from flight. She wasn't sure if it was a gift, inherited from somewhere back in the family, or if he was just perceptive.

Either way, he didn't miss much, her brother... But then again, when raised by a Kalona father and constantly avoiding a Skinwalker mother, one came to be light on one's feet and aware of one's surroundings. That was of course, if one wanted to survive foalhood with all of one's limbs intact. It was simply a matter of practicality, survival, and good common sense.

So it was of little to no surprise at all when he manifested out of the woods with scarcely a sound, and stepped right into view. After a lifetime of growing used to his tricks, she did not turn a feather, simply gave him an unimpressed look to hide her amusement. Considering how he towered over her by several hands, she couldn't help but tsk as she peered up at him. "Big sister, indeed."

'Older, most certainly... Though a Lady would not admit it.' She thought to herself, shaking her head and allowing a faint smile to cross her face. "Unexpected? I suppose."

She didn't care to think how long it had been since last she wandered, though it was certainly longer than reason would allow. Though they were not a close-knit family, she was fond of Avant... And considering the way their mother had stalked their steps and their sister had disappeared, she would do better to check in with him more regularly than she did.

After all, who knew if Kanti had managed to find Takhi? At least she and Avant could look out for each other.

"Nothing in particular." She admitted lightly. "I realized it had been too long since our last visit. I've not seen Takhi in several moons, my sport has grown quite tiresome, and I confess when I think of decent company you are the first one that comes to mind."

She grinned and nosed him in return, easily fitting herself under one of his large wings. "All in all, I would venture to say that I missed you, Little Brother. And as I wished to know how you had been doing, here I am."

Avant couldn't help the grin at the look his big sister gave him, trying to hide the fact she was amused by the game they always used to play. She wasn't trying very hard, obviously, but that was fine. He looked down at her, and laughed. "Older sister, then, if you'd prefer?"

He knew she was going to hit him sooner or later for that, but she couldn't help it.

"Rather unexpected, I'd say. It has been quite some time since you have come to see me. I was beginning to think you had forgotten where I dwell." He would comment about knowing where she spent her time, but the half-kalona never did stay in one place for very long. She liked to travel. Wander in search of whatever it was she was looking for.

Avant wondered, sometimes when his thoughts drifted to his family, if even she knew why she wandered the way she did. He wasn't even sure she had a place that she called home. She certainly hadn't shared the information if she did. Having someplace to call home did make it easier for their mother to find them, but... Avant thought it was worth the risk, now he was grown. Of course, there was there possibility of expanding the family. This was a place he could protect, high in the mountains, and his

"Nothing in particular... You normally don't do things for no reason in particular, sister mine." Avant tilted his head and considered her reasoning. "Do you think our mother has found our dear absent sister?" He didn't sound very concerned. Avant wasn't very close with Takhi.

"Well, it has indeed been too long since you've visited me, true." Avant hummed thoughtfully and draped one large wing over her, happy to see her no matter what her reason was. "I am glad I make the cut for your idea of decent company. I am fairly sure there are few on that list."

Laughing at the 'little brother' comment, he pushed her in the direction of of his cave. "Come inside, then, and tell me what you've been doing. I can say I have been fairly curious as to what you have been up too in your long trips away. And perhaps I will tell you of some of the events in mine life too."

Judging from the amusement practically rolling off of Avant in waves, he clearly understood the 'Oh Little Brother, I am Not Amused.' look on her face. His smile was unrestrained as he looked down on her, and like it or not she felt her own amusement rising. Huffing a soft laugh at him she shouldered him in mock annoyance, grumbling.

"Just because I am does not mean you should say such things, Baby Brother." She grumbled at him, swatting at him with her tail. "You are lucky you have outgrown me... Because if our positions were reversed..."

She'd certainly be able to bite his ears the way she was considering doing so, you could count on that. At his mention of the time that had passed between her visits, she stifled the urge to wince. It had been too long, and the truth was there was no excuse for it. She had not been enamored of a stallion or hidden away raising a family, terrorizing the natives, bullying some of those silly little Doves behind her father's back... She had been doing nothing of great interest or importance, and still had not made time to visit family. It was foolish and inexcusable, but Kalona weren't much for apologies.

"No, I had not forgotten." She shrugged slightly.

She had felt, restless as of late. Without decent prey or a game to truly intrigue her. The idea of Hawks flickered through her mind again, but she pushed it aside for the moment. After losing her adopted daughter, she wasn't really interested in building a nest only to have it empty. Maybe that was what had sent her hunting for her family again... To remind herself what it could be like to have someone who loved you, who knew you, waiting for you wherever you called 'home'.

"I suppose that is true enough." Keshani shrugged. "I enjoy having a purpose, true enough, though it seems to have failed me as of late."

The Kalona-Wind cross mare tilted her head, ears flicking. "I would not be surprised to hear of it, though word has not yet reached me. Then again, it has been some time since I have heard mother's foot-steps.. Perhaps she has grown tired of being thwarted and moved on to easier game? Though if she did fine Takhi, that would also explain why she has disappeared."

She let silence fall for a moment, considering the possibility their sister had fallen to their mother's madness. They had not seen Takhi since she was a filly, and time seemed to stretch infinite between then and now. She was almost a stranger, and Keshani's heart could not sorrow for her the way it did for Avia... Not when Takhi may simply have wandered, and Avia was surely dead.

Keshani shook it off for now, pulling her mind back to the present as she settled under his wing with a sigh. This was as close to 'family' as she had felt in far too long. "You are practically the beginning and end of the list, unless I count Papa."

She shouldered him back, laughing softly, and nodded as she stepped toward the cave. "I would like that, though I am afraid my stories are not as grand as they could be. Still, if you swear to trade tale for tale, I will accommodate you."

Avant laughed, openly amused, which was rare enough theses days. At least, true amusement was far from him. False humor was much more likely than any true. Of course, there was the amusement with Masque, but that was something to discuss when Keshani didn't look like she was going to be entertained with the little game that Avant was playing on the masked mare. Or with. Whatever. It was only semantics, after all.

"Luck had nothing to do with it, sister mine." He nuzzled her cheek, not missing the way she seemed so sad. "I simply was bred better." It was a joke, though she wasn't sure if she would take it that way. She knew that he had no pride for his Kalona half. It was merely a source of amusement that he looked so much like them.

"I'm glad that you have not forgotten. I would hate to have to hunt you down and remind you." Avant tilted his head in thought. "Well, I actually might have enjoyed that."

He eyed her, leading the way forward with a flick of his tail. "It has been a long time since I've heard of her either, her or our darling sister. Perhaps you are right, and she has left us for easier sport. Or Takhi." Avant didn't really care either way, so long as he was not being stalked by their crazy mother. With his idea for foals soon coming, the lack of mother dearest would be the best.

Avant didn't miss the look she had, the moment for their sister which... might be meant for someone else. He adjusted, letting her settle against him. "Well, so long as you missed me, I suppose I can forgive you your absence."

Entering the gave, he laughed. "I will trade, tale for tale, like we are children, yes. You go first, however, in the tale of tales, because I think you have something that is weighing your wings down, big sister."

Keshani smiled faintly, eyes flickering in amusement as she listened to her brother's laughter. The sound was honest, which was somewhat surprising as little entertained him. In that they were quite similar, a legacy of their father she expected. She shook her head, tsking softly at him.

"Didn't it?" She wondered, snapping her teeth carelessly at him as he nosed her cheek. "Better? Somehow I doubt that, there are times your manners are clearly lacking... And days I am sure my intelligence and machinations oustrip your own."

She gave him a sly look and fluffed her wings, snapping her tail in lazy arcs as she paced after him. Amusement colored her words, but not bright enough to blossom into laughter. To an extent she still mourned the loss of her adopted daughter, and without a distraction she was unlikely to shake off the gloom of that loss anytime soon.

"Takhi might be better sport, she is at least tied to the ground. You and I are far too difficult to catch, since we can take wing and go where she cannot follow." The wind-winged mare shrugged as she followed his lead, leaning in now and again to brush against his shoulder. It was comforting, to be so close to him again.

"I have, perhaps against my better judgement." She nipped at the high arch of his neck in mock rebuke, a faint smile touching her eyes for a moment. "I am sure the feeling shall pass shortly, do not hold it against me."

She followed him into the shadow of the cave, sighing as the cool dark stretched around them. With the sun at their backs there was more than enough light, even discounting their glowing markings. Still, the damp dark of the rocky throat meant that the heat of day was no longer oppressive. "That is quite fair-minded of you, I find myself wondering if there is an unseen catch."

She paused to dip her muzzle in a convenient pool in the rock, which caught the natural water and offered refreshment sweetened by the stone. His caveat made her sigh, grumbling under her breath. "Aha, and there it is. How did I know?"

Avant laughed again, finding his sister a delight today for an unknown reason. Perhaps it was just because he had not seen her for so long. It was an interesting theory. What was it that others said... absence made the heart grow fonder? If that was the case, then perhaps Keshani should stay away more often, if it would make him feel closer to his sister in this way.

He chuckled when she snapped her teeth at her, making sure to be out of the way, of course. "We shall have to sit down and match our intelligence and our machinations, if you think there is any fault in mine, sister. I think you will find us evenly matched."

Avant considered her and the gloom she seemed to carry with her, wondering what had gotten under her skin that would make carry such sadness with her. He couldn't outright ask her, because that probably wouldn't get him any answer. He had to think of a way to get her to want to tell instead.

"That's very true." He considered the notion. "I don't think she ever had a chance of catching us." Avant flexed his wings once, and settled one over Kesha's back.

Laughing softly at the n**, he was pleased to see some sort of joy return to her. "Never, sister mine, never."

He laughed again, stepping further into his den and finding a soft place to settle, his actions inviting her to do the same. "Because you know me so well, big sister. Now, if you wish to begin..."

Even Keshani had to admit the day had already taken a surprising turn. It was quite a turn to hear her brother laugh so freely. At the sound of his rumbling amusement Keshani tilted her head, ears pitched forward. He made her smile faintly in return, her eyes glittering as she watched him. At the moment she couldn't tell if he was amused because he had missed her, or if he was simply trying to soften her up.

With the family dynamic being what it was, either option was a possibility. At his invitation to match wits and schemes she grinned for a moment, a burst of amusement that she tucked away again behind a more suitable expression. This was why she had sought Avant out, to lighten her heart. Such a peculiar task to be found in so dark a soul, but needs must.

"Any time you are in the mood for losing, dearest brother." She returned sweetly. "You may name the day. I will even give you time to get your affairs in order."

"When we were young, perhaps, but not now... Now we know better."

She fluffed her wings and trailed along beside him in silence. The soft presence of one wing over her own made her glance up at him, affection alive in her heart in the way it bloomed for very few souls. There were no words needed for this, so she gave none.

"Never is a long time, Avant... I shall hold you to that." She murmured, drinking again before she followed his example. Silently she folded her legs underself when she found a corner of rock she favored, curling her tail around to her chest and settling directly across from him.

"Indeed, I know you well. And I am not at all surprised that there is a catch with you. Begin?" She gave him a coy look. "Begin with what, brother dearest?"

Avant was amused by her reaction to his laughter. He had found it useful to laugh more freely, and for less reason, when he was among others. It seemed to either put them at ease or heighten their fear. Either way, it worked for him. And Keshani seemed to at least enjoy the sound of his laughter. It got a smile out of her, at the very least. Maybe even lightened her mood some. She seemed to need it.

And she was his sister, the very least he could do was laugh for her.

He laughed again, a darker sound than before. "You know I would love to match out wits now, big sister. Let us see what you have been up to, compared to what I have been up to. Then we can determine who wins, and who loses."

There was a small comfort in having his sister close, knowing that she was safe. He couldn't put words to it, or to why, so he didn't. And they walked in a comfortable silence, side by side.

"Never is indeed a long time." He chuckled. "I will make sure that all my catches are seen by you before you agree, better?"

Avant folded his wings tightly to his back and frowned at her. "You know what I mean, sister." He shifted a moment. "If I have to prompt you, then what brings you to me in such a state? We could either compare notes on our latest exploits and dance around the matter, or you could start with that, then we can move on to more enjoyable tales."
PostPosted: Fri Oct 03, 2014 4:38 pm

Keshani didn't think it was unwise to make note of her brother's amusement, when it was such a rare thing. Like her, Avant was much more likely to 'make his own fun' than to find humor in a situation at hand. At best, he could be counted on to contribute to an issue and further exacerbate it. If Avant was amused, it was important to note that it was not at her expense. As there was no other soul here to suffer Avant's amusement or rath, she felt relaxed enough to nose him again in an echo of affection. The sound lifted her heart, whether he intended it or not.

'Why should this loss hit you so hard?' A soft voice wondered, and Keshani fought the urge to trample it and her emotions. Avant was a welcome distraction, if only she could allow herself to be distracted.

'Enough moping, figure out why he is so amused instead.'

She was fairly sure his new-found humor was not something she could take credit for. Likely, he had found such changes could be made to his own advantage, and so he had made them. And now that she had noticed, she could make an effort to coax the story out of him. Thought if it suited his humors and the game to keep his secret, she would be disappointed. Avant certainly wouldn't break his silence on that score.

'Surely others relationships are not so complex as ours..' She mused with a soft laugh and a rueful shake of her head. Well, she would not trade her brother for anything, regardless.

"Yes, I know you well enough to guess that." Keshani agreed with a soft incline of her head and a muffled sound of amusement. "Well enough, though in some instances I think we shall find we are quite evenly matched. Father would be so proud, were he here."

A faint kick of pain in her ribs, and she ignored it as she resettled into a more comfortable pose. She was safe here, deep in her brother's territory and within his very dwelling itself. There would be no catches here, of that much she was sure. "That is more than satisfactory, I agree."

She sighed as he chided her, dropping her eyes. It was, cowardly of her to skirt the issue after he had given his word to share all 'catches' up front. With a mutter she shifted again and flicked her tail with a petulant little smack. "Forgive me, Avant. That remark was unworthy of us both, I apologize."

She drew a deep breath and sighed. "I adopted a lost filly, mixed blood and partially wind... She had a horn, something akin to a unicorn or a kirin... Whatever she was born, her nature was not so soft as that."

The kalona-wind mare took a moment to smile, softly fond at the memory. "I raised her and taught her to hunt.. She was a joy to me I did not expect, a child that was mine though not born to me."

She stopped, words unexpectedly caught in her throat. 'Avia... I miss you, my sweet ghost-child.'

Avant smirked, amusement curling around in his head with a purr. It wasn't often that he felt so amused at things, not without more reason that just his sisters company. The little sparrow was getting under his skin more than he thought. And the charming singer was an amusement all on her own. He thought that his sister would approve of them both, actually, his little plots to sire a line and blend it together with the young sparrow. He didn't think that Masque would mind too much when he decided to take was was his.

But he hadn't thought he would be telling her so soon, though. He was still undecided as to whether he would or not, but if that's what it took to get her to come out with whatever had her so sad, he would happily divulged his secrets for hers.

"In some instances, perhaps." Avant laughed softly, flexing his wings idly and trying to figure her out before she said anything. He never did like being surprised. And he did so love figuring things out before the others had a chance to tell him about it. "And yes, I think he would be proud. However, as he is not here, he will not be proud." He continued with a dramatic sigh. "He never is around when it would be prudent. Alas, we shall just have to assume he would be proud of us." He smirked, thinking that they would never know if Aveshar would be proud of them. Their father wasn't the type to express that sort of emotion. Of course, they weren't the type to need that sort of emotion, so it all worked out.

Avant nuzzled at her, amused. "It's fine, I know you know how I am with my games. As are you, as is our father. It is understandable to not want any catches. And also a rare offer." He tossed his head, braids bouncing against his neck.

This... was not something he'd expected. Talk about a surprise. He was stunned speechless, probably the first time in his life.

"Sister..." He still didn't know what to say. He draped a wing over her and pressed close, unsure but in mourning with her anyway. "Who do we need to kill? Who has harmed one of our family?"
PostPosted: Thu Mar 26, 2015 8:24 pm

Keshani eyed her brother in amusement, wordlessly noting that he was fast approaching 'smug' in his general demeanor. Still, she couldn't quite bring herself to steal that amusement away. And the moment she asked -or demanded- that he explain himself.. Well that was the moment he won. And became exponentially worse. And she couldn't quite bring herself to give him the satisfaction, so she let him preen silently instead.

Maybe it would all become too much and he'd just spit it out, without her having to ask. Such a thing had not happened in a long time -for Avant was a patient hunter- but she could hope.

"True enough, neither of us are likely to run and gossip to him... I am sure us telling him he should be proud would be of no use, in the long run. And I am certain your territory is far too well defended to have to deal with a pesky little eavesdropper.. And even if such a thing existed, I am sure it would be eaten by father for daring approach him long before it could share anything of interest." She entertained the thought for a moment, and then brushed it away with a soft snort and a shake of her head.

Such things were a distraction at best. There was no point in distractions. Perhaps if she shared this grief with Avant it would lessen, and she could overcome it.

Keshani leaned into the wing, accepting the rare offer of comfort with an equally rare need for it. She ground her teeth together, and then shook her head. "An accident.. A stupid, foolish little accident. She went after a buck too soon, and.."

She trailed off, her tone harsh when she could make herself summon the words. "It got the better of her, in the end. And she is gone now."

Keshani hated that, hated that the words were true. She wanted someone to blame, someone she could rend limb from limb for stealing the daughter she had found. But there was nothing to be done, and that made her angrier still. "I find myself alone, I have no taste for my previous entertainments... It is, a comfort to be able to explain to you."

Avant smirked at the silent not-questions that she was asking. Of course, he could always brag about his plans for the little sparrow and the phantom's daughter. But then, she would have a reason to be smug, and he couldn't have that. It was something that he could avoid talking about for now, since the evidence of his plans would be apparent soon enough. Something things were rather hard to miss, even if he did not see his sister for some time. She would know when it happened. It was a family affair after all.

A low rustling outside of his den made him pause, turning slightly to see his familiar make a slow entrance, slinking in with a wicked smirk. It must mean that his task was done and that the ferret had done it well. "Raveri?"

Ducking his head in a little bow, the white and red ferret smiled slowl. "It is done. I'm not sure if the singer is going to apprecate the gesture, given her nature, but it is done nonetheless" He hopped up on one of the rocks nearby and regarded the mare with another smirk. "I don't believe we've meet, sister of Avant and daughter of Aveshar." He didn't name her for a reason, though he knew her name. She was someone that he couldn't help but recognize.

Avant smiled. The gift he'd decided to send was strange, but meaningful. It had been a fun thing to do, actually, something he thought he would teach his children if they had wings. Probably even if they didn't. Catching and killing songbirds of all different colors to turn into jewelry for the lady was a lot more entertaining than he'd thought it would be. Of course, the fact that he'd killed each of the birds to take a single feather was not something he wanted shared with Masque. It just wouldn't do. Let her think the differently colored feathers were all 'donted' or simply taken.

He didn't think she'd be glad of him killing such innocent things for such a shallow reason.

Smirking at Keshani, daring her to ask about what that was all about, not sure if he would tell her even if she demanded it of him. It was just too amusing.

Avant laughed outloud at the idea of something other than Raveri lingering around eavesdropping on him. Nothing moved in his terratory for fear of attracting his attention. If something dared, he would eat it before it got far. And if the thing managed to excape him with something interesting to tell, he imagined it would not be in one piece. And if it went to his father.... Avant laughed hard enough that he nearly fell over. The idea was just hysterical.

Surprised that Kesha was actualy accepting his comfort, but not showing it, he dropped his head to nuzzle at her neck, trying to make her feel better, if it would. Avant wasn't too sure how to comfort her. It was not something he'd ever entertained doing.

"I am sorry for the loss of someone who meant something too you, sorry I had not the chance to meet her adn share her stories with you, as a way for her to live. Sorrier still that we can not make anyone pay for the pain that they have caused you." He meant every word he said. A loss like that could not be something easy to bare. If he had found someone that he considered a son, that meant as much to him, he would tear the world down in his rage.

"I am glad you can confide in me, sister mine." Avant lingered for a moment then stood. "Come on, now you know what we must do. There are things that need dying, and to die bloody. It may not be the thing that killed your daughter, but it always could be." He motioned for his familiar to stay here. "Come, there is a herd of grounds not too far. I think they might be a bit of sport."
