Roland was standing at the portal to the Life training room, it was time to do the Jenga course. It was far from dangerous and it was going to be more 'relaxing' then the last course he did with Shu.
It would also result in drunken dart stuns and doodling on faces with Sharpies.
Shu had been invited and he was simply hanging around looking like a slightly shady character who made eye contact with everyone who walked by as if inviting them to talk to him.
Jenga was more fun with friends.
WE ARE HALLOWEEN
Life Hunter BATTLE ARENA
General Information The portal opens up into an observation room, and down the stairs, an odd chamber for something like hunter training. At the center of a piranha-filled pool stands a solid stone table and several chairs. The Life Arena was built underneath the demolitions and ballistics testing areas, and the chamber rumbles with the occasional explosions above. Pinpoint red lasers sweep across the room regularly, as if hidden snipers are searching for a nice target. In the center of the table sits a wooden tower, made up of smaller wooden blocks. Yes. That's right. The Life Hunters prefer to train via Jenga.
Note: Distraction techniques and Yo Momma jokes are considered viable weapons when playing competitively.
If you fail: you have knocked down the tower! A small dart hits the back of your neck. You come to several hours later, and hope Dr. H didn't do anything to your body while you were unconscious. When you look into the mirror...
If you win: you have reached 50 points! You get a sharpie marker to do with as you please. peen points go to those with the highest scores.
Group Play Playing in a group on any course means certain things can be shifted to make it a better experience for multiple people without holding anyone back. An approved group play alteration for the life arena goes as follows: When someone knocks the tower down, they are shot with a weaker dart. They will wake up 5 minutes later, the game can be reset back to the point before it fell by placing their hands on the table and saying the word, constructum. This allows them to start again where they left off instead of the beginning. They can take up to three of these darts before passing out for an hour, the game will not reset for them and they will need to try again from the beginning.
Mechanics - by carefully removing pieces of the tower, you earn points and advance to the next round. As the rounds continue, the odds grow steadily against you. Rolling a 1 at any point means you have knocked down the tower. Please do enjoy your mystery dart. Anything after reaching 50 points is purely for peen.
- you may roll pieces individually (suggested for group play) or in batches of 5 (basically, a full round.)
Round 1
Pieces: 5 Points per piece: 1 Trainee Roll: 1d10 Life Trainee Roll: 1d12 Hunter Roll: 1d12 Life Hunter Roll: 1d20
Round 2
Pieces: 5 Points per piece: 3 Trainee Roll: 1d8 Life Trainee Roll: 1d10 Hunter Roll: 1d10 Life Hunter Roll: 1d12
Round 3
Pieces: 5 Points per piece: 4 Trainee Roll: 1d6 Life Trainee Roll: 1d8 Hunter Roll: 1d8 Life Hunter Roll: 1d10
Round 4
Pieces: 5 Points per piece: 10 Trainee Roll: 1d4 Life Trainee Roll: 1d6 Hunter Roll: 1d6 Life Hunter Roll: 1d8
Bonus Mechanics Life Hunters train for precise hand eye coordination and exceptional judgement, thus they have a slightly lower chance of knocking down the tower.
Hanna was passing by the Life training center after going for a run. Sweat beaded on the fine red hairs at the nape of her neck, and her skin was coated in a fine sheen. Since waking back up from the pods, Hanna had made conditioning a huge part of her daily schedule, and it was finally starting to pay off. Shades of definition were visible in her legs, at least. That was a Big Deal.
A quasi-familiar face stood near the portal, eyeballing every single person in the vicinity. Which, for now, was Hanna. She gave him a dead-eyed stare and then glanced over her shoulder to check if anyone else was behind her.
He promised they would do another course, so she came. Similar to last time, she tied up her hair neat and in some casual wear that won't hinder her movement. She wasn't sure if the jenga the Mist hunter mentioned was like her toy for killing time, she didn't care if they fall, but when they did, she felt a little bit guilty. When she arrived, Roland was already waiting, so she waved to him and ran towards the hunter.
"Hello, what's the Jenga you mentioned in your text message? Is that like the wooden toy? Are we going to train our concentration and - and staying calm in event?" Like always, she had a lot of questions to ask. Shortly, she noticed there was someone else. "Oh! Oh! I am sorry! I didn't see you earlier......Er -Nice to meet you! Are you gonna train with us today?" The petite Asian girl smiled as a greeting and then turned back to Roland for a confirmation.

Roland locked eyes with Hanna, staring quietly for a moment before slowing raising a finger to point at her. "You. You're kinda new right?" He wiggled a finger for her to come closer, suddenly Shu arrived bouncing along like the bubbly little ball of happy she always seemed to be.
"Yes we'll be running Jenga today, the wooden blocks but its ummm rather different then normal Jenga?" He nodded to Hanna again, "It's better with more people so... if you want access to more runic weapons its worth joining in."

The boy was... pointing at her? She raised an eyebrow, but the moment was broken as a familiar fellow Death Hunter sprang into action. Hanna stepped to the side to allow Shu's hug to continue unimpeded. The girl felt like something straight out of a manga, which had the potential to annoy a skeptic like Hanna, but Shu was sweet and amusing. Somehow, she didn't rankle her. (Not to mention the sweets helped.)
"Kind of new," Hanna said, shrugging as she walked closer to the pair. Golden eyes moved to Shu. "We've sort of met before -- Twitter, missions." She pointed to herself and and added, "Hanna." By way of introduction. It singed her ego a bit that Shu didn't remember her, but she moved by it quickly.
Plus, this guy was talking about learning more, Jenga, and access to runic weapons? "Sign me up," she said, tugging at her tank top. "I've never done this course, I'm game." Anticipation began to bubble in her stomach. The Death Hunter did love a challenge.

"Different? Less boring than playing alone, you say?" She giggled and imagined there would be like another dungeon, oh she was so excited. "Runic weapon! I want to get maybe dagger or bandages, I plan to at least." She grinned at Roland.
Hanna's answer somehow made Shu guilty. "Oh my! Sorry - I mean I do recognize you - you are friend of Cami. Yes, I saw you on twitter and the sahara mission....but we haven't talk face-to-face before - so - yup nice to meet you face-to-face, you can call me Shu like the others did, I can just call you Hanna will do?" As a girl grew up in a tradition chinese family, saluation is very important, that was why she had been called people Miss or Mr. "I hope we will have chance to do duties together later, Death division pride!" The girl wanted to make it up by taking the girl's hands sincerely, she was observant enough to sense the unhappiness just like when Kostya didn't remember her at all. "A candy for a new friend, as sweet as you do I am sure~" She shoved a peach gummy in Hanna's hand, it might tell them why they could sniff a weak peach scent around her.
"Do you want one as well?" She asked Roland with a cheerful smile. "I am sure this will be fun and meaning!" She announced happily, getting into the space between the two hunters easily, merit of a shortie, don't jealous.
Roland made no attempt to avoid the hug, Shu was able to hop right in as Hanna moved aside. It was kind of just accepted with Shu. Roland was also far less strict then Hanna so Shu got away with her antics right off the bat, if anything it made him worry for her so much more.
"Kinda new is better then fresh out the pod new. So you're welcome to join." Wiggling away from Shu he offered Hanna a hand, "My name's Roland by the way. I think I've seen you post a few times but I tend to be more quiet on twitter. Too much drama."
Turning back to Shu he nodded, "Way less boring then playing alone, playing alone actually ends up being way more dull and kind of crummy if you don't play with people you know and trust." He looked at Hanna, "Consider it part of a test in trust for you then? I won't be too mean, promise."
He left it up in the air what that meant.
Finally he turned to enter the portal, on the other side stepping into the jenga room, tiny laser lines swiveling about as the system set up to take pot shots with sleep darts.
"Welcome to Life Jenga."

Shu was a fountain of words, and before long, she was shoving a peach gummy into Hanna's hand. The girl looked down at it, raised an eyebrow, but decided to swallow it down. Why not? "Thanks," she said, offering a smile to the girl. "Though "death pride" will always sound a bit off to me." It didn't mean she didn't love her division.
Shifting her weight, Hanna nodded in Roland direction. "Yeah, Twitter can be overwhelming. I do a lot of spectating, less narrating." Then he said something about trust, which led Hanna to shrug because shrug trust wasn't her strong suit. It was much easier to just follow Roland's lead and jump through the portal, eyes falling on the course.
"Well, this is different," Hanna said. "Where do we start?"
"A bit off?" Shu was not smart enough to understand what Hanna meant, for the petite girl, it was just like the sense of belonging she had in secondary school, which they were divided into four houses in swimming gala and sports day. She loved her division, they have the coolest lead and comrades.
She lowered her head a bit, "But I didn't have anyone to play with me....But I got you two now!" The girl beamed with a bright smile. "A test of trust? Sounds interesting! Let's go shall we?" She did like to be the first one to dash in but she knew nothing about it, so she followed like a little tail, excited and hopping like a little bird at behind.
Out the portal, her eyes widened with shock. "Oh my.....are we in the movie?" She winced as the laser swept over her body, and maybe jumping over another beam until she saw the table with a tower of jenga set up already. "Oh are those killer fishes?!" Her mouth made a medium "O" as she saw the fishes jumping out and open-close their sharp teeth. "T-They look hungry.....have you fed them?" She raised a worried eyebrow while asking Roland, Shu could imagine how much pain if a part of flesh was torn by those teeth.
Nope.
The petite girl grabbed onto Roland's clothes due to the sudden dizziness. Shu shook her head, refused to let go, she needed something to rely on to calm herself.

"Spectating is indeed the best way to handle twitter, unless you have very thick skin or high hopes for people." He lacked this on two fronts sometimes, but that was personal issues.
Of course Shu was ever excited to get started, if only she knew just how miserable Jenga ended up being most of the time. Heaven forbid you did it alone, you'd end up in far worse situations then what most people did to each other before giving up and leaving as a group.
"Only for Hannah, we've never met so we have no reason to entirely trust each other not to be mean when it comes to the other half of this game." Suddenly Shu was clinging to him, inquring about the fish below. This was not entirely unexpected, but the shaking of the small girl confirmed this would likely be a bad day for Jenga.
"The fish are... not fed as far as I know. And those lasers are snipers." He moved closer to the table, practically tugging Shu along. "It's a series of Life agents with tranquil darts. If the pressure of jenga causes you to make a mistake and knock over the tower, one of the snipers will knock you out as punishment. Trust is the part where you really hope the people you came in here with don't mess with you." Hence the multi colored sharpies tucked in his jacket.
"I'll let you two go first since it's your first time. Shouldn't be to hard to start right? And the tower has a nifty mechanic where you just need to say the catchphrase to rebuild the tower if you knock it down."

There was no time to explain the idiom to Shu as they whisked into the arena, ready to play what appeared to be very, very intense Jenga. Her reaction was different than Shu's, but the sentiment was fairly similar: "Ah.... ********." Hanna eyed the snappy mouths of the fish, the swing of the lasers. "I am starting to wish I played more Jenga as a child." She mulled over Roland's words -- not to be mean when it comes to the other half of this game. What did that mean?
Roland mentioned a few other aspects of the game, and Hanna immediately regretted her decision. Trust was probably what she was worst at in general. She started to turn to the door, but it was sealed since the course was in progress. ******** great. When the unfamiliar boy said she and Shu should go first, Hanna shot him a glare. "Is this some sort of trick -- lambs to the slaughter?"
She made no move toward the platform.

Shu might know the playful side of Roland, but definitely not about the markers. Thus when she heard that the fishes were not fed, she gave Roland a "The Scream" face, only less terrible than the painting and clutch-release her necklace once, thinking whether she can swing them off if they really jumped up. The petite girl gazed at the water, or the swimming piranha like a cat, minus the butt wiggle.
The two sat down, Shu's knees were touching each other while her feet slid out, shaking. She nervously looked around but found Hanna was standing at the sealed door. "H-Hanna? Are you o-okay? If you want, I-I can start first?" Her words stumbled at weird timing. Then, the girl mustered up with a deep breathe, minimized her shake when she reached out to pull a block from the tower.
She didn't breathe out so her face was a bit red when she was done. "See....It-It is not so difficult. C-Come, Hanna, I-I will guard your body if you black out, and please do the same for me?" Shu attempted a warm smile while she offered the girl far away a hand. "Roland will guard ours if we both black out, no worries." She quickly glanced at the Life hunter before returning her attention to Hanna.

She doesn't know about sharpies.....thus her trust.
"They shouldn't be able to jump up here, I haven't seen one do it, it's mostly just to mess with your head." Waving a hand he shook his head, "No, hellno, I mean...." he sighed, "I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't hurt Shu or another trainee I'm just meeting."
Turning back to Shu he frowned, "Seriously, you won't get hurt, it's just a really annoying game of Jenga to get a pair of Runic bandages when you're done." To prove his point he casually moved to the tower tugging a piece out before taking the risky move of tapping out a 2nd piece using the first like a small hammer.
At the door, Hanna had her arms crossed, contemplating if there was a punishment for not participating once the game began. Knowing Deus, there probably was. Shu had already made her move, Roland too, leaving Hanna at the door. With a sigh, the Death Hunter stalked over to the table, gingerly taking a seat. "All right," she muttered, but shot Shu a slight smile. "It's a deal, body protection guaranteed." Or was Shu part of it? Was she just playing the roll of lovable anime girl? It made Hanna's head hurt to think about it.
Instead, she would just have to play some Jenga and stop being so paranoid.
Carefully, Hanna selected a piece and pulled it free, feeling immediately better when the was no explosion or alarm or anything else that might signal something bad ahead. Golden eyes strayed to Roland. "Just being cautious, you never know," she said, the closest she would likely get to apologizing. "So... this is it? Play Jenga until the tower falls? Then we get darted as punishment. That's it, really?" It seemed like there had to be more to it than that.
Roland must be an expert of this game, that's not fair! When the trainee saw how he got his second piece, her cheeks puffed up a little naturally. "Ok, that's only a GREAT distraction, got it! However we can't exclude the possibility of accident anyway~" Her eyes looking at the fishes like a cat might somehow imply her desire to test her hammer with them, hitting them to fly like a golf ball.
When Hanna came to them, Roland was ignored. "Deal~" Shu winked with a thumb up, and clapped for Hanna's success as she finished the great first step. "Hmm, I think so? If the fishes are not part of it, then everything should be fine~!" The girl smiled brightly with ease and leaned forward to poke on the lower part of the tower until she found a loose one.
"Roland, your turn~" The legs under the table swung idly.
