"I'm flattered!" said Biroki. It was rare that he went near the Tale, but getting a letter from Uquin had been about as unexpected. "I really am. I'm just surprised that you wanted to train with me..." Being asked to train someone made Biroki feel like a real sage, with responsibility and, most of all, ability.

He had a student, and it was now his job to make sure that said student did really well. His pride needed the boost, with Zuri still not back from Zena.

But he wasn't thinking about that! He was thinking about how manly and awesome he was to be requested, personally, to train this bright young man. Thinking about how far he'd come from the limp, whimpering, stammering boy was far preferable to thinking about the mistakes he'd made as a man.

"All right. You go first." he said. He wanted to see what the boy... young healer... could do first.

Uquin was making great strides in his craft as a healer, but as a fighter he was still sorely lacking. With a family on the way it just... didn't make sense for him to not try and brush up on his battle skill. That being said, he didn't simply need some person willing to spar with him, no what he needed was a fellow magic user. And there was only one sage that he could think of to even consider asking. It truly was asking a lot, to request Biroki's assistance, but the man had come (much to Uquin's surprise), and here he was - staff in hand, ready and eager to let the young healer make a fool of himself.

Pressing his lips into a thin line, Uquin pressed his fingers along the beads he used as his channeling weapon, letting out a pent up breath of air. He didn't want to admit to Biroki that he was simply the only mage he knew - but even then Biroki would no doubt be his choice. Maybe it was a sentimental thing, but Biroki had helped Uquin through that battle in one piece, and without his guiding hand Uquin was sure he would've truly seen some horrors while tending to the wounded. He owed it to the man, even more so now that the older magic user was willing to train him at all.

"That's...generous, but I doubt my lead will impress you much." Or make any difference, in the long run. He simply didn't have the skill, or ability, to make much of a dent - and if he did he'd be very surprised. Nonetheless, he focused his abilities into his beads - his magic filling the refined medium, filling them with a buzzing sort of power under his fingertips. He then gestured to the ground - and from it a rock almost the size of his head lifted from the tremulous earth of the Tale forest, flinging it with all the force he could muster at his opponent. If it hit, it would be a sizeable blow - yet he had yet to see if it had actually managed to hit the mage.

Biroki uses Delayed Elemental Burst: Resolves in 3/3 turns

Biroki's eye widened at the size of the boulder coming at him. He ducked, letting it sail over his head and land with a sizable, painful-sounding thud against one of the Tale trees. He watched it settle, then turned back to Uquin.

"W-well. That was impressive... I guess I don't have to teach you the, uh... basics of harmful magic." That had been a very big boulder... "Not sure if you need to work on aiming, either." If he hadn't ducked when he had... Biroki didn't want to think too hard about it.

"So, what I'm doing is called a 'delayed elemental burst.'" he opened his hand and flexed it, "I'm charging the leylines of magic - the magic that makes up the world we live in - with energy." he let Uquin see the charged shimmer of the air around him before letting it fade away to build naturally.
"It doesn't do anything now, but in a little bit..." Biroki made a gesture with his hands.
"Anyway..." he took up a readied stance, "Thats's more of a, uh, mage thing, but leylines are a pretty basic function of magic, so if you know how to use them, I bet they will improve your other magic too..."

Break: 15. No break.

Uquin held his breath, his body shifted into an at-wait, slightly hunkered position. The boulder was perhaps the largest he'd every dragged from the earth, and his own green eyes widened at the sight of it, feeling briefly concerned for the sage's well being. Would the man cast a wall, shattering the boulder? Would he strike it from the sky? Would he -- duck his head simply, letting it sail over his head like a thrown nut, crashing into a nearby tree with a horrible crash. Uquin flinched his eyes at the noise, but felt both relieved and childishly disappointed at how simply it had been evaded, not realizing Biroki's impressed reaction for what it was.

Uquin found he didn't quite like that he didn't know something - or that he wasn't above-average at it. He was used to being good at what he did, so having it fail made him feel frustrated, even if his impassive face didn't reveal it. Instead he nodded at Biroki, ignoring a bead of sweat that gathered at his temple at the mention of an impending attack.

Should he be able to sense this magic? He had seen the brief shimmering of the air infront of Biroki's fingers, but after it dispersed - nothing. It felt normal again. Was a mage supposed to feel these leylines, buzzing around them? Uquin had never been as in tune with magic as other healers or mages - and he was beginning to suspect his grip on the earth, before, had been more out of an emotional desire to do well than actual skill.

"Leylines? ..I'll try again." He asked, his brows furrowing slightly, before he nodded and settled into an attacking pose again. He tried, he really did, to focus on ... something. Whatever it was that Biroki was speaking about. But while he could feel whatever element he called for reacting to his wishes, he didn't understand just why they did, yet. After a long moment of attempting to focus, the leaf earthling took a deep breath then raised his hands infront of him, his breath hitching in surprise as small sparks of electricity shot between his fingertips. The magic wasn't aimed at him, but the small tendrils zapped at him regardless, and it stole enough of his focus that as he flung his hands at his teacher, the bolt that resulted was small, and less than impressive all things considered, especially compared to the boulder from before.

It had taken Biroki a while to feel the leylines instead of just accidentally triggering them with his mind. His uncle hadn't gone easy on him when training him to the leylines. What did that mean? Should he be hard on Uquin? Or easy? Biroki favored easy - he wasn't mean enough to be hard on anybody.

Plus, he didn't think Uquin was setting random accidental inintentional fires with his mind. Meaning that Biroki's case had been a bit more urgent...

He watched Uqun concentrate, finding it interesting to watch from the outside. Could he, Biroki wondered, feel the charged leylines around him as they gained power?

Biroki jerked back in surprise as, unexpectedly, lightning shot from the boy's hands. "Oh!" he said, surprised, as the lightning struck him sending a searing, familiar pain through him. He couldn't have dodged it - The lightning had had a mind of its own, and had sought the lightning inside him.

"Good!" he called, moving back a few steps and letting the residual lightning charge the leylines around him. "What did you feel?" he asked, taking a few deep breaths to put his lungs back in order, "Did you summon that from within your body or from the leylines outside of you?" if it was from outside, then that meant that Uquin was tapping into the power Biroki had suffused the air with - which was actually kind of neat and not something Biroki had thought of before.

To be honest, when the lightning hit Biroki, Uquin felt his own body seize up in apprehension. They had agreed to fight one another, yet at the same time Uquin had never truly been in a fight. He was cockily confident he could hold his own, with his magic, but at the same time he'd never truly had to watch the consequences of his magic hitting someone - at least not in a way that was meant to hurt. His eyes widened slightly, breath hitching in his throat, but after a long moment he let the breath out, especially at noticing that Biroki didn't seem horribly injured by it.

If anything, he seemed surprised, mildly pained, but more curious.

At the question Uquin blinked, then thought. He'd used each of his spells multiple times, in learning to cast them in the first place. Always he could feel the energy pulling from inside him - and it was the same, now. But at the same time he'd been surprised by the lightning - as if some quality in the air had made it spark more than usual. Perhaps the dryness of the air made the lightning react differently, compared to the humidity of Jauhar where he'd learned the spell?

"From inside - usually." He admittedly, his eyebrows furrowed in bemusement. After a long moment, feeling somewhat emotionally startled by landing a hit, Uquin decided he should take a shot himself - so he swallowed thickly, then swept his hands infront of himself, watching the air shimmer. It was a small defensive field, a wall per se - not strong by any means. "It hardly feels ... fair - to cast at you when you aren't defending yourself." He pointed out, nervously.

Delayed Elemental Burst (Lightning): Resolves Next Turn

Biroki casts Fire lvl 1!

Needs 13 or more!

16+14=30 = hit
17+14= 33/2= 16.5 damage incoming
20 = Uquin is Burned!

(An opponents burn will inflict -1HP per turn for 3 turns if spell hits (burn cannot be dodged when inflicted))

"Usually?" said Biroki, "Did this lightning come from somewhere different?" he looked at the faint sparks in the air around Uquin, slightly nervous, "... Like the air around you?" he licked his lips. Maybe he should have waited to charge the leylines... they would be going off soon.

At the same time, though, he had wanted to teach Uquin about leylines - what better way than to have them make themselves known?

Painfully.

Yeah, he felt terrible.

"Don't mind me." he said, his hand glowing as he summoned fire to it. He massaged it into an orb shape, watching the wall shimmer around Uquin. "Now, s-see, I can't make a wall like that myself, but I do know that you are using the energy in the air to hold it, otherwise it would go down the moment you brought your hands away." he explained, gently rolling the fireball in his hand. "You started it inside, and it was continued outside..." he held up the fireball so that Uquin could see, "I drew this out from inside." he continued, "It is a little different - I have to fuel it to keep it going. But as it does go, it heats the air and the magic in it, and that allows it to keep going, instead of being just a... heh... pretty lightshow." he slowly took a throwing stance. "And, uh, I am defending myself. For a sage, a good offense is the best defense. It is what we excel at..." he hesitated, "Be ready to dodge..." he said, almost apologetically, as he threw the fireball.

As Biroki threw the fireball, it did what he knew it would - it blossomed from the small orb into something far more dangerous as it flew through the air, taking energy from around it to feed it's fire. Which was the point - he had wanted to demonstrate that - but it was also very real and very, very hot. Biroki hoped the boy would dodge.

FULL DAMAGE!: -16.5

Uquin Counterattacks
11+7 = 18 --> HIT
10+7 = 17 --> 4.25 dmg to BIROKI using Earth lvl1.

Of course it had to be a fireball. Uquin groaned mentally, listening to his... what, mentor? Teacher? explain the light he formed in his hands. Be ready to dodge - right. The leaf earthling suddenly had little confidence that he'd be able to pull off such a thing - and sure enough, as the ball was cast at him, it flared to life, the size bedazzling to the eyes and throwing off his mental projections for where the ball would land.

At least he had cast a wall, right? But either because it had formed from the same energy, or the fire blast was simply too strong, as it passed through the wall it only diminished a very small amount. He only had enough time to raise his hands as the flames smashed into his flesh, searing hot. He knew it would definitely be painful, already a dangerous burn - but hopefully, afterwards, with thorough bandaging and healing he would recover.

Skin blazing, a hiss of pain passing from his throat, Uquin very much regretted coaxing the mage out here. Biroki was so out of his league, magic wise, that simply an attack had been more than enough to crumple Uquin's resistance. And that wasn't taking into account the next attack to come. He would lose, but he was learning quite a bit -including the fact that he was very much NOT a fighter, by any means. Nonetheless, he focused what meager energy and focus he still had, despite the burns on his arms, to cast another Earth spell at Biroki - but it was much smaller than the previous one, and even if it DID hit the damage would be negligible, and had nothing on the impact of Biroki's previous hit.

Uquin's legs already felt weak. Pathetic. "And then your delayed elemental burst, Master?" He called, tensing up in what minimal preperation he could pull up.

Biroki winced as he saw the damage that his fireball had done. He hadn't meant it to be so big, honestly... He was trying not to hurt the young man. He could only come to one conclusion from the burns on the young man's body:

He was a terrible teacher.

”Er...” Biroki watched as the air began to shimmer and crackle around Uquin, the leylines charged to bursting with energy. ”Yes...!” he managed not to yelp as the piece of magic-flung earth collided with his body. ”That was a...” He flinched back as the lightning arced around Uquin. ”Good shot... Sure enough, as the delayed energy hit him, Uquin knew he had lost, and badly. Two attacks had brought him to his knees, and he wasn't sure if it was a testament to Biroki's strength - or his own weakness. He fell to his knees, exhausted, but then looked up when the mage rushed to his side, hands aglow as he healed him. It was an appreciated gesture. Definitely not enough to heal him back to battle readiness, but the burns on his arms soothed and knit back together, and by the time Biroki finished he only had minor burns - ones that could be handled with soothing cream.

"Better you than any Oban." He responded, waving off the other man's guilt and instead moving so he could fall back onto his haunches, sighing and running his hand through his hair. "Thank you - I ... learned that I have a lot to work on, as far as much self defense goes."

”Ah... haha. Yes, well...” Biroki managed a laugh, relieved to see that his student was not horribly, terribly, irreparably injured. ”That's true.” He sat on the ground next to Uquin. ”You... had a lot of good, um... moments there. We can work on them, um...” he paused, ”That is, if you still want my help...” He frowned at Uquin's burns. ”Here.” he said, scrambling back upright, ”Let me at least help you to your home? Honestly, yes, a large bit of Uquin was ashamed at his weakness, and upset by the loss. The only thing that kept him from shrugging the offered help aside was that he was a man ruled by practicality, not by emotion - and so he accepted Biroki's help back to his feet. He wanted to feel resentful of the man for beating him, but he just couldn't - he was still in awe of this man, who had somehow agreed to teach him, and so frustration or not he was glad for his support.

So he nodded, casting the other man a look that he meant to be thankful, though his own features were often unreadable. "Thank you." He said, quietly and somewhat ruefully, but he accepted the help home and, after bidding Biroki a final thanks and farewell, he collapsed onto his palette, and into an exhausted sleep.
