This is a self rp in which Nik returns home from the festival of one hundred years of peace and reaches the conclusion that he would like to become a trainee. He must speak with his father about his decision to let him know that he does not wish to continue on with the family business as had been intended.

The youth had felt as though he had been lost in a dense fog ever since leaving the festival celebrating one hundred years of peace held in Shiganshina. Weeks had passed since the events of the festival had concluded and he had returned to his ivory tower tucked securely behind wall Sina, and yet he still could not pluck the experience from his mind as easily as he had so many others. Each day he found himself leaning on the sill of the large window in his bedroom, gazing out toward the place where he had spent multiple days among the people considered beneath of him and wondering how those he had befriended were fairing. His eyes would often stray to the writing desk neatly pushed into one corner of his large chamber as the urge to write to those he had grown fond of struck time and time again, but he would just as quickly look away and seek something to distract him from doing so.

Though he was concerned about what others would think of a noble born into such a notable family writing letters to illiterates, he was more worried about what the letters would do to his acquaintances. The night of the bonfire he had spoken against those that had shown him nothing but kindness, had insulted them, degraded them, and transformed into exactly what they had all originally imagined nobles to be. He was still uncertain as to whether or not anyone had heard him, aside from Axel of course who he still hoped was too drunk to recall the conversation, and thus thought writing them a letter may only serve to add insult to injury. Such contemplations often wore away at him as he all but carved a trench into the floors of his home pacing back and forth with deliberation.

He wanted to joke with Alec again, to listen to him and Favardin go on about candy and throwing darts. He missed tugging on the red head’s goggles and watching him squirm as he teased the boy in a manner similar to an elder brother picking on his younger sibling. He yearned for the day he spent chasing down horses, and desired to fulfill his promise of taking his teammates out for dinner. But he would never admit any of this aloud; rather he would blanket it with disparaging remarks and cruel jokes to amuse friends who cared about nothing more than fine wine and parties. Friends whose loyalty could be bought or sold like many of the fine commodities lining the estate in which he lived.

All of this and so much more circled mercilessly within Nik’s mind as he sat stiffly at the dinner table staring down a medium rare steak that he had no interest in. The fork rested sloppily in his limp hand lying palm up upon the solid mahogany table and the wine he used to find so much joy in remained untouched; the distant scraping of cutlery against fine china the only indication that he was not eating alone. His father and mother sat clear at the other end of the table gossiping about the latest fallen noble, paying no attention whatsoever to the altered demeanor of their only son until the fork slipped from his hand and clang noisily against the ornate plate in front of him.

“Dear God boy,” his father stuttered after being jarred by the unexpected racket, “have you no proper table manners? I paid good money for a wet-nurse to teach you such basic behavior, don’t make me regret it.” Nik hardly reacted to the scolding aside from neatly setting the fork aside and placing his napkin upon the table. He looked up to see his father eyeing him expectantly and his mother pretending he didn’t exist as usual. When the silence became too much to bear the graying politician spoke up once more. “Not even an apology? How do you hope to uphold the family name with that attitude?” The old man shook his head disapprovingly before returning to stuffing his face, mumbling around bites of food about how the Windsor name would not tolerate such disrespect.

His first instinct was to succumb to his father’s wishes and come up with an elaborate explanation followed by a well-rehearsed apology, but he simply could not bring himself to do it. He was at once at war with the person he had been raised to be, and the one who had recently surfaced when spending time in Shiganshina. The nobility of his upbringing and blood told him to ignore the foolish thoughts that had been plaguing him, to forget about those he had met and come to know but he couldn’t. “What does the Windsor name even mean?” He questioned before his thoughts could deter him. By the sudden halt to his father’s chewing he could tell he had upset the balance.

“What does it mean?” The plump man pushed away from the table and came to his feet surprisingly more quickly than would have been expected of him. “Why are you behaving this way? What has come over you? You have known all along what our name means and how you are meant to uphold it, don’t give me that Nikolaus. Whatever it is that has caused this change in you must be dealt with, perhaps if we bled you it would sooth the ailment that has made you act so strangely!”

The teen stared blankly at his arm, imagining a doctor cutting into it and allowing the blood to collect in a bowl and he began to laugh. His hand came up from its prior limp position and engulfed half of his face as the laughter grew louder. Finally after a moment he looked up at the stunned faces of not one but both parents and shook his head. “You are so contradictory father. You go on about the meaning of names and blood and yet without hesitation you seek to dispel the infection within my body by expelling that blood. Does that not send a message to you?”

Bringing himself to his feet he inhaled deeply and bit back another burst of laughter as his father’s wrinkled face turned various shades of red. A new light was dawning within his otherwise sheltered mind as he evaluated this moment. He took in the rich surroundings, the disgust on his mother’s face and his father’s utter confusion mixed with his complete rage, the sound of the tense silence that had engulfed them and he began to piece together his thoughts one at a time.

“I can no more be a Windsor than you can understand the truth of what goes on beyond walls,” he started calmly, “I am not meant to rest easily in some plush chair barking out orders concerning things I know nothing about.” His fists balled up and more passion entered his tone. “I have seen beyond the ivory tower and it cannot be unseen.” Running his fingers through his hair he turned his back on the only family he had ever known, those who had made him what he was currently and those that would reject what he had become. “Goodbye.”

Spitting shouts and insults followed him as he walked down the corridor to his chamber. At one point he nearly turned back but he would not let the weight of this decision deter him. He would join Alec and the others. Become a trainee and do something that actually mattered, something that didn’t involve living happily off of the hardships of others. He would become a trainee and fight the Titans. No more would he rest ignorantly behind white polished walls. He had become far too involved in the world around him to return to blissful isolation now.
