It was an early evening in summer, with the soft breeze blowing the green leaves in the treetops. The woods actually ended a good fifty feet before the edge of Azrael's mission, but the road that lead there went through the open deciduous forest. It wasn't a particularly thick stretch of woods--there was enough light for shrubs and grass to grow. Oak, sycamore, manzanita, and by a gurgling creek, even cottonwoods dared to grow. It was a lovely evening, and with the day's chores now complete, Sbande had decided to wander down the road towards the crossroads, gathering owl pellets into a bag around her neck as she went. She would pick through them later in hopes of finding bones. These would be placed in a clay pot in her quarters. She liked bones. How could she not? They were the structural beams of life.
There was a movement further up the road, and the algiedi mare paused. The breeze picked up into a wind, and she scented the air. No luck--the wind was blowing from the wrong direction. She sighed. "Who's there?" she called out. If it was Duranta playing games, it wasn't a particularly funny one. Least, not yet it wasn't.

The brightly colored lyra was as far from the shadow herd as he could get. Out here on a fetch mission in the middle of nowhere. He had only to gather skulls. However, Cranium, couldn't return to quickly. His mother and the rest of the herd would quickly realize something was amiss. How could the dimmest Star in the shadow herd so easily and quickly complete Retina's task? He would not have that. So Cranium traveled further than he had before, eating up the days. His mother may even assume he'd be lost. She had no hope for him after all.
He would change that upon his return. Cranium flew above the treetops skillfully. It was nice to get out though. So Far from the shadow herd he didn't have to worry about any of his family or another herd member seeing him doing complex maneuvers. Now that he was far enough and time had passed he could return to gathering those skulls. She'd Told him to find the skulls of an eagle, a wolf, and a serpent, strung with the bones of a pike. He'd go fishing first. The other three animals would be easy prey for him. He was quite clever after all. Cranium watched the road below he could see a lone mare below him. Most striking however were here bright colors. Those colors reminded him of Tony.
He was far from the herd, of all the things Tony was one of those he did miss. She'd gotten pregnant from some stallion Azura had brought in. Whether it was Azura's son, cousin or nephew Cranium didn't care, it made him angry. Tony had always cared for him, loved him and from the get go was the only one who believed in him. Through his fool act too, she had always been suspicious. He respected her and though they were supposed to be raised as Siblings Cranium had found himself drawn to her and had become rather possessive. His mother would have been ashamed to know his feelings for his adopted sister. Tony however had no feelings of the sort she only saw Crain as a younger brother. Crain was left with his shameful feelings of unrequited love for his adoptive sister.
But that mare's colors were so similar maybe he could distract himself with her company? And maybe she knew about skulls? She seemed to have similar markings to him on her face. The stallion descended from the sky landing a ways in front of her.
"Hello," Cranium smiled to the mare "apologies for startling you." Oh it was nice not to have to talk like an oaf for the first time in a long time.

The movement resolved into a white shape ghosting through the trees, broken up with patches of orange and blue. As it came closer, Sbande could make out the shape of a lyra stallion with a bright orange face in the shape of a skull. She smiled. How could she not? It was such a lovely face, and his eyes, once he came close enough to make them out, were a molten gold like sunlight. The sigh and disgruntlement forgotten in light of this new development, Sbande trotted forward. "Is no trouble at all," she said. His smile made his skull move in fascinating ways. She tilted her head and watched it. He looked familiar somehow, but just how it was she couldn't place a finger on it.
Never mind that. This here was quite obviously a guest, or maybe someone here to seek out the Grave Path. He looked strong, like a fighter, but she couldn't bring herself to imagine a skeleton-marked star as being a threat. Oh, a fighter, sure. Azrael was a fighter as well as a priest of war, but a threat? Surely not. Skeletons were life, and life was nothing to be afraid of. "I'm Sbande. Have you come far? Do you need a place to stay? We have that. If you'd follow me." She gestured to the path back to the mission with her head. "If not, is okay, it's up to you. You're a free spirit. Up to you."
Her ears caught up to her mouth and put a little note on it saying, Might want to listen to yourself. She talked like this most of the time, but then again, her friends were actually used to it. Her family talked like that, too--everyone she knew was used to her talking like that. But a stranger? Probably not so much. Unless, of course, he was a fellow member of the Grave Path. In which case, well, Sbande's family had been priests of the Grave Path since its inception; he might know her family, or have met distant members of it.

What a surprisingly hospitable mare. Offering an unknown traveler lodgings and food. Crain was surprised honestly.had he come far enough those in this area couldn't recognise one from the shadow herd? Ret's Children were all so brightly colored. She was one of the few producing such brilliant color combination of which she hated. He suffered being one of those she disliked. However, he would remedy that soon. Well if she couldn't recognize His color, he doubt then she would know him well enough to talk to those about his intelligence.
Though this mare the more he looked at her seemed to be like Tony. She had glowing blue horns like her and similar colors and markings. If not for her being an algedi and the skeletal markings The might have thought they were related. Tony never did know how much he actually cared for her. She probably never would and he was bitter about it. she'd picked his mother's favourite scout's son to have children with. He wasn't looking forward to returning to see them.
But here now was this strange mare offering him a place to rest, Why? What was her motive? Cranium was so used to everyone having some sort of ulterior motive. Though he did know kindness from Tony who always cared for him and cheered him on. Perhaps if he went along with it.... He might find out soon enough. It wasn't like he'd let his guard down or anything. "Actually I wouldn't mind a rest, i've been travelling for quite a while, your offer sounds nice, I'm seeking skulls actually for my family."

Sbande smiled at him and gestured again with her head. "Well, if you'd follow me, I can show you to our mission. And perhaps," she added, "I can help you with your search." She wasn't certain what "seeking skulls" actually meant, but she was certain she could help him with whatever it was. She knew plenty of places to find skulls, and she knew how to preserve them as well, so that they could be clean when they were put on display. "What kind of skulls are you seeking, and why does your family need them?" She smiled again. "Apologies, I do not mean to pry, only it is easier to help when you have all of the information, yes?"
She looked him over. The more she looked at him, the more his appearance bothered her. It wasn't the wings, no, and it couldn't be the bone markings either, because the Grave Path had many of those. No, it had to be something else. She felt like she had met him before. Or had she? Maybe it was just the bone markings after all--maybe that just made him seem familiar. "You may certainly have a rest with us, we will be happy to entertain a guest. But may I know your name?" She tried to say it politely as she could, but he hadn't introduced himself, and it was hard to interact with someone you didn't know. Someone with no name was a stranger, but someone with a name truly was a guest.
