User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The jet-black stallion had somehow done it again. Gotten into trouble. Straight into trouble. And there was no backing out of it now. Not now that he was literally up against a rock, a hard place. His behind was pressed up hard against a granite cliff as the snarling predators stalked closer. Now, more than ever, Mason wished he didn't have to interact with the world at large.

The arcturus was, by nature, a recluse. He didn't like meeting new people. He did like helping people he knew, liked, cared for, and respected. There was nothing better than the glow of seeing something go smoothly and knowing that without his efforts, it would not be so. Not even the smell of a new book or the thrill of new knowledge could compare. Reading and working--the two greatest pleasures in life. They were self-rewarding. That was the way Mason liked it. Running from things...not so much.

Mason didn't know very many people at all--he'd worked for other stars in the past, but they'd let him go, or they'd moved on without him. The scars had faded from that betrayal, but he would have to live with that. There was no changing the past, after all. Just...moving forward. Not into a wolf pack, hopefully, though.

This was the end. After a life time of serving other people and indulging in the odd book in what little free time he felt necessary, he was to be torn apart by wild monsters? This wasn't the ending he'd hoped for.

User ImageRamla Bowed at her makeshift altar, the mare prayed to the gods and godesses above. They(She and her brother Minkah) had found and retrieved a stolen artifact and now they were giving thanks to the gods that led them to it. However Bast and Ra with his eye forever open spoke to her. Nearby there was trouble, a star was in peril and they beseeched Ramla to save him. Ramla of course would do as they commanded. Leaving Minkah to protect the artifacts. He was better equipped to do so, her brother too was a priest. He was blessed by the goddess Sekhmet and able to transform into a lion. He would not lose the artifacts she knew. His faith was as strong as hers and the gods had a plan for the two.

The feline elder mare began her hunt. She walked upon the rocky ground, wait what was that? Her ears perked at the sound of hungry snarls, yelps and barks. It was True there wasn't much food around here but those dogs sound awfully close. Could it be possibly they were after someone? Both her and her brother's divine aura warded away predators so she and he had no fear or them. But whoever had their attention was certainly in danger.

Rama headed immediately toward the sounds of ravenous dogs her thundering hooves crashing heavily against the rocks. Though she was a priestess of a cat goddess didn't mean she had to be gentle. She trusted the gods to take care of her, A black stallion was trapped against the rocks, then it was this stallion the gods lead her to. picking up speed Ramla trampled into the wild dogs at full gallop, stopping in front of the stallion and slamming her hooves into the ground in front of her.

The ravenous beasts looked at her uneasily, the ones who had been in her path limping away whining startled. The ones that remained, some of them were still growling low.

"Away!" The priestess roared rearing once more on her hind legs and slamming her hooves into the ground cracking the earth beneath them. The beasts deciding that their meal was not worth the work of taking on the mare they scampered off with a ominous howl. Ramla watched them as they left like a hawk, sternly until they were long out of sight. The feline mare turned to the poor stallion under her guard. "Praise the gods, I arrived in time."

The end. The hot, sticky, painful, terrifying end. Mason lowered his head in resignation. There was nothing more he could do. Now, at the end of a life of quiet solitude, he would die. He wrapped his tail around his back leg and squeezed his eyes shut.

With eyes shut, he was unable to witness the arrival of a cat-eared half-arcturus mare leaping into the fray and trampling any dog too slow to get in her way. At her roar, Mason dared to open his pale gold eyes and witness the wondrous sight before him. Her tan and grey hair glistened with sweat, her hooves cracked the earth beneath them. She was wild, she was dangerous. She was the most beautiful star he'd ever seen. And all the more beautiful for her courage and self-confidence. Mason didn't even notice the angry howl of the departing dogs. He was too captivated by those vivid green eyes. Against all odds, Mason found himself shrinking back against the rock. Some inner instinct that had, until now, never spoken, told him that his savior was touched by deities unknown. Her oath confirmed it. "Thank you," he whispered. "Thank you..."

"The Goddess Bast and Sun God Ra are who you must thank." She gave the stallion a smile. Ramla offered the prayer of thanks to both Bast and Ra before apologizing to Set for harming his animals. "You are safe now," she told the star. True enough he was the dogs had fled and she could not sense them nearby.

The stallion seemed a little worse for wear. "Are you hurt?" she asked softly. Her voice much less ferocious than before. There was no longer a need for it. "This place is not safe for a star alone." most stars traveled in groups through the desert. It was hard for one star alone and he seemingly had no provisions. That might have something to do with the wild dogs chasing him.

Ramla's emerald feline eyes watched the stallion. She had to make sure he was alright before she returned to Minkah. "I am Ramla high priestess of many Gods."

"Oh...of course..." Mason said faintly. He was not a spiritual star by nature--he'd never seen any sort of evidence of gods before, and while he knew that some stars believed in them, he knew nothing about any gods at all. In fact, before today, he would've been quick to dismiss them as superstitious nonsense. He needed proof of things to believe in them. He was a skeptic. It made it easier to file the metaphorical paperwork when you weren't looking for poltergeists in the copying machine (so to speak). That would not change, not any time soon. What had changed was that before today, he'd never had evidence of gods existing. But now? Now he had evidence. He had all the evidence he needed.

He shook his head. "N-no. I'm okay. Just scared. Er, I was. Frightened. By the wolves. I think I'm better now." Her voice was so much softer now, but he still kept his head low in reverence. There were so many thoughts tumbling through his head right now, so many impulses, he didn't know what to say. But he did know what had to be said. What had to be said for the future, and for now, and for always, and for what had just happened. He knew what had to be said, and he'd say it, right here, right now. "Your holiness, I am Mason. You--your gods saved my life. I will serve you and your gods until the end of days, if you will let me." He lowered himself to his knees and touched his horn to the ground. "Please, let me serve you, in honor of the gift you have given me today." Mason's heart was pounding in his ears, drowning out all other sound, but he strained himself to hear what the priestess had to say.

Ramla smiled watching the stallion who was understandably still flustered from his near death experience. "Good," she was please he wasn't hurt. She had indeed gotten here in time. His next words surprised her as Ramla's eyes widened briefly in surprise before setting her solid gaze upon the stallion.

The Priestess regarded Mason as though contemplating before speaking "To serve the gods is not an easy task," the priestess warned; by becoming you no longer were able to have whims of your own, only the whims of your god would you take. "you commit your whole heart, body and soul." Both Ra and Bast had asked for her to save him. Ramla knew for their worship she must rebuild their pantheon. Such a task would require dedicated followers as the unworthy had already been purged. Those of similar mind were required for such a thing. Perhaps this was why she had been led down this road.

He was the one, Ramla was certain Regarding him once more. Ramla after another moment nodded ears twitching like that of a cat "If you truly wish to be devout, Follow me I will teach you." she said turning back in the direction which she had left Minkah. She did not doubt he would follow her, and she was looking forward to teaching a new acolyte once again.

Mason nodded, relieved. He'd been worried for a moment that she would not let him pay her back. He hated being in debt to anyone. It made him feel...well, useless. He would much rather repay the debt than feel that terrible feeling.

Not that I can repay that. He stepped delicately over the bodies of the wolves that until moments ago he had been sure he would be inside by now. He shuddered. The mare had saved his life--and according to her, it was only through the help of the gods that she had been able to do so. That she had divine help was obvious--the cracked ground still stood. No mortal star could do such a thing, not in all of his research. So no, he could probably never repay this debt in full. But at least he would be paying part of it.

"Your holiness, I have never followed the gods, but with your help..." he looked over at her and the glinting holy symbols that bedecked her. "With your help, I will dedicate my heart, body, and soul to them. Thank you," he added quickly, "for giving me this chance."

He followed her, head still held low. It was comfortable to hold his head like that, but now he felt like he had more need to than ever. He felt...humbled. Someone had helped him--and he had not even offered them something beforehand. The gods must have felt I was important enough to save, he told himself. That must mean something. "M-may I ask about the gods I now serve...?" He flinched. He needed to know who they were--what they liked--what their stories were--he couldn't serve them without knowing about them, but at the same time, what if she withdrew his offer? What if he was being...well, annoying, or cheeky, or...?

Ramla smiled gently at Mason. "High priestess is my correct title." She corrected gently but perhaps It was what whorshipers of the other gods were called. He was a good star, He had an excellent attitude and Mason was eager; that was good. Ramla herself was eager to teach. This was after all their plan and ramla would see it through. Ramla continued to walk ahead she coukd see minkah curled around his sacred charge carefully keeping them safe in the distance.

Ramla glanced back at him as mason spoke. "That is why I am here Mason, I shall teach you everything about those who have saved you, and how to thank them properly." The feline featured mare smiled at him. She'd been raised to be a priestess but often seen souls like mason come to her when something unexplainable happened.

"Of coure Mason; walk beside me." She bade the stallion "i will tell you of our gods."

Mason nodded. "Yes, High Priestess," he said. He committed the title to memory. If nothing else, he had an excellent memory. It was his best feature (if he did say so himself) other than his skill in learning. Learning was a skill, and Mason was good at it.

He followed Ramla closely--he wasn't exactly going to stray far after the experience--experiences--he'd just had. He took a place next to her shyly. True, she'd invited him there, but...it still seemed like a heady place to be. She wasn't just brave, she was regal, proud. He wasn't just calling her holiness because she was a priestess, he called her that because she sort of...he didn't know how to describe it let alone explain it, but she seemed to radiate power from her. Maybe it was the gold, maybe it was the confidence, maybe it was the way she smiled. Either way...he followed her along, watching as they went. They were approaching another stallion. This one reminded him much of Ramla. He was curled up around a strange artefact--a holy relic, perhaps? He was probably a fellow priest. Mason didn't ask. He would be told in time if he needed to be, and in the meantime, well...he was just too awestruck to ask. Besides. Could be rude. Not really his place to ask... "Thank you, High Priestess," he said softly. "Thank you so much..."
