I was surfacing on my brother’s island lair, when I spotted something strange. A floating rock vaguely shaped like a person with primitive stone armor and a random green ball of magic swirling about where the legs should be. It was leaving my brother’s cave. What was this? Sniffing the air I smelled blood….OH NO! My brothers!

I crashed at the strange thing and smashed it away from the cave entrance…Inside laid my brothers, badly wounded but still alive, barely. There was a grinding sound, and I turned and looked behind me, the rock thing was raising its weapon….this thing had hurt my brothers!!! I wanted to kill it then and there, but my wounded brothers came first. I grabbed them and slung their bodies over my shoulders, thankful for my large size and strength that made it possible and then charged into the Thing. I smashed it aside and raced to the ocean.

As I entered the ocean, I formed a bubble of air around my unconscious siblings and swam deep, hoping that rock would not want to enter the water. I swam to where I remembered my parents living. They might not want to see me, but my brothers needed help fast, and I wasn’t a good enough healer to provide it, but my parents would know who to go to.

I reached the shoreline near my parent’s house and headed in when I was stopped by a dova hybrid.
“Ah-mooi and Ah-jooi! Oh no! Sir, I’m not sure who you are, but if you would bring them to the hospital, their parents are busy helping out with the wounded. Can I help carry them at all? Why did they get attacked by the mara, they weren’t hunting at all…”
“I can carry my brothers, thank you. And what are mara? Are they those floating rocks? One was in their lair. I’d have killed it, but these two need more treatment then I can give them and as soon as possible.”
“Oh! You’re their brother? My apology, I didn’t know. Yes the floating rocks are mara and…..

I walked as fast as I could while carrying two fully grown Khehora on my back. The dova hybrid lead me towards where I remember the hospital being. As we traveled I noticed signs of wreckage where there shouldn’t be and some rather wounded people who normally would never leave the city. Apparently these living rocks go anywhere. As we walked, my guide explained what had happened and told me about the recent events.

I would kill all mara that I found. How dare they attack my brothers! I could care less where these living rocks came from, but I was going to kill them all. Listening and memorizing what was said I planned my attack on these creatures. I would focus my hunting on Eowyn to make sure that none attacked my family again. This would take time and I would need to leave the water, but I would do so.

I reached the hospital with my unconscious brothers and the dova hybrid guide. The hospital was like an overturned ants nest. People were running everywhere and chaos was in command. The dova hybrid motioned for me to wait where I wouldn’t block up too much area and cause more chaos before walking up to the front door, which was much too small for me to go through and hollering inside.

“Can someone tell Lajangi that her three sons are here, two of them were attacked and need care, and the third is currently carrying them” a muted response came from inside “she’s around back healing the most recent wounded but she’s almost out of water, bring her some more”

He came back out carrying a big bucket of water that pulsed with healing energy and said “we have to go around to the back, so follow me.” We made our way through the chaos, me by the simply process of walking forward. There aren’t many Magescians who are going to argue with an Orakovan who is carrying two others on his back and still managing a brisk pace despite the weight and awkward positioning.
We meet up with Mother she greeted me with “Thank goodness that you choose to visit now. I was worried about these two, but they wouldn’t leave they lair. I wish that they hadn’t been attacked, but at least they’ll live. Lend me your magic and I’ll patch these two up.” And so we got to work patching up my smaller brothers and making sure they were alright, the dova providing help with moving their wings gently around so that they could be properly healed, not something an Orakoven’s claws are suited for.

Once they were healed up, mother looked at the hybrid “My magic is about used up so I need to recover, take the water to one of the other Peisio healers, it will do more good with them.” As he dashed off, she looked at me and said “Tell me more, all I’ve seen are the results and no one coherent enough to talk. Other than the one message sent out by the city, I know nothing.”
“I don’t know much more, Mother. I came to shore on the Ah’s lair right after it had finished attacking them. It looked like a giant rock carved into a crude Magescian shape with rough sheets of metal that looked like armor. There weren’t any legs, just a ball of glowing green magic. It didn’t say anything, and I was too worried about those two to take the time to destroy it. It was wielding a metal weapon although it didn’t seem to be all that intelligent.”
“hmmm, so they are magical and can operate by themselves but not intelligently? Why do people play with creating creatures with magic? Everything created by magic to operate by itself will develop into a new life forms. We ourselves are proof of this…” Mother sighed and lend up against me, “This war between the races is the problem, promise me you won’t get involved Imoogi? War is a terrible thing with no end. No one is saved and all sides are hurt.”
I rubbed my head against my mother’s, “I hunt, Mother. Unless I can eat a creature I won’t hunt it down. There was only one exception to that, and that’s dragons. Dragons kill us on sight, so I can’t simply let them live when they won’t stop hunting and killing us. I defend myself and others. Except now it seems that there is a new threat to our people. It seems that these living rocks are in the same category. They attack and will not spare anyone.”
Mother looked up at me, “that sounds a lot like the justification the magescians give for war…”

“I have seen different Magescian races living together; this town is proof that they can coexist without war. I have never seen a dragon that will not attack a Kheorian.Show me a dragon that will let a Khehorian live, and will live side by side with us, and I will stop attacking them. But in all my swimming around, no Peisio dragon has tried to speak to me, all dragons attack me on sight. How can I not fight them? Same goes for these new creatures, If they can live peacefully next to us, then I shall not hunt them. But if they can’t, then I will hunt them down so the weak are not killed.” We started slowly heading back around to the front of the hospital, her leaning on my shoulder. “Sorry if that disappoints you, but I am how I am. I cannot stop being what I am so I will not expect others to behave differently from what they are; I shall simply deal with it. “
“mmmmm, at least you have thought it out, my biggest baby. Your father will probably scold you again, but I won’t. Do try to visit more often, I like to swim with company, but there aren’t that many who can keep up with me”

“yes mother, I’ll try to remember to stop by more often” I smiled down at my tired mother. As we came around a corner, I smelled earth magic, the same strange earth magic from back when I smashed by the Mara from my brothers’ lair. I stopped abruptly, “Mother, get inside, I smell Mara nearby” Before she could stop me, I launched myself into the evening sky to get a better view. There flying through and chasing some magescians were four flying rock formations. Three of them looked just like the one I had seen earlier, but the fourth was different, it was a suit of armor and it had a blue light rather than green. I know that the green rock ones are stupid but this blue metal one might be smarter. It must be destroyed first then.

I furled my wings in and dove. This time I managed to focus on the metal figure and blue glow rather than the ground rushing towards me. CRASH! It shattered as my full weight came streaking down and hit it squarely in its chest. I flared my wings and spun, but the blue light was gone. Good, the light must be its life indicator, time to get the next one. I lashed out with my tail and knocked the closest one flying.
My destruction of the Metal Mara had attracted the other three’s attention allowing all the bystanders to safely escape. The two Rock Maras closed in on me, but their movements were simple and easy to read, so I charged the right hand one. I knocked it into the ground and grasped its shoulders with my claws. Its time like these that I wish I had a thumb; it would make grabbing things so much easier. I couldn’t use my teeth because you never bite rock with your teeth unless you want to lose them, and I wasn’t sure how well my claws would work against rock, so that left crushing them. I can do that with my weight. So I braced my hind feet and started bashing the Rock Mara against the hard ground. Every time one of the other two Maras came close; I swatted it away with my tail or wing. To smash rocks you must focus on one at a time after all. Eventually I managed to reduce the Mara to rubble and the green light flew away.

My smashing had taken a long time however. This was both good and bad. It was good because the Magescian fighters had been able to collect themselves and come running, but bit was bad because the Rock Mara apparently decided to not take on a large group of prepared fighters. The two Rock Maras that were unharmed turned and fled, leaving the remains of the other two behind. I need to come up with a better method of destroying these Rock people, smashing them one by one allows the others to escape. Well that is a thought that needs proper attention, but later, I have these tiny Magescians to talk to for now.

I looked at the Magescians that had gathered a distance away from me, for some reason they seemed a bit wary. How strange, I only broke two of these Mara, what are they so worried about. They must be worried because of the size difference. I looked at one and growled “take these remains to Lajangi over by the hospital, tell I’m off to go follow the two that escaped.”
“ah…um.. yes sir, right away sir…” the frightened Orderite practically jumped a foot into the air and cowered close to his companions. I sighed “I’m not going to eat you. You taste nasty so quite being so twitchy. Silly person” I launched myself into the air stirring up dust and debris. Why do the small folk act like that? If they had been on a ship, I would have overturned it just to give them something to really worry about. Whatever, I need to find those two escapee Rock Mara.

The sun was starting to dink below the horizon, staining the sky and land with rich reds, oranges, and yellows with the shadows stretching out to cover the rest. I hovered on a nice thermal and looked for the green glow of the Mara’s life. There they were. Hmmm, how peculiar. They’re actually moving in on a smaller settlement to attack again. It was a good idea to follow them.

I pumped my wings to gain more height and then peeled off towards them. This might take a while; I haven’t had time to come up with a better plan then simply smashing them to pieces. Maybe there is water nearby that I can use instead? I looked for water near the glowing green swirls, but didn’t spot any. There was some further off, but it was too far away to be useful. Drat, rock smashing it is.

I’ll have to forgo the diving smash this time because diving at one a Rock Mara would be like face diving straight into the ground, ick. I landed a bit away and tried to move quietly towards the Mara. I spotted them up ahead looking back at me. Oh well, I guess I really am not suited to moving quietly when on land. I smashed the last of the undergrowth out of my way and charged them. Why be subtle when it is just a waste of time?

I easily dodged their weapons and crashed into the one on the left. After I had him on the ground I realized the problem. The ground was too soft to make smashing effective. Opps. I looked at the giant hammer it had dropped, this might work better, but first I must make sure that the other one can’t interfere. I sat on the downed Mara, ignoring its movements and waited until the other one had come close enough to grab. I jumped on him and wrapped my tail around his head. Using my body as a counter weight, I threw him as far as I could. I’ll have to chase him down after I smash the first. Moving quickly I grabbed the hammer in my teeth and jumped back towards the first Mara. Landing on its body, I positioned myself to have an easier time hitting it and clumsily wrapped my claws around the hammer shaft. I smashed it again and again with the hammer until he finally shattered into bits and the green light fled. Good. I gathered up the shattered bits and stored them in my pack and grabbed the hammer in my teeth before launching myself back into the air to find the last Mara.

I flew towards where I had launched the final Rock Mara. There was its imprint, now where was it? Looking around, I didn’t spot it near the impression it had left in the ground and flora. Hmm, how strange. The night breeze came blowing from behind, and it brought the scent of the strange earth magic. Behind me? Wha…?

Turning, I barely managed to avoid the axe swing form the Mara. How did he get behind me in the air? I managed to avoid the next couple of swings but the hammer I was carrying in my mouth was interfering with my flying. I kept dodging its blows, but trying to hit it was impossible with the hammer. Argh, so frustrating! I dropped the hammer and climbed higher into the air. I dived at it, but had to swerve abruptly because of its weapon swings. How annoying. I climbed higher and it moved closer to the ground. Drat, this is getting even more annoying. Maybe I can get it with water….but there needs to be a water source first… I wonder how far that lake I saw is? I looked at spotted it. Nope, it was still too far away. I’ll have to try driving him towards it. Unfortunately, it had other plans. As It saw me climb for air, it moved quickly away, in the opposite direction of the lake. Well, not much I can do now, I can’t smash it into the ground, the ground is too soft and there isn’t enough water around it for me to use. Looks like I’ll have to let this one get away.

Oh well, at least its heading in a direction where no one lives for a couple of miles. I guess it is now time for me to head back home
