Liro looked at Valera and asked, "Why are you doing this? You're her last family!"
"Because I'm too old to take care of a little girl! I won't abandon her, but she needs a real mother, someone who can keep up with her! Someone who can help her heal." Valera sighed, her granddaughter, the child in question here, had just lost both her mothers. Finding a new family may hurt her for a little bit, but it would be better in the long run.
"But.."
"No buts girl. Do it. I will explain to Neska myself."
The older Alkidike slowly stood up and left the room to find her granddaughter. Best she hears it from me.

Vollerei was in Amara to buy some gear and furniture. Her house was becoming more homelike as she spent more time there. Now that she'd been in it for about a month, she was realizing all the stuff she needed to finish it. The door and roof had been fixed, she had most of the main furniture needed, but it was bare. I think I'll buy curtains and more rugs now. Rugs were nice! Though a pain to clean.
As she strode through the houses on her way to the market she heard her name being called. Turning she saw Liro trotting up to her.
"Volle! I've got a favor to ask of you." She said when she got nearer.
"Favor?" She twitched her antennae questioningly.
"Yeah, you see because of the Oban war there are now some orphans in Amara now and one of these orphan's grandmother told me to find someone to ... take care of her granddaughter."
Vollerei opened her mouth to speak then paused. Orphans? That would happen wouldn't it? I hope Liro isn't asking to raise a child with her. But.. she looked at her friend. No, that's not her aim. This was an honest question if she was to judge.
"Can she not take care of the child on her own?"
Liro sighed. "She said she couldn't."

Neska hugged her stuffed kinfa to her as she looked up at her grandmother with big hurt eyes. She'd heard the whole conversation.
"Y-you don't want me gran-ma?" She whispered sadly.
Valera sighed and sat down with a groan and pulled the small child into a hug. "No lovely. I do want to keep you. But how am I supposed to raise you? I'm too old I can't keep up!"
"I-I'll be a good girl!" Neska pleaded, thinking she'd done something wrong.
"You already are," She said with a soft smile. "But you need a mother, not a granny. I'm hoping that you'll be able to heal and smile again if you can find another family."
"B-but.. d-don't wanna leave." Neska whispered as she clung to her grandmother.
"I'm not going to toss you out! And I'll always visit. " Valera promised. "Or you can come here every day. But I want you to have a real home, not this empty house I'm living in. This isn't home to you. I can tell."

"So.. you're thinking I should take care of her?" Vollere asked as she followed Liro.
"Well.. yes... You're a very confident and happy person. So... I'm hoping that you can... help her get her smile back."
Well, that kinda makes sense, Vollerei thought to herself. And she couldn't bring herself to abandon a kid in need. "I'll meet the girl first," she told Liro, "before I give any answers. Gotta see if the kid wants to go with me cause I'm not going to bring an unwilling girl into my house and try to raise her. That'll just make her hate me."
"That makes sense." Liro nodded in agreement as she stopped outside an old house. "Here's her grandmother's house."

She was going to have to leave? This wasn't home true. Neska knew that she didn't feel attached tot he house. Home was the place her mother's had been, home was where she'd grown up. But this was familiar and gran-ma was here!
"Promise?" She said looking up pleadingly, "Promise you'll not leave? You'll stay with me?"
"Promise. But I need help caring for you." Valera said. "So you won't be losing me, but gaining a new family. Is that okay?" She asked kindly, smoothing her granddaughters short dreads. She set her granddaughter back on the floor and slowly staggered to her feet with a grunt as she heard a knock at the door.
"Go let who ever it is in, will you Neska?" She asked as she put a hand to her lower back. Old age made her bones ache.
Neska trotted to the door and opened it a crack to peek through. She pouted when she Liro. She didn't like Liro: Liro held her captive when her mothers had left, Liro was taking her away from here.

Liro smiled and asked gently to the child who peeked around the door.
"Neska dear, can you let your granny know I'm here?"
"Mm." Was the only response as the door opened slightly more. Liro sighed, and shook her head.
"She never speaks to me and always hides." She said sadly.
"Why's that?" Vollerei asked as she walked into the building.
"I don't know why... Volle! Don't just go entering--"
"Hush you. The door was left open and I think she's gone to fetch her grandmother. No reason to wait on the porch."
"But still!" Liro said as she followed. Her friend, the one she loved, was certainly confident! A bit rude though... "You should wait on the porch until invited in!"
"That was an invitation." Vollerei said with a smile. She turned and gave a nod to the older Alkidike who entered. "Door was open so I came in."
She spotted the small child hiding behind her grandmother, poor thing looked really shy, though she did give a small glare at Liro. That's fascinating, the kid doesn't like Liro.

Valera smiled in welcome to the tall (and very large) stranger who stood in front of Liro. "I take it she didn't say to come in?"
She looked at her granddaughter and raised and eyebrow.
Neska hid her face behind her skirt.
"Please sit down. I didn't expect you back so soon Liro."
Neska followed her grandmother and hid behind her chair. The stranger was different. Tall and very big. Not at all like most of the Alkidikes she'd seen! Plus she had scars... Was this the person she was gong to have to leave with?

Liro sat down gracefully and smiled. "I didn't expect to find her in town! Valera, this is Vollerei. Volle, this is Valera, she's Neska's grandmother."
Vollerei shook the offered hand. "Pleasure to meet you. Liro gave me the basics." She was never one to beat around the bush: it saved time to get straight to the point. "Apparently you need help raising the small tyke?" She motioned to the child peeking at her from behind the chair.
Liro sighed and shook her head. "Volle, why do you never try to make small talk?"
"Small talk is for those who have nothing to really say." Vollerei said with a grin. "Besides, sooner we get to the point, the sooner I can talk with the child and see if she wants to move in. I'm not going to just take her home if she's unwilling." She spoke for Neska's benefit as well as the grandmothers.

Valera was a little taken back by the blunt opening. But it was promising. She wanted to talk with Neska apparently.
"Well yes..."
Neska peeked out from behind the chair to look at the tall big one. So this was one who wanted to take her away? "Dun wanna leave grammy." She whispered. "Dun wanna lose anything else."

Vollerei leaned down to peer at Neska. "Never said I was going to take you away lil one. I said I was going to help. You leave when you're ready for it."
She leaned back and looked at the grandmother. "I'll drop by in the mornings and afternoons. Take her out to teach her how to hunt every now and then. Or drop by places she wants to go to."
She meant what she said. The girl had lost too much, she wasn't going to make her lose more. Plus her house wasn't really ready for others to live in it!

"Oh.. that... that sounds good." Valera said. She hadn't been looking forward to having Neska leave, but she knew she couldn't care for her granddaughter on her own. This sounded a lot better.
Neska agreed. She scooted out a little further and looked up at Vollerei. "Mean it? I can stay here til.. till later?" It was scary living in a world without her mothers, and grammy was all she had left. Maybe that Liro wasn't so bad if she brought in someone like this large sister. Though Neska still didn't like her.
Valera smiled down at her granddaughter and laid a gentle hand on her head. "I think that will be perfect."

Liro watched all this and smiled. She'd made the right choice in picking Vollerei! And... it wasn't like she was forcing Volerei into a relationship right? Cause she was certainly going to stay with Volle to help her ease into the whole child care thing.. Maybe this would make her fall for me?
Vollerei, unaware of Liro's thoughts smiled at the pair in front of her. "Course I mean it! There's no reason to uproot you yet again! Plus my house is.. still rickety. Gotta fix it up and all that. Perhaps you can help Neska. See if you actually want to live there. If not, then I'll just stick to coming here to watch you and teach. "
And perhaps by helping get the house to rights, Neska would see it as home. And if not? Then she had a young friend she was looking after and the child could stay with her family.
Only time can tell.

She leaned into her grandmothers pat before standing up and moving to the lap. Now that she knew she wasn't going to be taken away she felt better. Vollerei was a nice person!
"Sure... I can help." She said shyly. She'd never done anything like.. house fixing before. Maybe it'd be fun?
Valera gave her a hug and smiled at Vollerei. "Well, since you're still fixing it up. Why don't we take a tour there? I'll see what needs to be done to make it safe for a child." She looked fondly at her little girl. The lass almost never came out of hiding around strangers, but hearing all this was probably making her relax.
"How about it Neska, love? Want to go visit her place?"
"Mm!" Neksa smiled a little and nodded her head.

Vollerei stood up and nodded. "Sure can do! It'd e a big help too. I've got a lot of furniture and stuff already and the roof and door is fixed. But that's about it. It's kind of bare right now."
Liro stood as well and smiled. "I'll come with..."
"Don't you have to help out at the nursery today?" Valera asked with a raised brow. She knew her granddaughter didn't like Liro for some reason, though she had an idea of why.
Vollerei smiled and shook her head. "Bad Liro! No skipping out of work. You already know what the house looks like anyways."

Neska frowned when Liro tried to join in, but brightened up when she couldn't come. Good! She didn't want to spend time with that sister.
As they left, she trotted along side her grandmother's side, holding tight to her kinfa doll. She was curious despite herself; what sort of place was it?
Vollerei led them a good walk to the edge of town where her house sat hidden in a huge tree. Neska stared up at it. There was subtle steps along the trunk of the tree leading up to a house that looked old and worn.
"It's high up there." She said in a small voice.
