She arrived late and without a word, without a look, and without hesitation. Was someone looking for her, or did they think she was a casualty already? Had those happened yet? (They always did.) Gale maybe was worried, but he wasn't around, thankfully. She wasn't quite ready. She had something to do first.
Hood pulled and scarf neatly tucked around her neck and mouth, Stormy strode out alone to look into some insanity mobs spawning in the northeast area. She supposed backup would have been safer, but she didn't feel particularly at risk. Thane's calm chill overtook her as they readied themselves, feeling more in sync than they had previously before. Maybe it was because of the newly attained rank. Maybe they just had the same goal in mind for once.
Time to test their strength.

After all, what was the point of strength if she didn't know how to properly wield it? For months Stormy had relied solely on being support for others, always watching, always trying to defend. But Mists were required to be anything and everything at whatever given time, and it was high time she went on the offensive anyway.

There. A ghostly figure seemed to slighter on the ground ahead, though she could pick up the movement of a thousand tiny legs, the waving stinger, the gnashing mandibles. It was large, but slow: not the challenge she wanted, but a target nevertheless.

The strike felt a little too good, she supposed distantly. Maybe bug crushing was just something she would have to accept as part of a stupid, vindictive vendetta against the damn infected things. Even if stopping one didn't actually mean anything, she could choose for it to be--that was what mattered more. One less bug, one less irritant, one more thing to vent herself upon safely.
Its mandibles attempted to bite her, but it knocked against her shield instead.

So this was what power was like. Stormy didn't feel the mad rush, which was one nice thing in an ocean of wrongness about her, but there was a definite pleasure in wielding it, in having control and confidence. She was not the babbling trainee anymore, and it was best to reflect that maturity and training while on the job.
(But on the inside she couldn't quite change, even though her very nature was capricious and eccentric. She would always be the same little optimist, regardless of how she acted.)
Thsi was all temporary anyway. Just practicing a mask, a means of making sure she didn't break down on the job. She wasn't so much changing anyway as she was adapting, which was her division's specialty. She would smile when she wanted to smile and turn serious when it was time to be serious and for once try and be decisive instead of the flimsy, ever-questioning thing she found hard to suppress.

The greatsword began to softly glow once Thane had his fill and rumbled in her head. < < Would you like to try it? > >
Should we, though? What if . . . For all of her stoicism thus far, Stormy was still wary of that charge. It feels like it would be overkill, she hedged.
< < Indeed. But if you are not comfortable with how we can attack, then this whole effort has been pointless. You can swing the weapon, but anyone could. > >
The bug lashed out, but she barely noticed.

And so they stepped forward together.
Boundaries were forgotten for a moment. She swore her heart forgot to beat for a few seconds as something chilly sat over her skin. The blade dripped with corrosive acid, ignited with one strong swing as the jagged edges scraped against the creature's fogy carapace, became a blast of sulphur and and pain and devouring coldfire. It engulfed them both, but she knew that already, had braced for it in her stance and in her will, held steady, never closed her eyes.
She swore it hurt more than usual. Thane was probably testing her.
Stormy completed the swing regardless, neatly bringing it back to her and readying a second strike just in case. But there was no need--in a blast of horrid goop and screeching, writhing legs, it disappeared. She nearly gagged at the new combined smell and pressed the scarf to her mouth, desummoning her weapon.

Her heartbeat came back with a vengeance.
